Habitat Use, Movements, And Ecology Of Female Mottled Ducks On The Gulf Coast Of Louisiana And Texas, Bruce Edward Davis Jan 2012

Habitat Use, Movements, And Ecology Of Female Mottled Ducks On The Gulf Coast Of Louisiana And Texas, Bruce Edward Davis

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Mottled ducks (Anas fulvigula) are the most abundant breeding waterfowl in the coastal marshes of Louisiana and Texas. Mottled ducks are non-migratory and heavily dependent on coastal marsh habitats; they must satisfy all of their annual resource needs from within the Gulf Coast region. Coastal marsh habitats are being rapidly lost or degraded in Louisiana and Texas. The hydrology of many coastal marsh habitats has been altered by anthropogenic activity and natural factors. Parameters related to Mottled Duck habitat use and movements in this altered environment are poorly understood, and managers need information on vital rates of Mottled Ducks in …

Projected Performances: The Phenomenology Of Hybrid Theater, David Edward Coley Jan 2012

Projected Performances: The Phenomenology Of Hybrid Theater, David Edward Coley

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Throughout the 20th century, mediatized forms gained prominence and eclipsed the theater as a site of cultural power and popularity. Because of this tension, performance theorists like Peggy Phelan framed the definition of theater through its inherent differences from film and television. Other theorists like Philip Auslander problematized this distinction, particularly due to television’s similarities to live performance. The cinema, however, has remained an opponent to performance, ignored in favor of technologies that more readily promote a sense of “liveness.” In Projected Performances, I argue that film projection is more closely related to performance than previously thought, particularly when viewed …

Invasion Of Smooth Brome Into North American Tall-Grass Prairies: Impact On Native Plant/Herbivore Species And Mechanisms Responsible For Successful Invasion, Forrest Paul Dillemuth Jan 2012

Invasion Of Smooth Brome Into North American Tall-Grass Prairies: Impact On Native Plant/Herbivore Species And Mechanisms Responsible For Successful Invasion, Forrest Paul Dillemuth

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Research in invasion ecology has focused on developing ecological theory that can predict how invasive species interact with invaded communities. However, empirical support for theoretical predictions has been inconsistent. Inconsistencies may be attributed to the lack of data in three core areas; (1) field data with enough resolution to determine population dynamics of invasive species in relation to native species, (2) manipulative field experiments that encapsulate natural variation found among micro-habitats, and (3) field data that incorporate effects of invasive species within and among spatial scales. This dissertation has addressed these concerns by examining the mechanisms responsible for the successful …

A Novel Immunomodulatory Subunit Vaccine To Combat The Involvement Of Bovine Respiratory Coronavirus Infections In Shipping Fever, Genevieve Elizabeth Lum Jan 2012

A Novel Immunomodulatory Subunit Vaccine To Combat The Involvement Of Bovine Respiratory Coronavirus Infections In Shipping Fever, Genevieve Elizabeth Lum

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Bovine respiratory coronavirus (BRCoV) is a group 2a coronavirus expressing both hemagglutinin-esterase and spike (S) envelope glycoproteins. The S glycoprotein is a primary coronavirus virulence factor responsible for both receptor specificity and membrane fusion-mediated entry into host cells. In addition, the S glycoprotein serves as a major antigen targeted by both the cellular and humoral immune responses and, as such, is an important target for antibody-facilitated virus neutralization. The objective of this research was the design of a safe and effective vaccine against BRCoV using a “prime-boost” vaccination approach. This method utilized an initial DNA vaccine encoding either the soluble …

A Novel Qos-Aware Mpeg-4 Video Delivery Algorithm Over The Lossy Ieee 802.11 Wlans To Improve The Video Quality, Tanmoy Debnath Jan 2012

A Novel Qos-Aware Mpeg-4 Video Delivery Algorithm Over The Lossy Ieee 802.11 Wlans To Improve The Video Quality, Tanmoy Debnath

Doctoral

Video traffic is bursty in nature and has different network requirements compared to other types of traffic (e.g. voice, data) in terms of bandwidth, delay, jitter, and loss etc. So it becomes important to manage video traffic on a WLAN carefully to achieve acceptable levels of Quality of Service (QoS). The unique contribution of this work is that it presents experimental and simulation studies of the performance of real video content streamed over WLAN networks. Under various test scenarios the performance of the WLAN network in terms of delay, loss, throughput etc. is analysed in the presence of background traffic. …

Food Cravings And Food Cue Responding Across The Menstrual Cycle, Megan Apperson Mcvay Jan 2012

Food Cravings And Food Cue Responding Across The Menstrual Cycle, Megan Apperson Mcvay

