Micronuclei As A Marker Of Genotoxicity In An Urban Songbird., Elise Mittlestat Nov 2025

Micronuclei As A Marker Of Genotoxicity In An Urban Songbird., Elise Mittlestat

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses

A rise in industry and vehicle emissions in the last 20 years has led to an increase in exposure to air pollution. Air pollution has been identified as a major threat to both human and animal health and it has been linked to elevated oxidative stress. One of the most severe consequences of oxidative stress is genotoxic damage. Birds have been identified as promising sentinels for human health, but the effects of air pollution on genotoxicity in birds is understudied. In this study, I evaluated the association between air pollution and markers of genotoxicity in American Robins (Turdus migratorius) to …

Odor Concentration Matters: How Odor Concentration Guides Consummatory Behavior And Formation Of Odor-Taste Associations In Rats, Dinna N. Ferreira Nov 2025

Odor Concentration Matters: How Odor Concentration Guides Consummatory Behavior And Formation Of Odor-Taste Associations In Rats, Dinna N. Ferreira

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses

Taste concentration is a key determinant of palatability. For example, higher concentrations of sucrose, a sweet taste, are typically preferred to lower ones, whereas the opposite is true for citric acid, a sour taste. Yet taste is not the only determinant of food preference. Flavor arises from the integration of taste and olfactory cues, and repeated exposure to odor-taste combinations can lead odors to acquire the hedonic value of their associated taste. However, the contribution of odor concentration, independent of taste, in guiding consummatory behavior is not well understood.

To address this, we conducted two experiments using a two-bottle brief-access …

The Contractualization Of Disability Rights Law, Yaron Covo Nov 2025

The Contractualization Of Disability Rights Law, Yaron Covo

University of Chicago Law Review

What body of law determines the content and scope of disability rights in the United States? The conventional wisdom is that the rights of disabled individuals are enshrined in and shaped by an array of civil rights statutes. While this answer is correct, it is incomplete. As this Article shows, U.S. disability rights are also built upon contract law concepts and doctrines. For example, in interpreting disability rights statutes, courts have turned to the parol evidence rule, the duty of good faith, and the doctrines of impossibility, materiality, duress, and mistake. Although not explicitly enumerated in disability rights statutes, these …

Fisheries Research Report No. 355: Recreational Fishing For Western Rock Lobster In 2024/25: Estimates Of Participation, Effort And Catch, Claire B. Smallwood, Karina L. Ryan, Alissa Tate Nov 2025

Fisheries Research Report No. 355: Recreational Fishing For Western Rock Lobster In 2024/25: Estimates Of Participation, Effort And Catch, Claire B. Smallwood, Karina L. Ryan, Alissa Tate

Fisheries Research Reports

The Western Rock Lobster (WRL) (Panulirus cygnus) is the most commonly caught Rock Lobster (RL) species in Australia. Catches from the commercial and recreational sectors are required to determine and monitor Total Allowable Commercial Catch (TACC), Total Allowable Recreational Catch (TARC) and the proportion of Allowable Harvest Level (AHL) achieved. The TARC is evaluated annually based on a 5-year average.

Data for the recreational sector are obtained using phone-recall surveys to provide annual estimates of participation, fishing effort and retained catch (by numbers) from recreational fishers who hold a RL licence. Average weight, obtained from boat ramp surveys, are used …

The Impact Of Chinese And British Marital Property Division Mechanism On Chinese Women's Post-Divorce Economic Security Research, Diyin Su Nov 2025

The Impact Of Chinese And British Marital Property Division Mechanism On Chinese Women's Post-Divorce Economic Security Research, Diyin Su

SOC 605 Comparative Social Policy Research Project - Student Works

In 2025, the Civil Code Interpretation (II) of the Marriage and Family Section was released to refine the rules for dividing property in divorce and add new quantitative standards for compensation for non-economic contributions, but the traditional gender division of labor and judicial practice bias still result in women's non-economic contributions, such as household work, being neglected and insufficient financial protection after divorce. The British property division system adheres to the principle of dynamic fairness, namely, the implementation of a separate property system for the couple's property within marriage and a common property system after marriage, with more emphasis on …

