Aldehyde Bromination For Stilbenoid Syntheses, Dhanunjay N. Padal Sep 2012

Aldehyde Bromination For Stilbenoid Syntheses, Dhanunjay N. Padal

Student Theses and Dissertations

This thesis will focus on being able to synthesize an alkyne from an aldehyde, forming a dibromoalkene as an intermediate. This alkyne then can be converted to a stilbenoid in the future on reaction with alkyl lithium. Combretastatin A-4 and resveratrol are the stilbenoids, which have biological significance. These compounds have therapeutic value and are extracted from plants or fruits for their production. The chemical synthesis for these compounds from an economic point of view is very important. The Corey-Fuchs reaction was used to synthesize the dibromoalkenes. Literature cites use of triphenylphosphine as a reactant, but triisopropyl phosphite was used …

Feasibility Study On Implementation Of Medium Temperature Solar Thermal Energy In Industrial Processes: A Case Study In Malaysia / Chin Chuan Kong, Chuan Kong Chin

Student Works (2010-2019)

A case study on the feasibility of implementing medium temperature solar thermal energy in industrial processes in Malaysia is conducted. The objective is to determine if it is technically and economically viable to utilize the solar thermal renewable energy at a temperature range of 80-250°C as a substitute to conventional means of generating thermal energy. Solar energy is the source of most other renewable energies, and Malaysia being situated at the equator makes us geographically favorable to harness this free energy. Almost half of the industrial processes use thermal energy rather than electrical energy, and the output of a solar …

Sequencing And Analysis Of The Gastrula Transcriptome Of The Brittle Star Ophiocoma Wendtii, Roy Vaughn, Nancy Garnhart, James R. Garey, W. Kelley Thomas, Brian T. Livingston Sep 2012

Sequencing And Analysis Of The Gastrula Transcriptome Of The Brittle Star Ophiocoma Wendtii, Roy Vaughn, Nancy Garnhart, James R. Garey, W. Kelley Thomas, Brian T. Livingston

Hubbard Center for Genome Studies (HCGS)

Background

The gastrula stage represents the point in development at which the three primary germ layers diverge. At this point the gene regulatory networks that specify the germ layers are established and the genes that define the differentiated states of the tissues have begun to be activated. These networks have been well-characterized in sea urchins, but not in other echinoderms. Embryos of the brittle star Ophiocoma wendtii share a number of developmental features with sea urchin embryos, including the ingression of mesenchyme cells that give rise to an embryonic skeleton. Notable differences are that no micromeres are formed during cleavage …

An Investigation Of The Current Course Content On The Ba (Hons.) In Culinary Arts Hot Kitchen Modules In The Dublin Institute Of Technology To Ascertain Whether The Content Is Adequate In Meeting The Needs Of The Stakeholders, Pauline Danaher

Theses, M.Phil

This research focuses on Culinary Arts Education, particularly the adequacy and attitudes of all the stakeholders to the content of the hot kitchen modules on the BA (Hons.) in Culinary Arts in the Dublin Institute of Technology. The lack of research in culinary education has been highlighted by Berta (2005) and Zopiatis (2010).

This thesis has traced the evolution of culinary culture in Europe from Ancient Greece and Rome, up to the present day. Carême (1784 – 1833) and Escoffier (1846 – 1935), the founders of classical French cuisine, codified French cuisine which lead to the need of properly trained …

Nf-Κb Contributes To The Detrimental Effects Of Social Isolation After Experimental Stroke, Venugopal Reddy Venna, Gillian Weston, Sharon E. Benashski, Sami Tarabishy, Fudong Liu, Jun Li, Lisa H. Conti, Louise D. Mccullough

UCHC Articles - Research

Social isolation (SI) is increasingly recognized as a risk factor for stroke. Individuals with lack of social support systems have an increased incidence of stroke, poorer recovery, and greater functional decline after injury compared to individuals with social support. Attesting to the importance of social factors in stroke outcome is that these same effects can be reproducibly demonstrated in animals; social interaction improves behavioral deficits and reduces damage after experimental stroke, whereas SI enhances injury. The mechanism by which SI exacerbates injury is unclear. We investigated the role of nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-κB) signaling in male mice that were pair housed …

