We Didn't Get Famous: The Story Of The Southern Music Underground, 1978-1990, Camilla Ann Aikin Jan 2012

We Didn't Get Famous: The Story Of The Southern Music Underground, 1978-1990, Camilla Ann Aikin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the emergence of the Southern indie music scene in the 1980s as both a rejection of the broader punk scene that had swept America and the UK in the 1970s and the blues and country inflected Southern Rock that preceded it in the 1970s. I first had the idea of doing a project on this musical era while I was living in New York City. I had loved the jangly sounds of 1980s Southern indie bands for a very long time, and I had just begun to develop a very deep interest and love of the South, …

Comparison Of Apple's Ios 5 And Android For Mobile Applications Development: A Developer's Perspective, Estela Pochintesta Jan 2012

Comparison Of Apple's Ios 5 And Android For Mobile Applications Development: A Developer's Perspective, Estela Pochintesta

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Body composition, or the proportion of fat, muscle, and bone of an individual's body, is an important indication of health status. Numerous techniques can be used to assess body composition, producing varied results and measurements. For individuals with insufficient or excessive amounts of body fat, accurate assessment of body composition is crucial. Two commonly used techniques for measuring body composition are air displacement plethysmography (adp) and dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (dxa). Past research has been conducted, comparing adp and dxa, but the results are inconsistent. The majority of past studies found that, when compared to dxa, adp underestimated body fat percentage, …

Clamor: Malefica, Protest, And The Occult Economy In Early Modern England, Charles Mock Jan 2012

Clamor: Malefica, Protest, And The Occult Economy In Early Modern England, Charles Mock

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis attempts to figure witchcraft practices within a larger economic context whereby cursing and maleficent acts in general might be read as a means of political protest against the political and economic destabilization of comrights. By reading cursing and prophecy as epistemological weaponry, the thesis establishes a theory of early modern terror that corresponds to the effects of these tactics on local and national levels. Readings of traditional witchcraft literature and Shakespeare's Macbeth will hopefully allow for an understanding of witchcraft that is heavily concerned over the nature of agency within the period, particularly with regard to the ways …

Bindweed And Fire, Joshua Lee Davis Jan 2012

Bindweed And Fire, Joshua Lee Davis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Bindweed and Fire is a collection of poems in three sections. The first two sections, Drought and Watermarks, contain short metrical lyrics built around images of fire and water. Sabbath, the third section is a long free-verse poetic sequence in three voices. In ekphrastic poems rich with private symbolism, the first voice attempts to refract through the prism of visual art the relationship between a father and son. Providing a counterpoint to the first, the second voice seeks to qualify, correct, and comment on the private symbolism. The third voice tries to give a wider view of the everyday lives …

Room Temperature Ionic Liquid (Rtil) Membranes For Bio-Methane Dehumidification, Ryan Amos Jan 2012

Room Temperature Ionic Liquid (Rtil) Membranes For Bio-Methane Dehumidification, Ryan Amos

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Renewable fuels are heavily researched due to the increasing price of and resulting pollution from fossil fuels. The production of useable energy from waste—animal, sewage, discarded food, landfill matter would be a valuable renewable fuel production method. Biogas is a renewable fuel that is produced by anaerobic digestion, composed mainly of methane, carbon dioxide and small percentages of hydrogen sulfide and water vapor. Before this biogas—predominately bio-methane—can be converted to fuel, it must be dehumidified to become useable. Typically membrane-based gas dehumidification uses hydrophilic polymer membrane materials, such as polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and cellulose acetate (CA). The main problems with polymer …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Nickel Complexes With Relevance To Nickel Acireductone Dioxygenase And Nickel Superoxide Dismutase, Margo Nicole Montgomery Jan 2012

Synthesis And Characterization Of Nickel Complexes With Relevance To Nickel Acireductone Dioxygenase And Nickel Superoxide Dismutase, Margo Nicole Montgomery

