The Analgesic Effect Of The Ethanolic Extract Of Matricaria Aurea, Esam Qnais
Turkish Journal of Biology
The analgesic effect of the ethanolic whole plant extract of Matricaria aurea L. (Asteraceae) was studied in rats using the cold water tail flick assay and in mice using the tail immersion, tail clip, acetic-acid-induced writhing, and formalin pain tests. The results showed dose-dependent and significant (P < 0.001) increases in pain threshold at 60 min post-treatment with doses of 100, 200, and 300 mg/kg of the extract in tail flick, tail immersion, and tail clip tests. The effects of the extract were significantly (P < 0.001) lower than those produced by morphine (10 mg/kg) in the same tests. The extract (100, 200, and 300 mg/kg) exhibited a dose-dependent inhibition of writhing and also showed a significant (P < 0.001) inhibition in both phases of the formalin pain test, but with a less intense effect in the first phase. The results indicate that the analgesic effect of M. aurea ethanolic extract is both centrally and peripherally mediated.

RNA interference (RNAi) pathway is a gene silencing process during which small double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) molecules trigger the degradation of homologous RNA targets. Small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) are the mediators of the RNAi that can be induced in vitro and in vivo by direct application of chemically synthesized siRNAs. Recently, promoter-targeted small non-coding RNAs have been described to be capable of regulating gene expression at the transcriptional level. In the present study we tested the hypothesis that Dicer-substrate siRNAs (D-siRNAs), which trigger gene silencing through intrinsic RNAi pathway and are therefore more potent in gene knockdown than traditionally used 21-23mer …

Turkish Journal of Biology
Venom from the endoparasitoid Pimpla turionellae L. (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) contains a mixture of biologically active components, which display potent paralytic, cytotoxic, and cytolytic effects towards hosts. Here, we further investigate if parasitism or envenomation by P. turionellae alters total protein of its host Galleria mellonella L. (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). Various venom concentrations representing doses previously determined to yield host responses yet fall below the calculated LD99 were used for pupae and larvae. Parasitization was only assayed for host pupa since P. turionellae females normally parasitize host prepupae and pupae in nature. Hemolymph total protein concentration remained relatively steady at all doses …

We analyzed the effects of sodium hypochlorite and Plant Preservative Mixture (PPM) on surface sterilization. We also examined the effects that the addition of an antibiotic-antimycotic solution to the culture medium had on callus induction. Explants were initially sterilized with different concentrations of sodium hypochlorite and cultured on MS media containing kinetin (0.29 \muM) and naphthalene acetic acid (NAA, 10 \muM). No calluses were produced, either because of contamination of the explants, or loss of explants as a result of the high levels of sodium hypochlorite. The application of PPM and antibiotics at different concentrations reduced contamination and led to …

The present study was designed to assess the antioxidant potential of the juices of 3 papaya cultivars (PCJ): Sunrise Solo, Red Lady, and Tainung. The antioxidant capacity of PCJ obtained from fully ripened fruit was determined by the following methods: scavenging of the free radical 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), reducing power assay, scavenging of superoxide radicals, 2-deoxyribose oxidation assay, and thiocyanate assay. Total phenolic content (TPC) of PCJ was determined by the Folin-Ciocalteu method. In the DPPH assay (IC_{50} values), the effect of Sunrise …

The chemical composition and nutritional value of a wild edible ectomycorrhizal mushroom from southwestern Anatolia, Tricholoma anatolicum, were analyzed. Moisture, crude oil, protein, ash, total carbohydrate content, and mineral composition of the mushrooms studied, including Fe, Na, K, Zn, Cu, Ca, Cd, and Pb, were determined. The energy values of the samples were also calculated. The analyses were conducted during the 3 different growing stages of the mushrooms: mycelium, young fruiting bodies, and mature fruiting bodies. The highest values for moisture and crude oil contents were found to be in the mycelium, ash, and carbohydrate content of young fruiting bodies. …

In recent years, emphasis has been placed on the use of natural materials in the control and treatment of various infections, as some chemically synthesized drugs have undesirable side effects. In this study, the ethanol extract of Iranian walnut leaves was examined for antibacterial activities on Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus salivarius, Streptococcus sanguinis, and Actinomyces viscosus using the microdilution method. Total phenols, flavonoids, and flavonols were also determined colorimetrically. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) for ethanolic extract ranged between 15.6 and 187.5 mg/mL and minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBC) ranged between 31.25 and 250 mg/mL. Total phenols were 410 ± 14.43 mg/g …
