Simulation Design Approach For The Selection Of Alternative Commercial Passenger Aircraft Seating Configurations, Christopher A. Chung
Simulation Design Approach For The Selection Of Alternative Commercial Passenger Aircraft Seating Configurations, Christopher A. Chung
Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering
Loading strategies for commercial passenger aircraft have been a subject of recent study among air transportation research analysts. A fundamental assumption in the majority of these studies is the fixed configuration of passenger seats. Previous studies have focused on analyzing different strategies in an effort to reduce passenger loading time. This study takes a more proactive approach to the passenger loading process by starting with the design of the aircraft seating layout itself. Simulation analysis results indicate that alternative designs can result in loading time reductions between approximately 9–44%.

Fundamental differences in the distribution of oceans and landmasses in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres potentially impact patterns of biological diversity in the two areas. The evolutionary history of conifers provides an opportunity to explore these dynamics, because the majority of extant conifer species belong to lineages that have been broadly confined to the Northern or Southern Hemisphere during the Cenozoic. Incorporating genetic information with a critical review of fossil evidence, we developed an age-calibrated phylogeny sampling ∼80% of living conifer species. Most extant conifer species diverged recently during the Neogene within clades that generally were established during the later …

Background: Rabbits latent with HSV-1 strain McKrae spontaneously shed infectious virus and viral DNA into their tears and develop recurrent herpetic-specific corneal lesions. The rabbit eye model has been used for many years to assess acute ocular infections and pathogenesis, antiviral efficacy, as well as latency, reactivation, and recurrent eye diseases. This study used real-time PCR to quantify HSV-1 DNA in the saliva and tears of rabbits latent with HSV-1 McKrae. Methods. New Zealand white rabbits used were latent with HSV-1 strain McKrae and had no ocular or oral pathology. Scarified corneas were topically inoculated with HSV-1. Eye swabs and …

Translational Manipulation Polyaxial Screw Head, Thomas B. Freeman, Wesley M. Johnson
Translational Manipulation Polyaxial Screw Head, Thomas B. Freeman, Wesley M. Johnson
USF Patents
A novel surgical screw is presented as a polyaxial, multiaxial, or monoaxial screw. The polyaxial screw allows versatile angulation between a bone anchor section and a screw body and allows the surgeon to attach a rod to the invention in a top-loading manner and manipulate the rod to accommodate a patient's body and the surgical goals. The screw uses a rod saddle to seat a rod, and permits the surgeon to sagitally manipulate the rod. After implantation of the screw and insertion of the rod, a locking screw is used to fix the angle and position of the rod and …

Development And Implementation Of A Calibration Procedure For Complex Impedance Spectrum Measurements With Applications To Embedded Battery Health Monitoring And Management Systems, William H. Morrison
Development And Implementation Of A Calibration Procedure For Complex Impedance Spectrum Measurements With Applications To Embedded Battery Health Monitoring And Management Systems, William H. Morrison
Master's Theses
Energy storage devices such as rechargeable Lithium ion batteries are assuming an increasingly prominent role in society, covering applications from electric / hybrid electric vehicles to personal portable electronics. In response to this increasing demand, technologies that monitor battery health and remaining useful life have developed. One such system is the Smart Battery Status Monitor (SBSM), developed by the Idaho National Laboratory, Montana Tech and Qualtech Systems, Inc. The SBSM utilizes impedance spectrum measurements using a subsystem called the Impedance Measurement Box (IMB). The impedance measurements are complex quantities (having both a resistive and a reactive component) and are made …

Jewish Perspectives On Christian Privilege: A Consensual Qualitative Study, Robert Kinney
Jewish Perspectives On Christian Privilege: A Consensual Qualitative Study, Robert Kinney
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Although multicultural considerations, privilege, and oppression are of current interest across the field, much of the extant research has failed to explore religiosity as a component of the psychological literature. Using Consensual Qualitative Research (CQR) the authors set out to gain an understanding of Christian privilege and the impact it has on Jewish Identity. A sample of 12 adult, American, non-Orthodox Jews were interviewed using a semi-structured interview protocol. The interview data was collected to better understand the manifestations of Christian privilege and the impact of said issues on participant’s lives and identities. Seven themes were identified (1) Personal Conceptualization …