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research presents an investigation of synthetic model complexes with relevance to the active site of Ni(II) acireductone dioxygenase (Ni-ARD) and Ni(II) superoxide dismutase (Ni-SOD). Acireductone dioxygenases (ARDs) are a unique set of enzymes found in the methionine salvage pathway that catalyze the oxidation reaction of acireductone (1, 2-dihydroxy-3-oxo-5-(methylthio)pent-1-ene). These enzymes share a compolypeptide sequence but bind different metal ions, Ni2+ or Fe2+, at the active site. The Ni-ARD enzyme is responsible for the off pathway shunt in the pathway. Using the tridentate nitrogen donor ligands hydrotris(3,5-dimethyl-1-pyrazolyl)borate (Tp*) and the newly developed tris(1, 2-dimethyl-4-imadozyl)carbinol, (4-TICMe, Me) several reactions involving the …

Masculinity In Comparative Black Literatures, Latoya Renee Jefferson Jan 2012

Masculinity In Comparative Black Literatures, Latoya Renee Jefferson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This project examines the ways in which Black men in Africa and throughout the African Diaspora define themselves as gendered beings in their fiction and drama beginning with Richard Wright's publication of Native Son in 1940 to Mariama Ba's So Long a Letter published 1980. Black men created a transnational dialectic concerning their masculinity which involved the creation and criticism of several types of masculinity. In Chapters 1 and 2, I discuss the theoretical and the historical framework for this project. In Chapter 3, I discuss the first type of Black masculinity which was based in opposition to Euro-American stereotypes …

Functional Studies Of Novel Bioactives From Complex Host-Microbiomes As Drug Leads For Cancer, Infectious Disease, Depression And Pain, John Jason Bowling Jan 2012

Functional Studies Of Novel Bioactives From Complex Host-Microbiomes As Drug Leads For Cancer, Infectious Disease, Depression And Pain, John Jason Bowling

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The drug discovery process has become increasingly complex in comparison to early efforts particularly those involving diseases or conditions that affect large numbers of the human population. It is difficult to point directly to one factor leading evolution of the process but the definition of a mechanism of pharmacological action for a drug lead has noticeably become a higher priority. This evolution has helped diminish the stigma of natural products and compound supply issues. The issue of compound supply has also been addressed to some extent with the emergence of recombinant technologies and new synthetic methodology. With approximately 60 years …

Inspection Of Earthen Embankment Dams Using Time Lapse Electrical Resistivity Tomography, Jared Stewart Case Jan 2012

Inspection Of Earthen Embankment Dams Using Time Lapse Electrical Resistivity Tomography, Jared Stewart Case

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

According to the National Inventory of Dams (NID), the number of dams across the United States is approximately 85,000. Many of these dams are more than 50 years old and need vast attention to ensure their safety. It is difficult to obtain a full assessment of the dam just by visual inspections alone. This is because many problems associated with dam failure occur internally, which makes it difficult to be observed by the dam inspectors. Examples of these flaws are piping and seepage (flow of water through or around dam walls). It is in this area where geophysical methods can …

Between God And Man: Community's Place In Virtue, Practical Reason, And Transcendent Good, Jordan Herz Davis Jan 2012

Between God And Man: Community's Place In Virtue, Practical Reason, And Transcendent Good, Jordan Herz Davis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Talbot Brewer's Retrieval of Ethics and Robert Adams's Finite and Infinite Goods present distinct theories in ethics and metaethics. Brewer begins with the fundamental ethical perspective of the practical deliberator who experiences his practical deliberations as a continuous, unified, and constantly revised activity which begins with inchoate intimations of goodness and proceeds better or worse to understand and pursue the goodness which pervades his evaluative outlook. From this Brewer aims to account for how we achieve excellence in practical deliberation and arrive at a more tenable and self-consistent evaluative outlook which informs our ethical deliberations. Alternately, Adams begins in the …

Problems With Truth: Scope, Mixing, And Truth Pluralism, Christopher Dyer Jan 2012

Problems With Truth: Scope, Mixing, And Truth Pluralism, Christopher Dyer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this paper, I will be taking up the debate between monistic and pluralistic inflationary theories of truth. Truth monism claims that there is one explanatory story which accounts for the truth of all and only true propositions. There seem to be, however, certain domains of discourse wherein monistic theories fail. If monistic theories cannot provide an explanation for how all true propositions are true, then they would not be adequate theories of truth. Truth pluralism is motivated to avoid the scope problem. The pluralist sees that there are as many truth properties as there are domains of discourse. A …

