Perceptions Of Catholic Identity: Views Of Catholic School Administrators And Teachers, John J. Convey Sep 2012

Perceptions Of Catholic Identity: Views Of Catholic School Administrators And Teachers, John J. Convey

Journal of Catholic Education

This article presents the results of a survey conducted in 2010 of over 3,300 administrators and teachers in Catholic elementary and secondary schools nationally about their understanding of the meaning of the term “Catholic identity.” The survey was conducted in the fall of 2010 in anticipation of a national conference on the Catholic identity of Catholic elementary and secondary schools at The Catholic University of America, October 2-4, 2011. The vast majority of respondents viewed the school’s culture or faith community as the most important component of its Catholic identity. The longer the teacher or administrator worked in Catholic schools, …

Teaching A Catholic Philosophy Of Interpersonal Communication: The Case For “Soul Friendship”, Kathleen Glenister Roberts Sep 2012

Teaching A Catholic Philosophy Of Interpersonal Communication: The Case For “Soul Friendship”, Kathleen Glenister Roberts

Journal of Catholic Education

While social justice education has a rich and ancient history within the Catholic Church, academic disciplines have only recently begun to make the idea of social justice relevant within courses for undergraduates. In the communication discipline, debate about social justice has been lively and varied over the last two decades, and has provided rich entry points for philosophical interpretation. This paper considers interpersonal communication from the vantage point of social justice in the Catholic intellectual tradition. While the importance of friendship for society is nothing new (Aristotle addressed this issue in the Nicomachean Ethics), contemporary cultural hindrances to a just …

Serotonin And Synaptic Transmission At Invertebrate Neuromuscular Junctions, Wen-Hui Wu, Robin L. Cooper Sep 2012

Serotonin And Synaptic Transmission At Invertebrate Neuromuscular Junctions, Wen-Hui Wu, Robin L. Cooper

Biology Faculty Publications

The serotonergic system in vertebrates and invertebrates has been a focus for over 50 years and will likely continue in the future. Recently, genomic analysis and discovery of alternative splicing and differential expression in tissues have increased the knowledge of serotonin (5-HT) receptor types. Comparative studies can provide useful insights to the wide variety of mechanistic actions of 5-HT responsible for behaviors regulated or modified by 5-HT. To determine cellular responses and influences on neural systems as well as the efferent control of behaviors by the motor units, preparations amenable to detailed studies of synapses are beneficial as working models. …

Foundational Issues In Educating Young People For Understanding And Appreciation Of The Religions In Their Communities, Kathleen Engebretson Sep 2012

Foundational Issues In Educating Young People For Understanding And Appreciation Of The Religions In Their Communities, Kathleen Engebretson

Journal of Catholic Education

This is a conceptual paper considering some of the foundational issues that a teacher needs to have at least considered (if not resolved) when he or she sets out to encourage students to understand and appreciate the variety of religions in their communities. The first issue is that of what to call the enterprise; the second relates to assumed hierarchies of religions and the barriers these can impose on genuine education about religions; the third issue is that of the fundamentalist student; the fourth issue is the pervasive presence of religious history especially when religion has been the oppressor; the …

Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications

Perlecan Domain V (DV) promotes brain angiogenesis by inducing VEGF release from brain endothelial cells (BECs) following stroke. In this study, we define the specific mechanism of DV interaction with the α(5)β(1) integrin, identify the downstream signal transduction pathway, and further investigate the functional significance of resultant VEGF release. Interestingly, we found that the LG3 portion of DV, which has been suggested to possess most of DV's angio-modulatory activity outside of the brain, binds poorly to α(5)β(1) and induces less BEC proliferation compared to full length DV. Additionally, we implicate DV's DGR sequence as an important element for the interaction …

What Is The Predictive Power Of The Colobine Protein-To-Fiber Model And Its Conservation Value?, Jan F. Gogarten, Melissa Guzman, Colin A. Chapman, Aerin L. Jacob, Patrick A. Omeja, Jessica Rothman

Publications and Research

Predicting variation in animal abundance across time and space has proven very difficult; however, a model exists to predict the biomass of small folivorous primates that has considerable correlative support. This model suggests that the protein-to-fiber ratio of leaves in a habitat can predict folivore biomass. Here we present an experimental test of this protein-to-fiber model to assess if the number of infant monkeys per female and group size can be predicted based on the leaf chemistry of a habitat. We expected regenerating forest in Kibale National Park, Uganda to have leaves with higher concentrations of crude protein and lower …

Caregiving: A Qualitative Concept Analysis, Melinda Hermanns, Beth Mastel-Smith Sep 2012

Caregiving: A Qualitative Concept Analysis, Melinda Hermanns, Beth Mastel-Smith

The Qualitative Report

A common definition of caregiving does not exist. In an attempt to define the concept of caregiving, the authors used a hybrid qualitative model of concept development to analyze caregiving. The model consists of three phases: (a) theoretical, (b) fieldwork, and (c) analytical. The theoretical phase involves conducting an interdisciplinary literature search, examining existing definitions, and developing a working definition of caregiving. In the fieldwork phase, six participants were interviewed using a structured interview guide. Qualitative data analysis led to the development of two overarching themes: Holistic Care and Someone in Need of Help. Responses from participants were compared to …

