Alternative sigma subunit-54 (RpoN) forms holoenzyme complex when associated with core RNA Polymerase (RNAP) to specifically recognise and initiate transcription of specific sets of genes in response to environmental stimuli. RpoN has important role in many major adaptive responses in bacteria and is involved in various physiological responses such as pathogenesis, quorum sensing and bioremediation. Dynamics And Trophic Role Of Zooplankton Community In The Matang Mangrove Estuaries And Adjacent Coastal Waters (Peninsular Malaysia), With Special Emphasis On Copepods / Chew Li Lee, Li Lee Chew

Dynamics and trophic role of zooplankton community were studied in the Matang mangrove estuaries and adjacent coastal waters, Malaysia. Monthly zooplankton samples collected from May 2002 to October 2003 at five stations located from the upper estuary (7 km upstream) to 16 km offshore showed highest biomass and abundance of zooplankton at nearshore waters. Both standing stocks decreased towards upstream and offshore waters. Copepods (62% of total zooplankton abundance) dominated the zooplankton, followed by larvae of cirripede (18%) and polychaete (4%). The occurrences of macroparasites from 543 stray cats were studied in four urban cities from west (Kuala Lumpur), east (Kuantan), north (Georgetown) and south (Malacca) of Peninsular Malaysia between May 2007 to August 2010. The hosts were infested with a minimum of one species and a maximum of six species of macroparasites. Of all four locations, Georgetown had the highest species diversity followed by Malacca, Kuala Lumpur and Kuantan. Five ectoparasites species were recovered namely, Ctenocephalides felis, Felicola subrostratus, Haemaphysalis bispinosa, Heterodoxus spiniger and Lynxacarus radovskyi. Biomass of various sources such as those of cellulosic and hemicellulosic contents were proven to produced bioethanol. This study focused on the production of bioethanol from waste fruits of grapes and apples using yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which is viewed as a mean of reducing environmental pollution. High bioethanol production was obtained using yeast loading of 4 g/L at 32°C after 3 days of fermentation time producing bio-ethanol 13.1% (v/v) and 9.2% (v/v) in rotten grapesand apples respectively. Bootstrapping is a de-facto standard for displaying the validity of a phylogenetic tree. However this may not be the case as bootstrapping assume that the random sequence exist within the genome. In order to examine whether bootstrapping is a valid process, it must be done empirically. Across multiple taxa there are minimal fully curated genomes but there are mitochondrion genomes available to test this. Stability, antioxidant properties, toxicology profile of betacyanins and selected target genes from Hylocereus polyrhizus were studied. In the stability study, the pigments were obtained using water extraction and juice concentration; extracted at room temperature (RT) and 100ºC; and stored under -20ºC, 4ºC and RT. In the water extraction method, the best weight: volume ratio was obtained using the ratio of 1:1. Pigments extracted at RT and from juice concentrate showed lower total betalain concentration changes as compared to samples extracted at 100ºC and from water extraction. This thesis focused on the synthesis and self assembly studies of compounds involving carbohydrates. Two different types of materials were studied, i.e. surfactants and chromonics. Physical investigations of the compounds were conducted by TGA, DSC, OPM, UV-Vis spectroscopy, 1H NMR and surface tension measurements. Sugar-based surfactants are interesting compounds for pharmaceutical and personal care products. Current commercially available surfactants such as alkyl poly glucoside surfactants (APGs) are prepared from low miscibility of sugars and fatty alcohols. The phytochemical analysis was carried out using hexane, chloroform and water extraction of the leaves and stems of L. flavescens. The detection methods used were thin layer chromatography (TLC), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and liquid chromatography mass spectrometry combined with mass spectrometry (LCMS/MS). The TLC of all extracts using three solvents screened for flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, terpenoids and essential oils. Selected sperm and oocyte factors related were evaluated in ICSI experiments involving mouse and goat species in the present study. The mouse oocyte collection was conducted through oviduct retrieval, while the goat oocytes were retrieved via LOPU technique. The effectiveness of sperm capacitation chemical treatment (Heparin and Theophylline) for 1 hour and sperm movement (Rapid and Slow) were identified in both species. This study is a comparison between physical parameters and soil characteristics of two mangrove habitats on Carey Island. Selected parameters were conducted at three stations in mangrove habitat (Site 1) along the Langat River which contain a good community of mangrove forest. Similar study was also conducted in a degraded mangrove habitat along eroding sea line (Site 2). The obligate intracellular protozoan parasite, Toxoplasma gondii, is the etiologic agent of an opportunistic infection affecting mainly immunocompromised patients, infants and neonates with immature immune system. There is a need for alternative antiparasitic treatment for toxoplasmosis due to the associated toxicity and teratogenicity of the current drug treatment regime. Freshwater algae can be used as indicators to monitor freshwater ecosystem condition because algae react quickly and predictably to a broad range of pollutants. Research reported that Algae can provide early signals of worsening environment. This study was carried out to develop a computer-based image processing technique with artificial neural network (ANN) approaches to automatically detect, recognize, and identify algae genera from the divisions of Bacillariophyta, Chlorophyta and Cyanobacteria in Putrajaya Lake.
