The Effects Of Permanency On Youth In Foster Care: The Successes They Achieve After Exiting The System, Megan Foster Apr 2011

The Effects Of Permanency On Youth In Foster Care: The Successes They Achieve After Exiting The System, Megan Foster

Social Work Theses

This study reported on the connection between the permanency a youth in the foster care system experienced and the success they achieved as they transitioned out of the system. Housing, education, and employment were factors addressed. Data was gathered through four interviews with youth who had recently transitioned out of the foster care system and 435 surveys were collected in the months of April and October 2010. Results revealed that youth often use state programs to supplement their needs during the treatment process. Youth that attained success created and maintained relationships with workers who become adult supporters for them. Implications …

Sex Education And Its Influences On College Sex Practices, Matthew Yetsko

Social Work Theses

This was a relational study to examine the possibly of a correlation between type of high school sex education and types of attitudes and behaviors towards sex within the context of the college social environment. A review of the literature shows that comprehensive sex education has been more effective than no sex education or abstinence only sex education in delaying sexual activity, more effective in providing students information on using contraceptives for safe-sex practices, and more effective in preventing unwanted pregnancies and the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases and the HIV virus. The literature lacked any substantial information on the …

Childhood Social Factors And Their Impact On Young Adulthood Obesity, Sarah Burke Apr 2011

Childhood Social Factors And Their Impact On Young Adulthood Obesity, Sarah Burke

Social Work Theses

Obesity is a growing concern in the United States, particularly among children and adolescents. This study aimed to ascertain what factors including school/peer influences, culture, family lifestyle, and neighborhood environment, during individuals’ adolescence, impact their weight as young adults. The researcher conducted a survey that was given to students at a private catholic college in southern New England. A survey instrument was developed and distributed as a Facebook event restricted to college students at the specific institution, and additionally was distributed to one social work undergraduate course. The findings indicated that participant’s weight was most influenced by family lifestyle and …

The Pragmatics Of Transracial Adoption: A Parents’ Perspective, Ashley Chuha Apr 2011

The Pragmatics Of Transracial Adoption: A Parents’ Perspective, Ashley Chuha

Social Work Theses

This study examines the relationship between transracial adoption and racial and ethnic identity development from a parent’s perspective. By listening to stories and hearing experiences of these parents, the writer was able to obtain an idea regarding how the family as a whole views race and how the child expresses his or her differences within the family context. A review of the literature indicates that transracial adoption is an ongoing debate because of the importance of finding a permanent placement for a child and the potential loss of a cultural heritage by not living with a family of the same …

Sequencing Of Amine Nucleoside Polymers: Understanding The Fidelity Of Dna-Directed Reductive Amination, Sarah M. Anderson Apr 2011

Sequencing Of Amine Nucleoside Polymers: Understanding The Fidelity Of Dna-Directed Reductive Amination, Sarah M. Anderson

Honors Student Works

DNA replication is a form of template-directed polymerization that occurs with the aid of numerous enzymes. By developing a DNA replication mimic that can undergo template-directed polymerization without enzymes, the scope of template-directed polymerization will be broadened beyond biological systems. One template-directed polymerization method that has proven successful is reductive amination on a DNA template, a two-step polymerization reaction involving equilibrium imine formation followed by reduction of the imine to the amine. Because DNA-directed reductive amination is an information transfer system, it should proceed with fidelity; however, the extent of fidelity must be explored. These studies will require the ability …

Constructing A Vector For Over Expressing Nitrobenzene Dioxygenase In E. Coli, Paul Davis Apr 2011

Constructing A Vector For Over Expressing Nitrobenzene Dioxygenase In E. Coli, Paul Davis

Honors Student Works

Due to extensive use of nitroaromatic compounds in the production of dyes, pesticides, explosives, and their harmful effects on the environment, studying the enzyme mechanisms of bacteria capable of utilizing these compounds as nutrient sources have become a recent field of development. One example, the Comamonas sp. strain JS765, grows on nitrobenzene as its sole carbon, nitrogen and energy source. This bacterium contains a nitrobenzene dioxygenase enzyme system that incorporates O2 into the nitrobenzene ring to form catechol and nitrite. In this project, the genes that code for the dioxygenase enzyme were cloned and then transformed into an expression vector …

