Spacial Ecology, Behavior, And Habitat Use Of Terrestrial Coastal Giant Salamanders (Dicamptodon Tenebrosus) In The Central Washington Cascades, Brandon Fessler
Master of Biology Theses
I used radio-telemetry and remote camera monitoring ot investigate the terrestrial ecology Coastal Giant Salamanders (Dicamptodon tenebrosus). I tracked twelve salamanders an average of 319 days (range: 85-470) between June 2010 and September 2011. The majority of movements between tracking sessions were <20 m(85%, n= 209). The maximum movement distance observed was 271 m over three days. Camera monitoring showed D. tenebrosus move nocturnally, typically between 1900h and 0500h. Upland habitat use was common for D. tenebrosus, although all animals remained within 50 mof streams or seeps. Salamanders exhibited both range and refuge site fidelity; animals returned to previously occupied locations with wide variation ni the time (range: 6-381 days) and total distance traveled (range: 3-259 m) since last occupation. Salamanders were visible (both day and night) during 33.8% of radio-telemetry and 56.5% of camera monitoring sessions, typically seen facing out of refuge entrances.

RATIONALE: Soluble guanylyl cyclase (sGC) generates cyclic guanosine monophophate (cGMP) upon activation by nitric oxide (NO). Cardiac NO-sGC-cGMP signaling blunts cardiac stress responses, including pressure-overload-induced hypertrophy. The latter itself depresses signaling through this pathway by reducing NO generation and enhancing cGMP hydrolysis.
OBJECTIVE: We tested the hypothesis that the sGC response to NO also declines with pressure-overload stress and assessed the role of heme-oxidation and altered intracellular compartmentation of sGC as potential mechanisms.
METHODS AND RESULTS: C57BL/6 mice subjected to transverse aortic constriction (TAC) developed cardiac hypertrophy and dysfunction. NO-stimulated sGC activity was markedly depressed, whereas NO- and heme-independent sGC …

Genome structural annotation, i.e., identification and demarcation of the boundaries for all the functional elements in a genome (e.g., genes, non-coding RNAs, proteins and regulatory elements), is a prerequisite for systems level analysis. Current genome annotation programs do not identify all of the functional elements of the genome, especially small non-coding RNAs (sRNAs). Whole genome transcriptome analysis is a complementary method to identify "novel" genes, small RNAs, regulatory regions, and operon structures, thus improving the structural annotation in bacteria. In particular, the identification of non-coding RNAs has revealed their widespread occurrence and functional importance in gene regulation, stress and virulence. …

The Effects Of Muscle Mass On Homocyst(E)Ine Levels In Plasma And Urine, M. René Malinow, Craig L. Lister, Carl De Crée
International Journal of Exercise Science
The present study was designed to examine the relationship between homocyst(e)ine (H[e]) lev-els and muscle mass. Two experimental groups each of 24 Caucasian males, one consisting of higher-muscle mass subjects (HMM) and the other of lower-muscle mass subjects (LMM) par-ticipated in this study. Muscle mass was estimated from 24-hour urine collections of creatinine (Crt). Muscle mass was 40.3 ± 15.9 kg in HMM and 37.2 ± 11.4 kg in LMM (P= 0.002). Mean plasma H(e) levels in HMM were 10.29 ± 2.9 nmol/mL, and in LMM were 10.02 ± 2.4 nmol/L (Not significant, [NS]). Urinary H(e) levels (UH[e]) were 9.95 …

Texas Senate Bill 530 (2007) mandated fitness assessment as part of the annual K-8 Physical Education (PE) curricula, yet no studies have reported interventions designed to improve and quantify individual student passing rates or individual school performance. Students (Total 2008-2010 N=1484; 729 females, 755 males; mean age = 11.85 y; mean BMI = 22.69 or > 90%-tile, overweight) were evaluated on individual FITNESSGRAM® performances in a cross-sectional analysis of 6th graders comparing baseline scores (year 1) with outcomes of a physical activity intervention in years 2 and 3. Students participated in regular PE classes (including campus wellness center activities) with a …

