Community Capitals: Human Capital, Cheryl Jacobs
Community Capitals: Human Capital, Cheryl Jacobs

Investments in people are just as important, if not more important, than investments in the other commu¬nity capitals: “Human Capital includes those attributes of individuals that contribute to their ability to earn a living, strengthen community, and otherwise contribute to community organizations, to their families, and to self-improvement” (Flora et al. 2004).

SDSU Extension Extra Archives
Financial capital is often the easiest to measure, and it can be used to measure the other community capitals. Financial capital is money that is used for investment rather than consumption. Money is a tangible asset that can be measured: profits and losses can be tracked, and it is easily turned into other kinds of assets. Money can be used in two basic ways: (1) consumption, where money helps us to purchase goods and services; and (2) investment, where money earns interest which can be used to earn more money.

3-O-(3′,3′-Dimethylsuccinyl) betulinic acid (DSB), also known as PA-457, bevirimat (BVM), or MPC-4326, is a novel HIV-1 maturation inhibitor. Unlike protease inhibitors, BVM blocks the cleavage of the Gag capsid precursor (CA-SP1) to mature capsid (CA) protein, resulting in the release of immature, noninfectious viral particles. Despite the novel mechanism of action and initial progress made in small-scale clinical trials, further development of bevirimat has encountered unexpected challenges, because patients whose viruses contain genetic polymorphisms in the Gag SP1 (positions 6 to 8) protein do not generally respond well to BVM treatment. To better define the role of amino …
The Truth About Models: How Well Do Mechanical Models Mimic The Observed Gender Distributions In Two-Child Families?, William D. Stansfield, Matthew A. Carlton
The Truth About Models: How Well Do Mechanical Models Mimic The Observed Gender Distributions In Two-Child Families?, William D. Stansfield, Matthew A. Carlton
Biological Sciences
We question the use of mechanical models, such as coin flipping, to represent the probabilities of gender distributions in sibship families consisting of two children. Both the assumptions of the models and the reliability of the data should be evaluated. Using models without these critical evaluations may tend to perpetuate myths rather than elucidate biological realities.

The Challenges Of Balancing Careers And Family Life Facing College Women In Jordan, Anna Chang
The Challenges Of Balancing Careers And Family Life Facing College Women In Jordan, Anna Chang
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
The country of Jordan serves as one of the most progressive countries in the Middle East, yet Jordan has the lowest female economic participation rates out of all the countries in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Quantitatively, women’s higher education attainment equals and, in some cases, even surpasses that of men. However, their economic participation barely begins to compare to that of their male counterparts. The purpose of this study is to investigate the potential causes for this large gap, using qualitative evidence from the interviews of fifteen college women at the University of Jordan and regional …
The Aders’S Duikers (Cephalophus Adersi) Of Mnemba Island, Zanzibar: A Study Of The Behavior And Diet Of A Critically Endangered Species, Aviva Fiske
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Cephalophus adersi, commonly known as Aders's duiker, is an extremely rare, near endemic species to Unguja Island in the Zanzibar archipelago. It is a member of the suborder Ruminantia and is considered part of the red duiker family. C. adersi is critically endangered, and although it is protected by Zanzibari law, its population numbers have plummeted over the last thirty years due to hunting as well as habitat destruction and fragmentation. This study examines the behavior and ecology of a small population of Aders's duikers living on Mnemba, an island off the coast of the northeastern tip of Unguja. Four …
Influence Of Sexual Education On Sexual Behavior And Contraceptive Use Among 15 To 19 Year-Olds At Colégio Azevêdo Fernandes In Salvador, Brazil, Julia Still
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Although sexual health education provided by the government through schools has shown positive results, such as those distributed by the Brazilian Ministry of Health, it is not the only source, nor the most implemented source, in which adolescents are exposed to and gain knowledge on the subjects of sexual behavior and sexual health. Just as Article 24 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child details, parents, schools and communities play important roles in the process of sexual education and are required to provide guidance and direction to youth (Pan American Health Organization, 2010). In addition to sexual health …

Rise Of The Veil: Islamic Modernity And The Hui Woman, Zainab Khalid
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
The Hui are a familiar sight in most cities in China; famed for their qingzhen restaurants and their business acumen. Known usually as the “Chinese speaking Muslims,” they are separated from the nine other Muslim xiaoshu minzu by a reputation for assimilation and adaptability that is a matter of pride for Hui in urban areas.
A conversation with Hui women at Nancheng Mosque in Kunming revealed that they believed Hui to be at an advantage compared to other xiaoshu minzu because of their abilities to adapt and assimilate, “we are intelligent; we know what to do in order to survive …

