Charitable Organizations And Commercial Activity: A New Era - Will The Social Entrepreneurship Movement Force Change?, Jaclyn Cherry Oct 2012

Charitable Organizations And Commercial Activity: A New Era - Will The Social Entrepreneurship Movement Force Change?, Jaclyn Cherry

The Journal of Business, Entrepreneurship & the Law

It is no longer a new trend for charitable organizations to become involved in commercial activities. Thousands of nonprofit organizations have embraced the social entrepreneurial concept and have either created “commercial” type ventures as part of their nonprofits, have created spin-off organizations or subsidiary organizations, or have moved into the new area of hybrid organizations. Because there are no clear rules or guidelines for dealing with this issue, the third sector finds itself with rogue components and a spin-off group of hybrid organizations being loosely termed “social entrepreneurs.” Though these groups have grown in numbers in recent years, they have …

California's Flexible Purpose Corporation: A Step Forward, A Step Back, Or No Step At All?, Christen Clarke

The Journal of Business, Entrepreneurship & the Law

The roads of social welfare and commercial enterprise have come to an intersection in recent years. Laws governing corporations are expanding to make room for new forms of business entities that seek to satisfy both social and financial goals. The two most prominent “hybrid” business forms are the Low-Profit Limited Liability Company and the Benefit Corporation. The newest hybrid entity to take effect is the Flexible Purpose Corporation, which was introduced in California at the beginning of 2012. With the existence of hybrid organizations that already fit into the mold of Corporations and Limited Liability Companies, is there really a …

Characterization And Validation Of Preclinical Models Of Kshv-Induced Malignancies To Elucidate Antineoplastic And Antiviral Therapeutic Approaches, Brittany M. Ashlock

Kaposi’s sarcoma (KS) and Primary effusion lymphoma (PEL) are two Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV/HHV-8) –induced cancers that are clinically challenging to treat and often have poor prognoses. While these diseases have declined dramatically in the developed world, they are responsible for significant morbidity and mortality in the developing world. Further, current treatments are often associated with considerable toxicity. While KS and PEL are composed of cells harboring KSHV in the latent state, the paracrine hypothesis of tumor development proposes that the tumor is actually being driven by the minority of cells undergoing lytic replication. Therefore, it is believed that potential …

Construct-Validity Of The Engagement With Challenge Measure For Adolescents: Structural- And Criterion-Validity Evidence, E. Whitney G. Moore, David Hansen Oct 2012

Construct-Validity Of The Engagement With Challenge Measure For Adolescents: Structural- And Criterion-Validity Evidence, E. Whitney G. Moore, David Hansen

Kinesiology, Health and Sport Studies

For adolescents, engaging with challenge is a key developmental task, hypothesized to support development of adult-like competencies (e.g., agency and self-direction; Larson, 2000). This study aimed to assess the construct-validity (structural- and concurrent-validity) of a new self-report measure assessing adolescents’ engagement with challenge to help researchers understand how different settings and the conditions in these settings support adolescents’ development. The sample consisted of 337 adolescents in 10 FFA programs along with the adult advisors in each program. Adolescents completed a questionnaire, which included the Engagement with Challenge measure and the following criterion variables: number of contests completed, participation frequency, and …

Careers Boundaries In The Arts In Brazil: An Exploratory Study, Pedro F. Bendassolli, Thomaz Wood Jr. Oct 2012

Careers Boundaries In The Arts In Brazil: An Exploratory Study, Pedro F. Bendassolli, Thomaz Wood Jr.

The Qualitative Report

Over the last years the scholarly literature on careers has been enriched by the proposal of new career models which present a rhetoric that asks for the end of career boundaries: individual, hierarchical, organizational and geographical. However, in the real world, many constrains continue to exist. This paper tries to contribute to the understanding of the new boundaries of the 21st century careers. To do so we look at the case of careers in the arts. We review existing literature on careers, present a historical, contextual perspective of artistic careers, and conduct field work in the city of São Paulo …

Effect Of Axonal Micro-Tubules On The Morphology Of Retinal Nerve Fibers Studied By Second-Harmonic Generation, Hyungsik Lim, John Danias Oct 2012

Effect Of Axonal Micro-Tubules On The Morphology Of Retinal Nerve Fibers Studied By Second-Harmonic Generation, Hyungsik Lim, John Danias

Publications and Research

Abstract. Many studies suggest that the degradation of microtubules in the retinal ganglion cells may be an early event in the progression of glaucoma. Because reflectance and birefringence of the retinal nerve fibers arise primarily from microtubules, the optical properties have been intensively studied for early detection of the disease. We previously reported a novel nonlinear optical signal from axonal microtubules for visualizing the retinal nerve fibers, namely second-harmonic generation (SHG). We demonstrate the use of axonal SHG to investigate the effect of microtubules on the morphology of the retinal nerve fiber bundles. Time-lapse SHG imaging of ex vivo rat …

Palpable, John Archer

Theses

To provoke intrigue using simplified, whimsical, playful (toy-like) forms with recycled materials that convey complex, possibly dark, relationships to foster a curiosity of innocence lost and deliver a deeper meaning (Archer, 2012). To me life is an exercise in exploring the human condition; specifically relationships. From the day we arrive we establish relationships with everything in our world, even before we arrive, if we count the ten months of uterine swimming. The sights, sounds, and touch of lights, voices, and caress all play a part in our connection to the world. My thesis work focuses on the connections among interpersonal …

Frbr, Facets And The Discoverability Of Moving Image Materials In Libraries, Kelley Mcgrath

OLAC Conferences

This session will look at how the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) model could be used to improve access to film and video. There will be a demonstration of a prototype end-user discovery interface (http:// blazing-sunset-24.heroku.com/) sponsored by OLAC and a discussion of a project using the XC Metadata Services Toolkit (http://www.extensiblecatalog.org/) to mine existing MARC data to populate this sort of interface. Participants will be asked to provide feedback and suggest future directions for this project.

I'Ll Never See The Stars Again, Office Of Arts + Cultural Programming, Peak Performances At Montclair State University

2012-2013 Exceptions Rule: No Compromise

Six singers and five instrumentalists tell the story of a group of Italian refugees in a series of vignettes expressing the comedy of love and the despair of betrayal. The musicians of ARTEK have built a reputation for the vitality of their spirited performances of baroque music. In I’ll Never See the Stars Again, the lush music of Claudio Monteverdi and his contemporaries is re-imagined as a theater piece staged by Martin Platt, founding artistic director of the Alabama Shakespeare Festival. In an extremely entertaining fashion, ARTEK proves the journey is just as important as the destination.

The Voice In The Whirlwind: Lessons For Job -- Randomness And Natural Evil, Richard Carlson

Conference on Philosophy and Theology

The innocent Job suffers, friends are no help, and then Job screams at Yahweh, demanding justice. The first surprise is that Yehweh responds to Job, does not criticize him but tells him he is ignorant, and then gives him a science lesson. The content of that lesson is the second surprise.
