Towards Leaner Healthcare Facility: Application Of Simulation Modelling And Value Stream Mapping, Waleed Abo Hamad, John Crowe, Amr Arisha
Towards Leaner Healthcare Facility: Application Of Simulation Modelling And Value Stream Mapping, Waleed Abo Hamad, John Crowe, Amr Arisha
Conference Papers
Recently, the application of lean thinking in healthcare has grown significantly in response to rising demand caused by population growth, ageing and high expectations of service quality. However, insufficient justifications and lack of quantifiable evidence are the main obstacles to convince healthcare executives to adopt lean. Therefore, this paper presents a methodology that integrates lean tools with simulation to enhance the quality of patient care in healthcare facilities. This enables healthcare organisations to dedicate more time and effort to patient care without extra cost to the organisation or to the patient. Value stream mapping is used to identify value-added and …

Current Strategies For Promoting Regeneration After Spinal Cord Injury, Seth Schirmer
Current Strategies For Promoting Regeneration After Spinal Cord Injury, Seth Schirmer
Student Theses and Dissertations
Each year 12,000 people suffer spinal cord injury (SCI) in the USA. Thus, it is critical we find a means by which to stimulate regeneration in the injured spinal cord towards recovery of function in these patients. Therefore, significant amount of federal and private funding is directed to SCI research, with research focusing on anything measures from using embryonic stem cells to replace damaged cells, to stimulating regeneration through daily physical therapy. This paper is a review of some of the current strategies evolved from such research for promoting spinal cord regeneration after spinal cord injury, and has focused on …
Efficient Algorithms For Improving The Accuracy In Motifs Prediction, Jerlin C. Merlin
Efficient Algorithms For Improving The Accuracy In Motifs Prediction, Jerlin C. Merlin
Master's Theses
Analysis of sequence homology has always played a major role in the understanding of biological factors such as protein domain identification, gene product relationships, and gene function determination. Short contiguous protein sequences that are conserved across proteins provide important information about such factors, and are of at most 15 residues in length. These segments of proteins are known as minimotifs. Identifying minimotifs has been of much use in the formulation of the hypothesis about the biological functions that otherwise might be uncharacterized. Mechanisms of motif predictions such as Minimotif Miner are widely used for predicting minimotifs. However, due to the …

Phosphoinositide-3-kinase (PI3K)/Akt dependent signaling has been shown to improve outcome in sepsis/septic shock. There is also ample evidence that PI3K/Akt dependent signaling plays a crucial role in maintaining normal cardiac function. We hypothesized that PI3K/Akt signaling may ameliorate septic shock by attenuating sepsis-induced cardiac dysfunction. Cardiac function and survival were evaluated in transgenic mice with cardiac myocyte specific expression of constitutively active PI3K isoform, p110α (caPI3K Tg). caPI3K Tg and wild type (WT) mice were subjected to cecal ligation/puncture (CLP) induced sepsis. Wild type CLP mice showed dramatic cardiac dysfunction at 6 hrs. Septic cardiomyopathy was significantly attenuated in caPI3K …

Translational Neuroscience
Objectives. To determine if therapy with pioglitazone HCl and tretinoin could slow disease progression in patients with ALS. Levels of tau and pNFH in the cerebrospinal fluid were measured to see if they could serve as prognostic indicators. Methods. 27 subjects on stable doses of riluzole were enrolled. Subjects were randomized to receive pioglitazone 30 mg/d and tretinoin 10 mg/BID for six months or two matching placebos. ALSFRS-R scores were followed monthly. At baseline and at the final visit, lumbar punctures (LPs) were performed to measure cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarker levels. Results. Subjects treated with tretinoin, pioglitazone, and riluzole had …

Influence Of Microsite Disturbance On The Establishment Of Two Congeneric Invasive Thistles, Emily S.J. Rauschert, Katriona Shea
Biological, Geological, and Environmental Faculty Publications
The successful establishment of invasive species has been shown to depend on aspects of the invaded community, such as gap characteristics. Biotic resistance may be particularly critical for stopping invaders at early life history stages, but new species can often invade following disturbances, which may create microsites with very different characteristics than are usually present. We examine the response of two invasive thistle species, Carduus nutans L. and C. acanthoides L., to three different microsite characteristics: disturbance type, size, and water availability. The two species initially responded differently to the type of disturbance: C. acanthoides had higher emergence and survival …

Pitfall traps were used to sample beetles (Coleoptera) in plots with or without inputs of dead loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) wood at four locations (Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina and Texas) on the coastal plain of the southeastern United States. The plots were established in 1998 and sampling took place in 1998, 1999, and 2002 (only 1998 for North Carolina). Overall, beetles were more species rich, abundant and diverse in dead wood addition plots than in reference plots. While these differences were greatest in 1998 and lessened thereafter, they were not found to be significant in 1998 due largely to …

Characterization Of The Uptake And Biodistribution Of The Nanoparticles Quantum Dots And Carbon Nanotubes, Taylor Michelle Ingle
Characterization Of The Uptake And Biodistribution Of The Nanoparticles Quantum Dots And Carbon Nanotubes, Taylor Michelle Ingle
Student Theses and Dissertations
With the rapidly expanding field of nanotechnology and the use of nanoparticles, it becomes crucial that science advances in the understanding of the potential associated risks. Inevitably, the increase in use of these particles will result in greater occurrence of exposure. Not only is their relatively small size of concern, but so are the changes in physiochemical characteristics that occur at the nanoscale. A few examples of physical properties that can change as particle sizes become smaller is their color, melting point , optical properties, and solar absorption. While these properties may be beneficial in applications, they can also alter …
Using Genetic Information In Risk Prediction For Alcohol Dependence, Jia Yan
Using Genetic Information In Risk Prediction For Alcohol Dependence, Jia Yan
Theses and Dissertations
Family-based and genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of alcohol dependence (AD) have reported numerous associated variants. The clinical validity of these variants for predicting AD compared to family history has not yet been reported. These studies aim to explore the aggregate impact of multiple genetic variants with small effect sizes on risk prediction in order to provide a clinical interpretation of genetic contributions to AD. Data simulations showed that given AD’s prevalence and heritability, a risk prediction model incorporating all genetic contributions would have an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) approaching 0.80, which is often a target AUC …

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications
PURPOSE. To study the effect of age on the morphologic and biochemical alterations induced by in vivo exposure of ultraviolet radiation (UV).
METHODS. Young and old C57BL/6 mice were exposed to broadband UVBþUVA and euthanized after 2 days. Another batch of UV-exposed young mice was monitored for changes after 1, 2, 4, and 8 days. Age-matched nonexposed mice served as controls. Lens changes were documented in vivo by slit-lamp biomicroscopy and dark field microscopy photographs ex vivo. Lens homogenates were analyzed for glutathione (GSH) level, and the activities of thioredoxin (Trx), thioltransferase (TTase), and glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (G3PD). Glutathionylated lens proteins …

Introduction: The phenomenon of sexual conflict has been well documented, and in populations with biased operational sex ratios the consequences for the rarer sex can be severe. Females are typically a limited resource and males often evolve aggressive mating behaviors, which can improve individual fitness for the male while negatively impacting female condition and fitness. In response, females can adjust their behavior to minimize exposure to aggressive mating tactics or minimize the costs of mating harassment. While male-male competition is common in amphibian mating systems, little is known about the consequences or responses of females. The red-spotted newt (Notophthalmus …