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Food cravings have been linked to obesity and eating disorders. Women report craving food more than men, and women experience greater rates of obesity and eating disorders. Retrospective and quasi-prospective studies have suggested that food cravings may be more common during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. Unfortunately, these studies have been limited by the use of poorly defined menstrual cycle phases, disregard for individual differences in menstrual cycle length, and absence of validated measures of cravings. The current study examined the effects of menstrual cycle phase on 1) cravings in response to a high fat/high sugar chocolate candy …

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

back on the scope of patent subject matter in Prometheus, while according Congress great latitude in extending copyright protection in Golan. Prometheus was one of a number of cases in which the concept of functionality cut across the various areas of intellectual property. Prometheus cut back on patents on innovations that were not sufficiently functional, because they effectively claimed a law of nature. The Federal Circuit, in Myriad Genetics, by contrast, held isolated genes patentable (and the Supreme Court has decided to hear that case). The strongest rationale may be that isolated genes play different functions than their counterpart in …

Metaphors, Models, And Meaning In Contract Law, Jeffrey M. Lipshaw Jan 2012

Metaphors, Models, And Meaning In Contract Law, Jeffrey M. Lipshaw

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

Why does there seem to be such a wide gap between the subject matter of the usual first-year contracts course and what practitioners (particularly transactional lawyers) actually experience? This article is an attempt to bridge the gap, combining insights from academic theory and real-world law practice. My claim is that the law as discipline has developed its own powerful but self-contained conceptual framework — in the coinage of one noted scholar, “an epistemic trap.” The subject matter of contract law, something that is largely the creation of private parties and not the state, requires dealing with legal truth not just …

Koutango: Under Reported Arboviral Disease In West Africa, Jaime Matias De Araujo Lobo Jan 2012

Koutango: Under Reported Arboviral Disease In West Africa, Jaime Matias De Araujo Lobo

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) are among the most common agents of human febrile illnesses worldwide. As crucially important emerging pathogens, they have caused multiple, notable epidemics of human disease and unnoticed epizootics over recent decades. Despite the public health relevance, very little is known about the geographic distribution of the agents and vectors, relative impact, and risk factors associated to the arboviral infection in many regions of the world and in the tropics in particular. Presented in this dissertation is an experimental study that explores the serology screening of serum samples from 151 patients whom were diagnosed with undifferentiated febrile illness …

Diet And Reproductive Biology Of The Blacknose Shark (Carcharhinus Acronotus) From The Southwestern Atlantic Ocean, Ryan Michael Ford Jan 2012

Diet And Reproductive Biology Of The Blacknose Shark (Carcharhinus Acronotus) From The Southwestern Atlantic Ocean, Ryan Michael Ford

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The blacknose shark (Carcharhinus acronotus) is a common small coastal shark species found in nearshore waters along the southeast coast of the United States, from North Carolina into the Gulf of Mexico and extending further south into the Bahamas. There has been some debate in recent years over the reproductive periodicity of C. acronotus in waters off the U.S. coast. Earlier studies have suggested that Gulf C. acronotus reproduce on an annual basis whereas the Atlantic populations of this species may reproduce biennially. Additionally, there have been no known studies on the diet of C. acronotus. The goal of the …

Online Aggression : The Influences Of Anonymity And Social Modeling, Adam G. Zimmerman Jan 2012

Online Aggression : The Influences Of Anonymity And Social Modeling, Adam G. Zimmerman

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Behavioral temptation to aggress and participant blog responses following a group word unscrambling game were examined in situations of anonymity and positive or negative social modeling. Anonymous participants were more aggressive than non-anonymous participants. Also, social modeling seemed to moderate the effect of anonymity on behavioral temptation to aggress as well as verbal aggression via blog posts. Specifically, anonymous participants responded more aggressively when they viewed aggressive models following failure in a team word unscrambling game. These findings suggest that although anonymity may increase the likelihood that individuals will aggress, social modeling may influence aggressive outcomes.

Demography And Reproductive Biology Of The Gopher Tortoise (Gopherus Polyphemus) Population At White Oak Plantation, Nassau County, Florida, Julia Rachel Smith

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The demography and reproductive biology of the gopher tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus) was studied for two years at White Oak Plantation (WOP), located in northeast Florida along the St. Mary’s river. Two sub‐populations were studied in regions I referred to as Site A and Site B. I located 312 burrows and captured 109 different tortoises, either by hand or using bucket traps. Tortoise density was 4.48/ha at Site A and only 1.15/ha at Site B. Juveniles were the most abundant age class overall, while hatchlings were numerous at Site A but virtually absent at Site B. The combined sex ratio for …

Isolation And Characterization Of Adult Progenitor Cells From Healthy And Laminitic Hoof Tissue, Vanessa Pinto Jan 2012

Isolation And Characterization Of Adult Progenitor Cells From Healthy And Laminitic Hoof Tissue, Vanessa Pinto

