Priority Effects Among Young-Of-The-Year Fish: Reduced Growth Of Bluegill Sunfish (Lepomis Macrochirus) Caused By Yellow Perch (Perca Flavescens)?, Mark A. Kaemingk, Jeffrey C. Jolley, David W. Willis, Steven R. Chipps

Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications

1. When available, Daphnia spp. are often preferred by age-0 yellow perch and bluegill sunfish because of energetic profitability. We hypothesised that predation by age-0 yellow perch could lead to a midsummer decline (MSD) of Daphnia spp. and that priority effects may favour yellow perch because they hatch before bluegill, allowing them to capitalise on Daphnia spp. prior to bluegill emergence. 2. Data were collected from 2004 to 2010 in Pelican Lake, Nebraska, U.S.A. The lake experienced a prolonged MSD in all but 1 year (2005), generally occurring within the first 2 weeks of June except in 2008 and 2010 …

Initial Observations On The Inclusion Of High Protein Distillers Dried Grain Into Rainbow Trout Diets, Michael E. Barnes, Michael L. Brown, Kurt A. Rosentrater

Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications

An initial investigation into the inclusion of high protein distillers dried grain with solubles (HPDDG) in juvenile rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss diets was conducted during a 36-day feeding trial. Four experimental diets containing either 10% or 20% HPDDG with supplemental amino acids, and either with or without phytase, were compared to a fish-meal-based, non-HPDDG, diet. There was no significant difference among any of the diets in total weight gain, percent weight gain, feed conversion ratio, or percent mortality. There was also no significant difference in length, weight, condition factor, hepatosomatic index, viscerosomatic index, or any fish health parameter in fishes …

An Initial Investigation Replacing Fish Meal With A Commercial Fermented Soybean Meal Product In The Diets Of Juvenile Rainbow Trout, Michael E. Barnes, Michael L. Brown, Kurt A. Rosen, Jason R. Sewell

Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications

The inclusion of PepSoyGen (PSG), a commercially-available fermented soybean meal product, was evaluated with juvenile rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss in an initial 70-day feeding trial, with a supplemental trial involving a subset of the experimental diets continuing for an additional 40 d. Six diets containing 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, or 50% PSG, with the PSG directly replacing fish meal, were used in the first trial. There were no significant differences in weight gain or feed conversion ratio between the fish meal-based control diet and diets containing up to 30% PSG. However, weight gain was significantly reduced and feed conversion …

Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications

Distillers dried grain with solubles (DDGS) was evaluated in juvenile Shasta-strain rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss diets during a 36-day feeding trial. Two experimental diets containing either 10% or 20% DDGS with supplemented amino acids (lysine, methionine, isoleucine, and histidine) and phytase were compared to a fish meal-only control diet. Tanks of trout receiving diets containing either concentration of DDGS weighed significantly less at the end of the trial and had significantly poorer feed conversion ratios than tanks of fish being fed the fish mealonly control. There was no significant difference in individual fish length, weight, condition factor, or any fish …

Tracking Release Of Reservoir Sediment Contaminated By Heavy Metal Mining Waste: A Study Of Large-Scale Dam Removal At Milltown, Montana, Katrina Louise Garcia Jan 2012

Tracking Release Of Reservoir Sediment Contaminated By Heavy Metal Mining Waste: A Study Of Large-Scale Dam Removal At Milltown, Montana, Katrina Louise Garcia

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The removal of Milltown Dam at the confluence of the Clark Fork and Blackfoot rivers, near Missoula, Montana, caused an elevation in heavy metals concentration in downstream sediment. The primary source of contamination came from base metal extraction mining waste which had collected in reservoir sediments for more than a century. Health and environmental concerns associated with high concentrations of arsenic and copper in the sediment and nearby groundwater prompted the removal of the dam and its toxic sediments. Milltown Dam was breached on March 28, 2008. Fine-grain (<63 µm) bed sediment was collected between May 3 and August 21, 2008, over a 254-km stretch in the Clark Fork River downstream of the dam and analyzed for concentrations of heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, Zn and Hg). The highest metals concentration occurred in early May, before the peak in stream discharge began transporting massive amounts of sediment. Metals concentration peaked at 290 ppm As, 8 ppm Cd, 2200 ppm Cu, 180 ppm Pb, 2400 ppm Zn, and 2 ppm Hg. Dam removal did not affect Cr, but the other metals were enriched well above background conditions: As was 42x higher and Cu was 103x higher in the lower CFR than its tributaries. Elevated metals concentration extended over the entire study area, decreasing exponentially with distance downstream and returning to near pre-breach conditions by the end of the study period. Supplemental data from the USGS for suspended-sediment was combined with bed sediment results to track the source, sequence and transport mechanisms of sediment release. Contaminants in the sediment acted as tracers, showing that heavily contaminated, fine-grain sediment was translated downstream immediately after dam removal, then nearly two months later the bulk of the sediment was rapidly dispersed during maximum stream discharge and diluted by uncontaminated bank sediment.