Disuse muscle atrophy secondary to acute illness or injury prolongs recovery and increases risk of permanent disability as a result of reduced muscle strength and myofiber damage upon reambulation. However, there are no pharmacotherapies to support muscle growth and repair following prolonged immobility. We propose that all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) may support recovery of atrophied muscle via modulation of satellite cells and macrophages. Clinical application of ATRA is hindered by solubility, stability, and the need for high systemic doses. Therefore, in the current study, we developed poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLG) particles for local injection and extended release of ATRA (ATRA-PLG) and investigated …

Stable Isotope Paleoecology In The Bridgerian (Early Eocene): Investigation Of The Bridgerian Crash And The Canopy Effect, Aaron M. English

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The Early Eocene Climatic Optimum (EECO) was the warmest sustained interval of the Cenozoic. Its waning stages coincided with a marked decline in mammalian biodiversity known as the Bridgerian Crash, which was likely driven by increasingly cooler and drier conditions. Paleobotanical evidence suggests the early Eocene supported wet, subtropical to tropical forests at mid-latitudes, however the structure of these forests at the close of the EECO remains poorly understood. In this study, I measure carbon isotope values (d13CE) from the enamel of early Bridgerian (~52.2 – 48.3 Ma) herbivorous mammals from the Greater Green River …

The Plymouth County Comfort Dogs Program: Fostering Resiliency, Academic Success, And Relationships With Law Enforcement, Leslie J. Sattler, Robert Mcmackin, Chloe Wojtowicz

Bridgewater Review

As most dog owners will tell you, there is something special about interacting with a dog. They seem to know when we need them, whether it’s because we’re stressed, sad, or simply need an emotional boost. The rise of private individuals and professional agencies offering canine-specific animal-assisted interventions attests to these unique dog qualities. One such provider is the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office, which administers the Plymouth County Comfort Dogs Program (PCCDP), a network of handler-dog teams.

Exploratory Analysis Of Prerequisites To Teaching Early Perspective Taking In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Zoe Painter Nov 2025

Exploratory Analysis Of Prerequisites To Teaching Early Perspective Taking In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Zoe Painter

Honors College Theses

The purpose of the current study was to determine the effectiveness of a behavioral intervention package for improving perspective-taking skills in children with ASD and specifically extend previous research focused on teaching the ability to identify what others are experiencing through their senses. Less complex verbal behaviors hypothesized to be prerequisites to this skill were first assessed systematically in three male children with ASD receiving ABA services in a community-based clinic, and then participants were taught to predict behavior according to the sensory experiences of others (e.g. after observing that a man sees a fly in his drink, responding the …

Eugene Talmadge’S Library Book Purge Of 1941, David B. Parker Nov 2025

Eugene Talmadge’S Library Book Purge Of 1941, David B. Parker

Georgia Library Quarterly

In Summer 1941, Governor Eugene Talmadge ordered a purging of 23 books from Georgia’s public school libraries. The books covered several subjects: race relations, sex education, evolution, South-bashing, states’ rights, communism, and more. He was planning on running for a US Senate seat in 1942, and perhaps he did this to attract voter support—showing that he would protect the state’s traditional values from various modern threats. There was immediate opposition, with many people comparing Talmadge’s ban to German Nazism.

Critical Approaches To Jurisdiction: The Struggle For Control Of Indigenous Lands And Resources, Dayna Scott Nov 2025

Critical Approaches To Jurisdiction: The Struggle For Control Of Indigenous Lands And Resources, Dayna Scott

Articles & Book Chapters

This chapter questions the starting assumptions in thinking through questions of “jurisdiction” in public law, specifically in relation to assertions of inherent Indigenous territorial governing authority. It reviews the common conceptual images of jurisdiction we employ in law schools and offers resources from critical interdisciplinary theory for new conceptions. In highlighting examples of the present exercise of Indigenous territorial jurisdiction, such as the Kunst'aa guu— Kunst'aayah Reconciliation Protocol and the Tsleil-Waututh Sacred Trust Assessment of the Trans Mountain Expansion (TMX) project, the chapter urges public law scholars to adopt an orientation of prefiguration in order to bring into being conceptualizations …

Say Neigh To Handshake Deals: An Economic And Ethical Argument For Written Warranties In The Sales Of Thoroughbred Racehorses, Kate Coulter Nov 2025