Gene Expression Analysis In Human Breast Cancer Associated Blood Vessels, Dt Jones, T Lechertier, R Mitter, Jmj Herbert, Et Al
Gene Expression Analysis In Human Breast Cancer Associated Blood Vessels, Dt Jones, T Lechertier, R Mitter, Jmj Herbert, Et Al
School of Biomedical Sciences
Angiogenesis is essential for solid tumour growth, whilst the molecular profiles of tumour blood vessels have been reported to be different between cancer types. Although presently available anti-angiogenic strategies are providing some promise for the treatment of some cancers it is perhaps not surprisingly that, none of the anti-angiogenic agents available work on all tumours. Thus, the discovery of novel anti-angiogenic targets, relevant to individual cancer types, is required. Using Affymetrix microarray analysis of laser-captured, CD31-positive blood vessels we have identified 63 genes that are upregulated significantly (5-72 fold) in angiogenic blood vessels associated with human invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) …
Babette's Feast And The Goodness Of God, Thomas J. Curry
Babette's Feast And The Goodness Of God, Thomas J. Curry
Journal of Religion & Film
This article attempts to answer the preeminent question Babette’s Feast invites viewers to consider: Why does Babette choose to expend everything she has to make her feast? Of the critical studies made of the film, few have considered analytically crucial the catastrophic backstory of Babette, the violence of which is implied and offscreen. Appreciation of the singularity of Babette’s own personhood and the darker aspects of her experience, and not only how she might act as a figure of Christ, are key to understanding the motivating force behind her meal and its transformative effect: That through the feast Babette lays …
Whale Rider: The Re-Enactment Of Myth And The Empowerment Of Women, Kevin V. Dodd
Whale Rider: The Re-Enactment Of Myth And The Empowerment Of Women, Kevin V. Dodd
Journal of Religion & Film
Whale Rider represents a particular type of mythic film that includes within it references to an ancient sacred story and is itself a contemporary recapitulation of it. The movie also belongs to a further subcategory of mythic cinema, using the double citation of the myth—in its original form and its re-enactment—to critique the subordinate position of women to men in the narrated world. To do this, the myth is extended beyond its traditional scope and context. After looking at how the movie embeds the story and recapitulates it, this paper examines the film’s reception. To consider the variety of positions …
The Reenchantment Of Eschatology: Religious Secular Apocalypse In Akira Kurosawa’S Dreams, Justin Heinzekehr
The Reenchantment Of Eschatology: Religious Secular Apocalypse In Akira Kurosawa’S Dreams, Justin Heinzekehr
Journal of Religion & Film
The possibility of nuclear destruction in the modern world has created a secular eschatology which, unlike religious eschatologies, creates nihilism and apathy rather than ultimate meaning. The Japanese film Dreams, by Akira Kurosawa, depicts this secularized eschatology as well as a counter-apocalyptic utopia. However, Kurosawa does not merely repeat the Western visions of nuclear apocalypse, but uses Japanese folk religion as a lens through which this apocalypse can be viewed. By doing so, Kurosawa creates a specifically Eastern response to nuclear destruction: a “religious secular” eschatology. Despite its lack of critical success, Dreams provides a valuable alternative for Western …

Plant-based oral vaccines are a promising emergent technology that could help alleviate disease burden worldwide by providing a low-cost, heat-stable, oral alternative to parenterally administered commercial vaccines. Here, we describe high-level accumulation of the hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) at a mean concentration of 0.51%TSP in maize T1 seeds using an improved version of the globulin1 promoter. This concentration is more than fourfold higher than any previously reported lines. HBsAg expressed in maize seeds was extremely heat stable, tolerating temperatures up to 55 °C for 1 month without degradation. Optimal heat stability was achieved after oil extraction of ground maize …

In Silico Analysis Reveals The Role Of Horizontally Transferred Genes (Hgts) In Shaping The Pathogenicity Of Xanthomonas, Shrabanti Kundu, Asim Bothra, Louis S. Tisa, Arnab Sen
Molecular, Cellular & Biomedical Sciences
The role of Xanthomonas spp. as phytopathogen has been well recognized in diseases of important crops like rice, canola, tomato, citrus, etc. The genomes of a number of Xanthomonas strains are also fully sequenced and they are made available in various data bases. In the present study, in silico analysis of six Xanthomonas genomes was carried out. Synonymous codon usage pattern study in these genomes revealed that pathogenicity related (PR)-horizontally transferred genes (HGTs) were, in general, expressed lowly and were less biased in comparison with average protein coding genes and ribosomal protein genes. Moreover, the correspondence analysis showed that the …

We Make The Spring Rolls, They Make Their Own Rules: Filipina Domestic Workers’ Fight For Labor Rights In New York City And Los Angeles, Ariella Rotramel
Gender, Sexuality, and Intersectionality Faculty Publications
This article provides a multidimensional examination of Filipina domestic workers’ efforts to promote workers’ rights nationally and globally. Through their own experiences as transnational workers, Filipina activists were able to translate their knowledge of labor dynamics into practical and effective tactics such as the demand for labor contracts as an industry standard. Combining ethnographic research and interviews conducted with New York– based Filipina domestic worker activists with primary and secondary sources from Los Angeles, recent advocacy work in New York is compared with efforts in Los Angeles and California more broadly. Key points of comparison—demographics and organizing histories, geography and …