LSU Master's Theses

Laminitis is an often fatal condition in horses with few available and only moderately effective treatment options. Separation of laminar dermis and epidermis lead to rotation or ventral deviation of the third phalanx inside the hoof capsule. Despite being a modified skin, equine laminar tissue does not completely return to normal after laminitis. The hypothesis tested was that adult progenitor cells in the equine laminar tissue are irreversibly damaged by laminitis. A method to harvest and culture cells in vitro from the equine lamina was established; and progenitor cells from unaffected and laminitic hooves were characterized and compared. Laminar tissue …

Constructing Wilderness: The Nexus Of Preservation And Ocean-Space In The United States, Ryan Orgera Jan 2012

Constructing Wilderness: The Nexus Of Preservation And Ocean-Space In The United States, Ryan Orgera

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The ocean has long played a minor role in human geography; imagining it as natural space rather than an extractive space even less significant. This dissertation explores the most revered kind of American nature preservation: wilderness. Despite the millions of acres set aside as wilderness in the United States, no such designation exists for ocean-space as a discrete entity. Through the analysis of congressional hearings, bills, resolutions, public laws, and maps, this dissertation uncovers the complex constructs of the production of legal wilderness. Furthermore, it uncovers a novel vein of inquiry, that of the ocean as a preserved natural space. …

Effects Of Fire And Treefalls On Japanese Climbing Fern And Native Species Groundcover In A Restored Longleaf Pine Savanna, Becky Jolene Carmichael Jan 2012

Effects Of Fire And Treefalls On Japanese Climbing Fern And Native Species Groundcover In A Restored Longleaf Pine Savanna, Becky Jolene Carmichael

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Recurrent disturbances play an important role in maintaining longleaf pine savannas. Windstorms and fires contribute to the heterogeneity of pine savanna understory through generation of canopy gaps and fuel accumulation, distribution and consumption. The combination of windstorms and fires promotes native herbaceous species, but also promotes invasion of Japanese climbing fern (Lygodium japonicum). Lygodium japonicum is an invasive fern with subterranean rhizomes and copious spore production invading pine savannas along the southeastern Gulf Coast Region. This dissertation examines how fire, previous windstorm disturbances, and animal disruptions influence L. japonicum and native species abundance in a restored longleaf pine savanna. Studies …

‘From S.A. To L.A.’: Branding Transport And Circulating Celebrity In South Africa’S Nonhle Goes To Hollywood, Brandeise Monk-Payton

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

How do local stars navigate global itineraries? This article analyzes black South African celebrity Nonhle Thema and the (dis)continuous flow of her transnational brand. Thema’s individual star image is predicated on her work as a television personality and entertainment news journalist who traverses across global markets in order to bring external (particularly U.S.) star visibility to a South African audience. Thema’s position as a conduit for the circulation of celebrity between South Africa and the world-at-large is made more complex when she becomes the subject of this transport in her original reality series Nonhle Goes to Hollywood (2011). As the …

A Hospital For Maine: Part 1- The Rise Of Maine General Hospital, Maine Medical Center Jan 2012

A Hospital For Maine: Part 1- The Rise Of Maine General Hospital, Maine Medical Center

Histories

Part One: The story of Maine Medical Center is rooted in Victorian America and owes much to the social conscience of the times. Great changes were taking place in the years preceding the construction of Maine’s first general hospital. Industrialization, European immigration, breakthroughs in medical science, new public health policies, and the Civil War formed the crucible out of which it emerged. Only 100 years before, such an institution would have been virtually unimaginable.

Time To Cut The Fat: The Case For Government Anti-Obesity Legislation , Stephen A. Mcguinness Jan 2012

Time To Cut The Fat: The Case For Government Anti-Obesity Legislation , Stephen A. Mcguinness

Journal of Law and Health

This Article examines—and ultimately rejects—this anti-paternalism argument against government anti-obesity policies. It argues that government intervention in the food industry for the purpose of stemming the American obesity epidemic is justified and survives paternalistic objections to the contrary. This Article begins by briefly outlining the nature, severity, and causes of the obesity epidemic. It considers what can be done about the problem, finding that only government intervention is capable of effectively combating the crisis. It also outlines several types of potentially successful government anti-obesity strategies. Finally, it considers the primary topic of this Article: whether government anti-obesity policies constitute unjustified …

Agricultural Terracing And Landscape History At Monte Pallano, Abruzzo, Italy, James R. Countryman Jan 2012

Agricultural Terracing And Landscape History At Monte Pallano, Abruzzo, Italy, James R. Countryman

