A Qualitative Study Of Instructional Strategies Used By Elementary General Education Teachers In Inclusive Classrooms, Kristen Peterson Jan 2011

A Qualitative Study Of Instructional Strategies Used By Elementary General Education Teachers In Inclusive Classrooms, Kristen Peterson

Dissertations

It has become evident in recent years that it is not the placement in the general education classroom that makes the difference for the education of students with disabilities, but it is the instructional strategies used by general education teachers (King- Sears, 1997; Vaughn & Schumm, 1995; Zigmond, 2003; Zigmond & Baker, 1995). In the last two decades, considerable progress has been made in designing, implementing, and evaluating effective interventions for students with learning disabilities. Although the research on effective instruction is abundant, studies continue to reveal general education teachers minimally change their instruction when students with learning disabilities are …

Dissertations

The phenomenological study examined the retrospective perceptions of academic experiences and outcomes of 13 African American full or part-time college students enrolled in either a community college or university located in an urban area. For the purpose of this study, educational experiences are defined as self-reported academic achievements and perceived success levels attained by participants during high school. Academic outcomes are the self-reported academic achievement and success level attained at their colleges and universities. The researcher interviewed participants, using a one-on-one interview process to conduct the interviews.

This study examined influences of race congruence between students and teachers. This topic …

Estimating Tau (Τ) From Left Ventricular Pressure Waveforms During Vena Caval Occlusions, Sushma Gopinath Jan 2011

Estimating Tau (Τ) From Left Ventricular Pressure Waveforms During Vena Caval Occlusions, Sushma Gopinath

Electrical and Computer Engineering

Many people are dependent on artificial pacemakers to have a normal cardiac function. Due to this it is important to study the effects of pacing on cardiac function, as well as, to determine the best site to pace with an artificial pacemaker that yields the best cardiac performance. Tau (τ), the time constant of left ventricular relaxation, has been studied as one measure of effective cardiac function, where high τ has been associated with myocardial ischemia and hence a low τ is desirable. The objective of the current study was to create a program in MATLAB™ that estimates τ from …

Solution Processing Electronics Using Si6 H12 Inks: Poly-Si Tfts And Co-Si Mos Capacitors, Syed Shihab Ullah Jan 2011

Solution Processing Electronics Using Si6 H12 Inks: Poly-Si Tfts And Co-Si Mos Capacitors, Syed Shihab Ullah

Electrical and Computer Engineering

The development of new materials and processes for electronic devices has been driven by the integrated circuit (IC) industry since the dawn of the computer era. After several decades of '"Moore's Law"-type innovation, future miniaturization may be slowed down by materials and processing limitations. By way of comparison, the nascent field of flexible electronics is not driven by the smallest possible circuit dimension, but instead by cost and form-factor where features typical of 1970s CMOS (i.e., channel length - IO μm) will enable flexible electronic technologies such as RFID, e-paper, photovoltaics and health monitoring devices. In this thesis. cyclohexasilane is …

Calculating Cardiovascular Lumped-Parameter Model Values By Injecting Small Volume Perturbations In An Isovolumic Heart, Jeff Wandler Jan 2011

Calculating Cardiovascular Lumped-Parameter Model Values By Injecting Small Volume Perturbations In An Isovolumic Heart, Jeff Wandler

Electrical and Computer Engineering

Diagnosing cardiac patient problems contains many uncertainties, and to fully diagnose the patient's condition usually requires a lengthy drug regimen to see what works and what does not. Compounding this problem is that even after the correct drug regimen has been discovered, the underlying cause for the problem may remain a mystery. Thus, the uncertainty and the length of time required to provide an accurate and adequate solution makes it very difficult to provide quality care to the patient. Templeton and others have shown that lumped cardiac muscle parameters can be extracted from an isolated heart by injecting small volumes …

Development Of A System To Optimise Water Recharge And Timber Production From Pinus Pinaster Aiton Plantations On The Gnangara Water Mound, Scott Wood Jan 2011

Development Of A System To Optimise Water Recharge And Timber Production From Pinus Pinaster Aiton Plantations On The Gnangara Water Mound, Scott Wood

Theses

Degree Name:

Doctor of Natural Resource Management

In 1996, the Western Australian Government decided to progressively liquidate 21,000 hectares of Pinus pinaster Aiton plantations located 20 kilometres north of Perth on the Gnangara Water Mound. The decision was made for a number of reasons but one of the principal concerns was the conflict between water use and timber production. The decision to liquidate the plantation over a prescribed period while meeting a legal requirement to produce timber for a laminated veneer lumber plant provided the opportunity to integrate the large database on plantation growth and water recharge and use operational …

Event Ecology: An Analysis Of Discourses Surrounding The Disappearance Of The Kah Shakes Cove Herring (Clupea Pallasi), Jamie Sue Hebert

