Impact Of Vitamin A Supplementation On Infant And Childhood Mortality, Aamer Imdad, Mohammad Yawar Yakoob, Christopher Sudfeld, Batool A. Haider, Robert E. Black, Zulfiqar Ahmed Bhutta

Woman and Child Health

Introduction:Vitamin A is important for the integrity and regeneration of respiratory and gastrointestinal epithelia and is involved in regulating human immune function. It has been shown previously that vitamin A has a preventive effect on all-cause and disease specific mortality in children under five. The Purpose of this paper was to get a point estimate of efficacy of vitamin A supplementation in reducing cause specific mortality by using Child Health Epidemiology Reference Group (CHERG) guidelines.

Methods:

A literature search was done on PubMed, Cochrane Library and WHO regional data bases using various free and Mesh terms for vitamin A …

Lee, Simon Cousens, Stephen N. Wall, Susan Niermeyer, Gary L. Darmstadt, Waldemar A. Carlo, William J. Keenan, Zulfiqar Ahmed Bhutta, Christopher Gill, Joy E. Lawn

Woman and Child Health

Background: Of 136 million babies born annually, around 10 million require assistance to breathe. Each year 814,000 neonatal deaths result from intrapartum-related events in term babies (previously "birth asphyxia") and 1.03 million from complications of prematurity. No systematic assessment of mortality reduction from tactile stimulation or resuscitation has been published. Objective:To estimate the mortality effect of immediate newborn assessment and stimulation, and basic resuscitation on neonatal deaths due to term intrapartum-related events or preterm birth, for facility and home births.

Methods:

We conducted systematic reviews for studies reporting relevant mortality or morbidity outcomes. Evidence was assessed using GRADE criteria …

The Effect Of Folic Acid, Protein Energy And Multiple Micronutrient Supplements In Pregnancy On Stillbirths, Aamer Imdad, Mohammad Yawar Yakoob, Zulfiqar Ahmed Bhutta

Woman and Child Health

Background:Pregnancy is a state of increased requirement of macro-and micronutrients, and malnourishment or inadequate dietary intake before and during pregnancy, can lead to adverse perinatal outcomes including stillbirths. Many nutritional interventions have been proposed during pregnancy according to the nutritional status of the mother and baseline risk factors for different gestational disorders. In this paper, we have reviewed three nutritional interventions including peri-conceptional folic acid supplementation, balanced protein energy supplementation and multiple micronutrients supplementation during pregnancy. This paper is a part of a series to estimate the effect of interventions on stillbirths for input to Live Saved Tool (LiST) …

Trypanosoma Cruzi - Derived Sugar Epitopes - Synthesis And Immunology, Erika Y. Monroy^, Roger A. Ashmus, Jamal Khamsi, Andrew Pardo, Nathaniel S. Schocker, Rosa A. Maldonado, Kayla Vasquez, Alexandre F. Marques, Igor C. Almeida, Katja Michael*

COURI Symposium Abstracts, Spring 2011

The protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi is the causative agent of Chagas disease. As of today no effective vaccine has been developed for it. Certain developmental stages of T.cruzi express cell surface oligosaccharides with terminal alpha-galactosyl and rhamnosyl residues, which are believed to be highly immunogenic in humans. The exact structures and sizes of these epitopes are still unknown. Our quest is to shine light on the chemical structures of immunogenic alpha-Gal and alpha-Rha containing mono-, di-, and trisaccharides that are conjugated to a keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH) carrier protein through a combination of chemical synthesis and immunological studies. The compounds …

Estrogenic Regulation Of The Immune System In A Murine Model For Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Matthew James Zuber Apr 2011

Estrogenic Regulation Of The Immune System In A Murine Model For Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Matthew James Zuber

Biology Honors Papers

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus is a damaging autoimmune disease afflicting millions of people worldwide. Lupus is characterized by an overabundance of autoantibodies, proteins directing the immune system to destroy a person's own body, what it would normally be protecting. The molecular mechanisms, environmental influences, and genetic predispositions of Lupus are not yet fully understood. However, nine out of ten Lupus patients are women between the age of puberty and menopause, when estrogen levels are highest. The fact that women are significantly more prone to suffer from Lupus than men leads experts to believe that the sex hormone estrogen which is present …

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Wind energy offers the potential to reduce carbon emissions while increasing energy independence and bolstering economic development. However, wind energy has a larger land footprint per Gigawatt (GW) than most other forms of energy production, making appropriate siting and mitigation particularly important. Species that require large unfragmented habitats and those known to avoid vertical structures are particularly at risk from wind development. Developing energy on disturbed lands rather than placing new developments within large and intact habitats would reduce cumulative impacts to wildlife. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that it will take 241 GW of terrestrial based wind development …

