The Vocal Behaviors Of North American River Otters (Lontra Canadensis) Individual Differences And Shared Repertoires, Carla Almonte
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The current information on the vocal repertoire of the North American River Otter is very limited. To date there have been no direct studies conducted on their repertories. In this study, I examined the vocal behavior of 12 captive river otters. The discriminant function analysis suggests that river otters have 4 distinct call types with 7 sub-call types and one call the whistle is unique to one group of pups. The results of the Kruskal-Wallis comparing acoustical structures shows strong evidence for the presence of individuality with some individuals showing greater differences in comparison to the others. I also examined …
From Isotropic To Anisotropic Side Chain Representations: Comparison Of Three Models For Residue Contact Estimation, Weitao Sun, Jing He
From Isotropic To Anisotropic Side Chain Representations: Comparison Of Three Models For Residue Contact Estimation, Weitao Sun, Jing He
Computer Science Faculty Publications
The criterion to determine residue contact is a fundamental problem in deriving knowledge-based mean-force potential energy calculations for protein structures. A frequently used criterion is to require the side chain center-to-center distance or the C-alpha-to-C-alpha atom distance to be within a pre-determined cutoff distance. However, the spatially anisotropic nature of the side chain determines that it is challenging to identify the contact pairs. This study compares three side chain contact models: the Atom Distance criteria (ADC) model, the Isotropic Sphere Side chain (ISS) model and the Anisotropic Ellipsoid Side chain (AES) model using 424 high resolution protein structures in the …

Turkish Journal of Biology
Lipases (triacylglycerol hydrolases) are hydrolytic enzymes that can catalyze the hydrolysis of the ester bond of long-chain acylglycerols at the oil-water interface. The present study investigated the effects of inducers, surface-active materials, activators, and inhibitors in the fermentation medium on lipase activity in Rhizopus delemar. In the presence of certain commercial oils and tributyrin as an inducer, lipase activity decreased in the order of sunflower oil > soybean oil > hazelnut oil > corn oil > tributyrin > olive oil. In addition, the effects of the stirring and aeration rates on lipase activity were investigated. To investigate the effect of surface-active materials on lipase activity …

Turkish Journal of Biology
Ultraviolet B (UV-B) irradiation has an adverse effect on plant cells because it causes the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). This is scavenged by some endogenous defense systems. In this study, the activities of H_2O_2-detoxifying antioxidant enzymes in 4 barley cultivars pretreated with high temperature or NaCl before UV-B irradiation were investigated. The stress response in the seedlings was determined by measuring the photosynthetic performance index (PI), which significantly decreased in all barley cultivars under almost all treatments compared to their controls. Activities of 3 H_2O_2-detoxifying antioxidant enzymes (ascorbate peroxidase, glutathione reductase, and peroxidase) significantly increased as a result …

Application Of Est-Ssrs To Examine Genetic Diversity In Eggplant And Its Close Relatives, Yeli̇z Tümbi̇len, Anne Frary, Marie-Christine Daunay, Sami̇ Doğanlar
Turkish Journal of Biology
Within the genus Solanum, the term 'eggplant' encompasses several cultivated species that are used for food and, to a lesser extent, for medicine. The use of one common name to describe more than one species and the existence of many related wild species have led to taxonomic confusion which, in turn, have complicated analyses of evolutionary relationships and genetic diversity within this groups of species. A further challenge for eggplant research is that, despite the fact that the use of molecular markers for phylogenetic studies is well-established, very few studies have described the development of new markers for eggplant. In …

Positive Correlation Between Malathion Resistance And Fecundity Within Natural Populations Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Burcu Koçak Memmi̇, Emel Atli
Turkish Journal of Biology
The correlation between malathion resistance and fecundity was investigated in the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster. Previous studies have shown that insecticide resistance is negatively correlated with reproductive components in insects. To investigate this relationship, the fecundity (egg production) was determined in 2 natural and 2 esterase 6 (Est-6) marker populations (4016 and 4211) and malathion resistance levels (LC_{50}) were determined in the 4 populations of D. melanogaster. The resistance levels and Est-6 allozyme frequencies were compared to the results of 2 natural populations from Turkey (Antakya-Centre and Antalya-Serik) estimated in previous studies. In addition, malathion resistance levels (LC_{50}) were determined …

Turkish Journal of Biology
A total of 94 marine actinobacterial isolates were found to be associated with 4 sponges: Callyspongia diffusa, Mycale mytilorum, Tedania anhelans, and Dysidea fragilis. Among the cultures 7 strains showed antagonism against fish and shellfish pathogens. Analysis of morphological, physiological, biochemical, and protein profile characteristics suggested that the actinobacterial strains belonged to the genus Streptomyces. The initial screening of the isolates by the spot inoculation method exhibited antibacterial activity against Aeromonas hydrophila. In vitro screening of the submerged culture extracts showed positive inhibition against the fish and shellfish pathogens Aeromonas hydrophila, Serratia sp., and Vibrio spp. The screening of bioactive …

Gas metal arc welding is a widely used method in a lot of industrial areas as it is cheap and produces high quality results. In the present study, peripheral blood lymphocytes of 23 welders and 25 non-exposed subjects were monitored for cytotoxicity. Information regarding the subjects' ages, smoking habits, alcohol consumption, duration of exposure, and medicine usage was recorded. According to the results, mitotic index (2.278 ± 1.325) of the welders was higher than that of those non-exposed (0.956 ± 0.616) (P < 0.01). There was no significant difference between mitotic index rates of smoking and non-smoking subjects. In contrast, there were significant differences between non-exposed subjects and welders for both smoking and non-smoking (P < 0.05). It was found that as the time of exposure to welding fumes increased so did the mitotic index rates (P < 0.05). Both a positive correlation in welders and a negative correlation in non-exposed subjects were observed between mitotic index frequency and age. In the light of the results obtained, it is advised that welders who work with gas metal arc welding be instructed and necessary protective measures be taken because of the risk caused by metal arc welding fumes.
