The reorganization of cranial cartilages during tadpole metamorphosis is a set of complex processes. The fates of larval cartilage-forming cells (chondrocytes) and sources of adult chondrocytes are largely unknown. Individual larval cranial cartilages may either degenerate or remodel, while many adult cartilages appear to form de novo during metamorphosis. Determining the extent to which adult chondrocytes/cartilages are derived from larval chondrocytes during metamorphosis requires new techniques in chondrocyte lineage tracing. We have developed two transgenic systems to label cartilage cells throughout the body with fluorescent proteins. One system strongly labels early tadpole cartilages only. The other system inducibly labels forming …

Computerizing Social-Emotional Assessment For School Readiness: First Steps Toward An Assessment Battery For Early Childhood Settings, Susanne A. Denham, Hideko H. Bassett, Katherine Zinsser
Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk
The transition into formal schooling is a crucial foundation that can set children on a cycle of success or failure in both academic and social domains. A child’s abilities to express healthy emotions, understand emotions of self and others, regulate emotion, attention, and behavior, make good decisions regarding social problems, and engage in a range of prosocial behaviors, all work together to promote a successful school experience.
However, many children have deficits in these skills by school entry, and educators lack the requisite tools to identify, track and assess skills these children need to learn. Thus, because social-emotional learning (SEL) …

Use Of Electronic Databases By Postgraduate Students And Research Scholars At Gbpuat Library, India, Tanveer Haider Naqvi
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The aim of this paper is to examine the impact and use of e-databases at GBPUAT library because a huge amount is invested for the subscription, growth, and management of e-databases. The main aim is to determine the purpose of use of e-databases; and to find out their level of use, level of satisfaction, problems, and instructions/help in accessing of e-databases. To collect research data, questionnaire was administered randomly among 250 registered postgraduate students and research scholars of GBPUAT and 143 filled in questionnaires were returned. Finally, the researcher selected 137 useable questionnaires for the analysis using statistical techniques to …

Assessment Of Qep Course Revision And New Course Grants, Fall 2008- Spring 2012, Anne Jumonville, Information Literacy Committee (Trinity University)
Information Literacy Documents
The results of Trinity University’s Information Literacy New Course/Revised Course Grant program reveal much about the success of the QEP overall. Faculty members from across the university designed courses at all levels (FY through graduate) with information literacy learning outcomes. Between fall 2008 and spring 2012, 42 new courses and 74 revised courses received grants (116 grants total). Over 50 individual faculty members completed 1 course grant during this period, while 18 faculty completed 2 grants, 8 completed 3 grants, and 1 completed 4.

Seizing Opportunity: A Special Invitation Collection, Michael Williams
Administrative Issues Journal
The AIJ editorial board constantly looks for ways to keep the journal professionally relevant. With this in mind, we approached Dr. Michael Williams, Associate Dean of the MBA Program for the School of Business and Technology at Thomas Edison State College, about writing an introduction to our 2012 conference theme, Seizing Opportunities. Dr. Williams is a scholar-practitioner who offers a unique philosophical insight into the import of seizing opportunities in our professional and personal lives. He was excited about exploring the theme for this issue through the lens of change as a nexus of opportunity. We hope you find this …

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
Background: Cryptic morphological variation in the Chiropteran genus Myotis limits the understanding of species boundaries and species richness within the genus. Several authors have suggested that it is likely there are unrecognized species-level lineages of Myotis in the Neotropics. This study provides an assessment of the diversity in New World Myotis by analyzing cytochrome-b gene variation from an expansive sample ranging throughout North, Central, and South America. We provide baseline genetic data for researchers investigating phylogeographic and phylogenetic patterns of Myotis in these regions, with an emphasis on South America.
Methodology and Principal Findings: Cytochrome-b sequences were generated and …

When Less Is More: Evolutionary Origins Of The Affect Heuristic, Jerald D. Kralik, Eric R. Xu, Emily J. Knight, Sara A. Khan, William J. Levine
Dartmouth Scholarship
The human mind is built for approximations. When considering the value of a large aggregate of different items, for example, we typically do not summate the many individual values. Instead, we appear to form an immediate impression of the likeability of the option based on the average quality of the full collection, which is easier to evaluate and remember. While useful in many situations, this affect heuristic can lead to apparently irrational decision-making. For example, studies have shown that people are willing to pay more for a small set of high-quality goods than for the same set of high-quality goods …

Visual And Electronic Evaluations Of Detached Strawberry Leaves Inoculated With Colletotrichum Species, M. A. Miller-Butler, K. J. Curry, B. R. Kreiser, B. J. Smith

Inoculation of detached strawberry leaves with Colletotrichum species may provide an accurate, rapid, non-destructive method of identifying anthracnose resistant germplasm. Two assessments of anthracnose disease severity were compared on detached strawberry leaves inoculated with Colletotrichum fragariae and C. gloeosporioides: a quantitative assessment made via computer-based image analysis and a visual assessment made by two independent raters. The image analysis provided a precise measurement of percent lesion area of infected leaves. There was a strong positive correlation between percent lesion area and the visual disease scores of the raters.
