The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of a health promotion intervention program (TIPTOP package) in preventing early childhood caries (ECC), to improve nutritional status and dietary habits among toddlers. The study design was an intervention prospective study and conducted in Tumpat and Pasir Mas districts in Kelantan. The intervention group was 2-3 year old toddlers in Tumpat and received the TIPTOP package, while the control group was in Pasir Mas and received the normal toddlers’ oral health program under the MOH. Selected sperm and oocyte factors related were evaluated in ICSI experiments involving mouse and goat species in the present study. The mouse oocyte collection was conducted through oviduct retrieval, while the goat oocytes were retrieved via LOPU technique. The effectiveness of sperm capacitation chemical treatment (Heparin and Theophylline) for 1 hour and sperm movement (Rapid and Slow) were identified in both species. For oocyte factors, the effects of post-hCG injection durations (13-15 hours and 16-18 hours) in mice were studied. This study is a comparison between physical parameters and soil characteristics of two mangrove habitats on Carey Island. Selected parameters were conducted at three stations in mangrove habitat (Site 1) along the Langat River which contain a good community of mangrove forest. Similar study was also conducted in a degraded mangrove habitat along eroding sea line (Site 2). In Site 1; the water parameters featured high and almost constant salinity, high water temperature, high conductivity but relatively low dissolved oxygen concentration and high TDS. The obligate intracellular protozoan parasite, Toxoplasma gondii, is the etiologic agent of an opportunistic infection affecting mainly immunocompromised patients, infants and neonates with immature immune system. There is a need for alternative antiparasitic treatment for toxoplasmosis due to the associated toxicity and teratogenicity of the current drug treatment regime. To investigate a potential alternative strategy, we have used the phage-display system and developed a novel biopanning procedure to isolate single-chain Fv (scFv) antibodies probed against tachyzoites – the rapidly replicating form of T. gondii responsible for acute disease. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is one of the main bacterial pathogens responsible for a variety of nosocomial infections ranging from soft-tissue infections to bacteremia. Since most MRSA is often resistant to multiple antibiotics, this has raised a concern over the limited choice of antimicrobial-agents for treatment of life-threatening cases. The objectives of this study were to determine the antimicrobial resistance profiles, presence of resistance and virulence genes, to investigate the molecular epidemiology of MRSA and their evolution over a six-year period. Freshwater algae can be used as indicators to monitor freshwater ecosystem condition because algae react quickly and predictably to a broad range of pollutants. Research reported that Algae can provide early signals of worsening environment. This study investigated the presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) in the wastewater effluents of PETZONE and sediments of the Musa Bay (around the PETZONE coastal area) from Jun 2009 to Jun 2010. The primary objectives of this study were to evaluate the sources of pollutants and each pollutant‘s distribution, concentration and contamination degree, as well as to assess the biological response to these stressors based on the ecological risk. Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) in bivalves which belong to the phase II detoxification metabolism, have an advantage to be used as biomarkers of aquatic pollution. The preliminary study was to isolate and purify the GSTs from Malaysian bivalve, Orbicularia orbiculata or locally known as Siput Lala. The GST enzyme was purified by using two different matrices of affinity chromatography which were GSTrapTM HP and GSH-agarose (C3). Total proteins attained from both eluates were 0.24±0.003mg and 0.12±0.07mg for GSTrapTM HP column and GSH-agarose (C3) column, respectively. Goniothalamus tapisoides Mat Salleh, a plant from Annonaceae family, has been studied. Collected from Sarawak, the bark of this plant were dried and grounded before phytochemical study was performed. The chromatographic separation on the dichloromethane extracts of the bark gave eleven compounds – six known and five new. Six known compounds were identified as goniothalamin 1, pterodondiol 164, liriodenine 114, 9-deoxygoniopypyrone 15, benzamide 161 and cinnamic acid 155. Five new compounds are goniomicin A 157, goniomicin B 158, goniomicin C 159, goniomicin D 160 and tapisoidin 162.

