The Roles Of Empathy And Anger In The Regulation Of Third-Party Punishment, Eric J. Pedersen
The Roles Of Empathy And Anger In The Regulation Of Third-Party Punishment, Eric J. Pedersen
Open Access Theses
Some researchers have recently promoted the idea that humans possess an instinct to “altruistically” punish social norm violators—that is, to intervene as unaffected third parties and punish transgressors at a personal cost, even when they have no hope of reaping any direct benefit from the punishment. Both the evolutionary theorizing and the empirical findings that are marshaled in support of this claim have been called into question, and results from a recent investigation strongly suggest that humans do not, in fact, punish altruistically as third parties on behalf of strangers. However, humans do engage in third-party punishment on behalf of …

Cilostazol is a phosphodiesterase inhibitor that has been shown to inhibit platelet activation. Endothelin is known to be the most potent endogenous growth promoting and vasoactive peptide. In patients and animal models with stroke, the level of circulating endothelin increases and complicates the recovery progress contributed by vascular constriction (an immediate pathology) and vascular proliferation (a long-term pathology). However, the effects of cilostazol on endothelin have not been explored. To demonstrate the dual-antagonizing effects of cilostazol on vasoconstriction and cell proliferation induced by endothelin, we used primary culture of mouse vascular smooth muscle cells in vitro, mouse femoral artery ex …

Case Study Of Indoor Air Quality Of Health Care Facilities And Hospitals In Malaysia / Phuah Kok Sun, Kok Sun Phuah
Case Study Of Indoor Air Quality Of Health Care Facilities And Hospitals In Malaysia / Phuah Kok Sun, Kok Sun Phuah
Student Works (2010-2019)
Hospitals and healthcare facilities are buildings that require proper design for diverse environment due to their nature. The comfort of occupants and the spread of germs should be consider in the design of such facilities. Airborne diseases have become a serious concern after the spread of influenza H1N1 and Severe Acture Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) viruses. Healthcare facilities, particularly those built in the past, do not consider air as the transport medium for infectious diseases. Most of the recent studies in indoor air control revolve around specialized environments such as isolation rooms and operating theatres. This dissertation studies the indoor air …

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Diel vertical migration (DVM) of some zooplankters in eutrophic lakes is often compressed during peak hypoxia. To better understand the indirect consequences of seasonal hypolimnetic hypoxia, we integrated laboratory-based experimental and field-based observational approaches to quantify how compressed DVM can affect growth of a cladoceran, Daphnia mendotae, in central Lake Erie, North America. To evaluate hypoxia tolerance of D. mendotae, we conducted a survivorship experiment with varying dissolved oxygen concentrations, which demonstrated high sensitivity of D. mendotae to hypoxia (≤2 mg O2 l−1), supporting the field observations of their behavioral avoidance of the hypoxic hypolimnion. To investigate the …

The Inherent Instability Of The Financial System, Kim De Glossop
The Inherent Instability Of The Financial System, Kim De Glossop
The Journal of Business, Entrepreneurship & the Law
The article explores one of the causes of the financial crisis of 2008 and of financial crises generally. The argument of the paper is that rather than tend toward equilibrium, financial and asset markets have a tendency to become unstable after prolonged periods of stability. The main driver of this process is the expansion of credit. Debt feeds its way into higher asset prices which in turn justify the accumulation of more debt to purchase further assets, and so on. The basis for the idea is Hyman Minsky's Financial Instability Hypothesis, itself a reinterpretation of The General Theory of Employment, …

On The Respectful Use Of Animals, Jon Garthoff
On The Respectful Use Of Animals, Jon Garthoff
Between the Species
In his essay “The Integration of the Ethic of the Respectful Use of Animals into the Law”, David Favre begins to articulate a new framework for understanding the legal status of nonhuman animals. The present essay supports the broad contours of Favre’s framework, but raises challenges for some of the framework’s elements. The first half questions Favre’s claim that possession of DNA and the capacity for life underlie the need for a more robust conception of animal legal standing. The second half questions Favre’s prior proposal that animals be deemed persons under law and questions his pragmatic suggestion that judges …

Formation And Stabilization Of Combustion-Generated, Environmentally Persistent Radicals On Ni(Ii)O Supported On A Silica Surface, Eric Vejerano, Slawomir M. Lomnicki, Barry Dellinger
Faculty Publications
Previous studies have indicated environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) are formed when hydroxyl- and chlorine-substituted aromatics chemisorbed on Cu(II)O and Fe(III)2O3 surfaces and were stabilized through their interactions with the surface metal cation. The current study reports our laboratory investigation on the formation and stabilization of EPFRs on a Ni(II)O surface. The EPFRs were produced by the chemisorption of adsorbates on the supported metal oxide surface and transfer of an electron from the adsorbate to the metal center, resulting in reduction of the metal cation. Depending on the temperature and the nature of the adsorbate, more than one type of …

Green Bay Chronic Nuisance Notification Evaluation, 2006–2010, Troy C. Payne, Michelle Arneson
Green Bay Chronic Nuisance Notification Evaluation, 2006–2010, Troy C. Payne, Michelle Arneson
Reports
Green Bay City Ordinance Chapter 28 allows the City of Green Bay, Wisconsin to recover the cost of providing police services for chronic nuisances. Enforcement of Chapter 28 began in October 2006 and continues as of this writing. This report examined calls for service at properties with chronic nuisance enforcement to determine if enforcement was associated with a reduction in calls for service. Enforcing the chronic nuisance ordinance is associated with reduced calls for service but is costly in terms of officer and analyst hours. The best use of the chronic nuisance ordinance may be as a credible threat to …

Regional Rarity: Consequences Of Dispersal Limitation And Strategies For Reintroduction, Steven James Kroiss
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Understanding factors that limit species distributions within restored habitats has been a longstanding goal of restoration ecology, particularly with respect to differences between rare and widespread species. Numerous mechanisms have been proposed to contribute to rarity, including species traits, propagule limitation, ecological requirements, and population level processes such as demographic and environmental stochasticity. Yet, our understanding of species rarity remains limited since few studies have examined how these factors act in concert. This dissertation examines how these mechanisms may interact to influence the distribution and population establishment of plant species in restored xeric glades in the Missouri Ozarks: USA). First, …

Organization Of The Streptococcal Exportal And Its Interaction With Cationic Antimicrobial Peptides, Luis Alberto Vega
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Streptococcus pyogenes and other Gram-positive pathogens are highly dependent on secreted virulence proteins for their ability to colonize a host and evade the immune effectors that act on pathogens to prevent this. Unlike eukaryotes and Gram-negative bacteria, all Gram-positive pathogens lack a cellular compartment dedicated to folding and processing secreted proteins once they have been translocated across the cytoplasmic membrane. S. pyogenes and other Gram-positive organisms overcome this challenge by clustering the secretory translocons at a defined anionic lipid microdomain of the cytoplasmic membrane that is enriched for accessory factors needed for protein biogenesis, referred to as the ExPortal. The …