Forest Elephant Mitochondrial Genomes Reveal That Elephantid Diversification In Africa Tracked Climate Transitions, Adam L. Brandt, Yasuko Ishida, Nicholas Georgiadis, Alfred L. Roca

Among elephants, the phylogeographic patterns of mitochondrial (mt) and nuclear markers are often incongruent. One hypothesis attributes this to sex differences in dispersal and in the variance of reproductive success. We tested this hypothesis by examining the coalescent dates of genetic markers within elephantid lineages, predicting that lower dispersal and lower variance in reproductive success among females would have increased mtDNA relative to nuclear coalescent dates. We sequenced the mitochondrial genomes of two forest elephants, aligning them to mitogenomes of African savanna and Asian elephants, and of woolly mammoths, including the most divergent mitogenomes within each lineage. Using fossil calibrations, …

Comparison Of Infrared Measurements Of Body Temperature To Rectal Temperature In Beef Cattle, Sa`Ad Mohammad Ismail
Comparison Of Infrared Measurements Of Body Temperature To Rectal Temperature In Beef Cattle, Sa`Ad Mohammad Ismail
Student Theses and Dissertations
This study was designed to determine if infrared thermometers (IRT) can provide temperature measurments at different body locations that are correlated with rectal temperature measurments in beef cattle. Data anaylsis indicated that measurements taken with IRTs were correlated with rectal temperatures taken at the tail and eye. Correlation coefficients between rectal temperatures and IRT temperatures obtained at different distances decreased as the distance increased. Measurements obtained with IRT2 were more highly correlated with rectal temperatures than those obtained using IRT1 because IRT2 has a better D-S Ratio (12:1) than the D-S Ratio (8:1) of IRT1. Of all the external factors …

Effects Of Early Alcohol Exposure On Ocular Dominance Plasticity, Crystal Lantz
Effects Of Early Alcohol Exposure On Ocular Dominance Plasticity, Crystal Lantz
Theses and Dissertations
Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder is the leading cause of mental retardation in the western world. It is associated with learning and sensory deficits. Some of these deficits are a result of faulty neuronal plasticity. Previously our lab has used ferrets to demonstrate that alcohol exposure during the third trimester of human gestation results in impaired ocular dominance plasticity (ODP). Here we have transferred this model to mice. Mice, treated with 5 mg/kg of ethanol on postnatal days 5, 7 and 9, exhibit a lack of ODP plasticity after 10 days of monocular deprivation (MD) during the critical period of visual …

In view of the billions of dollars and enormous effort that might otherwise be wasted, the public interest will be best served if the Supreme Court of the United States reaches the merits of the present challenges to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) during its October 2011 Term. Potentially standing in the way, however, is the federal Tax Anti-Injunction Act (TAIA), which bars any “suit for the purpose of restraining the assessment or collection of any tax.” The dispute to date has mostly turned on the fraught and complex question of whether the ACA’s exaction for being …

Roles Of Trna In Cell Wall Biosynthesis, Kiley Dare, Michael Ibba
Roles Of Trna In Cell Wall Biosynthesis, Kiley Dare, Michael Ibba
Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research
Recent research into various aspects of bacterial metabolism such as cell wall and antibiotic synthesis, degradation pathways, cellular stress, and amino acid biosynthesis has elucidated roles of aminoacyl‐transfer ribonucleic acid (aa‐tRNA) outside of translation. Although the two enzyme families responsible for cell wall modifications, aminoacyl‐phosphatidylglycerol synthases (aaPGSs) and Fem, were discovered some time ago, they have recently become of intense interest for their roles in the antimicrobial resistance of pathogenic microorganisms. The addition of positively charged amino acids to phosphatidylglycerol (PG) by aaPGSs neutralizes the lipid bilayer making the bacteria less susceptible to positively charged antimicrobial agents. Fem transferases utilize …