Honors Papers

This study examines the role of agricultural terracing in the archaeological landscape of Monte Pallano, in the Sangro river valley of Abruzzo, Italy. This area is the research focus of the Sangro Valley Project, an ongoing archaeological project whose mission is to investigate and characterize long-term dynamics of human settlement and land use in this region. The project's 2010 and 2011 field seasons incorporated a program of mapping and reconnaissance survey and experimental excavation of abandoned agricultural terraces on the upper slopes of Monte Pallano. The survey was designed to assess the spatial distribution of agricultural terraces in the study …

Hannah Arendt And The Meaning Of Political Action, Charlie Hartford Jan 2012

Hannah Arendt And The Meaning Of Political Action, Charlie Hartford

Honors Papers

In the first section, I begin with an account of action within the context of the vita activa as laid out by Arendt in The Human Condition. I then proceed to identify some of the more perplexing features of her account, and suggest that they are confounding enough to throw the coherency of what Arendt is saying into question. Taking my cue from Hanna Pitkin, I then argue that we can understand action as activity informed by thinking, by drawing upon Arendt's posthumously published work The Life of the Mind. This account, however, though illuminating with regard to some aspects …

Archaeometric Characterization Of Roman Tile Fabrics From The Sangro Valley, Italy, Aaron Eli Goldberg Jan 2012

Archaeometric Characterization Of Roman Tile Fabrics From The Sangro Valley, Italy, Aaron Eli Goldberg

Honors Papers

In this paper, I use archaeometric methods to investigate the raw materials and manufacture of terracotta roof tiles from three Roman sites in the Sangro Valley, Abruzzo, Italy. Although fragmentary remains of the tegula and imbrex roof system are commonly uncovered at sites throughout the ancient world, these tiles are woefully understudied. Equally obscure are the workings of the economy of Samnium during and after its conquest by the Romans. As mass-produced industrial materials generally manufactured and used within a small radius, tiles may prove to be the ideal medium through which to explore the regional ceramic economy. This study …

Rustbelt Theater: Children's Environmental Justice Narratives From South Elyria, Oh, Lissette Lorenz Jan 2012

Rustbelt Theater: Children's Environmental Justice Narratives From South Elyria, Oh, Lissette Lorenz

Honors Papers

Children's knowledge of their eco-social environment is rarely privileged in environmental literature. Their voices help to broaden conceptions of environmental justice, to the benefit of both the environmental justice movement and the emerging discipline of environmental studies. In this community-based research project conducted in partnership with Save Our Children, an afterschool/summer enrichment center, in South Elyria, Ohio, third and fourth grade children utilized Theater of the Oppressed techniques to create an environmental justice narrative in the form of an original play. The goal of Theater of the Oppressed is for participants to dramatically analyze real-life oppressions/obstacles/challenges they face and act …

The Effects Of Formal Group And Extracurricular Involvement On College Students’ Self-Esteem, Ramona Catherine Negroponte Jan 2012

The Effects Of Formal Group And Extracurricular Involvement On College Students’ Self-Esteem, Ramona Catherine Negroponte

Honors Papers

The purpose of this study was to understand the impact of college students' engagement in formal group activities on self-esteem levels. Youth and adolescent extracurricular involvement was also taken into account to help determine influence on college participation. Hypotheses suggested that group affiliation would positively affect self-esteem and that extracurricularly motivated children would be more likely to join formal activities in college. A sample of 149 Oberlin College students completed a survey that included the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and nine of these subjects were selected for in-depth interviews. Both quantitative and qualitative data results indicated that formal group members’ self-esteem …

We Are Not These Bodies: Identity And Transcendence Among American Devotees Of Krishna, Rachel Lynn Williams Jan 2012

We Are Not These Bodies: Identity And Transcendence Among American Devotees Of Krishna, Rachel Lynn Williams

Honors Papers

This paper discusses the ways in which American devotees of Krishna understand their identities. Some second-generation Asian Americans have criticized American Krishna devotees of cultural appropriation, but devotees defend themselves against this claim with a philosophy of bodily transcendence. Many devotees practice transcendence through a rejection of nationalism and sectarianism. The paper also considers vegetarianism and ISKCON's attitude toward animals.

A Poetics Of Space: Opening Up A World Through Vessel Metaphors In Modern And Contemporary Poetry, Lili Pariser Jan 2012

A Poetics Of Space: Opening Up A World Through Vessel Metaphors In Modern And Contemporary Poetry, Lili Pariser

Honors Papers

This project follows the strangely consistent fascination in modern and contemporary poetry with vessel objects. From Wallace Stevens' "jar [placed] in Tennessee," to "That vase" of Philip Larkin or James Merrill's "clear vase of dry leaves vibrating on and on," even so far back in literary history as the shapely "Grecian Urn" of John Keats' famous ode among numerous others, the genre is teeming with vessels. I argue that these kinds of objects open up distinctive possibilities for poetic exploration because of the unique way that they engage with space. Consequently, by using these objects as metaphors, poets are able …
