Reinterpreting Bateman Gradients: Multiple Mating And Selection In Both Sexes Of A Songbird Species, N.M. Gerlach, J.W Mcglothlin, P.G Parker, E.D Ketterson Sep 2012

Reinterpreting Bateman Gradients: Multiple Mating And Selection In Both Sexes Of A Songbird Species, N.M. Gerlach, J.W Mcglothlin, P.G Parker, E.D Ketterson

Biology Department Faculty Works

Bateman’s principle, which states that male reproductive success should increase with multiple mating, whereas female reproductive success should not, has long been used to explain sex differences in behavior. The statistical relationship between mating success and reproductive success, or Bateman gradient, has been proposed as a way to quantify sex differences in sexual selection. We used a long-term data set on the distribution of paternity in the socially monogamous dark-eyed junco to examine the effect of multiple mating on lifetime reproductive success and to determine the relative contributions of within-pair and extra-pair mating. Both sexes exhibited a strong positive Bateman …

Mapping Shallow Water Habitats Of The Wallabi Group, Houtman Abrolhos Islands, Using Remote Sensing Techniques, Scott N. Evans, Lynda M. Bellchambers, K Murray

Fisheries Research Reports

The use of mapping techniques to identify and quantify habitats is becoming an increasingly important tool for the effective management of marine resources. With a multitude of techniques such as remote sensing, acoustic surveys and towed video all commonly used, the decision on the methodology to use depends on the resolution of output data required to answer the objectives of the survey, the spatial extent and location of survey site as well as the associated costs of surveying

Inflammation, Organomegaly, And Muscle Wasting Despite Hyperphagia In A Mouse Model Of Burn Cachexia., Felipe E Pedroso, Paul B Spalding, Michael C Cheung, Relin Yang, Juan C Gutierrez, Andrea Bonetto, Rui Zhan, Ho Lam Chan, Nicholas Namias, Leonidas G Koniaris, Teresa A Zimmers Sep 2012

Inflammation, Organomegaly, And Muscle Wasting Despite Hyperphagia In A Mouse Model Of Burn Cachexia., Felipe E Pedroso, Paul B Spalding, Michael C Cheung, Relin Yang, Juan C Gutierrez, Andrea Bonetto, Rui Zhan, Ho Lam Chan, Nicholas Namias, Leonidas G Koniaris, Teresa A Zimmers

Department of Cancer Biology Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Burn injury results in a chronic inflammatory, hypermetabolic, and hypercatabolic state persisting long after initial injury and wound healing. Burn survivors experience a profound and prolonged loss of lean body mass, fat mass, and bone mineral density, associated with significant morbidity and reduced quality of life. Understanding the mechanisms responsible is essential for developing therapies. A complete characterization of the pathophysiology of burn cachexia in a reproducible mouse model was lacking.

METHODS: Young adult (12-16 weeks of age) male C57BL/6J mice were given full thickness burns using heated brass plates or sham injury. Food and water intake, organ and …

Longitudinal Associations Between Executive Control And Developing Mathematical Competence In Preschool Boys And Girls, Caron A. C. Clark, Tiffany Sheffield, Sandra A. Wiebe, Kimberly A. Espy Sep 2012

Longitudinal Associations Between Executive Control And Developing Mathematical Competence In Preschool Boys And Girls, Caron A. C. Clark, Tiffany Sheffield, Sandra A. Wiebe, Kimberly A. Espy

Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory: Faculty Publications

Executive control (EC) is related to mathematics performance in middle childhood. However, little is known regarding how EC and informal numeracy differentially support mathematics skill acquisition in preschoolers. A sample of preschoolers (115 girls, 113 boys), stratified by social risk, completed an EC task battery at 3 years, informal numeracy assessments at 3.75 and 4.5 years, and a broad mathematics assessment during kindergarten. Strong associations were observed between latent EC at age 3 and mathematics achievement in kindergarten, which remained robust after accounting for earlier informal numeracy, socioeconomic status, language and processing speed. Relations between EC and mathematics achievement were …

Macrophage Autophagy In Immunity To Cryptococcus Neoformans And Candida Albicans, Magdia De Jesus Sep 2012

Macrophage Autophagy In Immunity To Cryptococcus Neoformans And Candida Albicans, Magdia De Jesus

Biomedical Sciences Faculty Scholarship

Autophagy is used by eukaryotes in bulk cellular material recycling and in immunity to intracellular pathogens. We evaluated the role of macrophage autophagy in the response to Cryptococcus neoformans and Candida albicans, two important opportunistic fungal pathogens. The autophagosome marker LC3 (microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3 alpha) was present in most macrophage vacuoles containing C. albicans. In contrast, LC3 was found in only a few vacuoles containing C. neoformans previously opsonized with antibody but never after complement-mediated phagocytosis. Disruption of host autophagy in vitro by RNA interference against ATG5 (autophagy-related 5) decreased the phagocytosis of C. albicans and the …

Using Hplc And Spe To Determine The Effectiveness Of Wastewater Treatment Plants In The Removal Of Caffeine And Its Metabolites, Erin Hain, Jeanne Franz Sep 2012

