An Experimental Evaluation Of The Use Of C3 Δ13C Plant Tissue As A Proxy For The Paleoatmospheric Δ13Co2 Signature Of Air, B. H. Lomax, C. A. Knight, J. A. Lake Sep 2012

An Experimental Evaluation Of The Use Of C3 Δ13C Plant Tissue As A Proxy For The Paleoatmospheric Δ13Co2 Signature Of Air, B. H. Lomax, C. A. Knight, J. A. Lake

Biological Sciences

Previous work suggests that the relationship between the carbon isotope composition of air (d13Ca) and plant leaf tissue (d13Cp) can be used to track changes in the carbon isotope composition of paleo-atmospheric CO2. Here we test this assertion in a series of experiments using the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana grown under a range of atmospheric CO2 concentrations relevant to geologic time (380, 760, 1000, 1500, 2000 and 3000 ppm). Nested within these CO2 experiments water availability was controlled (giving two sets of experimental plants; low and high water treatment at each CO2 concentration) to manipulate stomatal opening, a key process …

Intention And Interpretation In Hans Namuth's Film, Jackson Pollock, Michael Schreyach Sep 2012

Intention And Interpretation In Hans Namuth's Film, Jackson Pollock, Michael Schreyach

Art and Art History Faculty Research

Because many of Jackson Pollock's most familiar statements are multiply authored, they seem to challenge basic assumptions regarding the transparency of intention to meaning that they are often presumed to enunciate. The fact that Pollock's public declarations about his work are collages, juxtaposing different voices and points of view with his own, complicates our assessment of their validity as univocal expressions of his intentions. In his film Jackson Pollock, Namuth utilizes those statements, many of which concern aspects of Pollock's technical procedure, as part of his strategy to ground the meaning of Pollock's paintings in the processby which …

Young Children’S Understanding Of Conservation Concepts, Julia C. Torquati Sep 2012

Young Children’S Understanding Of Conservation Concepts, Julia C. Torquati

Discipline-Based Education Research Group Speaker Series

This presentation will summarize an investigation of young children’s conservation knowledge and reasoning. Eighty‐two preschool aged children (3‐5 years) were interviewed at two points in time six months apart using a semi‐structured interview. The interview protocol developed by Peter Kahn (2001) was used to assess children’s conservation attitudes. This was the first time the interview was used with preschool aged children. Children were asked questions about the importance of animals, plants, parks, and gardens, and whether it is acceptable to litter (and why or why not). Fifty‐seven of the children attended a preschool located at a nature center, ten children …

News About Aggregate Demand And The Business Cycle, Jang-Ting Guo, Anca-Ioana Sirbu, Mark Weder Sep 2012

News About Aggregate Demand And The Business Cycle, Jang-Ting Guo, Anca-Ioana Sirbu, Mark Weder

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

We show that an otherwise standard one-sector real business cycle model with variable capital utilization and mild increasing returns-to-scale is able to generate qualitatively as well as quantitatively realistic aggregate fluctuations driven by news shocks to future consumption demand. In sharp contrast to many studies in the existing expectations- driven business cycle literature, our results do not rely on non-separable preferences or investment adjustment costs.

From Trademarks To Brands, Devin R. Desai Sep 2012

From Trademarks To Brands, Devin R. Desai

Florida Law Review

The business world has moved from using trademarks—simple symbols identifying products—to brands—rich symbols that feed business strategy. At the same time, networked and empowered consumers are using brands, brand language, and branding strategies to make decisions about what they purchase, express preferences about how corporations conduct their business, and call for changes in corporate practices. These changes are the future of commerce. But trademark law has not kept pace with either.

This Article argues that because brands are governed by trademark law, the full realization of brands as information resources is hindered. Current trademark law is blinkered and confused, and …

How To Think About Errors, Costs, And Their Allocation, Ronald J. Allen Sep 2012

How To Think About Errors, Costs, And Their Allocation, Ronald J. Allen

Florida Law Review

There is an ongoing, robust debate about the structure of litigation, and in particular, about access to the courts. For a considerable period of time, the mantra that the courts should be readily available to all the people so that people may present claims that their rights have been violated has dominated academic discourse and has, perhaps, significantly influenced the structure of litigation. This conventional view—that the courts should be freely open to all—was dealt a blow by the Iqbal and Twombly decisions, which imposed greater gatekeeping responsibilities on the federal district courts. These decisions predictably provoked a storm of …

Printing The Impossible Triangle: The Copyright Implications Of Three-Dimensional Printing, Brian Rideout Sep 2012

Printing The Impossible Triangle: The Copyright Implications Of Three-Dimensional Printing, Brian Rideout

The Journal of Business, Entrepreneurship & the Law

Three-dimensional printing (3D printing), which allows users to digitize and replicate objects, is emerging as the next potentially disruptive technology. It is now possible to “print” intricate objects from furniture to food to human organs. Because 3D printing relies on computer-based blueprints in order to create physical objects, digital copyright infringement can now impact the physical world. The first example occurred in February 2011, when the world's first Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) takedown notice for a 3D printed object was sent. This article describes how 3D printing works in relation to copyright law, first by discussing this DMCA takedown …

Grave Consequences For Economic Liberty: The Funeral Industry's Protectionist Occupational Licensing Scheme, The Circuit Split, And Why It Matters, Lana Harfoush Sep 2012

Grave Consequences For Economic Liberty: The Funeral Industry's Protectionist Occupational Licensing Scheme, The Circuit Split, And Why It Matters, Lana Harfoush

The Journal of Business, Entrepreneurship & the Law

This article examines a current circuit split regarding the constitutionality of restrictive occupational licensing schemes that exist only for protectionist purposes. The Sixth Circuit in Craigmiles v. Giles and the Tenth Circuit case Powers v. Harris, are cases that revolve around similar facts but reach opposite outcomes. The two cases profile state funeral industry licensing restrictions. In both cases, the plaintiffs were penalized for selling caskets without state-issued licenses. Though licensing restrictions in the funeral industry affect most Americans as consumers, the scope of this circuit split reaches into nearly every industry. When businesses lobby governments to enact legislation, they …

A Passion For Justice, Charles A. Reich Sep 2012

A Passion For Justice, Charles A. Reich

Touro Law Review

What makes a good judge or justice? The public has a need to know. But simplistic labels, such as "activist," "liberal" and "conservative," are both meaningless and misleading. Perhaps aformer law clerk can offer a different perspective.

I served with David J. Vann as law clerk to Justice Hugo L.Black during the momentous 1953 Term of the Supreme Court. This was the year when Brown v. Board of Education was decided. It was also the year when Chief Justice Vinson died and was replaced by the Governor of California, Earl Warren. And it was also a year in which the …

Creating 3d Web-Based Game Environment Using Bim Models For Virtual On-Site Visiting Of Building Hvac Systems, Zhigang Shen, Landu Jiang, Kevin Grosskopf, Charles Berryman Sep 2012

Creating 3d Web-Based Game Environment Using Bim Models For Virtual On-Site Visiting Of Building Hvac Systems, Zhigang Shen, Landu Jiang, Kevin Grosskopf, Charles Berryman

Faculty Publications

A web-based 3D game project was presented in this paper to demonstrate the process of using building information modeling (BIM) to create an interactive 3D on-line 'Green' training environment. The system architecture, the implementation process and major components of this virtual training environment were discussed. Existing studies on BIM-based collaborations mainly focused on local-file-sharing approach using proprietary applications. Limited research focused on using BIM as an online gaming platform to create a web browser-based interactive 3D virtual environment for collaboration, learning and/or training. The gap was partially caused by the lack of understanding how to implement a BIM-based game in …
