Activity Rhythms Expressed By Juvenile American Horseshoe Crabs, Limulus Polyphemus, Elizabeth Anne Dubofsky Jan 2012

Activity Rhythms Expressed By Juvenile American Horseshoe Crabs, Limulus Polyphemus, Elizabeth Anne Dubofsky

Master's Theses and Capstones

The goals of this study were to determine if juvenile horseshoe crabs, Limulus polyphemus, express daily or tidal patterns of activity and how light and tidal cycles influence these patterns. When exposed to a light:dark cycle (n=24), 63% of juveniles exhibit daily patterns of locomotion and 25% of juveniles express circatidal patterns. When subsequently exposed to constant darkness, 17% express circadian rhythms of activity, 25% express a combination of circadian and circatidal patterns, and 46% express circatidal patterns of activity. When exposed to tidal cycles (n=42), 55% of juveniles express tidal patterns of activity, while the remainder exhibit either a …

Had Feminists Only Thought Of Food: Men's And Women's Relationship With Food, 1963-1981, Laura Crean Jan 2012

Had Feminists Only Thought Of Food: Men's And Women's Relationship With Food, 1963-1981, Laura Crean

Master's Theses and Capstones

This thesis explores whether the women's movement changed how men and women interacted with food between 1963 and 1981. Through the examination of popular magazines Esquire and Mademoiselle , this thesis analyzes articles and advertisements to gauge where there was change. Men's relationship with food did not change. Men continuously cooked only as a hobby, recreating dishes they ate at fine-dining restaurants promoting themselves as connoisseurs. On the other hand, women experienced positive and negative changes as well as stagnation. Sexual liberation allowed women to embrace the sexual connotations of food for the first time in over a century. Yet, …

Quantifying The Effects Of Tidal Restrictions And Plant Invasions On Resident Fish In Atlantic Coast Salt Marshes, Kimberly Lellis Dibble Jan 2012

Quantifying The Effects Of Tidal Restrictions And Plant Invasions On Resident Fish In Atlantic Coast Salt Marshes, Kimberly Lellis Dibble

Open Access Dissertations

This research investigates the combined effects of tidal restriction and Phragmites australis invasion on habitat quality for marsh fauna across a large geographic area while evaluating the reversal of those effects through ecological restoration. We used meta-analytic tools and published literature to examine differences in the quantity, condition, and diversity of fauna in invaded and restored marshes relative to uninvaded (reference) marshes in the mid-Atlantic and in New England. In addition, we collected data for two projects designed to move beyond the collection of community data (e.g., density, richness, as included in the meta-analysis) to assess the functional response of …

Onabotulinumtoxin A In The Treatment Of Migraine Headache, Carrie O. Dougherty, Md, Stephen Silberstein, Md Jan 2012

Onabotulinumtoxin A In The Treatment Of Migraine Headache, Carrie O. Dougherty, Md, Stephen Silberstein, Md

Department of Jefferson Headache Center Papers and Presentations

Recent trials have demonstrated that onabotulinumtoxinA is a safe and effective treatment for the prevention of chronic migraine headaches. Although the exact effect of the toxin on the pathophysiology of migraine is not clear, several in-vivo and in-vitro models have shown that onabotulinumtoxinA inhibits the release of neurotransmitters and neuropeptides involved in pain signaling pathways with resulting attenuation of both peripheral and central sensitization in migraine. Limited systemic adverse effects and physician administered treatments that eliminate concerns for patient compliance have made onabotulinumtoxin A an appealing alternative to oral prophylactic medications for migraine. This article is designed to provide an …

Kimmel Cancer Center Faculty Papers

MicroRNAs are a class of small noncoding RNAs that function as critical gene regulators through targeting mRNAs for translational repression or degradation. In this study, we showed that miR-128 expression levels were decreased in glioma, and identified p70S6K1 as a novel direct target of miR-128. Overexpression of miR-128 suppressed p70S6K1 and its downstream signaling molecules such as HIF-1 and VEGF expression, and attenuated cell proliferation, tumor growth and angiogenesis. Forced expression of p70S6K1 can partly rescue the inhibitory effect of miR-128 in the cells. Taken together, these findings will shed light to the role and mechanism of miR-128 in regulating …

