Two-Dimensional Electron Gas At Oxide Interfaces, Karolina Janicka Dec 2011

Two-Dimensional Electron Gas At Oxide Interfaces, Karolina Janicka

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Extraordinary phenomena can occur at the interface between two oxide materials. A spectacular example is a formation of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) at the SrTiO3/LaAlO3 interface. In this dissertation the properties of the 2DEG are investigated from first principles.

The spatial extent of the 2DEG formed at the SrTiO3/LaAlO3 n-type interface is studied. It is shown that the confinement of the 2DEG is controlled by metal induced gap states formed in the band gap of SrTiO3. The confinement width is then determined by the attenuation length of the metal induced gap …

Characterizing The Phosphorylation State Of Tie2 Using Sh2 Domain Fusion Proteins, Kenneth Yuth

Theses and Dissertations

The cardiovascular system develops through two distinct processes in embryogenesis: vasculogenesis, whereby the primary plexus in the heart is formed along with embryonic and extraembryonic vasculature, and angiogenesis, which begins after vasculogenesis and results in the refinement and maturation of the branched vessel system. In pathological angiogenesis, tumors expand by releasing pro-angiogenic factors in response to hypoxic conditions. The Tie receptors, Tie1 and Tie2, are receptor tyrosine kinases that are integral to angiogenic pathways. A family of Angiopoietins, Ang1-4, have been shown to act as ligands for Tie2, of which Ang1 and Ang2 are best characterized. Activation of the receptor …

Korean Esl Students’ Use Of English Definite Articles, Hannah R. Morrett Dec 2011

Korean Esl Students’ Use Of English Definite Articles, Hannah R. Morrett

Senior Honors Theses

Misuse of English articles is a very common error among ESL students. If a student’s first language does not contain an article, learning a second language that has an article system will prove to be very difficult. Korean is an example of a language that does not contain articles, but instead relies heavily on the context of the sentence, as well as determiners to indicate definiteness and specificity. In order to understand how students learn and acquire English articles, a basic understanding is needed of Language Acquisition and theories of Second Language Acquisition. These explanations are continued through various literature …

Jesus Music: The Story Of The Jesus Movement And Evaluation Of Its Musical Impact, Shimon K. Galiley

Senior Honors Theses

Few recent historical developments have had as much impact on American Evangelical Christianity as the Jesus Movement. Dating back only a few decades, this movement resulted in the conversion of many countercultural youth and the consequent revitalization of many American churches. One of the greatest impacts of the Jesus Movement was its new music which came to be known as “Jesus Music.”

This thesis describes the history of the Jesus Movement and the musical impact it had on American Evangelical Christianity.

Healthcare Acquired Infection Risk And Toothbrush Contamination In The Icu., Michelle Frazelle

Theses and Dissertations

Healthcare acquired infections (HAIs) are a complex and multi-factorial problem associated with high morbidity, mortality, and cost. Toothbrushes (TBs) may be at risk for contamination with potential pathogenic microorganisms (PPMs) from the patient care environment or autoinnoculation from the patient. We focused on three PPMs: multiply resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), vancomycin resistant Enterococcus (VRE), and Acinetobacter. Specific aims were to (1) describe environmental factors associated with TB contamination in the ICU; (2) describe the relationship between TB contamination and oral colonization in critically ill adults.

An Rf Cmos Implementation Of An Adaptive Filter For Narrow-Band Interferer Suppression In Uwb Systems, Markus Both Dec 2011

An Rf Cmos Implementation Of An Adaptive Filter For Narrow-Band Interferer Suppression In Uwb Systems, Markus Both

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Ultra-wideband (UWB) technology is a new type of technology for wireless communication that is based on the transmission of low power sub-nanosecond pulses. UWB communication utilizes a large bandwidth that overlaps and is coexistent with other wireless communication standards that can be also considered as narrow-band interferers. Because UWB systems are highly susceptible to narrow-band interferers, there is a demand for interferer suppression. An adaptive filter consisting of a two-element diversity receiver that performs minimum mean square error combining (MMSE) by the LMS algorithm is proposed. Thereby the elements of the LMS algorithm as well as the receiver LNA were …

Many non-native plants in the US have become problematic invaders of native and managed ecosystems, but a new generation of invasive species may be at our doorstep. Here, we review trends in the horticultural trade and invasion patterns of previously introduced species and show that novel species introductions from emerging horticultural trade partners are likely to rapidly increase invasion risk. At the same time, climate change and water restrictions are increasing demand for new types of species adapted to warm and dry environments. This confluence of forces could expose the US to a range of new invasive species, including many …

Virtual Microstructure Generation Of Asphaltic Mixtures, Mohammad Haft-Javaherian Dec 2011

Virtual Microstructure Generation Of Asphaltic Mixtures, Mohammad Haft-Javaherian

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This thesis describes the development and application of a virtual microstructure generator incorporated with post-processing image analysis methods that can be used to fabricate a virtual, two-dimensional microstructure of asphaltic mixtures. In the generator, geometrical characteristics such as aggregate gradation, aggregate area fraction, angularity, orientation, and elongation were used to transform data from a three-dimensional (3D) mixture into its two-dimensional (2D) microstructure. The 2D virtual microstructures were generated from real 3D mixture information of asphaltic composites. Resulting virtual microstructures were then compared to real cross-sectional microstructure images obtained from actual samples for validation. Comparison presented a good agreement between the …

Swapped Disincentives: Will Clearinghouses Mitigate The Unintended Effects Of The Bankruptcy Code's Swap Exemptions?, Timothy P.W. Sullivan

Fordham Law Review

The Bankruptcy Code contains exemptions for swap agreements that allow creditors to seize collateral, to terminate their contract, and to net obligations once the debtor files for bankruptcy. By privileging this class of creditors, these provisions reduce incentives to monitor counterparty risk, and thus magnified losses experienced during the recent financial crisis. Congress overlooked this role of the Bankruptcy Code in destabilizing the financial system. Instead, its response was to require that all swaps be traded through a clearinghouse. This failure to address one of the contributing factors to the swap market’s collapse should be worrisome, as a clearinghouse’s traditional …

The Age Of Forgotten Innocence: The Dangers Of Applying Analog Restrictions To Innocent Infringement In The Digital Era, Brian Sheridan Dec 2011

The Age Of Forgotten Innocence: The Dangers Of Applying Analog Restrictions To Innocent Infringement In The Digital Era, Brian Sheridan

Fordham Law Review

Recently, two popular topics of discussion within intellectual property law have been the statutory damage regime and the legality of peer-to-peer (P2P) downloading. This Note examines a rarely discussed interplay between these two concepts: the innocent infringement defense. Innocent infringement allows a court to dramatically reduce the minimum statutory damage award for an act of copyright infringement from $750 to $200 per act. Both the Fifth and Seventh Circuits have found that § 402(d) of the Copyright Act eliminates innocent infringement as a matter of law in a P2P download setting. This Note examines those circuits’ reasoning as well as the …
