The Great Recession, The Resulting Budget Shortfalls, The 2010 Elections And The Attack On Public Sector Collective Bargaining In The United States, Kenneth Glenn Dau-Schmidt, Winston Lin
Hofstra Labor & Employment Law Journal
American public sector unions and collective bargaining have been subjected to a vicious attack under the auspices of balancing government budgets, promoting "equity" between private and public employees and limiting the impact of "special interests" on government policy. The American and world financial crisis of 2007 resulted in the Great Recession of 2008 and substantial budget shortfalls for local and national governments world-wide. This financial crisis and the resulting disintegration of aggregate demand and employment are eerily similar to the financial crisis and collapse that led to the Great Depression of the 1930’s. However, unlike the calamity of the 1930’s, …

Critical Animal Studies And Animal Law, Maneesha Deckha
Critical Animal Studies And Animal Law, Maneesha Deckha
Animal Law Review
Law is anthropocentric. With the limited exception of its treatment of the corporation, law is a system of rules that privileges the concept of the human and ascribes reality through a human perspective. Appreciating this, it is truly impressive that animal issues in the law have become so prominent throughout the legal education system. With this increased exposure to posthumanist critiques of the legal system and its status for and treatment of animals, an increasing number of those involved in legal education are rethinking the law’s species-based hierarchy that places humans at the apex. This flourishing interest in animal law …
An International Treaty For Animal Welfare, David Favre
An International Treaty For Animal Welfare, David Favre
Animal Law Review
Currently there is no international agreement that ensures the welfare and protection of animals. Nor is there any international standard that regulates and defines the acceptable treatment of animals. This lack of international consensus leads to the current disparate treatment of animals around the world, echoing the need for an international framework addressing the issue. This Article discusses a proposed umbrella treaty, the International Convention for the Protection of Animals (ICPA). This umbrella treaty would enable animal welfare issues to gain international recognition and protection by setting the general guidelines and polices regarding the treatment and use of animals. This …

Farber Institute for Neuroscience Faculty Papers
The CAG trinucleotide repeat mutation in the Huntington's disease gene (HTT) exhibits age-dependent tissue-specific expansion that correlates with disease onset in patients, implicating somatic expansion as a disease modifier and potential therapeutic target. Somatic HTT CAG expansion is critically dependent on proteins in the mismatch repair (MMR) pathway. To gain further insight into mechanisms of somatic expansion and the relationship of somatic expansion to the disease process in selectively vulnerable MSNs we have crossed HTT CAG knock-in mice (HdhQ111) with mice carrying a conditional (floxed) Msh2 allele and D9-Cre transgenic mice, in which Cre recombinase is expressed specifically in MSNs …
(2012) My Name Is Myshkin: A Philosophical Novel For Children, David K. Kennedy
(2012) My Name Is Myshkin: A Philosophical Novel For Children, David K. Kennedy
Collected Papers of David Kennedy
My Name is Myshkin is a philosophical novel written with children ages approximately 10-14 in mind. The book offers a fantasy adventure plot line interweaving narrative themes of ecology, mythology, psychology, spirituality and social justice, which interplay with its more purely philosophical material. Myshkin, the ten-year old narrator of the story, engages in numerous conversations with three school friends. A few of the many questions they take up are: whether one “is” one’s body, how we can tell what is real, animals and humans, youth and age, what is alive, the origins of evil, superstition and belief, whether there is …
Food Safety Attitudes In College Students, Rachelle Booth
Food Safety Attitudes In College Students, Rachelle Booth
Honors Theses
College students are one of the most at-risk population groups for food poisoning, due to risky food safety behaviors. Using the Likert Scale, undergraduate students were asked to participate in a Food Safety Survey which was completed by 499 students ages 18-25. Data was analyzed using SPSS and AMOS statistical software. Four conceptual definitions regarding food safety were defined as: general food safety, bacterial food safety, produce food safety, and politics associated with food safety. Knowledge seems to be an important factor in shaing student's attitudes regarding general and bacterial activity. Ethnicity plays a role in how people view the …
Sustainability In School Architecture: Learning From Tradition And Modernity, Jose Quezada
Sustainability In School Architecture: Learning From Tradition And Modernity, Jose Quezada
Honors Theses
The terms "sustainability," "sustainable." or "green" are often used to define products or processes that ironically result in limited or negative environmental benefits. Today, our contemporary building construction industry tends to solve environmental performance issues with technological solutions that in some instances have become superficial "green" practices. At times, they lead to counterproductive outcomes and tend to disregard environmental lessons and processes used in the historical buidling traditions. The best traditional architecture responds to local environmental issues using the generational lessons from the past and present. The goal of this thesis is to identify how the best sustainable building practices …