Yongzhi Village: An Example For Sustainable Tourism And Development In Deqin County, Kiersten Brown
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Nestled beneath misty mountain peaks, among the Salween, Mekong, and Yangtze rivers, a beautiful Tibetan village lies. Alongside low-lying mountain creeks and waterfalls this village is in Deqin County of Yunnan’s Deqin Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture (Deqin TAP). The Deqin TAP is the most Northwest prefecture of Yunnan. Deqin boasts that 33% of its population is comprised of the dominant minority group, Tibetans. Deqin prefecture is comprised of three counties, Shangrila County, Deqin County, and Weixi County. Deqin County is mostly comprised of small Tibetan towns and villages like Yongzhi. About 100 families inhabit Yongzhi. The village is placed right along …

Geographic Variation In Temperature Tolerance As An Indicator Of Potential Population Responses To Climate Change, Cascade J.B. Sorte, Sierra J. Jones, Luke P. Miller
Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences
The temperature tolerances of individuals in geographically separated populations of a single species can be used as indicators of each population's potential to persist or become extinct in response to climate change. We evaluated the population-level variation in temperature tolerance in populations of several marine invertebrate taxa, including bryozoans, tunicates, bivalves, and gastropods, separated by distances of < 200 km to > 5000 km. We then combined physiological thermotolerance data with current temperature data and climate change predictions to predict which of these populations may be most vulnerable to future changes. In a trans-continental comparison of four subtidal epibenthic species, we show that populations on …
Feminine Quest For Individuality In Beowulf And Kate Chopin’S The Awakening, Semira Taheri
Feminine Quest For Individuality In Beowulf And Kate Chopin’S The Awakening, Semira Taheri
Journal of South Texas English Studies
A literary criticism of the epic poem "Beowulf" and the book "The Awakening," by Kate Chopin is presented. It explores the female characters in the literary works which describe two archetypes of women, passive and aggressive-independent. It is inferred that the authors of the literary works criticize the patriarchal culture of the society.

When Being Is Not A Burden: Naomi Ayala And The Re-Embodying Poetics Of Neo-Riqueña Discourse, Roberta Barki
Journal of South Texas English Studies
The article offers poetry criticism on the poems "Perfection" and "Crickets," by Puerto Rican poet Naomi Ayala. It is inferred that the poems of Ayala address various issues concerning genderized racialism against Puerto Ricans. The representations of mind and body fracturing in the poems are explained which reflect the internalization of U.S. colonial rhetoric.
The Semiotics Of Sexual Identity: Myth Vs. History, Mackenzie Schroth
The Semiotics Of Sexual Identity: Myth Vs. History, Mackenzie Schroth
Honors Projects in English and Cultural Studies
In this project, I argue that gay, lesbian, and bisexual (GLB) students majoring in liberal arts have a higher likelihood of being out and of feeling confident in their identity and manner of self-expression. On the other hand, GLB students majoring in business-related fields are more likely to either be closeted or to fit a very defined, stereotyped gay identity. I test my hypothesis by conducting a semiotic analysis of sexual identity and by looking to the history of sexual identity categories. I also survey and interview various students, both liberal arts and business majors, to determine their perceptions about …

A Preliminary Skos Implementation Of The Art And Architecture Thesaurus: Machine-Actionable Controlled Vocabulary For The Semantic Web, Eric A. Robinson
A Preliminary Skos Implementation Of The Art And Architecture Thesaurus: Machine-Actionable Controlled Vocabulary For The Semantic Web, Eric A. Robinson
Other Topics
This paper presents an experimental implementation of the Art and Architecture Thesaurus, a knowledge organizational system for the visual arts and architecture, within the SKOS (Simple Knowledge Organization System) framework. Such treatment allows for machine-actionability on thesaurus records for automated expansion of search queries and also provides a framework for interoperability across metadata schemas in a linked data environment. SKOS enables more complex semantic processing by utilizing a simple framework for Semantic Web technology within thesauri. The analysis establishes an application profile for AAT, which accommodates the faceted and polyhierarchical structure of the thesaurus, as well as the detailed source …
Cognitive Relatives Yet Moral Strangers?, Judith Benz-Scharzberg, Andrew Knight
Cognitive Relatives Yet Moral Strangers?, Judith Benz-Scharzberg, Andrew Knight
Animal Welfare Collection
This article provides an empirically based, interdisciplinary approach to the following two questions: Do animals possess behavioral and cognitive characteristics such as culture, language, and a theory of mind? And if so, what are the implications, when long-standing criteria used to justify differences in moral consideration between humans and animals are no longer considered indisputable? One basic implication is that the psychological needs of captive animals should be adequately catered for. However, for species such as great apes and dolphins with whom we share major characteristics of personhood, welfare considerations alone may not suffice, and consideration of basic rights may …
