Insecta Mundi

From 1995 to 2004 collections for Bruchidae (Coleoptera) were made in La Reserva de la Biósfera Sierra de Huautla, Morelos, Mexico. Specimens were reared from mature seedpods, but also collected by net, malaise trap, and light trap. In total 72 species in 13 genera of Bruchidae were recovered. Of those two new species are here described: Amblycerus montalvoi Romero and Acanthoscelides camerinoi Romero. We record 27 host plants for the bruchids found in the study area.

Self-Adaptors And Gaze Aversion: Cues Of Deception In Culturally Deaf College Students, Grady Matthew Gallagher Apr 2011

Self-Adaptors And Gaze Aversion: Cues Of Deception In Culturally Deaf College Students, Grady Matthew Gallagher

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

This study examines the impact of deception on gaze aversion and self-adaptors among culturally Deaf college students. Sixteen participants were randomly assigned to either truth telling scenarios or deceptive scenarios. Telling the truth or a lie did not have a significant effect on the rate of gaze aversion. However, among all subjects, regardless of whether they told the truth or lied, the rate of gaze aversion more than doubled when the confederate directly questioned them about the test answers. Deception had no effect on the rate of self-adaptors among subjects and between groups. These findings indicate that self-adaptors are not …

Wetland Management Guidelines For Nebraska's Wildlife Management Areas, Ted Lagrange, Randy Stutheit Apr 2011

Wetland Management Guidelines For Nebraska's Wildlife Management Areas, Ted Lagrange, Randy Stutheit

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

Prior to Euro-American settlement, wetlands covered about 6% of the Nebraska landscape. Since settlement, the state’s wetlands have suffered serious decline. For example, approximately 90% of Rainwater Basin playa wetlands and 90% of the eastern saline wetlands have been destroyed or are highly degraded. Remaining wetlands are threatened by conversion to other uses (e.g. agriculture), invasive and aggressive vegetation, siltation, and lack of proper management. Only through sound management can the wetlands on our Wildlife Management Areas (WMA) be preserved for the citizens of Nebraska, as well as the native plants and wildlife dependent on them.

This section is directed …

Dual-Channel Imaging System For Singlet Oxygen And Photosensitizer For Pdt, Seonkyung Lee, Martin E. Isabelle, Kristin L. Gabally-Kinney, Brian W. Pogue, Steven J. Davis Apr 2011

Dual-Channel Imaging System For Singlet Oxygen And Photosensitizer For Pdt, Seonkyung Lee, Martin E. Isabelle, Kristin L. Gabally-Kinney, Brian W. Pogue, Steven J. Davis

Dartmouth Scholarship

A two-channel optical system has been developed to provide spatially resolved simultaneous imaging of singlet molecular oxygen (1O2) phosphorescence and photosensitizer (PS) fluorescence produced by the photodynamic process. The current imaging system uses a spectral discrimination method to differentiate the weak 1O2 phosphorescence that peaks near 1.27 μ m from PS fluorescence that also occurs in this spectral region. The detection limit of 1O2 emission was determined at a concentration of 500 nM benzoporphyrin derivative monoacid (BPD) in tissue-like phantoms, and these signals observed were proportional to the PS fluorescence. Preliminary in …

Salisbury, James Águila Soria, Raquel Espinosa Linares, Enzo Pinedo Ramírez, Luís Rosero Flores, Miguel Núnez Sánchez, Gerardo Cavero Oroche, Jorge Vela Alvarado, Oscar Barreto Vásquez, Giraldo Almeida Villanueva, Carlos Pérez Alván

Geography and the Environment Poster Presentations

On June 5th 2009, an estimated thirty people died in a clash between governmental authorities and indigenous people near Bagua, Peru. Termed the "Bagua Massacre," this event underscores the marginalized role of Indigenous Amazonians when confronting multinational commercial interests supported by the state (Shepard, 2009). The indigenous people were protesting the “Law of the Jungle,” Decree 1090, a 2009 decree assuming heavily-forested indigenous lands idle and unproductive, and providing the legal basis to privatize comunally-held forests to facilitate petroleum, biofuel, hydroelectric and logging projects. Since contact, the assumption of indigenous people unproductively managing their forested homelands has fueled colonization, deforestation, …

Turing Instability In Discrete Replicator Systems, Alex Bryce Apr 2011

Turing Instability In Discrete Replicator Systems, Alex Bryce

Theses

When analyzing a discrete reaction-diffusion dynamical system, one primary area of interest is locating where in the parameter space Turing instabilities occur. It will be shown that Turing instabilities cannot occur in the react then diffuse equations if all diffusion coefficients are equal. The replicator dynamic is a system of equations that is used in evolutionary game theory applications to study behavior types in animal populations. Conditions for a Turing instability in first order discrete replicator systems will be discussed and illustrated with computer simulations of the results.

