Action And Singing In Late 18th And Early 19th Century England, Robert Toft Jan 2012

Action And Singing In Late 18th And Early 19th Century England, Robert Toft

Performance Practice Review

RILM: "Examines the role that action played in the performance of vocal music in the late 18th and early 19th c., through descriptions in writings from the period. Gilbert Austin's Chironomia, or, A treatise on rhetorical delivery (London, 1806) provided instruction in elocution and described such topics as standing, using the hands and arms, and making gestures in relation to the text. Austin's notation of action is applied to Thomas Gray's poem An elegy written in a country church-yard--which was set to music by Stephen Storace--to illustrate how action might have been employed by singers in the late 18th …

The Unfolding Tale Of Griffes’S “White Peacock”, Taylor A. Greer Jan 2012

The Unfolding Tale Of Griffes’S “White Peacock”, Taylor A. Greer

Gamut: Online Journal of the Music Theory Society of the Mid-Atlantic

This essay provides an interdisciplinary study of
Charles Griffes’s monumental piano work, “The White Peacock,” integrating historical, analytical, and literary perspectives. A strong correspondence exists between the poem’s central image, the bird’s unfolding tail, and three aspects of Griffes’s setting: (1) his style of “motivic magnification,” in which the initial lush dominant ninth chord is transformed into composed-out melodic spans in the bass; (2) a strategic expansion of register, coinciding with the recapitulation; and (3) his unusual treatment of form, which in the final measures suggests perpetual repetition. Finally, Griffes’s work underlines his ties to European artistic culture by reviving …

Compound Melody And Jazz Improvisations: A Reconsideration, John D. Check Jan 2012

Compound Melody And Jazz Improvisations: A Reconsideration, John D. Check

Gamut: Online Journal of the Music Theory Society of the Mid-Atlantic

The concept of “compound melody” (a frequent component of Schenkerian analysis) pertains to the way a single line of music projects two or more voice-leading parts. While usually associated with works of the common-practice period, it also plays a role in jazz improvisations. This is especially so in an improvisation by alto saxophonist Paul Desmond, on “All The Things You Are” by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II. The voice-leading graphs of this solo, and the attendant commentary, suggest that an awareness and appreciation of compound melody can enable a deeper understanding of jazz styles.

Lawyers Intentionally Inflicting Emotional Distress, Alex B. Long Jan 2012

Lawyers Intentionally Inflicting Emotional Distress, Alex B. Long

Scholarly Works

This article examines the tort of intentional infliction of emotional distress (IIED) as applied to lawyers engaged in the practice of law. IIED claims against lawyers have arisen in a variety of contexts, ranging from a lawyer’s act of disclosing client confidences to a prosecutor to demanding sex from a client in exchange for legal services. Courts have always had difficulty defining the concept of “extreme and outrageous conduct” for purposes of an IIED claim, but IIED claims against lawyers pose even greater definitional problems for courts. In an effort to provide greater clarity, the article advocates that courts should …

Effect Of Wine And Vinegar Processing Of Rhizoma Corydalis On The Tissue Distribution Of Tetrahydropalmatine, Protopine And Dehydrocorydaline In Rats, Zhiying Dou, Kefeng Li, Ping Wang, Liu Cao

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Vinegar and wine processing of medicinal plants are two traditional pharmaceutical techniques which have been used for thousands of years in China. Tetrahydropalmatine (THP), dehydrocorydaline (DHC) and protopine are three major bioactive molecules in Rhizoma Corydalis. In this study, a simple and reliable HPLC method was developed for simultaneous analysis of THP, DHC and protopine in rat tissues after gastric gavage administration of Rhizoma Corydalis. The validated HPLC method was successfully applied to investigate the effect of wine and vinegar processing on the compounds’ distribution in rat tissues. Our results showed that processing mainly affect the Tmax and mean …

The Effects Of Oxygen On The Electrophysiology Of Co2/H+-Chemosensitive And -Insensitive Neurons Of The Solitary Complex Of The Rat, Michael Patrick Matott Jan 2012

The Effects Of Oxygen On The Electrophysiology Of Co2/H+-Chemosensitive And -Insensitive Neurons Of The Solitary Complex Of The Rat, Michael Patrick Matott

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study tested the hypothesis that decreasing the control O2 level from 95% to 40% (5% CO2 + 55% N2) maintains viability in caudal solitary complex (cSC) neurons in transverse slices (~300-400ꝳ) prepared from neonatal rat (P2-22) maintained at 32-34°C. The underlying rationale is to reduce exposure to redox and nitrosative stimuli generated during several hours of exposure to 95% O2 that produces a tissue O2 tension throughout the slice which is in excess of 203 kPa (2.0 atmospheres absolute,ATA) oxygen. Whole cell recordings of cSC neurons maintained in 40% O2 exhibited spontaneous …

