The Mongolian Horse And Horseman, Elisabeth Yazdzik
The Mongolian Horse And Horseman, Elisabeth Yazdzik
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
I am halfway through my ISP when I discard the sheet of questions written for me in Mongolian, and begin to ask what really matters.
“I would like to learn not just about the practices of Mongolian horsemanship, but about the culture.”
“Chinggis Khan took the entire world on horseback; America was unknown then, and he nearly conquered Europe. Because of this, the horse is sacred.
We do our working riding horses. We eat the horse’s meat. Our herding is done from horseback. Because of this, the horse is sacred”.
These are the words of Rentsendavaa, spoken to me as …

Yak, A Green Icon And A Good Investment, Caroline Kang
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
“Yak, A Green Icon and Good Investment” was conceived after I briefly interned for the Mongol Yak Society during the NGO Drop Off. I became interested and even, invested in their mission. For three weeks of the ISP period, I worked closely with the Mongolian Yak Society based in Ulaanbaatar and researched how increasing the productive value of yaks through improved communications, equipment, knowledge, and support will address several key environmental and economic issues. I further focused on the Mongolian Yak Society and its role as a detached entity that intervenes on various levels of the yak wool value chain: …

Do Invasive Riparian Woody Plants Affect Hydrology And Ecosystem Processes?, Julie A. Huddle, Tala Awada, Derrel L. Martin, Xinhua Zhou, Sue Ellen Pegg, Scott J. Josiah
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Political and socioeconomic pressures on riparian areas in semiarid regions of the Great Plains are growing as water resources become more limited. Management along waterways has altered stream ecology and hydrology in ways that encourage the invasion and expansion of native (e.g., Juniperus virginiana) and non-native (e.g., Tamarix sp. and Elaeagnus angustifolia) woody species. One management tool currently implemented to restore the hydrology or increase water yields along waterways in semiarid areas is the removal of vegetation or invasive species. How managers should respond to invasive woody plants to optimize hydrological functions without compromising other riparian ecosystem functions …
Youth Dating Culture In Urban Vietnam: Attitudes, Behaviors, And Influences, Alexa Difiore
Youth Dating Culture In Urban Vietnam: Attitudes, Behaviors, And Influences, Alexa Difiore
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This paper attempts to research urban youth’s attitudes and behaviors concerning everything having to do with dating (the process, PDA, typical dating spots and behavior) and opinions towards “hot issues” in contemporary, Vietnam such as pre-marital sex and co-habitation. My research question focuses on what the term “dating” means among youth in urban Vietnam, and the various influences that affect youth’s dating and sexual lives. Through an extensive literature review, I learned that there is an overall lack of information and discussion about sex in Vietnam. There is also a general idea that from parents, the government, and school that …

The Path To Diagnosis: A Case Study Of Two Children With Autism, Maria Nagle
The Path To Diagnosis: A Case Study Of Two Children With Autism, Maria Nagle
Education Masters
In recent years there have been a growing number of individuals that are being diagnosed with autism. It is interesting that autism did not seem to be as prevalent in society just a few years ago. In order to best determine why autism is more common, the cause of autism must be examined. Currently, the exact cause of autism is unknown; however, the most likely theory at the time is genetics. Understating why autism occurs will help further research on why the number of individuals with autism might be growing. After reviewing the case studies of two families with children …
Understanding The Cost Of Horse Ownership, Tracey Renelt
Understanding The Cost Of Horse Ownership, Tracey Renelt
SDSU Extension Extra Archives
Even though many consider horse ownership a hobby and a pleasure, there are costs associated with owning a horse. In fact, it has been said that the cheapest part of horse ownership is the initial purchase. With that in mind, potential horse owners need to be aware of these costs upfront.
Integrated Pest Management Strategies For Grasshopper Management In South Dakota, Darrell L. Deneke, Justin Keyser
Integrated Pest Management Strategies For Grasshopper Management In South Dakota, Darrell L. Deneke, Justin Keyser
SDSU Extension Extra Archives
Historically, grasshoppers have been a chief insect enemy to farmers and ranchers in South Dakota and the United States. Although grasshoppers are a natural component of our ecosystem, with some even being beneficial, in large numbers they can have an econom¬ic impact on agricultural commodities. When grasshoppers reach threatening populations that are economically damaging to our crops and rangelands, we typically use chemicals (insecticide) as the main method of control. However, there are integrated pest management (IPM) strategies that have been developed over the years as an approach to con¬trolling such pests as grasshoppers. These IPM strate¬gies include using biological, …
Social Capital: The Glue That Holds A Community Together, Kari Freuchte
Social Capital: The Glue That Holds A Community Together, Kari Freuchte
SDSU Extension Extra Archives
What makes a community a desirable place to live? While the answer may have to do with resources, location, size, or jobs, people ultimately enjoy living where they feel connected and included. Social capital is that network of connections among individuals and organizations in a community, and even between communities themselves (fig. 1). Basically, social capital is the glue that holds a community together.
Community Capitals: Cultural Capital, Cheryl Jacobs
Community Capitals: Cultural Capital, Cheryl Jacobs
SDSU Extension Extra Archives
Cultural capital consists of symbols and language, festivals, celebrations, and events. Cultural capital is our shared identity, things that make us a feel like a community. Cultural capital gives each community its own distinctive character. Many communities have festivals celebrating their heritage and events and common community themes. Cultural capital is also formed when communities live through historic events together: for example, the Midwest in the “Dirty ‘30s” or a New York neighborhood following the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Cultural capital is part of our identity, our traditions, and our understanding of each other. Cultural capital can be …

As a yearlong exploration of air quality and its relation to respiratory health, the “Air Toxics Under the Big Sky” program offers opportunities for students to learn and apply science process skills through self-designed inquiry-based research projects conducted within their communities. The program follows a systematic scope and sequence designed to first lay a strong foundation, followed by activities intended to expand understanding, and ending with a final step aimed at achieving retention of content and principles learned. The foundation consists of content regarding environmental health sciences and human health. The next level guides students during their independent study projects …