Using Hplc And Spe To Determine The Effectiveness Of Wastewater Treatment Plants In The Removal Of Caffeine And Its Metabolites, Erin Hain, Jeanne Franz

Student Research and Creative Projects 2012-2013

There is no natural source for caffeine even though a small amount is found in groundwater. This research is designed to determine the percentage of caffeine in groundwater and try to decide which wastewater treatment process, if any, is most effective at eliminating the caffeine. In order to determine this, a method that can measure caffeine at low levels was developed. UV-visible spectrophotometry (UV-vis) was used to find the lambda max of each sample at a 10-7 g/mL dilution in order to develop a High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) method. The caffeine standards were then run using HPLC with UV-vis …

Motivations For Law Student Pro Bono: Lessons Learned From The Tuscaloosa Tornado, Kelly Alison Behre Sep 2012

Motivations For Law Student Pro Bono: Lessons Learned From The Tuscaloosa Tornado, Kelly Alison Behre

Buffalo Public Interest Law Journal

After a tornado devastated Tuscaloosa, Alabama, on April 27, 2011, law students at the University of Alabama organized and engaged in substantial legal and nonlegal service. Narratives from these students in the midst of their volunteer efforts reveal detailed accounts of their experiences and motivations for their service. In a time in which national law student pro bono rates remain low and law students continue to lose interest in social justice issues during their time in law school, these student narratives offer insight into why law students chose to volunteer through the lens of students who rose to the occasion …

Embroidered Politics: A Case Study Between Al-Andalus And Castilla, Miriam Ali-De-Unzaga Sep 2012

Embroidered Politics: A Case Study Between Al-Andalus And Castilla, Miriam Ali-De-Unzaga

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

A magnificent embroidered tunic was found in 1968 at the Monastery of OÒa in Burgos, Spain (one of the richest and most influential monasteries during the Iberian Medieval period). The significance and great value of this embroidery, produced in al-Andalus, is threefold: 1) Its high material value: made of silk and gold of extremely high quality. 2) Its visual value, which includes Arabic inscriptions (eulogies and qur'anic verses) and the iconography of a royal figure and sixty-six animals. 3) Its historical value: used and reused by Andalusi and Castilian rulers, the embroidery is an unexpected witness of the political relationships …

Object Based Research: A Q’Ing Vest, Hilary Baker Sep 2012

Object Based Research: A Q’Ing Vest, Hilary Baker

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

The Q'ing dynasty of China held its position of power from 1644-1911. Towards the end of their reign, the practice of selling ranks to citizens became commonplace in order to help fund the failing dynasty. The University of Rhode Island acquired a Q'ing dynasty vest (accession number 90.01.11), which is presumably a female's piece of dress dating from the late nineteenth century. This vest is missing the rank badge that would normally be positioned on the front and back of the vest. Because the rank badge is missing, this paper will focus on the embroidery surrounding the empty space to …

Building On The Past, Making The Future, Stephanie Bunn

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Kyrgyzstan has experienced extreme political and economic disruption since independence, most notably economic collapse and two subsequent revolutions. In the Soviet era, women's domestic textile practices, especially felt-making, continued, albeit less frequently than prior to the Russian conquest. During my first fieldwork in the early 1990's, felt was largely made at home. Most often it was found in the homes of people's grandmothers, although younger women did still make felt shyrdaks to give to daughters for weddings. Great experts were feted by Soviet officials, given medals, and work was sold in tourist shops, but in general, all textile arts were …

Can We Study Textiles From Other Cultures Without Ethnocentrism? The Andes As A Case Study, Sophie Desrosiers Sep 2012

Can We Study Textiles From Other Cultures Without Ethnocentrism? The Andes As A Case Study, Sophie Desrosiers

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

The Andes as Case Study Textile studies look like a field where the materiality of the objects cannot allow us a distorted view. Nevertheless, the textile education we received, and some methods and tools we use, sometimes impede us from seeing and understanding what is under our eyes. In some ways, we are not fully ready to recognize the originality and achievement of Andean weavers' thoughts, a question which is as political, as it is scientific. One example is the importance given in Western culture to the direction of the warp to indicate the orientation of tapestries. As long as …

Political Intentions Of Chinese Textiles In Portuguese Sacred, Solemn, Celebratory Events Of The16th - 18th Centuries, Maria João Pacheco Ferreira Sep 2012

Political Intentions Of Chinese Textiles In Portuguese Sacred, Solemn, Celebratory Events Of The16th - 18th Centuries, Maria João Pacheco Ferreira

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Among the many goods that offer visible testimony of the transmission of Asian material culture westwards, as a result of the Portuguese Overseas Expansion, Chinese textiles deserve special attention. Made entirely of silk and following Chinese designs, or adapted to Portuguese taste, these textiles began reaching by Portugal by way of Guangzhou and Macau, from at least 1557, and quickly became part of the decorative displays conceived for extraordinary sacred events performed in Portugal until the 18th century. Careful analysis of contemporary printed texts describing these ceremonies reveals how textiles were intensely used in church decoration programs. Chinese textiles, although …
