Effects Of Barley Diets With Distillers Grains Plus Solubles On Feedlot Performance And N And P Balance, Erin M. Hussey, Galen E. Erickson, Robert E. Peterson Peterson, Luis O. Burciaga-Robles
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Effects of barley starch:NDF ratio and DDGS inclusion on feedlot performance, carcass characteristics, and N and P mass balance were evaluated in a commercial feedyard in Alberta, Canada. Yearling heifers were assigned randomly at reimplant to four treatments (0 or 20% DDGS and LOW or HIGH starch:NDF barley). Feeding LOW starch:NDF barley improved feedlot performance and increased N retention. Feeding 20% DDGS increased DMI, had a slight negative impact on F:G, and increased N and P losses.

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Steers fed (0.6% BW) modified distillers grains plus solubles on the ground had increased ADG and BW at the end of summer grazing and were more profitable. Supplemented steers were fed 24 fewer days to reach feedlot harvest goal, had greater LM area, and lower marbling. Steers sorted on feedlot entry BW had increased HCW, marbling, and YG, but percentage overweight carcasses and profitability were similar. Steers supplemented during summer grazing had $11.80/ animal greater overall profit.

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Beef ribeye rolls, strip loins, and top sirloin butts were aged for 14 days and then blast or conventionally frozen and slow or fast thawed, or were fresh, never frozen and aged for 14 days or 21 days (n = 270). Thawing method affected purge loss and tenderness, and freezing method had a minimal effect. Neither freezing nor thawing methods had an effect on sensory tenderness, and minimal effects on the other sensory attributes. It is possible to freeze and thaw beef subprimals and for the meat to be comparable in tenderness and sensory attributes to fresh, never frozen meat.
Statistics Used In The Nebraska Beef Report And Their Purpose
Statistics Used In The Nebraska Beef Report And Their Purpose
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
The purpose of beef cattle and beef product research at UNL is to provide reference information that represents the various populations (cows, calves, heifers, feeders, carcasses, retail products, etc.) of beef production. Obviously, researchers cannot apply treatments to every member of a population; therefore, they must sample the population. The use of statistics allows researchers and readers of the Nebraska Beef Report the opportunity to evaluate separation of random (chance) occurrences and real biological effects of a treatment. Following is a brief description of the major statistics used in the beef report. For a more detailed description of the expectations …

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) acquire brain signals, analyze them, and translate them into commands that are relayed to output devices that carry out desired actions. BCIs do not use normal neuromuscular output pathways. The main goal of BCI is to replace or restore useful function to people disabled by neuromuscular disorders such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, cerebral palsy, stroke, or spinal cord injury. From initial demonstrations of electroenceph-alography-based spelling and single-neuron-based device control, researchers have gone on to use electroenceph-alographic, intracortical, electrocorticographic, and other brain signals for increasingly complex control of cursors, robotic arms, prostheses, wheelchairs, and other devices. Brain-computer interfaces …
Geometrical And Electronic Structure Of Metal Oxide Nanoparticles On Silica And Alumina, Udaya Indike Rodrigo
Geometrical And Electronic Structure Of Metal Oxide Nanoparticles On Silica And Alumina, Udaya Indike Rodrigo
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Recent studies demonstrated nanometer-scale combustion-generated nanoparticles cause demonstrable health effects. It is essential to understand the chemical characteristics of these nanoparticles. Since combustion-generated nanoparticles arise in complex mixtures, we employed a dendrimeric method to generate simpler, more reproducible nanoparticles, which were tethered to fumed silica and alumina to provide surrogates for fly ash. We collected XANES and EXAFS data, which are useful for characterizing disordered mixtures where the metal is a minor component. The effect of particle size on structural properties was studied with copper oxide nanoparticles on fumed silica. XANES data demonstrated copper atoms in the nanoparticles are present …
Nitrogen And Carbon Export To The Gulf Of Mexico By The Atchafalaya River, A Major Distributary Of The Mississippi River, April Elizabeth Bryantmason
Nitrogen And Carbon Export To The Gulf Of Mexico By The Atchafalaya River, A Major Distributary Of The Mississippi River, April Elizabeth Bryantmason
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Summer hypoxia in the Northern Gulf of Mexico has been attributed to large nutrient inputs, especially nitrate-nitrogen, from the Mississippi-Atchafalaya River system. The 2008 Gulf Hypoxia Action Plan calls for river corridor wetland restoration to reduce nitrate loads, but it is largely unknown how effective riverine wetland systems in the lower Mississippi River (MR) are for nitrate removal. This dissertation research examined nitrate and carbon export from the Atchafalaya River (AR) to: (1) determine nitrate processing by a river swamp basin under varied seasons, (2) investigate nitrate retention and processing in the AR during a major flood event, and (3) …