The tiger population that once inhabited the Korean peninsula was initially considered a unique subspecies (Panthera tigris coreensis), distinct from the Amur tiger of the Russian Far East (P. t. altaica). However, in the following decades, the population of P. t. coreensis was classified as P. t. altaica and hence forth the two populations have been considered the same subspecies. From an ecological point of view, the classification of the Korean tiger population as P. t. altaica is a plausible conclusion. Historically, there were no major dispersal barriers between the Korean peninsula and the habitat of …

Variation In Flight Morphology In A Damselfly With Female-Limited Polymorphism, Emily Jane Mctavish, Genevieve K. Smith, Rafael F. Guerrero, Eben Gering
Biology Faculty Articles
Background: Female-limited colour polymorphisms occur in many species of dragonflies and damselflies. Often one female morph appears male-like in coloration (androchromes) whereas one or more others are distinct from males (gynochromes). These androchromes are hypothesized to be male-mimics, thereby avoiding the harassment of excessive male mating attempts.
Organism: The damselfly Ischnura ramburii, Rambur’s forktail, is a widespread New World species with androchrome and gynochrome females. It was introduced to the Hawaiian Islands in the mid-1970s and females were thought to be exclusively gynochromatic there.
Questions: How do males and females differ in their flight apparatus? Do females with different …