The Art Of Going Beyond In Hossana, Ethiopia, Megan Elizabeth Flowers Jan 2012

The Art Of Going Beyond In Hossana, Ethiopia, Megan Elizabeth Flowers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this study, I examine what education as development means for the men and women who live in Hossana town, Ethiopia. The ethnographic focus of this study is on understanding how education as development evokes different meanings for socio-political participation by rural students at a teacher training college and townspeople respectively. I discuss these conceptual differentiations in relation to the changes in beliefs and strategies that have occurred in Hossana and greater Ethiopia elsewhere over the course of several decades of local and global changes in the social order. I use the emic category of yilhunnta, as the social recognition …

Synthesis And Evaluation Of Naturally Occuring Halogenated Bipyrroles In A Relevant Marine Species, Fundulus Heteroclitus, Kimberly Sheree Foster Jan 2012

Synthesis And Evaluation Of Naturally Occuring Halogenated Bipyrroles In A Relevant Marine Species, Fundulus Heteroclitus, Kimberly Sheree Foster

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Halogenated dimethyl-2-2'-bipyrroles (HDBPs) have recently been discovered in seabird eggs and have been shown to bioaccumulate in trophic organisms. HDBPs are suspected to be biogenic in nature, derived from evidence of marine natural products that are persistent in the environment and widespread in the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean. The HDBPs exhibit chlorinated and brominated substitution patterns that closely resemble anthropogenic pollutants like the polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). Environmental health concerns exists regarding these naturally occurring HDBPs because several of these analogs were shown to induce the cytochrome P4501A (CYP1A) gene through activation of …

Two Trains Running: Capture And Escape In The Racialized Train Cars Of The Jim Crow South, 1893-1930, Raleigh Mixon Robinson Jan 2012

Two Trains Running: Capture And Escape In The Racialized Train Cars Of The Jim Crow South, 1893-1930, Raleigh Mixon Robinson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The role of the railroad in the modern American experience—and its role in making that experience modern—cannot be overstated. This thesis proposes to tell one of many possible railroad stories. By focusing on the historical and cultural relevance of a series of bodies in transit, I examine the implementation of railroad segregation law and the response by African-American performers. The thesis begins at the end of the nineteenth century with the Homer Plessy test case and continues across three decades, meeting along the way novelists Charles Chesnutt and James Weldon Johnson and musicians W. C. Handy, Henry "Ragtime Texas" Thomas, …

Finite Element Modeling Of Seismic Wave Propagation In Earthen Embankments, Binyam Tadese Jan 2012

Finite Element Modeling Of Seismic Wave Propagation In Earthen Embankments, Binyam Tadese

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The detection of internal seepage zones in embankments (dams and levees) by geophysical seismic techniques such as seismic refraction is limited by a number of factors. Some factors are associated with inversion and smoothing problems during processing, while others are associated with the natural characteristics of embankments and seepage anomalies. In this research, changes in the seismic response associated with: embankment soil compositions and moisture, characteristics of the seepage zone, presence of water in the reservoir, and shape of embankment was studied via 2D and 3D finite element (FE) embankment models. Artificial reflections from external boundaries and numerical dispersion were …

The Effect Of Exercise On Mechanical Pressure Pain Threshold In The Presence And Absence Of Delayed-Onset Muscle Soreness, Brandon Tynes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Research has shown decreased pain sensitivity (hypoalgesia) during and following maximal and sub-maximal isometric exercise (Koltyn, 2002). Research on fibromyalgia patients however has shown the same exercises increase pain sensitivity (hyperalgesia) (Staud, Robinson, & Price, 2005; Kosek, Ekholm, & Hansson, 1996). The purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of exercise on pressure pain thresholds (PPT) in the presence and absence of delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) within the ipsilateral (contracting) and contralateral quadriceps muscle and plurisegmental finger. Data were collected using twenty-five male participants (aged 18-29) over five testing days: two days of familiarization, one day of …

Nothing Less Than An Activist: Marge Baroni, Catholicism, And The Natchez, Mississippi Civil Rights Movement, Eva Elizabeth Walton Jan 2012