Supplier Tactics For Dealing With Financially Distressed Corporate Customers, John A. Pearce Ii, Ilya A. Lipin

UC Law Business Journal

The 2007 recession led to thousands of corporate bankruptcies. When a corporation declares bankruptcy, suppliers are forced to recover payments that are legally owed to them, and thus suffer severe economic losses. Suppliers can benefit from being proactive in their use of legal tools to increase the probability of collecting receivables from their customers. This article explains how bankruptcy can affect suppliers' ability to obtain full payment for goods sold and details remedies available to suppliers under the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act ("BAPCPA"). The author also provides tactics for how to improve the leverage of the supplier …

Debunking The Myth That Insurance Coverage Is Not Available Or Allowed For Intentional Torts Or Damages, Christopher C. French Jan 2012

Debunking The Myth That Insurance Coverage Is Not Available Or Allowed For Intentional Torts Or Damages, Christopher C. French

UC Law Business Journal

A common misconception that insurance coverage is not available for intentional injuries or damage is, in fact, untrue. This myth is based in the “fortuity doctrine” that provides insurance should only cover losses by chance, and public policy that disfavors insurance for intentional harms. In reality, many types of liability insurance policies cover intentional torts ranging from trademark infringement to defamation and employment discrimination. These policies also cover punitive damage awards in most jurisdictions. Furthermore, public policy actually favors insurance recoveries for intentional torts because no empirical data exists to support the proposition that liability insurance increases policy holder misconduct. …

Design And Characterization Of Micro-Porous Hyaluronic Acid Hydrogels For In Vitro Gene Transfer To Mmscs, Talar Tokatlian, Cynthia Cam, Shayne N. Siegman, Yuguo Lei, Tatiana Segura

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Faculty Publications

The effective and sustained delivery of DNA locally would increase the applicability of gene therapy in tissue regeneration and therapeutic angiogenesis. One promising approach is to use porous hydrogel scaffolds to encapsulate and deliver nucleotides in the form of nanoparticles to the affected sites. We have designed and characterized micro-porous (μ-pore) hyaluronic acid hydrogels which allow for effective cell seeding in vitro post scaffold fabrication and allow for cell spreading and proliferation without requiring high levels of degradation. These factors, coupled with high loading efficiency of DNA polyplexes using a previously developed caged nanoparticle encapsulation (CnE) technique, then allowed for …

The Processes Underlying Flexibility In Childhood, Lucy Cragg, Nicolas Chevalier Jan 2012

The Processes Underlying Flexibility In Childhood, Lucy Cragg, Nicolas Chevalier

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

It is now well established in the adult literature that the ability to engage in flexible thought and action is a complex skill that relies on a number of underlying processes. The development of this skill has received growing interest in recent years. However, theories explaining children’s ability to switch between different tasks typically focus on a single underlying process and are rarely extended to explain development beyond the preschool years. This article reviews the current literature on set shifting in children in comparison with task switching in adults, in order to highlight the range of factors that impact on …

The Discriminating Mother : Own V. Alien And Male V. Female, Eric Mcdaniel

Honors Theses

The Discriminating Mother: Own v. Alien and Male v. Female It is o en stated that one of the greatest bonds that exists is between mother and child. Previous research has shown that mothers experience modi cations in their brain chemistry and structure due to the e ects of pregnancy, parturition, and motherhood in animal models (Lambert & Kinsley, 2012). If an individual cannot have children of her own she may chose to adopt a child to l ll that niche and rge a similar bond. One may ask, however, whether this bond between mother and child is equivalent in …

Virginia's Expanded Nutrient Trading Law: Will It Help Restore The Chesapeake Bay While Allowing For Growth, Margaret L. Sanner Jan 2012

Virginia's Expanded Nutrient Trading Law: Will It Help Restore The Chesapeake Bay While Allowing For Growth, Margaret L. Sanner