There is a persistent need for high resolution photographic and bathymetric maps of the sea floor for many research areas in marine geology, biology and archaeology. This poster will present recent work using high frequency multibeam sonars, stereo vision and structured light laser imaging techniques to create maps with centimeter resolution for these applications. This research involves the development of new image and sonar processing techniques that combat the typical difficulties of imperfect navigation information, limited sensor ranges and adverse environmental conditions associated with using marine robotic vehicles in the ocean. Data for this work has been collected with the …

Effect Of Case Management On Neonatal Mortality Due To Sepsis And Pneumonia, Anita K. M. Zaidi, Hammad A. Ganatra, Sana Syed, Simon Cousens, Anne C. C. Lee, Robert Black, Zulfiqar A. Bhutta, Joy E. Lawn Apr 2011

Effect Of Case Management On Neonatal Mortality Due To Sepsis And Pneumonia, Anita K. M. Zaidi, Hammad A. Ganatra, Sana Syed, Simon Cousens, Anne C. C. Lee, Robert Black, Zulfiqar A. Bhutta, Joy E. Lawn

Department of Paediatrics and Child Health

Background: Each year almost one million newborns die from infections, mostly in low-income countries. Timely case management would save many lives but the relative mortality effect of varying strategies is unknown. We have estimated the effect of providing oral, or injectable antibiotics at home or in first-level facilities, and of in-Patient hospital care on neonatal mortality from pneumonia and sepsis for use in the Lives Saved Tool (LiST). Methods: We conducted systematic searches of multiple databases to identify relevant studies with mortality data. Standardized abstraction tables were used and study quality assessed by adapted GRADE criteria. Meta-analyses were undertaken where …

Fluorescence Switching With Photochromic Oxazines, Erhan Deniz Apr 2011

Fluorescence Switching With Photochromic Oxazines, Erhan Deniz

Open Access Dissertations

Fluorescence microscopy offers the opportunity to image noninvasively biological samples in real time. However, the phenomenon of diffraction limits the resolution of conventional fluorescence microscopes to submicrometer dimensions in both the horizontal and vertical directions. This limitation can be overcome by photoswitchable fluorescent probes able to undergo reversible saturable optically linear fluorescence transitions (RESOLFT). In this study, firstly, a photoswitchable fluorescent probe based on BODIPY fluorophore and Spiropyran photochrome were designed and its photophysical and photochemical properties were investigated in organic and aqueous environments. Also, its imaging with patterned illumination was showed by trapping them in PMMA matrix. Secondly, photochromic …

The Role Of Habitat In Crocodilian Communication, Vladimir Dinets Apr 2011

The Role Of Habitat In Crocodilian Communication, Vladimir Dinets

Open Access Dissertations

Crocodilians (crocodiles, alligators, caimans and gharials) have a particular category of signals used for long-distance communication of location and status. These signals are composed of acoustic and non-acoustic components with different physical properties, such as vocal sounds, slaps, infrasound, odor and postures. A survey of extant species and a comparative study of allopatric conspecific populations inhabiting different habitats show that the composition of these signals is adjusted to optimize their ability to carry information in each habitat. Studies of animals living in changing habitats and of animals inhabiting different habitats within the same geographical areas show that these adaptations are …

American Women And The Modern Summer Olympic Games: A Story Of Obstacles And Struggles For Participation And Equality, Cecile Houry Apr 2011

American Women And The Modern Summer Olympic Games: A Story Of Obstacles And Struggles For Participation And Equality, Cecile Houry

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on American women and the modern summer Olympic Games. It retraces the history of women's participation in this significant and global sporting event to study the obstacles generated by social, economic, political, and cultural gender patterns while providing a forum for female Olympians to give voice to their journeys and how they dealt with and eventually overcame some of these obstacles. The findings herein support other scholarly works, arguing that despite progress, the Olympic Games, and by extension the institution of sport in general, is and will remain a hegemonic space that allows men to maintain and …

A Broad Symmetry Criterion For Nonparametric Validity Of Parametrically-Based Tests In Randomized Trials, Russell T. Shinohara, Constantine E. Frangakis, Constantine G.. Lyketos

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

Summary. Pilot phases of a randomized clinical trial often suggest that a parametric model may be an accurate description of the trial's longitudinal trajectories. However, parametric models are often not used for fear that they may invalidate tests of null hypotheses of equality between the experimental groups. Existing work has shown that when, for some types of data, certain parametric models are used, the validity for testing the null is preserved even if the parametric models are incorrect. Here, we provide a broader and easier to check characterization of parametric models that can be used to (a) preserve nonparametric validity …