Nothing Less Than An Activist: Marge Baroni, Catholicism, And The Natchez, Mississippi Civil Rights Movement, Eva Elizabeth Walton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a religious and social history of the life of Natchez, Mississippi Catholic activist Marjorie R. Baroni (1924-1986). The study examines Baroni's Catholic faith-driven activism as a counter-narrative to the dominant Protestant narratives of religious motivations in the greater civil rights movement. In analyzing Baroni's story as a lived theological drama, I offer Baroni as a vessel for studying often overlooked Catholic influences in the movement: (1) The activist Catholic faith promoted by Dorothy Day and the Catholic Worker Movement (2) The effects of the more inclusive decrees of the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) on the Catholic Church …

Isolation, Structure Elucidation And Biological Evaluation Of Natural Products From Plants And Fungi, Xiaoning Wang Jan 2012

Isolation, Structure Elucidation And Biological Evaluation Of Natural Products From Plants And Fungi, Xiaoning Wang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Natural products have provided considerable value for drug discovery over the past half-century. Nearly four fifth of drugs were natural products or inspired by natural compounds. Bioactive secondary metabolites isolated from natural source, either fungal or terrestrial, are relatively safer for human health and the environment and can serve as drug or as drug leads for the development of synthetic or semi-synthetic analogs. Natural products have also been successfully used in agriculture as plant growth regulators, signal transductions, fungicides, herbicides and tranquilizers. In our continued efforts to identify bioactive compounds, seventy-seven plant and fungal extracts were evaluated using a direct-bioautography …

Antileishmania Compounds From An Unidentified Endophytic Fungus And Biotransformation Of 5,7,2`,4`,5`-Pentahydroxyflavonol, Ahmed Idris

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Leishmaniasis is a parasitic disease remaining a major public health problem. It causes illness and death especially in developing countries. Comchemotherapeutic agents currently used are often inadequate, requiring long courses of parenteral administration, having toxic side effects or becoming less effective due to the emergence of resistant strains. Thus, there is an urgent need for new, effective, and inexpensive drugs. In the fight against leishmaniasis, natural products are important sources of novel therapeutic agents. The goal of our research is to study secondary metabolites from endophytic fungi as a source of effective antileishmanial agents. Many crude extracts from endophytic fungi …

A Profession, If You Can Keep It: How Information Technology And Fading Borders Are Reshaping The Law Marketplace And What We Should Do About It, Stephen Gillers Jan 2012

A Profession, If You Can Keep It: How Information Technology And Fading Borders Are Reshaping The Law Marketplace And What We Should Do About It, Stephen Gillers

Faculty Articles

Technology is changing the way we do business. It has made cross-border trade in goods and services easy. Capital is finding ways to profit from the law business. Lawyers strive to serve clients wherever they need help, including outside their jurisdiction of admission. These changes not only affect how American law firms work, they challenge our system for licensing and regulating lawyers. The traditional geocentric model for regulating the bar, based on physical place of practice, is unstable today because lawyers can practice physically in many places and (virtually) in every place, yet no place in particular. The next twenty …

The Natural Law Bridge Between Private Law And Public International Law, Richard A. Epstein Jan 2012

The Natural Law Bridge Between Private Law And Public International Law, Richard A. Epstein

Faculty Articles

One key similarity between natural law and international law is that they seek to obtain a stable social order without the intervention of any state authority capable of issuing and enforcing its commands to those subject to its rule. Among ordinary individuals in a state of nature that weakness tends to lead to a stripped-down libertarian regime that features simple rules of acquisition, contract, and protection. The system gains its relative stability from the brute fact that between rough equals the party in the defensive posture will win out, so that great disparities in power are needed to disrupt the …

The "Civil" Courts: The Case Of Same-Sex Marriage, Kenji Yoshino Jan 2012

The "Civil" Courts: The Case Of Same-Sex Marriage, Kenji Yoshino

Faculty Articles

This Essay argues that the embattled movement for civility in public discourse should direct its attention toward the perceived harms of civility, rather than the perceived harms of incivility. The alleged harms of civility include the views that civility harms adherents, that civility honors the dishonorable, and that civility impedes authentic engagement. Examining the case of same-sex marriage, this Essay shows that these perceived harms were surmounted in the counterintuitive context of civil litigation. It remains unclear whether the civility of the courts can be replicated in other forums. Nevertheless, this case study demonstrates that none of the harms associated …

