Pedaling Poverty Through Pennies, Dimes, And Disaster, Nicholas D. Hartlep Oct 2012

Pedaling Poverty Through Pennies, Dimes, And Disaster, Nicholas D. Hartlep

NERA Conference Proceedings 2012

This paper synthesizes and categorizes important social justice scholarship into a useable taxonomy that social justice workers can use in their personal and professional spheres of influence. The present paper discusses the idea that although social justice activities and/or projects may originate with noteworthy missions and motivations, unless their creators are vigilant, service projects have the potential to deteriorate into myth-making initiatives that reinforce the problems that they originally intended to ameliorate.

Multidisciplinary Research: Science And Reading Instruction In Third Grade, Margaret Lally Queenan

NERA Conference Proceedings 2012

This participant observer research study focused on the reading comprehension strategies third grade readers used when reading downloaded texts about cheetahs and online texts about tigers. State standards and the district’s curriculum called for third grade students to identify the structures and behaviors that help animals survive in different environments. Using participant observation; that is, teaching the third grade classes and analyzing the artifacts produced as a result, including student products such as online and offline notes and researcher products such as lesson plans and field notes, the researcher asked and answered: What are the challenges and benefits of applying …

The Egyptian Fruit Bat Rousettus Aegyptiacus (Chiroptera: Pteropodidae) In The Palaearctic: Geographical Variation And Taxonomic Status, Petr Benda, Peter Vallo, Pavel Hulva

KIP Articles

Two metrically defined subspecies have traditionally been recognised within the Palaearctic distribution range of the Egyptian fruit bat Rousettus aegyptiacus; the larger R. a. aegyptiacus in Egypt and the northern part of the Middle East and the smaller R. a. arabicus in the southern Middle East. An extensive material of R. aegyptiacus from all parts of this area, i.e. the Levant (incl. Turkey and Cyprus), Egypt (incl. Sinai), northern Sudan, Yemen, Oman, Iran, and Pakistan, as well as comparative samples from its sub-Saharan range, were tested using both morphological and genetic approaches in order to revise the species’ taxonomic status. …

Thermodynamic Kinetics And Efficiency Analysis Of Methyl Viologen, Chang Chen Oct 2012

Thermodynamic Kinetics And Efficiency Analysis Of Methyl Viologen, Chang Chen

Theses and Dissertations

Methyl Viologen (MV) is an electron mediator that has great possibilities to be used with an electrode system in which the electrode system provides electrons towards reducing MV species. MV has three redox states and they can be converted to each other via redox reactions on the surface of the electrode. The concentration of the three species of MV was related to the voltage potential applied to the system through a thermodynamic model. With the thermodynamic model the concentration of the three species can be predicted with different applied voltage potentials towards providing guidance for controlling the redox state of …

Étude Histologique In Vivo De La Réaction Du Tissu Pulpaire Après Coiffage Pulpaire Direct Avec Le Ciment De Portland Modifié, Toni Sarkis, Issam Khalil, Alfred Naaman

International Arab Journal of Dentistry

Capping an exposed pulp in order to maintain the vitality of the pulp is the main purpose of pulp capping procedure. The success of this procedure depends on the capacity of pulp capping agent to stimulate pulp tissue repair and dentin bridge formation. Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) is a biocompatible agent that allows growth, proliferation and differentiation of mesenchymal cells in the pulp. Despite its many advantages, the handling of the MTA and its long setting time (4 hours) oblige the clinician to postpone the restoration to another day. A new product, called CPM (ciment de Portland modifié), has been …

Cloning, Ligand-Binding, And Temporal Expression Of Ecdysteroid Receptors In The Diamondback Moth, Plutella Xylostella, Baozhen Tang, Wei Dong, Pei Liang, Xuguo Zhou, Xiwu Gao

Entomology Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: The diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), is a devastating pest of cruciferous crops worldwide, and has developed resistance to a wide range of insecticides, including diacylhydrazine-based ecdysone agonists, a highly selective group of molt-accelerating biopesticides targeting the ecdysone receptors.

RESULT: In this study, we cloned and characterized the ecdysone receptors from P. xylostella, including the two isoforms of EcR and a USP. Sequence comparison and phylogenetic analysis showed striking conservations among insect ecdysone receptors, especially between P. xylostella and other lepidopterans. The binding affinity of ecdysteroids to in vitro-translated receptor proteins indicated that PxEcRB isoform bound specifically …

The Good, The Bad, And The Bluths: Arrested Development As A Modern Allegory, Thomas Felty

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

Allegroies are often seen as an archiac form of narrative expression. Yet the the basic concepts about human morality remain universal sources of artistic inspiratiojn thousands of years later. This piece gives a brief history of allegorical storytelling from the Middle Ages up through the Twentienth Century focusing on the Seven Deadly Sins. The second half of the piece gives an in depth analysis of the television program, Arrested Development, assigning each character a feature found with the Seven Deadly Sins often found in traditonal allegorical storytelling. The piece concludes with an explanation of why such methods are still …

Role Of Soluble Adenylyl Cyclase In Neuronal Survival And Regeneration, Raul G. Corredor Oct 2012

Role Of Soluble Adenylyl Cyclase In Neuronal Survival And Regeneration, Raul G. Corredor

Open Access Dissertations

Retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) as well as other CNS neurons do not regenerate after injury and die soon after. While significant progress has been made in understanding the molecular basis for this lack of regenerative ability, this knowledge has not been enough to generate effective therapeutic strategies to promote axonal regeneration or prevent cell death after injury. Multiple signaling pathways are involved in neuronal survival and growth, but particular importance has been attributed to the role of the cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) pathway and electrical activity in modulating these processes. cAMP works with other signaling pathways, growth factors, and electrical …