Visualization Of Time-Varying Data From Atomistic Simulations And Computational Fluid Dynamics, Bidur Bohara
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Time-varying data from simulations of dynamical systems are rich in spatio-temporal information. A key challenge is how to analyze such data for extracting useful information from the data and displaying spatially evolving features in the space-time domain of interest. We develop/implement multiple approaches toward visualization-based analysis of time-varying data obtained from two common types of dynamical simulations: molecular dynamics (MD) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). We also make application case studies. Parallel first-principles molecular dynamics simulations produce massive amounts of time-varying three-dimensional scattered data representing atomic (molecular) configurations for material system being simulated. Rendering the atomic position-time series along with …

Evaluation Of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms Associated With Fertility And Production Traits In Holstein And Multi-Generational Angus Females, Rebecca Ann Hill
Evaluation Of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms Associated With Fertility And Production Traits In Holstein And Multi-Generational Angus Females, Rebecca Ann Hill
LSU Master's Theses
The objective of this study was to test the association of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with fertility in two populations consisting of Holstein cows and multi-generational Angus cows. The candidate gene approach was utilized and previously described SNPs were tested for possible associations with fertility. Single nucleotide polymorphisms on three genes were evaluated including leptin receptor LEPR, calpastatin CAST, and DGAT1. Fertility traits were evaluated in conjunction with production traits for Holstein females and growth traits for Angus females. One SNP was significantly associated with birth weight (P < 0.05) in Angus females while a trend (P < 0.10) was observed for two markers influencing birth weight performance and three markers influencing weaning weight performance. An association of two SNP for birth weight and back fat thickness in Angus females was identified.!A trend (P < 0.10) was observed for one marker within LEPR influencing average services to conception, two markers within CAST influencing average days open, two markers within CAST and one marker within DGAT1 influencing average protein production, and one marker within CAST and one marker within DGAT1 influencing average milk production. One SNP within LEPR was significantly associated with average milk production (P < 0.05) in Holstein females. An association of one SNP within CAST and one SNP within DGAT1 for average protein production and average milk production in Holstein females was identified. An association of one SNP within CAST for average days open and average protein production in Holstein females was also identified. The association of these markers indicates that the evaluated quantitative trait loci (QTL) region may harbor causative mutations responsible for the variation observed in fertility and production traits. Further evaluation of SNP in these regions is necessary in order to identify mutations accounting for the largest degree of variation for fertility and production traits.
The Solo String Works Of J. S. Bach: The Relationship Between Dance And Musical Elements, Chung-Hui Hsu
The Solo String Works Of J. S. Bach: The Relationship Between Dance And Musical Elements, Chung-Hui Hsu
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In 1685, the Doge of Genoa made a visit to the French court and asked Louis XIV to host a ball. Louis XIV responded affirmatively and arranged a magnificent dance in his private apartment. The type of dance that took place was a kind of social dancing which later became the standard included Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, Gigue, Minuet, Gavotte, Bourée, Loure and Chaconne. These dances were called theatrical dances when they were used in theatrical production by professional dancers. During this period, the relationship between composer and choreographer was sometimes inseparable. Maestro Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632-1687) and his well-known choreographer Pierre …
Understanding Public Perceptions Of Global Warming, Wanyun Shao
Understanding Public Perceptions Of Global Warming, Wanyun Shao
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In this dissertation, I investigate the determinants on Americans’ perceptions of global warming and individuals’ environmentally significant behaviors to reduce global warming. Specially, I examine how contextual variables, primarily represented by local weather and climate, attitudinal variables, and socio-demographic characteristics affect public opinion towards global warming, personal voluntary actions and willingness to address global warming. The research of this dissertation reveals some important findings. First, local weather and climate—represented by long-term temperature trends—is found to have significant effects on public perceptions of global warming and private-sector environmentally significant behaviors. In particular, the summer temperature trend over the past 10 years …

Perturbing Microtubule Integrity Blocks Amp-Activated Protein Kinase-Induced Meiotic Resumption In Cultured Mouse Oocytes, Ru Ya, Stephen M. Downs
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
The oocyte meiotic spindle is comprised of microtubules (MT) that bind chromatin and regulate both metaphase plate formation and karyokinesis during meiotic maturation; however, little information is known about their role in meiosis reinitiation. This study was conducted to determine if microtubule integrity is required for meiotic induction and to ascertain how it affects activation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), an important participant in the meiotic induction process. Treatment with microtubule-disrupting agents nocodazole and vinblastine suppressed meiotic resumption in a dose-dependent manner in both arrested cumulus cell-enclosed oocytes (CEO) stimulated with follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and arrested denuded oocytes (DO) stimulated …