Taxonomic Identity Of The Invasive Fruit Fly Pest, Bactrocera Invadens: Concordance In Morphometry And Dna Barcoding, Fathiya M. Khamis, Daniel K. Masiga, Samira A. Mohamed, Daisy Salifu, Marc De Meyer, Sunday Ekesi

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

In 2003, a new fruit fly pest species was recorded for the first time in Kenya and has subsequently been found in 28 countries across tropical Africa. The insect was described as Bactrocera invadens, due to its rapid invasion of the African continent. In this study, the morphometry and DNA Barcoding of different populations of B. invadens distributed across the species range of tropical Africa and a sample from the pest's putative aboriginal home of Sri Lanka was investigated. Morphometry using wing veins and tibia length was used to separate B. invadens populations from other closely related Bactrocera species. The …

Department of Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine Faculty Papers & Presentations

Migration stimulating factor (MSF) is a genetically truncated N-terminal isoform of fibronectin that is highly expressed during mammalian development in fetal fibroblasts, and during tumor formation in human cancer-associated myofibroblasts. However, its potential functional role in regulating tumor metabolism remains unexplored. Here, we generated an immortalized fibroblast cell line that recombinantly overexpresses MSF and studied their properties relative to vector-alone control fibroblasts. Our results indicate that overexpression of MSF is sufficient to confer myofibroblastic differentiation, likely via increased TGF-b signaling. In addition, MSF activates the inflammation-associated transcription factor NFκB, resulting in the onset of autophagy/mitophagy, thereby driving glycolytic metabolism (L-lactate …

Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis Activity And The Subsequent Response To Chronic Stress Differ Depending Upon Life History Stage, Christine R. Lattin, Carolyn M. Bauer, Robert De Bruijn, L. Michael Romero

Faculty Publications

The hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is modulated seasonally in many species, and chronic stress can alter HPA functioning. However, it is not known how these two factors interact - are there particular life history stages when animals are more or less vulnerable to chronic stress? We captured wild house sparrows (Passer domesticus) in Massachusetts during six different life history stages: early and late winter, pre-laying, breeding, late breeding, and molt. At each time point, we tested HPA function by measuring baseline and stress-induced corticosterone (CORT), negative feedback in response to an injection of dexamethasone, and maximum adrenal response through an injection …

« Et Mon Père Signa Le Bail Qui L’Exilait De Paris ». Les Maisons D’Écrivain Au Prisme De La Cartographie, Marie-Clémence Régnier

Artl@s Bulletin

This article presents axes generated by car-tography for a study on writers’ houses from the 19th century onwards on various scales of analysis. The monographic scale, applied to Victor Hugo’s trajectory in Paris, questions the relationship between literary activity and urban areas. On a European scale, the study on the origins of writers’ houses and their establishment raises hypothesis on the spatial logics at stake. Finally, from a regional point of view, this study also allows us to interrogate the role of local political strategies to which these houses are nowadays subject.

Artl@S: A Spatial And Trans-National Art History Origins And Positions Of A Research Program, Béatrice Joyeux-Prunel

Artl@s Bulletin

ARTL@S is a project on the spatial and trans-national history of the arts and humanities, based on the collaboration of quantitative methods and cartographic visualization. These two strategies fit into a perspective nourished by critical and sociological theory that, in short, aims to highlight not only the link between a work of art and its space, but also its underlying political, social, aesthetic or economic issues. From this standpoint, we have chosen to take advantage of what a digi-tal approach can offer: the constitution of da-tabases, quantitative analysis, graphic and geographic representations of data, as well as the Internet. Jews In The Gym: Judaism, Sports, And Athletics, Leonard Greenspoon Sep 2012

Jews In The Gym: Judaism, Sports, And Athletics, Leonard Greenspoon

Studies in Jewish Civilization

For some, the connection between Jews and athletics might seem far-fetched. But in fact, as is highlighted by the fourteen chapters in this collection, Jews have been participating in—and thinking about—sports for more than two thousand years.

The articles in this volume scan a wide chronological range: from the Hellenistic period (first century BCE) to the most recent basketball season. The range of athletes covered is equally broad: from participants in Roman-style games to wrestlers, boxers, fencers, baseball players, and basketball stars. The authors of these essays, many of whom actively participate in athletics themselves, raise a number of intriguing …

Artl@S And Basart: A Loose Coupling Strategy For Digital Humanities, Sorin A. Matei

Artl@s Bulletin

The core ARTL@S digital humanities strategy is that of loosely coupling resources, platforms, and use scenar-ios. A number of sites will feed from the same geodatabase (BasArt), which will be enriched by users with new content. Inspired by the Web 2.0 design principles, ARTL@S relies on the BasArt API, which will enable an ecosystem of sites to use primary data to generate their own maps, charts, and tables. A variety of eco-nomic models will also be used to support the site, from free to pay-based. User-generated content will be monitored by data management and curation techniques that will ensure the …

The Bench Scientist's Guide To Statistical Analysis Of Rna-Seq Data, Craig R. Yendrek, Elizabeth A. Ainsworth, Jyothi Thimmapuram

Cyber Center Publications

RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) is emerging as a highly accurate method to quantify transcript abundance. However, analyses of the large data sets obtained by sequencing the entire transcriptome of organisms have generally been performed by bioinformatics specialists. Here we provide a step-by-step guide and outline a strategy using currently available statistical tools that results in a conservative list of differentially expressed genes. We also discuss potential sources of error in RNA-Seq analysis that could alter interpretation of global changes in gene expression.
