Effect Of Extracellular Matrix (Ecm) Protein Micropatterns On The Behavior Of Human Neuroblastoma Cells, Ishwari Poudel
Effect Of Extracellular Matrix (Ecm) Protein Micropatterns On The Behavior Of Human Neuroblastoma Cells, Ishwari Poudel
Department of Engineering Mechanics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Recent advances in patterning techniques and emerging surface microtechnologies have allowed cell micropatterning to control spatial location of the cells on a surface as well as cell shape, attachment area, and number of contacting neighbor cells. These parameters play important roles in cell cellular behaviors. Cell micropatterning has thus become one of the most important strategies for biomedical applications, such as, tissue engineering, diagnostic immunoassays, lab-on-chip devices, bio-sensing, etc., and cell biology studies as well. For neuronal cells, there have been attempts to distribute neuronal cells on specific patterns to control cell-to-cell interaction. However, there have been very limited understanding …

How Jane Austen Uses Marriage To Get What She Wants, Hannah Eberle
How Jane Austen Uses Marriage To Get What She Wants, Hannah Eberle
Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee
As a biochemistry major approaching the subject of Jane Austen and feminism, I found the dichotomy between pleasure readers and critical readers interesting. How can books that are almost 200 years old draw so much attention from both quarters still today? In my thesis, I use Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, and Emma to discuss how Austen uses the marriage plot in the context of the 18th century. This plot device allows her to point out problems with marriage as a market, such as emphasis on wealth and the social setup that requires women to be "taken …
Perceived Containment As A Predictor Of Children’S Aggression Towards Peers, Kristina L. Gowin
Perceived Containment As A Predictor Of Children’S Aggression Towards Peers, Kristina L. Gowin
Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee
The current study investigates the extent to which children’s levels of perceived containment predict their aggression towards peers in a community program in a sample of 132 school-age children (Mean age = 8.83 years; 55% male). Perceived Containment was assessed by the administration of the Perceived Containment Questionnaire (PCQ) (Schneider et al., 2003). Relational Aggression was measured by using the Children’s Social Behavior Scale-Teacher Report (Crick et al., 1996). Children’s ratings on the Perceived Containment Questionnaire were found to be unrelated to staff reports of relational aggression. However, a direct relationship was discovered between children's ratings on the Perceived Containment …
Putting Their Eggs In India’S Basket: What Vertical Integration, Church’S Chicken, And Globalization Mean To Increasing Chicken Consumption In India, Scott E. Basford
Putting Their Eggs In India’S Basket: What Vertical Integration, Church’S Chicken, And Globalization Mean To Increasing Chicken Consumption In India, Scott E. Basford
Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee
India has the second largest population in the world and a rapidly growing economy, yet it lags far behind the world average in chicken meat consumption. Nonetheless, rates are increasing briskly and are expected to double within five years. Understanding the factors that contribute to this rise can provide broader insight into political, economic and social developments in Indian society. This paper reviews current and projected levels of chicken consumption across India through an investigation of current literatures which assert that a cultural dietary aversion to red meat, rising incomes, increased urbanization, lower consumer cost, and, most importantly, vertically integrated …

Similarities In Fan Preferences For Minor-League Baseball Across The American Southeast, Tyler Anthony, Tim Kahn, Briana Madison, Rodney Paul, Andrew Weinbach
Similarities In Fan Preferences For Minor-League Baseball Across The American Southeast, Tyler Anthony, Tim Kahn, Briana Madison, Rodney Paul, Andrew Weinbach
Falk College Research Center
Three Minor League Baseball leagues across the Southeastern United States are studied in order to determine what drives fan attendance. Individual game attendance and game characteristics are examined for three leagues located in the American southeast, the Florida State League, the Southern League, and the South Atlantic League. Despite the three leagues encompassing different levels of play (from A to AA), the determinants of attendance are similar across leagues. Factors affecting attendance such as winning percentage, weather conditions, local income and population, and individual game promotions, such as fireworks, are explored.

