Declaring Disaster, Jamison E. Colburn Oct 2012

Declaring Disaster, Jamison E. Colburn

Texas Wesleyan Journal of Real Property Law

The major federal lands laws, the National Environmental Policy Act ("NEPA"), the Endangered Species Act ("ESA"), the Federal Advisory Committee Act ("FACA"), and the traditional principles of administrative law have all combined to set a status quo with which public lands lawyers and conservationists are familiar. But wildfire has just as surely made each of our four compass points into its own special sort of paradox and is now undermining the very norms that defined this field. Whatever happens next, fire is one force among several poised to remake public lands law into a wholly unprecedented collection of institutional and …

Simultaneous Measurement And Modulation Of Multiple Physiological Parameters In The Isolated Heart Using Optical Techniques, Leslie M. Loew, Ping Yan Oct 2012

Simultaneous Measurement And Modulation Of Multiple Physiological Parameters In The Isolated Heart Using Optical Techniques, Leslie M. Loew, Ping Yan

UCHC Articles - Research

Whole-heart multi-parametric optical mapping has provided valuable insight into the interplay of electro-physiological parameters, and this technology will continue to thrive as dyes are improved and technical solutions for imaging become simpler and cheaper. Here, we show the advantage of using improved 2nd-generation voltage dyes, provide a simple solution to panoramic multi-parametric mapping, and illustrate the application of flash photolysis of caged compounds for studies in the whole heart. For proof of principle, we used the isolated rat whole-heart model. After characterising the blue and green isosbestic points of di-4-ANBDQBS and di-4-ANBDQPQ, respectively, two voltage and calcium mapping systems are …

Passive Dispositions: On The Relationship Between Πάθος And ῎Ἕξις In Aristotle, Marjolein Oele Oct 2012

Passive Dispositions: On The Relationship Between Πάθος And ῎Ἕξις In Aristotle, Marjolein Oele

Philosophy

In many studies of Aristotle it is taken for granted that there is a relationship between the affections (pathē) and the dispositions (hexeis) with which they are associated, but how the process of passively reacting to particular circumstances (i.e. the event of a mere pathos) can turn into and generate a particular moral disposition to be affected is not explained. This paper seeks to offer a systematic exploration of the constitutive relationship between pathos and passive moral dispositions.

Appealing to Categories 8, we argue that two forms of qualitative change underlie the alteration from pathos …

A Sketch Of The Affective Classroom: Abject Art, Patrick Kinsman Oct 2012

A Sketch Of The Affective Classroom: Abject Art, Patrick Kinsman

Mid-America College Art Association Conference 2012 Digital Publications

Abject art is highly affective, meaning that it generates strong sensations and feelings in viewers. In a classroom, high affect art demands that these reactions be integrated into the relationships between instructor, students and artwork. The affective classroom is then a classroom which summons high affects and walks a careful line between non-dialogic "shock" and a group therapy session, in order to understand affective relationships as proper material for learning. Affect is interactive and communicative by definition, but is unpredictable and uneven. Using my 2012 seminar in Abject Art, I outline the development and experience of teaching a semester of …

Perception Of Space In Topological Forms, Dincer Savaskan Oct 2012

Perception Of Space In Topological Forms, Dincer Savaskan

Architecture Thesis Prep

"With recent development of computer technologies there has been change in our notion of materiality. We can define our age as flow of information and architecture capture this flow and creates more complex conceptions and interactions through the space. Recent researches on materialism, typological forms, field gradients and diagramming define a new methodology in design approach, which can respond the dynamism and flow. However architectural form is still inseparable from the way we experience the world, which involves our senses and perceptions. It is possible to adopt cinematic techniques of collage and sequencing in computer-generated forms to create continuous references …

Sourcing Scarcity, Muneerah Alrabe Oct 2012

Sourcing Scarcity, Muneerah Alrabe

Architecture Thesis Prep

"Water is an essential element to human development and urban vitality. As a response to future oil depletion in cities, a new appearance of water emerges in cities: Hydro-urbanism. Through rethinking the potential of water infrastructure in cities, HydroUrbanism situates itself as a spectacular functional event that aims to collect, purify, store, and generate energy within a city. The project reconsiders the production process of water on the periphery of the city and hypothesizes for an integrated process of the production of water to work within the city at an urban scale. Exposing the water infrastructure, fantasizing water, and re-connecting …

Re-Thinking The Green Belt: Sustainability And Development In Growing Cities, Maria Saavedra Oct 2012

Re-Thinking The Green Belt: Sustainability And Development In Growing Cities, Maria Saavedra

Architecture Thesis Prep

"One of the major goals of this research is to study the relationship between nature and technology as urban generators. I agree with Lisa Tilder and Beth Bostein, who state that instead of using architectural technology to return nature to some impossible, pre-human pristine state, we should consider fully employing the power of architecture to produce new forms of nature. Instead of thinking about the River’s edge as a natural and physical barrier between the water and the city, we should consider it as an opportunity to challenge the image of nature, exploring how it limits or furthers our social …