The recent rise in speed and efficiency of new sequencing technologies have facilitated high-throughput sequencing, assembly and analyses of genomes, advancing ongoing efforts to analyze genetic sequences across major vertebrate groups. Standardized procedures in acquiring high quality DNA and RNA and establishing cell lines from target species will facilitate these initiatives. We provide a legal and methodological guide according to four standards of acquiring and storing tissue for the Genome 10K Project and similar initiatives as follows: four-star (banked tissue/cell cultures, RNA from multiple types of tissue for transcriptomes, and sufficient flash-frozen tissue for 1 mg of DNA, all from …
Genome Empowerment For The Puerto Rican Parrot – Amazona Vittata, Stephen J. O'Brien
Genome Empowerment For The Puerto Rican Parrot – Amazona Vittata, Stephen J. O'Brien
Biology Faculty Articles
A unique community-funded project in Puerto Rico has launched whole-genome sequencing of the critically endangered Puerto Rican Parrot (Amazona vittata), with interpretation by genome bioinformaticians and students, and deposition into public online databases. This is the first article that focuses on the whole genome of a parrot species, one endemic to the USA and recently threatened with extinction. It provides invaluable conservation tools and a vivid example of hopeful prospects for future genome assessment of so many new species. It also demonstrates inventive ways for smaller institutions to contribute to a field largely considered the domain of large …
Managing Climate Change Through Biological Sequestration: Open Space Law Redux, John R. Nolon
Managing Climate Change Through Biological Sequestration: Open Space Law Redux, John R. Nolon
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
Climate change management involves strategies that mitigate its causes and adapt human communities to its consequences. This article describes a legal strategy that does both: a national biological sequestration policy. This policy will increase the amount of carbon dioxide emissions that biological sequestration currently removes from the atmosphere and will enable human settlements to adapt to the harsh effects of a changing climate, while realizing a number of other objectives that preserved open space preservation achieves. The article sketches the influences of international and national climate change law, which largely ignore the benefits of biological sequestration on privately owned land …
Long Term Weight Variability In Adults Of Adventist Health Study 1 And 2, Namgyal Lhawang Kyulo
Long Term Weight Variability In Adults Of Adventist Health Study 1 And 2, Namgyal Lhawang Kyulo
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Background: The effect of overweight and obesity on the risk of fatal disease tends to attenuate with age. One plausible explanation is that a proportion of elderly people in the ideal weight category (19 to 25 kg/m ) experienced disease-related weight loss - an effect that will attenuate health risk related to overweight and obesity. One potential approach to controlling for this bias would be to examine fluctuations in weight during the adult lifespan by considering multiple measures of weight or recall of body weight during adulthood. Some of these measures are available in the Adventist Health Study cohorts and …
The Effect Of Superman, Agamous, And Acs-7 Gene Manipulations On Sex Determination In Transgenic Fragaria Vesca 'Hawaii-4', Xin Ding
Master's Theses and Capstones
Sex determination is of interest to plant breeders who transfer useful genes from wild relatives to the cultivated strawberry. The potential roles in sex determination of seven candidate genes, which included five SUPERMAN genes, the AGAMOUS gene, and the ACS-7 gene, were studied by re-introducing them into diploid strawberry as overexpression and RNAi constructs by Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. All of the transgenic calli expressed the GFP fluorescence marker. Among regenerated plants, some AGAMOUS-silenced plants transiently displayed a petalloid stamen or a vestigial petal phenotype, pointing to the AGAMOUS gene as negative regulator of A- and B-class genes according to the widely …
The Accessibility And Scalability Of Gene Family Analysis, James Jackson
The Accessibility And Scalability Of Gene Family Analysis, James Jackson
Master's Theses and Capstones
Gene family detection allows us to gain a better understanding of how different genomes are related. At UNH, we have a pipeline that computes these families using a variety of methods. However, the pipeline is inefficient, and performs poorly on large numbers of genornes. The pipeline is comprised of many Pert scripts, which are complex to use, and require specific organization of the data at each step. This means that all users of the pipeline must undergo training to understand each step of the pipeline and the intricacies of each script. The goal of my thesis is two-fold. First, I …

Hemoglobin Type, Egg Buoyancy, And Antifreeze Glycoprotein Production As Mechanisms For Adaptive Variation In Gulf Of Maine Atlantic Cod (Gadus Morhua), Amanda R. Clapp
Master's Theses and Capstones
Three physiological traits were examined to compare captive populations of winter- and spring-spawning cod from the Gulf of Maine, as differences in these traits have been observed in other locally-adapted subpopulations. Daily mean neutral buoyancy of hatchery-spawned eggs was observed at three temperatures (5, 10, and 12°C) and three photoperiods (15:9, 9:15, and 24:0 L: D) at 12°C. Body fluids of larvae held at 0°C for five days were tested for antifreeze glycoproteins (AFGPs) to determine the onset of AFGP production. Juveniles held at 0°C were bled between 20 and 35 days to determine induction time for AFGP production. Hemoglobin …
Transesterification Of Waste Vegetable Oil By Thermomyces Lanuginosus Lipase Immobilized On Zeolite Zsm-5, Ye Deng
Master's Theses and Capstones
In this thesis, the effect of organic solvent-cosolvent system, temperature, methanol concentration, water content and used enzyme washing method on transesterification of waste vegetable oil catalyzed by Thermomyces lanuginosus lipase immobilized on zeolite ZSM-5 was investigated. Four organic solvents, one co-solvent, three reaction temperatures, three methanol addition methods, four different water content and two used-enzyme washing methods were assessed. Optimal conditions were obtained with n-hexane as solvent, 5 vol.% tert-butanol as co-solvent, 25°C reaction temperature, batch addition of 3 equivalent molar methanol, water content equivalent to 7.5% by weight, and used-enzyme washing method B. It was also confirmed that the …