Feet That Don't Touch The Floor: Perceptions In Marketing Theatre For Young Audiences, Melora Slotnick Jan 2012

Feet That Don't Touch The Floor: Perceptions In Marketing Theatre For Young Audiences, Melora Slotnick

Theses and Dissertations

It was once my dream to build the theatre of the future: to develop a new organization in the theatre community that would provide new ideas and imaginative learning. Reality and research, however, have pointed me in a new direction. From my perspective, we do not currently need another organization to add competition within our theatrical community. Though it is often appealing to start from scratch, what we need most now is to enhance our status and quality. Existing theatres must work toward a balance of competition and collaboration. Disparity is not the issue. Countless theatres in our nation and …

Cowboy Mythology In National Politics: The Pre-Presidential Political Career Of Lyndon Johnson, Alyson Bujnoski Jan 2012

Cowboy Mythology In National Politics: The Pre-Presidential Political Career Of Lyndon Johnson, Alyson Bujnoski

Senior Independent Study Theses

Lyndon Johnson represents an important shift in politics towards a strategy involving the conscious manipulation of imagery to achieve both local, statewide, and national electoral appeal. Most historians argue that Johnson's conscious and overt manipulation of cowboy and western mythology began after his election to the Senate in November of 1948. Using a close analysis of Johnson's pre-Presidential speeches, this work explores the ways in which Johnson began to manipulate frontier myth as early as in his election to the House of Representatives in 1937.

Cardioprotection Of Controlled And Cardiac-Specific Over-Expression Of A(2a)-Adenosine Receptor In The Pressure Overload., Eman A Hamad, Weizhong Zhu, Tung O Chan, Valerie Myers, Erhe Gao, Xue Li, Jin Zhang, Jianliang Song, Xue-Qian Zhang, Joseph Y Cheung, Walter Koch, Arthur M Feldman Jan 2012

Cardioprotection Of Controlled And Cardiac-Specific Over-Expression Of A(2a)-Adenosine Receptor In The Pressure Overload., Eman A Hamad, Weizhong Zhu, Tung O Chan, Valerie Myers, Erhe Gao, Xue Li, Jin Zhang, Jianliang Song, Xue-Qian Zhang, Joseph Y Cheung, Walter Koch, Arthur M Feldman

Center for Translational Medicine Faculty Papers

Adenosine binds to three G protein-coupled receptors (R) located on the cardiomyocyte (A(1)-R, A(2A)-R and A(3)-R) and provides cardiac protection during both ischemic and load-induced stress. While the role of adenosine receptor-subtypes has been well defined in the setting of ischemia-reperfusion, far less is known regarding their roles in protecting the heart during other forms of cardiac stress. Because of its ability to increase cardiac contractility and heart rate, we hypothesized that enhanced signaling through A(2A)-R would protect the heart during the stress of transverse aortic constriction (TAC). Using a cardiac-specific and inducible promoter, we selectively over-expressed A(2A)-R in FVB …

Orphan Nuclear Receptor Nur77 Regulates Androgen Receptor Gene Expression In Mouse Ovary., Anyi Dai, Guijun Yan, Qinyuan He, Yue Jiang, Qun Zhang, Ting Fang, Lijun Ding, Jianxin Sun, Haixiang Sun, Yali Hu

Center for Translational Medicine Faculty Papers

The androgen receptor (AR) is a nuclear receptor that is expressed in growing follicles and involved in folliculogenesis and follicle growth. The orphan nuclear receptor, Nur77, also has an important role in steroid signaling and follicle maturation. We hypothesized that AR levels and androgen signaling through AR are regulated by Nur77 in the ovary. In the ovaries of Nur77 knockout mice (n = 5), real-time PCR results showed that the mRNA levels of AR and an androgen signaling target gene, Kitl, were decreased by 35% and 24%, respectively, relative to wild-type mice (n = 5), which suggested transcriptional regulation of …

Microrna-145 Protects Cardiomyocytes Against Hydrogen Peroxide (H₂O₂)-Induced Apoptosis Through Targeting The Mitochondria Apoptotic Pathway., Ruotian Li, Guijun Yan, Qiaoling Li, Haixiang Sun, Yali Hu, Jianxin Sun, Biao Xu Jan 2012