Determining A Community Retrofit Strategy For The Aging Housing Stock Using Utility And Assessor Data, Nathan A. Barry
Determining A Community Retrofit Strategy For The Aging Housing Stock Using Utility And Assessor Data, Nathan A. Barry
Department of Construction Engineering and Management: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Residential buildings account for about 21.5% of the nation’s primary energy consumption and carbon emissions, and about 38% of electricity use. The housing stock in the United States consists of over 128 million residences with over 60% being constructed prior to 1979 when building codes and regulations began standardizing building practices. Seeking an opportunity to understand and reduce consumption, the scientific community developed a number of model-driven auditing software. While these computer models have been successful in predicting usage patterns in newer residential structures, they have been inaccurate in predicting and analyzing energy use in aging housing stock, predominantly homes …
Ann Based Load Identification And Forecasting System For The Built Environment, Hosen Hasna
Ann Based Load Identification And Forecasting System For The Built Environment, Hosen Hasna
Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
"Phantom Loads" cause energy waste in homes and the built environment as a whole. Consumers spend more than $3 billion a year on "Phantom Load" in the United States alone. The goal of this work is to conserve energy by increasing consumer awareness on their energy usage and appropriate tools which in turn will be reducing and /or eliminating phantom loads and mismanagement of the load in the built environment. A further goal is to improve upon existing power distribution systems in the built environment with limited hardware additions to increase energy conservation. This work investigates remote identification of load …
The Political Effect Of The Ku Klux Klan In North Dakota, Trevor M. Magel
The Political Effect Of The Ku Klux Klan In North Dakota, Trevor M. Magel
Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The 1920s was a transitional decade in the political history of the United States. Progressivism did not have the influence it had had in the first couple of decades of the 20th Century but its ideas were still part of the debate. But many other elements became more prominent such as: Americanism, Urbanization, and Nativism. North Dakota is a good case study of these trends and how the Klan tried to use these trends to gain power. The Nonpartisan League, Independent Voters' Association, and Ku Klux Klan conflict in North Dakota reflected broader political conflicts happening within the country over …
Development And Optimization Of Organic Based Monoliths For Use In Affinity Chromatography, Erika L. Pfaunmiller
Development And Optimization Of Organic Based Monoliths For Use In Affinity Chromatography, Erika L. Pfaunmiller
Department of Chemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Affinity chromatography is an important and useful tool for studying biological interactions, such as the binding of an antibody with an antigen. Monolithic supports offer many advantages over traditional packed bed supports in affinity chromatography, including their ease of preparation, low back pressures and good mass transfer properties. Monoliths can be broken down into two basic categories: organic (polymer) and inorganic (silica) monoliths. There are many varieties of polymer based monoliths; however, a large focus has been on co-polymers of glycidyl methacrylate (a functional monomer) and ethylene dimethacrylate (a cross-linking agent). The solvents of choice for making this type of …

Performance Investigation On Plate Heat Exchanger Using Nanofluid As Working Fluid / Ler Cherk Yong, Cherk Yong Lee
Student Works (2010-2019)
Plate heat exchanger (PHE) is a kind of heat transfer equipment that made up of a pack of thin corrugated metal plate that promote heat transfer between two fluids. Water as the most common heat transfer medium has low thermal conductivity that result in lower overall heat transfer coefficient. With rising interest in fluid with higher thermal conductivity offered by dispersing nanoparticles in base fluid, called ―nanofluids‖, researchers are investigating the advantages of applying this fluid in conventional heat transfer devices. In this study the performance of an existing PHE in oil and gas industry is investigated when the alumina …

The Evolution And Diversity Of Dna Transposons In The Genome Of The Lizard Anolis Carolinensis, Peter A. Novick, Jeremy D. Smith, Mark Floumanhaft, David A. Ray, Stéphane Boissinot
Publications and Research
DNA transposons have considerably affected the size and structure of eukaryotic genomes and have been an important source of evolutionary novelties. In vertebrates, DNA transposons are discontinuously distributed due to the frequent extinction and recolonization of these genomes by active elements. We performed a detailed analysis of the DNA transposons in the genome of the lizard Anolis carolinensis, the first non-avian reptile to have its genome sequenced. Elements belonging to six of the previously recognized superfamilies of elements (hAT, Tc1/Mariner, Helitron, PIF/Harbinger, Polinton/Maverick, and Chapaev) were identified. However, only four (hAT, Tc1/Mariner, Helitron, and Chapaev) of these superfamilies have successfully …
