Identification Inducement Strategies Used By North Dakota State University To Recruit And Retain Multicultural Graduate Students, Gladys Nabaggala Namuganga Jan 2011

Identification Inducement Strategies Used By North Dakota State University To Recruit And Retain Multicultural Graduate Students, Gladys Nabaggala Namuganga

Communication

The desire to attract an increasing number of minorities is pushing institutions of higher learning to brand themselves and communicate with students in ways that ensure their identification with the institution. Students' identification with an institution is one way to increase their enrollment numbers at the institution. This study was interested in determining whether NDSU's Graduate School and Office of Multicultural Programs used Cheney's (1983a) organizational identification inducement strategies in their recruitment and retention material that targeted multicultural graduate students. A closed coding textual analysis was used to analyze the material. Three of the four strategies were present in the …

Emerging Political Identification Of Young Adults, Jason Douglas Isaacson Jan 2011

Emerging Political Identification Of Young Adults, Jason Douglas Isaacson

Communication

Research has more than adequately established the importance of the role of parents in the political socialization of young people. However, there is surprisingly little research that examines if and when young people deviate from their parental influence. Once deviation occurs, who replaces parents in the role of influencing the development of the political self? This research examined the development of political identification in young people ages 19-24 to discover if young people deviate from their socialized political attitudes usually instilled by their parents. It also sought to discover what outside influence is having the strongest effect on the subjects …

Intercultural Communication Competence Theory: Integrating Academic And Practical Perspectives, Nadene N. Vevea Jan 2011

Intercultural Communication Competence Theory: Integrating Academic And Practical Perspectives, Nadene N. Vevea

Communication

Over the past five decades, scholars of intercultural communication have attempted to define, describe, and otherwise operationalize the concept of competency in an intercultural interaction. This study constructed a comprehensive theory of intercultural communication competence (ICC) grounded in the extant literature and the practical or everyday understanding of the concept. Using classroom data that was validated by a metasynthesis of existing qualitative or ethnographic studies describing ICC, the academic definitions and lay descriptions were each explored and then compared to find points of convergence and points of divergence. The comparative analysis provided the foundation for the development of tenets: ICC …

The Infected Hip: A Treatment Algorithm, Bahar Adeli, Javad Parvizi Md

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers

The management of periprosthetic joint infection following total joint arthroplasty is presently a major challenge to orthopedic surgeons. Despite various treatment options available, the two-stage revision procedure is most often chosen in North America because of a high success rate, especially in cases involving resistant organisms. Sometimes the use of antibiotics alone, irrigation with debridement, or a one-stage exchange may be a more appropriate treatment option. Various factors such as the status of a patient’s immune system, time of onset of the infection, as well as susceptibility of causative microorganism should be considered as they play an important role in …

Lipoic Acid Supplementation In The Ovariectomized Ewe, Rachel Susan Mottet Jan 2011

Lipoic Acid Supplementation In The Ovariectomized Ewe, Rachel Susan Mottet

Agribusiness and Applied Economics

Inadequate concentrations of progesterone during gestation can result in impaired embryonic growth and losses. These losses may be attributed to an overactive mechanism of progesterone catabolism or improper luteal function, which results in low concentration of progesterone. Progesterone catabolism occurs to the greatest extent by the liver, which holds a vast supply of cytochrome P450 enzymes and aldo-keto reductases that are involved in steroid inactivation. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that is involved in glucose uptake and metabolism. Progesterone catabolism is decreased in the presence of elevated insulin levels. Lipoic acid is a naturally occurring antioxidant and …

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Mitochondrial genome sequence analysis is critical to the diagnostic evaluation of mitochondrial disease. Existing methodologies differ widely in throughput, complexity, cost efficiency, and sensitivity of heteroplasmy detection. Affymetrix MitoChip v2.0, which uses a sequencing-by-genotyping technology, allows potentially accurate and high-throughput sequencing of the entire human mitochondrial genome to be completed in a cost-effective fashion. However, the relatively low call rate achieved using existing software tools has limited the wide adoption of this platform for either clinical or research applications. Here, we report the design and development of a custom bioinformatics software pipeline that achieves a much improved call rate …

Potential For Interdependent Development Of Trna Determinants For Aminoacylation And Ribosome Decoding., Cuiping Liu, Howard Gamper, Hanqing Liu, Barry S Cooperman, Ya-Ming Hou

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers

Although the nucleotides in tRNA required for aminoacylation are conserved in evolution, bacterial aminoacyl-transfer RNA synthetases are unable to acylate eukaryotic tRNA. The cross-species barrier may be due to the absence of eukaryote-specific domains from bacterial aminoacyl-transfer RNA synthetases. Here we show that whereas Escherichia coli CysRS cannot acylate human tRNA(Cys), the fusion of a eukaryote-specific domain of human CysRS overcomes the cross-species barrier in human tRNA(Cys). In addition to enabling recognition of the sequence differences in the tertiary core of tRNA(Cys), the fused eukaryotic domain redirects the specificity of E. coli CysRS from the A37 present in bacterial tRNA(Cys) …

Negativing Invention, Jacob S. Sherkow Jan 2011

Negativing Invention, Jacob S. Sherkow

Articles & Chapters

Since 1952, the patent statute has forbidden courts from discriminating against, or “negativing,” inventions according to how they were made, be it “long toil and experimentation” or a “flash of genius.” Now, in addressing whether an invention is “obvious,” courts must only examine whether the invention was obvious according to the arts pertinent to that invention — the “analogous” rather than “nonanalogous” arts. This article shows that this dichotomy has actually promoted method-of-invention discrimination in patent law because the subjectivity of the analogous art inquiry has increasingly “analogized” wide fields of prior art as technology has progressed. This, in turn, …