Severe Stress Switches Crf Action In The Nucleus Accumbens From Appetitive To Aversive., Julia C Lemos, Matthew J Wanat, Jeffrey S Smith, Beverly A S Reyes, Nick G Hollon, Elisabeth J Van Bockstaele, Charles Chavkin, Paul E M Phillips

Farber Institute for Neuroscience Faculty Papers

Stressors motivate an array of adaptive responses ranging from 'fight or flight' to an internal urgency signal facilitating long-term goals. However, traumatic or chronic uncontrollable stress promotes the onset of major depressive disorder, in which acute stressors lose their motivational properties and are perceived as insurmountable impediments. Consequently, stress-induced depression is a debilitating human condition characterized by an affective shift from engagement of the environment to withdrawal. An emerging neurobiological substrate of depression and associated pathology is the nucleus accumbens, a region with the capacity to mediate a diverse range of stress responses by interfacing limbic, cognitive and motor circuitry. …

Amelioration Of Root Disease Of Subterranean Clover (Trifolium Subterraneum) By Mineral Nutrients, Tim Scanlon, Tiernan A. O’Rourke, Megan H. Ryan, Martin J. Barbetti, Krishnapillai Sivasithamparam

Journal articles

Subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum) is a key pasture legume across southern Australia and elsewhere. Decline in subterranean clover pastures was first recognised in Australia during the 1960s and manifests as an increase in weeds and a decrease in desirable legume species. While both root disease and poor nutrition contribute to subterranean clover pasture decline, the relationships between root disease and nutrition have not been determined. The objective of this study was to define these relationships. Field experiments were undertaken to determine the nutritional and pathogen status of soils and subterranean clover from three Western Australian field sites. Subsequently, …

Toxicology and Cancer Biology Faculty Publications

Angiogenesis is a crucial step in the growth and metastasis of cancers, since it enables the growing tumor to receive oxygen and nutrients. Cancer prevention using natural products has become an integral part of cancer control. We studied the antiangiogenic activity of quercetin using ex vivo, in vivo and in vitro models. Rat aortic ring assay showed that quercetin at non-toxic concentrations significantly inhibited microvessel sprouting and exhibited a significant inhibition in the proliferation, migration, invasion and tube formation of endothelial cells, which are key events in the process of angiogenesis. Most importantly, quercetin treatment inhibited ex vivo angiogenesis …

Mcdaniel Slough Wetland Restoration Staff Recommendation, Coastal Conservancy

Project Documents

The McDaniel Slough Wetland Restoration Project restored tidal flow and fish passage to 280 acres of former salt marsh wetlands and enhanced associated wildlife habitat. The project removed barriers to anadromous fish, restored tidal influence, deepened historic slough channels, partially removed failing or obsolete levees, and constructed levees to protect adjacent property.. This project improved connectivity by connecting more than 1,300 acres of local, state and federally protected lands along Humboldt Bay. This document summarizes the Coastal Conservancy's Staff Recommendation and authorization to provide funding for the implementation of the project.

With Religious Liberty For All: A Defense Of The Affordable Care Act's Contraception Coverage Mandate, Frederick Mark Gedicks Oct 2012

With Religious Liberty For All: A Defense Of The Affordable Care Act's Contraception Coverage Mandate, Frederick Mark Gedicks

Faculty Scholarship

The “contraception mandate” of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 poses a straightforward question for religious liberty jurisprudence: Must government excuse a believer from complying with a religiously burdensome law, when doing so would violate the liberty of others by imposing on them the costs and consequences of religious beliefs that they do not share? To ask this question is to answer it: One's religious liberty does not include the right to interfere with the liberty of others, and thus religious liberty may not be used by a religious employer to force employees to pay the costs …

The Invisibility Of Jurisdictional Procedure And Its Consequences, Justin R. Pidot Oct 2012

The Invisibility Of Jurisdictional Procedure And Its Consequences, Justin R. Pidot

Florida Law Review

Modern standing doctrine has been the subject of substantial scholarly inquiry. Critics charge that it allows judges to resolve cases based on their own ideologies, favoring corporations over individuals and those who harm over those harmed. The doctrine likewise disserves social justice, preventing adjudication of indisputably meritorious claims. Yet the focus on the substance of standing doctrine has obscured an equally significant impediment to justice created by the procedures that judges use to adjudicate questions of standing and subject matter jurisdiction generally. The unusual dimensions of jurisdictional procedure have largely escaped notice. This Essay interrogates the history and context of …

The Effects Of Owl Decoys And Non-Threatening Objects On Bird Feeding Behavior, Leah J. Rensel, Jannell D. Wilder Oct 2012

The Effects Of Owl Decoys And Non-Threatening Objects On Bird Feeding Behavior, Leah J. Rensel, Jannell D. Wilder

Quercus: Linfield Journal of Undergraduate Research

As traditional agricultural practices change, the scarecrow has also been renovated and modernized to include mock natural predators, such as owls, hawks, and falcons instead of comical human representations. These facsimiles represent an excellent opportunity to examine anti-predatory tactics and vigilance behavior in birds as a response to perceived threats. In this study, we tested songbird reaction to an owl decoy that mimicked the presence of a predator and to a non-threatening object placed in an oak woodland within Oregon’s Willamette Valley. Frequency of bird visitations to bird feeders when either a plastic owl or a cardboard box of similar …