Back To The Future: The Curious Case Of United States V. Jones, Erin E. Murphy Jan 2012

Back To The Future: The Curious Case Of United States V. Jones, Erin E. Murphy

Faculty Articles

Historically, the Supreme Court has couched the protections of the Fourth Amendment in the language of privacy and property. Yet expectations about freedom from government interference are no longer solely expressed in those terms. People routinely trade their privacy or property interests for complimentary e-mail services or faster toll crossings, and yet unfettered access to such information strikes many observers as contrary to the Fourth Amendment’s core values. If neither privacy nor property theories provide a constitutional basis for oversight, however, then what does? In Jones, the Justices were confronted with just this dilemma. In response, as this Essay will …

Establishing Official Islam? The Law And Strategy Of Counter-Radicalization, Samuel J. Rascoff Jan 2012

Establishing Official Islam? The Law And Strategy Of Counter-Radicalization, Samuel J. Rascoff

Faculty Articles

In the name of national security, federal and local governments have begun to intervene domestically in the religious lives of Muslims and into Islam itself. Taken together, these interventions form part of the emerging strategy of counterradicalization, by which officials aim to diminish the pull of radical Islamic ideology in part by promoting more “mainstream” theological alternatives. Both the official opposition to radical Islam (as opposed to the violence that it is thought to generate) and the support for more palatable (to the state, that is) religious alternatives generate friction with the Establishment Clause and the values that it enshrines. …

From Pond To Pump: Microalgae As A Feedstock For Biodiesel, Anna H. Leavitt Jan 2012

From Pond To Pump: Microalgae As A Feedstock For Biodiesel, Anna H. Leavitt

Honors Theses

The global reliance on fossil fuels is an unsustainable practice that has led to the depletion of finite resources and the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, leading to global climate change (Demirbas 2010). Transportation accounts for about a third of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in the United States. Demand for oil continues to increase and resources are becoming more uncertain. Increased production of renewable fuels such as biofuels can help ease the dependence on fossil fuels. Although interest and production in biofuels has been increasing in the past decade, current feedstocks do not meet efficiency needs and some …

Conflict Resolution, Human Security, and Global Governance Faculty Publication Series

Global environmental change such as climate change and the degradation of ecosystem services is heightening risks and reducing opportunities, especially for poor and vulnerable populations. Such change is taking place in an increasingly globalized, urbanized, interconnected and fast-moving world amidst shifting geopolitical power balances. Burgeoning flows of goods and services, capital and technology, information and labour all fuel a growing global population with implications for patterns of consumption and production. The scale and persistence of global environmental problems require sustained collective efforts to meet internationally agreed goals. Responses at national and regional levels are already available, but addressing the underlying …

Multimodal Human-Machine Interface For Haptic-Controlled Excavators, Benjamin Osafo-Yeboah Jan 2012

Multimodal Human-Machine Interface For Haptic-Controlled Excavators, Benjamin Osafo-Yeboah

Dissertations

Since the 1940s, fluid power has been used effectively in combination with other technologies to provide power in the form of hydraulics or pneumatics for a variety of industries. One such machinery is the excavator. Although the excavator is widely used in industry, numerous design constraints make the interface less intuitive, resulting in long operator training and high cost. Further, traditional excavator-operator interfaces rely mainly on visual and to some extent auditory senses. This often leads to cognitive overload with its negative effect on performance. A haptic-controlled excavator interface has been proposed as an alternative to the traditional excavator interface. …

Biofunctional Coatings Using Direct-Write Fabrication Technique For Surgical Implant Devices, Jessica L. Perkins

Dissertations

Surface modification of biomaterials is of critical value to attain desired functionality of biomedical devices and implants. Many of the conventional manufacturing methods used for the fabrication of thin film coatings lack the ability to precisely dispense biological compounds without compromising its chemical integrity. This research investigates the use of direct-write inkjet technique for the deposition of multi-layer coatings of biodegradable polymers. The Direct Write inkjet method provides selective deposition and patterning capability for depositing multi-material coatings on biomaterials for a vast array of surgical implant devices (e.g. stents for cardiovascular applications and orthopedic implants). In the first phase of …