Molecular Structures Of Prrsv That Contribute To Prrsv Protective Immunity, Asit K. Pattnaik

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

One of the objectives of the proposal is to delineate the regions of the two glycoproteins (GP2 and GP4) of PRRSV that interact with CD163. Other objectives of the proposal are to generate antibodies to these small regions of the glycoproteins as well as to the full-length proteins for future studies to determine if any of these antibodies possess PRRSV neutralizing activity.

To carry out the studies in the proposed objectives, we generated a series of mutants of GP2 as well as GP4 proteins in which various regions were specifically removed by manipulating the plasmids encoding these proteins. We then …

Effects Of Rodent Species, Seed Species, And Predator Cues On Seed Fate, Kelly J. Sivy, Steven M. Ostoja, Eugene W. Schupp, Susan Durham Apr 2011

Effects Of Rodent Species, Seed Species, And Predator Cues On Seed Fate, Kelly J. Sivy, Steven M. Ostoja, Eugene W. Schupp, Susan Durham

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Seed selection, removal and subsequent management by granivorous animals is thought to be a complex interaction of factors including qualities of the seeds themselves (e.g., seed size, nutritional quality) and features of the local habitat (e.g. perceived predator risk). At the same time, differential seed selection and dispersal is thought to have profound effects on seed fate and potentially vegetation dynamics. In a feeding arena, we tested whether rodent species, seed species, and indirect and direct predation cues influence seed selection and handling behaviors (e.g., scatter hoarding versus larder hoarding) of two heteromyid rodents, Ord’s kangaroo rat (Dipodomys ordii) and …

Biodeterioration Of Coastal Concrete Structures By Macro Algae - Ulva Fasciata, Stri Hari Babu Jayakumar, Rama Saravanane, Thirumalai Sundararajan Apr 2011

Biodeterioration Of Coastal Concrete Structures By Macro Algae - Ulva Fasciata, Stri Hari Babu Jayakumar, Rama Saravanane, Thirumalai Sundararajan

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Puducherry is a coastal region in India where the growth of Ulva fasciata (Delile) is very abundant on all marine structures. Though the detrimental effect of this macro algae U. fasciata is a secondary one, its effect has to be investigated. To know its effect, the basic mechanism by which U. fasciata deteriorates concrete structures has been highlighted. To ascertain its detrimental effect on coastal concrete structures, M20 grade concrete cubes were casted and immersed in the coastal area where there is abundant growth of U. fasciata. In addition laboratory simulation has been carried out. Concrete samples collected from the …

Determining The Composition Of The Dwelling Tubes Of Antarctic Pterobranchs, Lukasz J. Sewera Apr 2011

Determining The Composition Of The Dwelling Tubes Of Antarctic Pterobranchs, Lukasz J. Sewera

Honors Projects

Pterobranchs are a group of marine invertebrates within the Hemichordata, which share characteristics with both chordates and echinoderms.  Pterobranchs live in colonies of secreted tubes, coenicia, which are composed of a gelatinous material of unknown composition.  Visually, the tubes appear similar to the tunic of tunicates, a group of invertebrates within the Chordata. The nonproteinaceous tunic of tunicates is composed of cellulose, which is unusual.  The goal of this study was to determine the composition of the pterobranch coenicium. Some aspects of pterobranch phylogeny are still unclear even after multiple molecular and morphological studies.  Identification of any new shared characteristics …

Integration Scaffolding In Hypermedia Learning, Amy Marcelle Johnson Apr 2011

Integration Scaffolding In Hypermedia Learning, Amy Marcelle Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This dissertation project used 80 undergraduate students to examine the effectiveness of three forms of facilitation in hypermedia learning with text and diagrams about the human circulatory system: 1) signaling key terms, 2) prompted referencing of diagrammatic representations, and 3) integration scaffolding which provided facilitation in locating corresponding components within diagrams. These three experimental manipulations were compared to a control condition in which learners used the same hypermedia learning environment, without any facilitative feature in coordinating between text and diagrams. Two measures captured differences in learning: 1) a multiple choice pretest and posttest of declarative and conceptual knowledge and 2) …

Traversing Swanton Road, 5th Ed., James A. West Apr 2011

Traversing Swanton Road, 5th Ed., James A. West

Academic, Government & Associated Organizational Research Resources

Situated at the northwest end of Santa Cruz County and occupying circa 30 square miles of sharply contrasted terrain, the Scott Creek Watershed concentrates within its geomorphological boundaries, at least 10-12% of California's flora, both native and introduced. Paradoxically, the use/abuse that the watershed has sustained over the past 140+ years, has not necessarily diminished the biodiversity and perhaps parallels the naturally disruptive but biologically energizing processes (fire, flooding, landslides and erosion), which have also been historically documented for the area for +60 years. This is an early edition of an extensive document by James A. West. Please visit the …
