The main aim of the present study was to determine the distribution of XRCC1 Arg399Gln genotypes in oral cancer and non-oral cancer patients. This study was also to investigate the association between XRCC1 Arg399Gln genotypes and oral cancer risk and to compare the distribution of XRCC1 Arg399Gln genotypes among different ethnic groups in Malaysia. This case-control study involved a total of 209 cases of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) patients and 212 controls with neither any trace of cancers nor any family history of cancer. The work starts at developing a 600 joules small plasma focus based on previous experience and works on the 3 kJ plasma focus system [Lee et al. (1988), Favre et al. (1992), Moo et al. The primary role of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) gene is to regulate immune cells. Dysregulation and, in particular, overproduction of this gene has been found to increase susceptibility to a variety of human diseases such as cancer. The aim of this study is to investigate the association of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in TNF-α −308 promoter and the risk of oral cancer among the Malaysian Indian and Indigenous population.The study included 143 confirmed oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) (mean age = 63.69 ± 12.84) and 79 healthy controls (mean age = 50.43 ± 16.35). Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are among the enzymes involved in the phase II detoxification metabolism of wide range exogenous and endogenous compounds in living cells. Bivalves GSTs often proposed as biomarker for marine pollution detection for several reasons; filter feeder, sessile, wide range distribution, and not affected by some biotic factors. In this study, GSTs from remis Donax sp. was purified by using two affinity column; GSTrapTMHP and GSH-agarose (C3). The total recovery of CDNB-active GSTs was 12% and 3% for GSTrapTMHP and GSH-agarose (C3), respectively. Coral reef research in Peninsular Malaysia has mainly been concentrated on the east coast with little emphasis on the Straits of Malacca (SOM) in the west coast. The coral reefs in SOM are extremely important, more so than their east coast counterparts due to the fact that they are only a few viable coral reef ecosystems in SOM. This study was done to determine the inhibitory activity that were exhibited by different parts of the local plants in Malaysia selected from the 4 families which are Leguminosae, Rubiaceae, Apocynaceae and Euphorbiaceae. The screening method used in this study are Bradford Assay and Trypsin Inhibitory Assay. Both these assays revealed that Senna surattensis leaves showed the highest inhibitory activity of 83 % compared to other 41 plant samples studied in this study. The aim of the present study is to investigate the biological activities of two selected wild Alpinia species namely, Alpinia pahangensis Ridl. and Alpinia mutica Roxb. Extraction of the rhizomes and leaves was done successively using three solvents with different polarity: hexane, dichloromethane and methanol. The crude extracts were tested for their antimicrobial and antioxidant activities. The antioxidant activity was determined using the DPPH free radical scavenging method. Genomic library of Hylocereus undatus was successfully constructed using Lambda Bacteriophage FIX II vector kit (Stratagene) which resulted in titer of 4 x 104 pfu/ml. One week old leaflets from seed germination were used for DNA extraction. This method ensures sustainable supply of material for DNA extraction and the yield of the DNA was 975 μg/g of leaf material. The white colour pellet indicates that it was free from contaminants which were supported by a spectrophotometer reading (A260 nm/A280 nm ratio of 1.92) and agarose gel electrophoresis showing intact genomic DNA. Beta vulgaris has been commonly consumed and traditionally used for various medicinal purposes. The present study scientifically evaluates the antioxidant and cytotoxic potential of the plant using various bioassays. The root part of Beta vulgaris was collected and extracted using methanol and then fractionated with hexane, ethyl acetate and water. This thesis proposed a new distribution to model under-, equi- and overdispersion in count data. It arises as a particular case of a modified random walk on the plane, and includes the binomial, negative binomial and shifted negative binomial as special cases. Some properties, test of hypothesis for equi-dispersion, simulation study of power, parameter estimation by maximum likelihood and a squared distance method based on the probability generating function are considered. As cellulosic material is the most abundant and renewable source of organic matter, ethanol can be produced cheaply from cellulosic waste. The cellulose must be hydrolyzed to glucose before it can be fermented to ethanol. The enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose using cellulase enzymes is considered an environmental- friendly and less energy intensive alternative. The adsorption of Cr(VI) ions from aqueous solution by β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) based polymer as an adsorbent was studied in a batch adsorptions experiments. Three types of adsorbent were synthesized, namely, β-CDCP-HMDI, β-CDCP-TDI and Si-TDI-βCD. The method was based on the complex reaction of Cr(VI) with 1,5-diphenylcarbazide (DPC) in acidic solution loaded on β-CDCP-HMDI and β-CDCP-TDI and Si-TDI-βCD. The adsorption isotherm and kinetics of the three adsorbent were studied. Equilibrium isotherm was analyzed according to classic Langmuir and Freundlich model. The alkaloidal content of Malaysian plant, Alstonia angustiloba Miq., was investigated and the results are summarized as below (Table). A total of 20 alkaloids were isolated and characterized, of which, three were new alkaloids, viz., angustilobine C (1), andransinine (2), and angustiphylline (3). Angustilobine C (1) and andransinine (2) are alkaloids of the angustilobine- and andranginine type, respectively, while angustiphylline (3) is a new bisindole alkaloid constituted from the union of uleine and secovallesamine moieties. The non-covalent interaction of beta-cyclodextrin (β-CD), dithizone (H2Dz) and dithizone-zinc (H2Dz-Zn) complex was studied in detail. Solid samples were studied using solid state 13C Cross Polarization and Magic Angle Spinning spectroscopy (13C CP/MAS NMR), Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Thermal Gravimetric Analysis (TGA), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Powder X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) to investigate the formation of the inclusion complex. Spent Mushroom Sawdust Substrate (SMSS) was appraised for its potential as a lignocellulosic waste source for conversion of to bioethanol. Aqueous perchloric acid is used to hydrolyze the lignocellulosic waste feedstock to simple sugars which are then fermented to ethanol. Aqueous perchloric acid was chosen as the medium for conversion of SMSS to sugars as it can hydrolyze the recalcitrant cellulosic biomass to give a significant amount of glucose without the need for strong heating or the application of pressure. The in vitro study was conducted to determine the antioxidant activity of R. tomentosa in water, methanol, chloroform and petroleum ether extract. In DPPH assay, methanol extract had the highest antioxidant capacity with IC50 of 107μg/ml. Antioxidant activity of R. tomentosa measured using FRAP assay also showed that methanol extract had the highest antioxidant capacity 0.162nm at concentration of 500μg/ml. While in Metal Chelating assay again showed methanol extract had the most chelating ability of all extracts with 36% at concentration of 100μg/ml. The study investigates the problematic English coda consonant clusters which Arabic speakers have in pronouncing English. This investigation involves a constraint-based analysis of interlanguage syllable structure within the optimality framework to see how the native language (NL) interferes in L2 pronunciation. The study presents an analysis of interlanguage (IL) syllable structure and answers a question in how NL interfere in Arabic speakers articulation of ESL syllable structure. The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of Gibberellic Acid (GA3), Naphthalene Acetic Acid (NAA) and N-2-chloro-4-pyridyl-N-phenylurea (CPPU) on the growth and quality development of water apple/ wax apple (Syzygium samarangense).