Richmond Journal of Law and the Public Interest

On April 18, 2012, Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell boosted the Commonwealth's pollution-reduction toolbox with an expanded nutrient trading program when he signed H.B. 176/S.B. 77 into law.' Sparked by the issuance of the Chesapeake Bay Total Maximum Daily Load (the "Bay TMDL"), which updated pollution limits for the Chesapeake Bay and tributaries, and the Virginia Chesapeake Bay TMDL Phase I Watershed Implementation Plan (the "Phase I WIP"),2 the expanded nutrient trading program allows myriad new market participants to generate and sell certified "nutrient credits"3 to others to meet existing limits or to offset new pollution from expansion.4 If the program …

Spirits, Vitality, And Creation In The Poetics Of Tommaso Campanella And John Donne, Anthony P. Russell

In discussions over the meaning of "genius" in the Renaissance, there is at the very least agreement that the term was associated with heightened powers of perception and creativity. Whether defined in terms of Neoplatonic notions of inspiration, Aristotelian/Galenic theories of the humors (and of melancholy in particular), or rhetorical theories of invention, ingegno is acknowledged as having denoted an unusual mental energy and flexibility which facilitated the creative process. It is the psychic mobility with which ingegno was consistently linked that I intend to emphasize here, and in particular its frequent identification with those volatile spirits that were centrally …

Recycling Electronic Wastes In Nigeria: Putting Environmental And Human Rights At Risk, Christine Terada Jan 2012

Recycling Electronic Wastes In Nigeria: Putting Environmental And Human Rights At Risk, Christine Terada

Northwestern Journal of Human Rights

Unregulated recycling of electronic waste (e-waste) has led to environmental degradation and human rights violationsmost often in developing countries in Asia and Africa where exporting is easy, labor laws are lax, and communities are poor. While the global market for new high-technology electronic products continues to grow, so does the amount of discarded products. This article explores the e-waste trade in Nigeria and discusses how developed countries, as well as the developing countries, must actively end the e-waste trade that exploits human workers and the environment.

Intervention Of Right In Judicial Proceedings To Review Informal Federal Rulemaking, Michael Ray Harris Jan 2012

Intervention Of Right In Judicial Proceedings To Review Informal Federal Rulemaking, Michael Ray Harris

Hofstra Law Review

The codification of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure in 1938 (the “Federal Rules”) created not only a more transactional approach to litigation, but also the flexible party structure that was necessary for “public law litigation” to flourish. Indeed, many argue that intervention by non-parties in public law cases is essential to ensure that the court can hear from and protect the wide range of interests likely to be impacted by its decision. This Article seeks to make a case for limiting intervention as of right in a specific subset of public law proceedings –– those brought to review the …

The First Amendment Is An Information Policy, Jack M. Balkin Jan 2012

The First Amendment Is An Information Policy, Jack M. Balkin

Hofstra Law Review

This essay, based on the 20th annual Hugo Black lecture at Wesleyan University, argues that we should think about individual liberties of freedom of speech, press, and assembly not in isolation, but in the larger context of policies for the spread and growth of knowledge andinformation.

Although we normally think about the First Amendment as an individual right, we should also see it as an integral part of a knowledge and information policy for a democratic state. That is because the practical ability to speak rests on an infrastructure of free expression that involves a wide range of institutions, statutory …

How Should Plastic-Packaging Companies Apply Artificial Proofs And Topics Of Invention To Communicate Sustainability? : A Heuristic Developed On The Basis Of Rhetorical Analysis, Shristy Bashyal

Masters Theses

"This study examines how the ten plastic-packaging companies use artificial proofs and topics of invention to communicate sustainability-related information. The objective of this study was to answer the following research questions:

(i) Do plastic-packaging companies define sustainability on their website?

(ii) What are the strengths and weaknesses of the arguments in these companies' sustainability-related communications?

(iii) What invention strategies should technical marketing communicators use to communicate company's sustainable practices?

To answer these questions, I analyzed the sustainability-related documents available on the websites of the ten companies. On the basis of this analysis, I developed an invention heuristic that can be …