In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Desert Hedgehog Is A Mammal-Specific Gene Expressed During Testicular And Ovarian Development In A Marsupial, William A. O'Hara Jan 2012

Desert Hedgehog Is A Mammal-Specific Gene Expressed During Testicular And Ovarian Development In A Marsupial, William A. O'Hara

Master's Theses

Desert hedgehog (DHH) belongs to the hedgehog gene family that act as secreted intercellular signal transducers. DHH is an essential morphogen for normal testicular development and function in both mice and humans but is not present in the avian lineage. Like other hedgehog proteins, DHH signals through the patched (PTCH) receptors 1 and 2. Here we examine the expression and protein distribution of DHH, PTCH1 and PTCH2 in the developing testes of a marsupial mammal (the tammar wallaby) to determine whether DHH signalling is a conserved factor in gonadal development in all therian mammals.

Cardiac-Specific Expression Of The Tetracycline Transactivator Confers Increased Heart Function And Survival Following Ischemia Reperfusion Injury, Laila Elsherif, Xuerong Wang, Milana Grachoff, Beata Wolska, David Geenen, John O'Bryan Jan 2012

Cardiac-Specific Expression Of The Tetracycline Transactivator Confers Increased Heart Function And Survival Following Ischemia Reperfusion Injury, Laila Elsherif, Xuerong Wang, Milana Grachoff, Beata Wolska, David Geenen, John O'Bryan

Peer Reviewed Articles

Mice expressing the tetracycline transactivator (tTA) transcription factor driven by the rat a-myosin heavy chain promoter (a-MHC-tTA) are widely used to dissect the molecular mechanisms involved in cardiac development and disease. However, these a-MHC-tTA mice exhibit a gain-of-function phenotype consisting of robust protection against ischemia/reperfusion injury in both in vitro and in vivo models in the absence of associated cardiac hypertrophy or remodeling. Cardiac function, as assessed by echocardiography, did not differ between a-MHC-tTA and control animals, and there were no noticeable differences observed between the two groups in HW/TL ratio or LV end-diastolic and end-systolic dimensions. Protection against ischemia/reperfusion …

Assessing Ecological Risk Of Proposed Mines: Can Valid Assessments Be Done Pre-Design?, Bob Loeffler Jan 2012

Assessing Ecological Risk Of Proposed Mines: Can Valid Assessments Be Done Pre-Design?, Bob Loeffler

ISER Reports

Large resource development projects take years to plan. During that planning time, the public frequently debates the potential benefits and risks of a project, but with incomplete information. In these debates, some people might assert that a project would have great benefits, while others might assert that it would certainly harm the environment. At the same time, the developer will be assessing different designs, before finally submitting one to the government permitting agencies for evaluation and public scrutiny. For large mines in Alaska, the government permitting process takes years, and often includes an ecological risk assessment. This assessment is a …

Monti, Md, Edith Mitchell, Anthony J Bazzan, Susan Littman, George Zabrecky, Charles J Yeo, Madhaven V Pillai, Andrew B Newberg, Sandeep Deshmukh, Mark Levine

Department of Medical Oncology Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Preclinical data support further investigation of ascorbic acid in pancreatic cancer. There are currently insufficient safety data in human subjects, particularly when ascorbic acid is combined with chemotherapy.

METHODS AND FINDINGS: 14 subjects with metastatic stage IV pancreatic cancer were recruited to receive an eight week cycle of intravenous ascorbic acid (three infusions per week), using a dose escalation design, along with standard treatment of gemcitabine and erlotinib. Of 14 recruited subjects enrolled, nine completed the study (three in each dosage tier). There were fifteen non-serious adverse events and eight serious adverse events, all likely related to progression of …

The Influence Of Caspase-3 On The Calpain Enzyme System During Meat Aging, D.A. Mohrhouse, S.A. Kern, K.R. Underwood, A.D. Weaver

South Dakota Beef Report, 2012

Tenderness is a key component of palatability, which influences consumers’ perception of meat quality. There are a variety of factors that contribute to variations in tenderness, including postmortem proteolysis. A more complete understanding of this biological mechanism regulating tenderness is needed to ensure consistently tender beef. Numerous reports indicate μ-calpain is primarily responsible for the degradation of proteins postmortem. Additionally, it has been shown that caspase-3 can cleave calpastatin, the inhibitor of μ-calpain. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine if in vitro degradation of calpastatin by caspase-3 can enhance the postmortem breakdown of myofibrillar proteins by μ-calpain. …