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The effect of consumers on their resources has been demonstrated in many systems but is often confounded by trophic interactions with other consumers. Consumers may also have behavioral and life history adaptations to each other and to co-occurring predators that may additionally modulate their particular roles in ecosystems. We experimentally excluded large consumers from tile periphyton, leaves and natural benthic substrata using submerged electrified frames in three stream reaches with overlapping consumer assemblages in Trinidad, West Indies. Concurrently, we assessed visits to (nonelectrified) control frames by the three most common large consumers–primarily insectivorous killifish (Rivulus hartii), omnivorous guppies …

Genomics and Precision Medicine Faculty Publications

Galectins are pleiotropic carbohydrate-binding lectins involved in inflammation, growth/differentiation, and tissue remodeling. The functional role of galectins in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is unknown. Expression studies revealed increases in galectin-1 mRNA and protein in spinal cords from SOD1 G93A mice, and in galectin-3 and -9 mRNAs and proteins in spinal cords of both SOD1G93A mice and sporadic ALS patients. As the increase in galectin-3 appeared in early presymptomatic stages and increased progressively through to end stage of disease in the mouse, it was selected for additional study, where it was found to be mainly expressed by microglia. Galectin-3 antagonists …

Knowledge of environmental factors influencing demography of weed species will improve understanding of current and future weed invasions. The objective of this study was to quantify regional-scale variation in vital rates of giant ragweed and common sunflower. To accomplish this objective, a common field experiment was conducted across seven sites between 2006 and 2008 throughout the north central U.S. maize belt. Demographic parameters of both weed species were measured in intra- and interspecific competitive environments, and environmental data were collected within site-years. Site was the strongest predictor of belowground vital rates (summer and winter seed survival and seedling recruitment), indicating …

Cofeel: Using Emotions For Social Interaction In Group Recommender Systems, Yu Chen, Pearl Pu

Faculty Publications, Information Systems & Technology

Group and social recommender systems aim to suggest items of interest to a group or a community of people. One important issue in such environment is to understand each individual’s preference and attitude within the group. Social and behavioral scientist have evidenced the role of emotions in group work and social communication. This paper aims to examine the role of emotion for social interaction in group recommenders. We implemented CoFeel, an interface that aims to provide emotional input in group recommenders. We further apply CoFeel in a GroupFun, a mobile group music recommender system. Results of an in-depth field study …

Relational Aesthetics And Emotional Relations: Leadership On Board Merchant Marine Ships, Nana Gharibyan-Kefalloniti, David Sims

Organization Management Journal

Life on board merchant marine ships is very tough, very male, and isolated from much of the rest of the world by language, culture, and usually a large expanse of sea. This article presents data that show that leadership in this environment is full of aesthetic appreciation that is often relational, arising in interaction with others’ appreciation, and also full of strongly felt emotion. Those who exercise leadership on merchant marine ships (captains, chief engineers, first officers) turn out to have strong views on the importance of understanding aesthetics and emotions in discharging their responsibilities. We illuminate these leaders’ aesthetics …

Phthalate Exposure Changes The Metabolic Profile Of Cardiac Muscle Cells, Nikki G. Posnack, Luther M. Swift, Matthew W. Kay, Norman H. Lee, Narine Sarvazyan

Pharmacology and Physiology Faculty Publications

Background: Phthalates are common plasticizers present in medical-grade plastics and other everyday products. They can also act as endocrine-disrupting chemicals and have been linked to the rise in metabolic disorders. However, the effect of phthalates on cardiac metabolism remains largely unknown.

Objectives: We examined the effect of di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) on the metabolic profile of cardiomyocytes because alterations in metabolic processes can lead to cell dysfunction.

Methods: Neonatal rat cardiomyocytes were treated with DEHP at a concentration and duration comparable to clinical exposure (50–100 μg/mL, 72 hr). We assessed the effect of DEHP on gene expression using microarray analysis. Physiological responses …
