Reactivation Phenotypes Of Parent Strain And Four Viral Constructs In The Murine Hyperthermia Reactivation Model For Herpes Simplex Virus-1, Jason Hardcastle
Student Theses and Dissertations
Herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1) is the source of non-genital herpes infections in humans. The host typically suffers an acute infection followed by latency, in which the host appears asymptomatic as the virus remains present within the host. The virus can reactivate, usually due to physiological stress of the host, which once again becomes symptomatic of herpes. This study examines the role of the reactivation critical region (RCR) by removing a 348-base pair (bp) region transcribing latency-associated transcripts (LAT) from the wild-type HSV-1 strain (17syn+). Upon reactivation, the mice infected with the 17syn+ strain exhibited an 89% reactivation rate while the …

Aging constitutes a major independent risk factor for the development of type 2 diabetes and is accompanied by insulin resistance and adipose tissue dysfunction. One of the most important factors implicitly linked to aging and age-related chronic diseases is the accumulation of oxidative stress. However, the effect of increased oxidative stress on adipose tissue biology remains elusive. In this study, we demonstrate that aging in mice results in a loss of fat mass and the accumulation of oxidative stress in adipose tissue. In vitro, increased oxidative stress through glutathione depletion inhibits preadipocyte differentiation. This inhibition of adipogenesis is at …

Involvement Of Protein Kinase C And Protein Kinase A In The Enhancement Of L-Type Calcium Current By GabaB Receptor Activation In Neonatal Hippocampus, Jennifer Grace Bray, Michelle Mynlieff
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
In the early neonatal period activation of GABAB receptors attenuates calcium current through N-type calcium channels while enhancing current through L-type calcium channels in rat hippocampal neurons. The attenuation of N-type calcium current has been previously demonstrated to occur through direct interactions of the βγ subunits of Gi/o G-proteins, but the signal transduction pathway for the enhancement of L-type calcium channels in mammalian neurons remains unknown. In the present study, calcium currents were elicited in acute cultures from postnatal day 6–8 rat hippocampi in the presence of various modulators of protein kinase A (PKA) and protein kinase C …
Offline Optimization Of Advance Reservation Of Bandwidth Over Dynamic Circuit Networks, Pragatheeswaran Angu
Offline Optimization Of Advance Reservation Of Bandwidth Over Dynamic Circuit Networks, Pragatheeswaran Angu
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
E-science projects require very high-speed and reliable networks to transfer data across various destinations in the world. Dynamic Circuit Network (DCN) is a networking service to make advance reservation of bandwidth between a source and a destination in a network. In this thesis we solve the problem of advance reservation of bandwidth in next-generation wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) networks using a simulation based approach.
We implement a greedy algorithm and a genetic algorithm in parallel, in separate threads. The request for advance reservation is processed by both but the user gets the response only from the greedy algorithm. The genetic algorithm …

Poetry And Diversity: The Power Of Miserly Words In Teaching, Samuel Hinton
Poetry And Diversity: The Power Of Miserly Words In Teaching, Samuel Hinton
Curriculum and Instruction Faculty and Staff Scholarship
I share perspectives on selected everyday issues that have a multicultural import. Some of the poems presented are from The Road To Kenema And Other Poems (2003). I contend that there is a connection between poetry and diversity, and that teachers could use poetry to introduce difficult topics, and develop critical thinking with their students in all disciplines.

Effect Of Balanced Protein Energy Supplementation During Pregnancy On Birth Outcomes, Aamer Imdad, Zulfiqar Ahmed Bhutta
Effect Of Balanced Protein Energy Supplementation During Pregnancy On Birth Outcomes, Aamer Imdad, Zulfiqar Ahmed Bhutta
Woman and Child Health
Background:The nutritional status of the mother prior to and during pregnancy plays a vital role in fetal growth and development, and maternal undernourishment may lead to adverse perinatal outcomes including intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). Several macronutrient interventions had been proposed for adequate protein and energy supplementation during pregnancy. The objective of this paper was to review the effect of balanced protein energy supplementation during pregnancy on birth outcomes. This paper is a part of a series of reviews undertaken for getting estimates of effectiveness of an intervention for input to Lives Saved Tool (LiST) model.
Methods:

Effect Of Routine Iron Supplementation With Or Without Folic Acid On Anemia During Pregnancy, Mohammad Yawar Yakoob, Zulfiqar Ahmed Bhutta
Effect Of Routine Iron Supplementation With Or Without Folic Acid On Anemia During Pregnancy, Mohammad Yawar Yakoob, Zulfiqar Ahmed Bhutta
Woman and Child Health
Introduction:Iron deficiency is the most prevalent nutrient deficiency in the world, particularly during pregnancy. According to the literature, anemia, particularly severe anemia, is associated with increased risk of maternal mortality. It also puts mothers at risk of multiple perinatal complications. Numerous studies in the past have evaluated the impact of supplementation with iron and iron-folate but data regarding the efficacy and quality of evidence of these interventions are lacking. This article aims to address the impact of iron with and without folate supplementation on maternal anemia and provides outcome specific quality according to the Child Health Epidemiology Reference Group …
Effect Of Multiple Micronutrient Supplementation During Pregnancy On Maternal And Birth Outcomes, Batool Azra Haider, Mohammad Yawar Yakoob, Zulfiqar Ahmed Bhutta
Effect Of Multiple Micronutrient Supplementation During Pregnancy On Maternal And Birth Outcomes, Batool Azra Haider, Mohammad Yawar Yakoob, Zulfiqar Ahmed Bhutta
Woman and Child Health
Objectives/Background:Given the widespread prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies in developing countries, supplementation with multiple micronutrients rather than iron-folate alone, could be of potential benefit to the mother and the fetus. These benefits could relate to prevention of maternal complications and reduction in other adverse pregnancy outcomes such as small-for-gestational age (SGA) births, low birth weight, stillbirths, perinatal and neonatal mortality. This review evaluates the evidence of the impact of multiple micronutrient supplements during pregnancy, in comparison with standard iron-folate supplements, on specific maternal and pregnancy outcomes of relevance to the Lives Saved Tool (LiST). Data sources/review methods: A systematic review …

Effectiveness Of Interventions To Screen And Manage Infections During Pregnancy On Reducing Stillbirths: A Review, Sidra Ishaque, Mohammad Yawar Yakoob, Aamer Imdad, Robert L. Goldenberg, Thomas P. Eisele, Zulfiqar Ahmed Bhutta
Woman and Child Health
Background:Infection is a well acknowledged cause of stillbirths and may account for about half of all perinatal deaths today, especially in developing countries. This review presents the impact of interventions targeting various important infections during pregnancy on stillbirth or perinatal mortality.
Methods: We undertook a systematic review including all relevant literature on interventions dealing with infections during pregnancy for assessment of effects on stillbirths or perinatal mortality. The quality of the evidence was assessed using the adapted Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach by Child Health Epidemiology Reference Group (CHERG). For the outcome of interest, namely …