An Integrated Circuit/Microsystem/Nano-Enhanced Four Species Radiation Sensor For Inexpensive Fissionable Material Detection, Randy Paul Waguespack Apr 2011

An Integrated Circuit/Microsystem/Nano-Enhanced Four Species Radiation Sensor For Inexpensive Fissionable Material Detection, Randy Paul Waguespack

Doctoral Dissertations

Small scale radiation detectors sensitive to alpha, beta, electromagnetic, neutron radiation are needed to combat the threat of nuclear terrorism and maintain national security. There are many types of radiation detectors on the market, and the type of detector chosen is usually determined by the type of particle to be detected. In the case of fissionable material, an ideal detector needs to detect all four types of radiation, which is not the focus of many detectors. For fissionable materials, the two main types of radiation that must be detected are gamma rays and neutrons. Our detector uses a glass or …

Retention Of Science Majors Through Different Avenues Of General Chemistry Education, Benjamin P. Bilodeau, Melissa C. Rhoten Apr 2011

Retention Of Science Majors Through Different Avenues Of General Chemistry Education, Benjamin P. Bilodeau, Melissa C. Rhoten

Theses & Honors Papers

For the past two academic years, the chemistry division at Longwood University has implemented POGIL methodology in some sections of the general chemistry sequence for science majors. Initially we were interested in determining if students exposed to POGIL were more successful in general chemistry than those students that were not exposed to this teaching pedagogy. Subsequent studies compare conceptual learning outcomes of POGIL versus non-POGIL students and also try to determine if SAT and GALT scores are a good predictors of student success in general chemistry. This project also addresses the following question:do science majors exposed to POGIL pedagogy in …

Increasing Binding Strength For Capsaicin Analogs Through Alteration Of Lanthanide Chelates, R. Kruger Bressin, Christopher G. Gulgas Apr 2011

Increasing Binding Strength For Capsaicin Analogs Through Alteration Of Lanthanide Chelates, R. Kruger Bressin, Christopher G. Gulgas

Theses & Honors Papers

Capsaicin is the molecule in peppers that produces a sensation of heat and pain when exposed to sensory nerve cells in the body. A series of ethylenediaminetetracetate bisamide chelates have been synthesized with regions selective for capsaicinoid binding to determine which functional groups increase overall binding strength. The initial lanthanide complexes bound capsaicinoids with moderate strength (approximately 105 M" 1). Additions to the bis-amide region of the chelating ligand aim to increase the selectivity of the lanthanide complex for capsaicinoids. Derivatives have been synthesized that contain aromatic rings and carbon chains to augment binding strength via the hydrophobic effect. Upon …

Serving Safe Barbeques For A Crowd, Joan Hegerfeld-Baker, Nancy Pauly Apr 2011

Serving Safe Barbeques For A Crowd, Joan Hegerfeld-Baker, Nancy Pauly

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

At many gatherings—such as athletic or church events, summer festivals, county fairs, and family reunions—large amounts of ground beef barbeque (BBQ) are prepared. For many volunteers, “cooking for a crowd” is not a common practice and their kitchens are not equipped to cook large amounts of food. If you are called upon to be in charge of the BBQ for a large group or concession, consider the following safe food-handling techniques.

Youth In The Community: A Partnership Approach, Kari Freuchte Apr 2011

Youth In The Community: A Partnership Approach, Kari Freuchte

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Leaders often overlook a valuable community asset: their youth population. Many communities prioritize local resources to provide opportunities for youth, yet the community often asks little in return. Young people have significant contributions to make in the present, and their involvement today gives them ownership in the community’s future. If we are truly concerned about youth leaving our communities and not returning as adults, we must be willing to work with them today to figure out methods to provide for a positive future.