Influx of calcium through voltage-dependent channels regulates processes throughout the nervous system. Specifically, influx through L-type channels plays a variety of roles in early neuronal development and is commonly modulated by G-protein-coupled receptors such as GABAB receptors. Of the four isoforms of L-type channels, only Cav1.2 and Cav1.3 are predominately expressed in the nervous system. Both isoforms are inhibited by the same pharmacological agents, so it has been difficult to determine the role of specific isoforms in physiological processes. In the present study, Western blot analysis and confocal microscopy were utilized to study developmental expression …

Red Swamp Crayfish Procambarus Clarkii In The Atchafalaya River Basin: Biotic And Abiotic Effects On Population Dynamics And Physiological Biomarkers Of Hypoxic Stress, Christopher Paul Bonvillain
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Crayfish harvested from the Atchafalaya River Basin (ARB) represent the majority of Louisiana wild crayfish landings. However, excluding water level influences, it is difficult to elucidate inter-annual harvest differences and intra-annual population variability among habitats. This research investigated ecological influences on population characteristics of red swamp crayfish Procambarus clarkii in the southeastern ARB as well as physiological biomarkers of hypoxic stress in P. clarkii. Biotic and abiotic effects on P. clarkii populations were examined throughout the 2008 and 2009 commercial crayfish seasons. P. clarkii catch per unit effort (CPUE) at sampling locations increased nearly 600% between sample years despite similar …
Hijos De La Decadencia: Transgressive Representations Of Gender In The Works Of Emilia Pardo Bazán, Sarah Berard
Hijos De La Decadencia: Transgressive Representations Of Gender In The Works Of Emilia Pardo Bazán, Sarah Berard
LSU Master's Theses
This thesis explores the transgressive representations of gender in the works of Emilia Pardo Bazán. In her short story “Cuento primitivo” (1893) and her novels Memorias de un solterón (1896), La quimera (1905), and Dulce dueño (1911), the myths and images that surround the figures of New Woman, femme fatales, and dandies expose the fear fin de siècle Spanish society felt toward these models that did not conform to the gender stereotypes expected of them. Their straying from the established norm was seen as the symptom of decadence and the herald of the destruction of the race. Each of the …
Soil Climate And Pedology Of The Transylvanian Plain, Romania, Beatrix Haggard
Soil Climate And Pedology Of The Transylvanian Plain, Romania, Beatrix Haggard
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The Transylvanian Plain (TP) is a 395,000 ha region located in north-central Romania and is an area of agronomic importance in the region. The TP is characterized by hilly terrain, dissected by the Someş and Mureş Rivers. The terrain creates a unique situation when assessing pedology and soil temperature. Soils can change quickly across the landscape in the TP due to the terrain. To account for these differences, soil temperature was measured to predict soil temperatures as well as to evaluate growing conditions. Twenty stations were installed for a long-term temperature and pedology study. Pedons were described for morphological characterization …
Bird Ecology And Conservation In Peru's High Andean Petlands, Richard Edward Gibbons
Bird Ecology And Conservation In Peru's High Andean Petlands, Richard Edward Gibbons
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
High in the Andes, a unique peatland habitat exists precariously above the frostline and below snowline. These “bofedales”, as they are called in Peru, support an extraordinary avifauna consisting of both boreal and austral migratory species and residents. This ecosystem is predicted to be significantly reduced as a result of global climate change. We endeavored to understand the habitat associations and seasonality of the avian assemblage occurring in these permanent wetlands. Numerous detections of species outside of their documented geographic range provided an opportunity to assess geographic ranges using niche modeling. This novel approach provided insights and inferences for assessing …

Investigations Into The Role Of Humic Acid In Biomembrane Permeability And The Effects Of Naturally Formed Gold And Silver Nanoparticles On These Interactions, Loice Marklyne Ojwang
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The mechanism and kinetics of the interaction of humic acids (HAs) with a 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-Sn-glycero-3-phosphatidylcholine (POPC) large unilamellar vesicle (LUV) model biomembrane system were studied by fluorescence spectroscopy. All three HAs studied induced a perturbation to the biomembrane bilayer structure at pH 4.8. Concentration dependence studies revealed that biomembrane perturbation increased with increasing HA concentrations for Suwannee River HA (SWHA) from 0 to 20 mg C/L. For both Leonardite HA (LAHA) and Florida Peat HA (FPHA) aggregation influenced biomembrane perturbation at concentrations above 5 and 7.5 mg C/L, respectively. Temperature studies over the environmentally relevant ranges of 10 to 30 °C …