Dissertations and Theses

The conflict over the herring run at Kah Shakes is complicated. In 1991, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADFG) expanded the commercial herring sac roe fishing boundary in the Revillagigedo Channel to include Cat and Dog Islands. Native and non-Native local residents of Ketchikan protested the boundary expansion, as did managers of the neighboring Annette Island Fishery managed by the local reservation. Using cultural anthropological research methods that include ethnographic data, semi-structured, qualitative interviews gathered in southeast Alaska in 2008, and a comprehensive literature review of historic data culled from newspapers and other texts, I examine the many …

Postfledging Survival And Habitat Use Of Spotted Towhees (Pipilo Maculatus) In An Urban Park, Amy Ann Shipley Jan 2011

Postfledging Survival And Habitat Use Of Spotted Towhees (Pipilo Maculatus) In An Urban Park, Amy Ann Shipley

Dissertations and Theses

Habitat fragmentation, and the resulting increase in edge habitat, has important effects on birds, including the increased probability of nest predation, changes in habitat structure, and the increased presence of non-native plant species. It is critical to understand the effects of fragmentation at all stages of the avian life cycle, including the often overlooked postfledging period. Because much of juvenile mortality occurs during the immediate postfledging period, and juvenile mortality contributes substantially to population dynamics, it is necessary to understand if fledgling survival is reduced in edge habitats and if fledglings' survival is influenced by their habitat use. During 2008 …

Employee Age Differences In Formal Performance Feedback Reactions: Examining The Effects Of Perceived Valence, Content, And Delivery, Gabriela Burlacu Jan 2011

Employee Age Differences In Formal Performance Feedback Reactions: Examining The Effects Of Perceived Valence, Content, And Delivery, Gabriela Burlacu

Dissertations and Theses

As the nature of work is rapidly changing, organizations in developed nations all over the world are experiencing shifts in the age composition of their workforces. These changes, which include an aging workforce that is becoming increasingly age-diverse, indicate that organizational researchers and practitioners need to be better aware of how age differences manifest themselves in the workplace and what implications this has for effective employee management. In the current study it is proposed that employees of different ages react differently to various elements of a formal performance feedback event. Specifically, Carstensen's developmental Socio-emotional Selectivity Theory is used as a …

Interception In Open-Grown Douglas-Fir (Pseudotsuga Menziesii) Urban Canopy, Mitchell Bixby Jan 2011

Interception In Open-Grown Douglas-Fir (Pseudotsuga Menziesii) Urban Canopy, Mitchell Bixby

Dissertations and Theses

I hypothesized that Douglas-fir trees (Pseudotsuga menziesii) standing apart from other trees ('open-grown') will intercept more rainfall than Douglas-fir trees standing near other trees ('closed-canopy'). Open-grown trees differ structurally and are more common in urban settings, yet have been infrequently studied. Existing literature, based primarily on closed-canopy trees, suggests Douglas-fir trees in Pacific Northwest forests intercept approximately 25% of rainfall annually. Because open-grown trees have more vertical leaf area than individual trees in closed-canopy forests, I expected to find higher interception by open-grown trees.

I collected throughfall under four open-grown Douglas-firs using six static collectors ('buckets') per tree, …

Propagule Pressure And Disturbance Drive The Spread Of An Invasive Grass, Brachypodium Sylvaticum, Laura Alayna Vician Taylor Jan 2011

Propagule Pressure And Disturbance Drive The Spread Of An Invasive Grass, Brachypodium Sylvaticum, Laura Alayna Vician Taylor

Dissertations and Theses

The invasibility, or susceptibility of an ecosystem to biological invasion is influenced by changes in biotic and abiotic resistance often due to shifts in disturbance regime. The magnitude of invasive propagule pressure interacts with an ecosystem's invasibility to determine the extent of a biological invasion. I examined how propagule pressure, forest community structure and disturbance interact to influence the invasibility of temperate Pacific Northwest forests by the newly-invasive grass, Brachypodium sylvaticum. My goal was to identify which of these factors is most instrumental in enabling the shift from establishment to population growth in B. sylvaticum at the edge of …

Feedbacks Of Methane And Nitrous Oxide Emissions From Rice Agriculture, Alec Sithole Jan 2011

Feedbacks Of Methane And Nitrous Oxide Emissions From Rice Agriculture, Alec Sithole

Dissertations and Theses

The effect of global warming on methane (CH₄) and nitrous oxide (N₂O) emissions from agriculture was investigated and simulated from a soil warming experiment. Experiments were designed and installed in a temperature controlled greenhouse. The relationships between elevated temperatures and CH₄ and N₂O emissions were determined and calculated as the Q₁₀s of production, emission and oxidation. A study of the populations of methanogens and methanotrophs at a range of soil temperatures was performed based on soil molecular DNA analysis. This study showed that global warming would increase CH₄ emissions from rice agriculture and that the resultant emissions will be potentially …