Say Neigh To Handshake Deals: An Economic And Ethical Argument For Written Warranties In The Sales Of Thoroughbred Racehorses, Kate Coulter

William & Mary Business Law Review

Horse racing is one of the largest, most lucrative industries in the United States, but state laws regulating the exchange of billions of dollars through the sales of Thoroughbred racehorses remain inconsistent. Moreover, ethical issues such as poor breeding practices tarnish the reputation of the sport, detracting viewers and consequently endangering the future livelihood of the racing industry. Litigation over birth defects in Thoroughbreds is common, prone to appeal, and expensive. But, this litigation could be mitigated through the use of written warranties in the sale of these highly valuable horses, pursuant to and supplementing the statute of frauds and …

Objective secondary endpoints …

Gerunds In Irish Sign Language: An Exploratory Analysis, Zaid Mohammed Nov 2025

Gerunds In Irish Sign Language: An Exploratory Analysis, Zaid Mohammed

Doctoral

In sign languages (SLs), e.g., American Sign Language (ASL), gerunds help express the meaning of ongoing actions and activities conveyed by verbs (Klima & Bellugi, 1979, p. 295). In spoken languages, a gerund is a form of the verb that functions as a noun and expresses the state of being or an ongoing action (Maekelberghe, 2020). Gerunds are complex constructions as they have nominal-verbal nature (Travis, 2005, p. 321) and morphological similarity with present participle or progressive aspect (Siegel, 1998). This research is motivated by the challenging nature of distinguishing gerund constructions at the morphological level, and research in sign …

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Neutrophils play a complex role in the pathogenesis of chronic liver disease and have been linked to both liver damage and injury resolution. Recent reports propose that neutrophils drive liver injury and fibrosis through the formation of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs). This study tests the hypothesis that the enzyme peptidyl arginine deiminase-4 (PAD4) drives NET formation and liver fibrosis in experimental chronic liver injury. Wild-type (PAD4+/+) and PAD4-deficient (PAD4-/-) mice were chronically challenged twice weekly with carbon tetrachloride (CCl4, 1 ml/kg, i.p) or vehicle (corn oil) for 6 weeks, and samples were collected 24 h after the final challenge. In …

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Background

The lungs of squamate reptiles (lizards and snakes) are highly diverse, exhibiting single chambers, multiple chambers, transitional forms with two to three chambers, along with a suite of other anatomical features, including finger-like epithelial projections into the body cavity known as diverticulae. During embryonic development of the simple, sac-like lungs of anoles, the epithelium is pushed through the openings of a pulmonary smooth muscle mesh by the forces of luminal fluid pressure. This process of stress ball morphogenesis generates the faveolar epithelium typical of squamate lungs.

Results

Here, we compared embryonic lung development in brown anoles, leopard geckos, and …

While circadian rhythm disruption may promote neurodegenerative disease, the impact of aging and neurodegenerative pathology on circadian gene expression patterns in different brain cell types remains unknown. Here we used a translating ribosome affinity purification to identify the circadian translatomes of astrocytes, microglia and bulk tissue in healthy mouse cortex and in the settings of amyloid-β plaque pathology or aging. We show that glial circadian translatomes are highly cell-type-specific and exhibit profound, context-dependent reprogramming in response to amyloid pathology or aging. Transcripts involved in glial reactivity, immunometabolism and proteostasis, as well as nearly half of all Alzheimer's disease risk genes, …

Revealing Hidden And Concealed Vehicle Compartments. A Survey Of States’ Efforts At Addressing Prohibition Era Tactics, Douglas A. Kash, Diya Rattan

Northern Illinois University Law Review

The transportation of contraband such as controlled substances, illegal firearms, stolen items, and proceeds from criminal activities can take many forms and are subject to the ever-evolving creative efforts by traffickers and criminal organizations to avoid detection by law enforcement. However, one of the simplest and most straightforward mechanisms of transport is in hidden or “trap” compartments in motor vehicles. However, given the legitimate use of discreet compartments (sometimes referred to as “automotive safes” or “traps”) in motor vehicles to secure personal items, important paperwork, and even licensed firearms, a question arises as to whether hidden and false compartments in …