Evaluation Of Methods For Suppressing Estrus And Ovulation In Mares: Sustained Release Injections Of Altrenogest Versus Deslorelin Acetate, Thomas J. Stevens
LSU Master's Theses
Two experiments assessed the potential of altrenogest, an artificial progestogen, and deslorelin acetate, a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist, for suppressing estrus and ovulation in cyclic mares. In the first experiment, mares were administered a luteolytic dose of prostaglandin-F2á on d 6 of diestrus, and were then treated with 1 of 3 formulations of altrenogest in slow-release vehicle (6 mares/group): 1) Biorelease altrenogest LA150 (225 mg total as a 1.5 mL injection); 2) Biorelease altrenogest LA225 (225 mg total as a 1.0 mL injection); or 3) Biorelease altrenogest LA225 (450 mg total as a 2.0 mL injection). Six control mares received …
Virgil's Shipwreck: How A Roman Poet Made And Unmade The Epic In The West, Jesse Bryan Burchfield Russell
Virgil's Shipwreck: How A Roman Poet Made And Unmade The Epic In The West, Jesse Bryan Burchfield Russell
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
We are still feeling the effects of the Second World War sixty-seven years after its conclusion. Much of post-war thinking has attempted to sort through the roots of the totalitarian ideology that developed in Europe and caused such massive destruction. Marxist and Frankfurt School critics have demonstrated that the roots of Fascism go deeper in the West than the twentieth century and are part and parcel of the West’s combination of technology and myth. Additionally, Post-Colonial critics have pointed out that the horrors of this war were also perpetrated throughout Europe’s colonial endeavors and have undertaken the task of deconstructing …
A Comparison Of Response-Contingent And Noncontingent Pairing In The Conditioning Of A Reinforcer, Sarah Joanne Miller
A Comparison Of Response-Contingent And Noncontingent Pairing In The Conditioning Of A Reinforcer, Sarah Joanne Miller
LSU Master's Theses
Two pairing procedures were compared in the conditioning of a secondary reinforcer. Pairings of a neutral stimulus and primary reinforcer were delivered either contingent upon a participant response or noncontingently (i.e., independent of a participant response). Maintenance of responding when responses resulted in the neutral stimulus alone was compared before and throughout pairing using progressive-ratio probes. Results yielded undifferentiated responding between the contingently-paired and noncontingently-paired stimuli and a stimulus never paired with reinforcement, indicating that no conditioning effect occurred. Potential factors in producing this lack of differentiation are discussed, including differences in methodology between this study and past studies.

A Critical Ethnography Of The Myrtles Plantation In St. Francisville, Louisiana With Ruminations On Hauntology, Holley Ann Vaughn
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This study examines how ghosts perform and are performed in southern Louisiana, particularly in the eclectic Baton Rouge enclave of Spanish Town and at The Myrtles Plantation in St. Francisville. Although The Myrtles, considered “one of the most haunted locations in the United States,” served as the genesis for this project, I explore the continuities and discontinuities of the histories and historicities of these two distinct places and my journeys between them over a five year period. Using critical ethnography as a grounding framework, the study draws from literature in tourism studies, performance studies, and other related areas of research, …
Essential Role Of Monocyte Chemoattractant Protein-1 In Gram-Negative Bacterial Pneumonia, Gayathriy Balamayooran
Essential Role Of Monocyte Chemoattractant Protein-1 In Gram-Negative Bacterial Pneumonia, Gayathriy Balamayooran
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Acute gram-negative bacterial infections are a leading cause of mortality among the nosocomial infections. Increasing numbers of immunosuppressed individuals and growing numbers of antibiotic resistant strains make antibiotic treatment difficult. Neutrophils are the first cells recruited to the site of infection and are critical players in the host defense against gram-negative bacterial pneumonia. Therefore, identification of targets that boost neutrophil-associated host defense in the lung is essential in designing better therapies to control pulmonary infections. Production of chemokines is an important step for neutrophil recruitment. Monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) is a chemokine that is important for monocyte and T-lymphocyte influx. …
Insights Into The Catalytic Mechanisms Of The Protein Enzymes, Pfkfb3 And Vlde, Using X-Ray Crystallography, Michael Christopher Cavalier
Insights Into The Catalytic Mechanisms Of The Protein Enzymes, Pfkfb3 And Vlde, Using X-Ray Crystallography, Michael Christopher Cavalier
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This work describes the crystallographic studies of two enzymes and provides mechanistic insights into their respective catalytic processes. The first study investigates the molecular basis of the fructose-2,6-bisphosphatase reaction of the inducible isoform of the bifunctional enzyme, 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase/fructose-2,6-bisphosphatase (PFKFB3). The bifunctional enzyme is solely responsible for the cellular concentration of a regulator of glucose metabolism, fructose-2,6-bisphosphate. PFKB3 was investigated using the crystal structures of the enzyme in a phospho-enzyme intermediate state (PFKFB3-P•F-6-P), in a transition state-analogous complex (PFKFB3•AlF4), and in a complex with pyrophosphate (PFKFB3•PPi). With these structures, the structures of the Michaelis complex and the transition state were extrapolated. …