Microrna-145 Protects Cardiomyocytes Against Hydrogen Peroxide (H₂O₂)-Induced Apoptosis Through Targeting The Mitochondria Apoptotic Pathway., Ruotian Li, Guijun Yan, Qiaoling Li, Haixiang Sun, Yali Hu, Jianxin Sun, Biao Xu

Center for Translational Medicine Faculty Papers

MicroRNAs, a class of small and non-encoding RNAs that transcriptionally or post-transcriptionally modulate the expression of their target genes, has been implicated as critical regulatory molecules in many cardiovascular diseases, including ischemia/reperfusion induced cardiac injury. Here, we report microRNA-145, a tumor suppressor miRNA, can protect cardiomyocytes from hydrogen peroxide H₂O₂-induced apoptosis through targeting the mitochondrial pathway. Quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) demonstrated that the expression of miR-145 in either ischemia/reperfused mice myocardial tissues or H₂O₂-treated neonatal rat ventricle myocytes (NRVMs) was markedly down-regulated. Over-expression of miR-145 significantly inhibited the H₂O₂-induced cellular apoptosis, ROS production, mitochondrial structure disruption as well as the …

Public Perceptions Of Wildlife-Associated Disease: Risk Communication Matters, Daniel J. Decker, William F. Siemer, Darrick T. N. Evenson, Richard C. Stedman, Katherine A. Mccomas, Margaret A. Wild, Kevin T. Castle, Kirsten M. Leong

Human–Wildlife Interactions

Wildlife professionals working at the interface where conflicts arise between people and wild animals have an exceptional responsibility in the long-term interest of sustaining society’s support for wildlife and its conservation by resolving human–wildlife conflicts so that people continue to view wildlife as a valued resource. The challenge of understanding and responding to people’s concerns about wildlife is particularly acute in situations involving wildlife-associated disease and may be addressed through One Health communication. Two important questions arise in this work: (1) how will people react to the message that human health and wildlife health are linked?; and (2) will wildlife-associated …

Procedurally Generating Everything, Micah Caunter

Senior Independent Study Theses

This paper investigates using Perlin Noise in a three-dimensional environment. Perlin Noise has been previously used to simulate clouds, marble, wood, and other natural phenomena as well as to model virtual landscapes. The simulation created for the I.S. procedurally generates both static and animated textures and models virtual landscapes to create a virtual world. In order to keep up with the rapidly advancing graphics industry, the OpenGL API is utilized to generate the textures in real-time and to display the final product.

Stratigraphy And Paleoenvironments Of The Soeginina Beds (Paadla Formation, Lower Ludlow, Upper Silurian) On Saaremaa Island, Estonia, Richa N. Ekka

Senior Independent Study Theses

The Soeginina Beds in the Paadla Formation on the island of Saaremaa, western Estonia, are a lower Ludlow (Upper Silurian) sequence of dolostones, marls, and stromatolites. They represent rocks just above the Wenlock/Ludlow boundary, which is distinguished by a major disconformity that can be correlated to a regional regression on the paleocontinent of Baltica. The depositional environments of the Soeginina Beds include a shelfal environment, restricted shallow marine setting, intertidal mudflat and finally a hypersaline supratidal setting. The evidence includes halite crystal molds, oscillation ripples, eurypterid fragments, stromatolites, ostracods, gastropods, Chondrites trace fossils, intraclasts and oncoids. Nautiloid conchs are common, …

Reading The Standing Tea Leaves In American Electric Power Co. V. Connecticut, Bradford C. Mank Jan 2012

Reading The Standing Tea Leaves In American Electric Power Co. V. Connecticut, Bradford C. Mank

University of Richmond Law Review

The U.S. Supreme Court by an equally divided vote offour to four affirmed the Second Circuit's decision finding standing and jurisdiction in the case in American Electric Power Co. v. Connecticut. While not binding as precedent beyond the Second Circuit, the case offers clues to how the Court is likely to rule in future standing cases. This article discusses the likely identities of the four Justices on each side of the standing issue in the case, as well as how Justice Sotomayor might have voted if she had not recused herself. Furthermore, the article examines how the decision expand- ed on …

Russian Spirituality And The Theology Of Negation, Mikhail Epstein Jan 2012

Russian Spirituality And The Theology Of Negation, Mikhail Epstein

Russian Culture

Toward the end of the twentieth century Russian culture found itself at a crossroads which cannot be ascribed to any political election but which rather presupposed a radical change in its religious and social orientation. Two somewhat opposing theses will be developed in this article. First I will discuss the processes of secularization in Russian culture and the necessity of a third, neutral zone between the "sacred" and the "profane." Next, the dangers of social neutralization in culture and the necessity of retaining elements of the dual model along with the introduction of intermediate elements will be presented. We will …