total of 122 samples were examined in this study were trapped by using pitfall traps, except for Suncus murinus species, which was caught with a rat trap. The 14 skull characters of seven species measured from the past and present studies were subjected to principal component analysis. Although Crocidura negligens was never trapped in this study, earlier studies indicated that this species was distinct from other Crocidura species. Currently, Crocidura monticola are commonly found in Peninsular Malaysia and widely distributed in Sundaland. Previous studies indicated that Crocidura fuliginosa was dominant species in this region. Quorum sensing (QS) describes bacterial cell density dependent signaling mechanisms through autoinducers that are involved in mediation of bioluminescence, biofilm development, antibiotic production and virulence factor expressions. Attenuation of quorum sensing signals termed as quorum quenching (QQ) have been identified in a range of living organisms, including bacteria and eukaryotes. The production and degradation of QS compound N-acyl homoserine lactones (AHL) by bacteria isolated from Malaysian montane forest soil were assessed in this study. A preliminary study on the chemical constituents of Aglaia exima was performed. The leaves of Aglaia exima was extracted in three different solvents: hexane, dichloromethane and methanol. The fractionation of the hexane extract of the leaves of Aglaia exima collected in Terengganu led to the isolation of one new cycloartane triterpenoid; cycloart-24-ene-26-ol-3-one 203 and seven known compounds, which are four cycloartane triterpenoids; 24(E)-cycloart-24-ene-3β,26-diol 199, vaticinone 200, schizandronic acid 201, 24(E)-3β-hydroxycycloart-24-ene-26-al 204, one dammarane triterpenoid; cabraleahydroxylactone 202 and two steroids; β-sitosterol 205 (sterol) and stigmast-5-ene-28-one 207 (sterol). Bcl-xL is an anti-apoptotic protein that is frequently found to be overexpressed in lung adenocarcinoma leading to an inhibition of apoptosis and associated with poor prognosis of this disease. Recently, the roles of microRNAs (miRNAs) in regulating apoptosis and cell survival during tumorigenesis have become evident, with cancer cells showing perturbed expression of various miRNAs. In this project, we utilized miRNA microarrays to determine if miRNA dysregulation in bcl-xL silenced A549 lung adenocarcinoma cells could be involved in apoptotic behavior. This research was made to study the antimicrobial activity of fungal isolates from different regions of maritime, Antarctica, namely, King George Island and Greenwich Island (Barrientos Island, Dee Island and Ambato point). A total of 17 isolates composed of 7 mesophilic and 10 psychrotrophic fungi were tested in-vitro against Gram-positive, Gram-negative bacteria and yeast human pathogens. Initial antimicrobial activity screening of Antarctic isolates was made using plug assay method. Five test-microorganisms namely Candida albicans, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were used. This study was carried out to describe and characterize uses of plants that are tended or cultivated in home gardens in Peninsular Malaysia. A survey through floristic inspection of home gardens and semi-structured interviews with home garden owners were carried out at 94 home at various villages in Peninsular Malaysia from June through December of 2008. Climate change components such as sea level rise and increased atmospheric carbon dioxide is likely to affect plant communities at various scales. Mangrove ecosystems are highly threatened by the sea level rise as a result of prolonged waterlogging. Four sets of experiments were set up to study the ecology and physiology of Avicennia alba, Avicennia marina and Bruguiera parviflora under simulated sea level rise. In elevated sea level, A. alba and B. parviflora indicated similar responses with initial height increments, decreased stem diameter and leaf formation; and increased leaf fall. The fixation of carbon dioxide by microalgae plays a major role in mitigation of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere as it can reduce the “Greenhouse” effects. In this study, ten strains of microalgae from the University of Malaya Algae Culture Collection (UMACC) were used for selection of potential strains with high biomass, lipid, protein and carbohydrate productivity. The microalgae screened included freshwater and marine strains including one isolated from palm oil mill effluent (Chlorella UMACC 275). Little information was available on the forensically important specimens collected from carcasses in indoor and different ecological habitats in Malaysia. This study was attempted to determine the arthropod succession on carcasses (1) placed in different ecological habitats, such as lowland forested area, coastal area and montane forested area; (2) placed in indoor and outdoor conditions; and (3) carcasses being incinerated, submerged in freshwater river, and treated with insecticide and its effect on post mortem interval (PMI) estimation. The palm oil industry in Malaysia is one of the largest producers of agroindustrial wastewater known as Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME). POME is highly organic in content which is acidic, thick, dark in colour, with high levels of chemical oxygen demand, ammonical nitrogen, orthophosphate, nitrate, nitrite, total suspended solids, and total solids. Diagnosis of ovarian carcinoma is in urgent need for new complementary biomarkers for early stage detection. In order to find an alternative procedure to replace an uncomfortable conventional method in detecting cervical cancer, a proteomic approach in screening the urinary proteins were employed. Proteins that are aberrantly excreted in the urine of cancer patients are excellent biomarker candidates for development of new non-invasive protocol for early diagnosis and screening purposes.
