Programmable Logic Controller Based Fibre Bragg Grating In-Ground Intrusion Detection System, Gary Allwood, Graham Wild, Steven Hinckley Jan 2011

Programmable Logic Controller Based Fibre Bragg Grating In-Ground Intrusion Detection System, Gary Allwood, Graham Wild, Steven Hinckley

Australian Security and Intelligence Conference

In this paper we present an in-ground intrusion detection system for security applications. Here, an optical fibre pressure switch is directly connected to a standard digital input of a programmable logic controller (PLC). This is achieved using an intensiometric detection system, where a laser diode and Fibre Bragg Grating (FBG) are optically mismatched, resulting in a static dc offset from the transmitted and reflected optical power signals. Pressure applied to the FBG, as the intruder stepped on it, induced a wavelength shift in the FBG. The wavelength shift was then converted into an intensity change as the wavelength of the …

High Resolution Hybrid Mass Spectrometry For The Determination Of Marine Biotoxins, Azaspiracids, And Their Biotransformation Products., Zuzana Skrabakova Jan 2011

High Resolution Hybrid Mass Spectrometry For The Determination Of Marine Biotoxins, Azaspiracids, And Their Biotransformation Products., Zuzana Skrabakova

Theses

Azaspiracids (AZAs), polyether marine toxins, are produced by marine microalgae and accumulate in filter-feeding bivalve molluscs, such as mussels, clams, oysters and scallops, while grazing on phytoplankton, from which they derive nutrition. Although being discovered quite recently, AZAs have caused several human intoxication events and thus became a problem for health authorities and shellfish industries. The rapid development of highly sensitive liquid chromatography multiple tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS, LC-MS") methods enabled the identification of numerous AZA analogues and added to the control of shellfish contamination. Tandem mass spectrometry techniques, while being highly selective and sensitive for determination of AZAs in …

Purification, Characterisation And Applications Of A Cloned Staphylococcal Bacteriophage Lysin For The Control Of Multi-Drug Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus Including Mrsa, Mark Fenton

Theses

The work presented in this thesis focuses on the purification, characterisation and practical applications of an anti-staphylococcal lysin (LysK) and its single-domain truncated derivative (CHAPk) against pathogenic staphylococci including meticillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Both proteins were purified to greater than 90% homogeneity. Affinity chromatography was applied as the optimum method for LysK purification and ion-exchange chromatography was successfully applied to CHAPk. The lytic spectrum of LysK was investigated by zymogram analysis where the enzyme exhibited strong activity against a range of staphylococci regardless of their origin, sequence type (ST) or antibiotic resistant profile. This analysis …

Occupational Health Hazard And Ergonomic Evaluation In Thai-Massage Workers: A Pilot Study, Kate Sadyapongse, Pornchai Sithisarankul

Asian Medical Journal and Alternative Medicine

Thai-massage workers are exposed to various occupational health hazards, but ergonomic hazard is themost obvious and may cause work-related musculoskeletal disorders. A walkthrough survey was conducted to observethe work process including materials used, to identify all types of occupational health hazards in a Thai-massageprofession. Two common types of massages, Thai massage (body massage) and foot massage, performed by oneThai-massage worker were observed. It was found that the number of force exertions per case was 866 in a60-minute Thai massage session and 1,449 in a 50-minute foot massage session. The massage worker exerted forcemost frequently through his thumbs in both Thai …

Stem Cells: Medical Applications And Issues Of Concern, Pakpoom Kheolamai Jan 2011

Stem Cells: Medical Applications And Issues Of Concern, Pakpoom Kheolamai

Asian Medical Journal and Alternative Medicine

During the last decade, stem cells emerge as a potential alternative treatment for several degenerativediseases. Despite their ability to generate most specific cell types for cell replacement therapy and tissue engineering, the uses of embryonic stem cells, induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells and adult stem cells in clinical applicationsare still limited. There are several problems that need to be addressed before stem cell treatment can be consideredfor practical applications. According to that, the carefully designed basic and clinical studies have to be performedto improve our understanding on basic biology and therapeutic potentials of stem cells, as well as the safety andlong-term …

Composition-Structure-Property Relationships For Experimental Composite Nerve Guidance Conduits, Xiaofang Zhang Jan 2011

Composition-Structure-Property Relationships For Experimental Composite Nerve Guidance Conduits, Xiaofang Zhang

Theses

Many Nerve Guidance Conduits (NGCs) have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as an alternative to nerve autografting for guiding peripheral nerve regeneration. However these materials offer little therapeutic potential for favourable axon growth environment, and difficulty in balancing the mechanical properties and the degradation rate of the implanted material is also a contemporary challenge. This project involved the design of experimental composite NGCs comprising glass particles and Pluronic FI27 in the copolymer (poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid)) and examined the composition-structure-property relationships for such materials. Three glasses (0.5Si-(x) Na-0.2Ca-0.13Zn-(0.17-x) Ce) (0.0.04 > x > 0.14) were produced. Glasses were characterised using …

The Evolution Of Bacteriophages E11/2 And E4/Lc For Control Of Verocytotxigenic E.Coli At Key Stages In The Beef Chain, Bríd Coffey

Theses

The objective of this thesis was lo evaluate the potential of bactcriophages e4/1 c and cl 1/2 ns biocontrol agents for E. coli O157:H7. Initially, e4/lc and el 1/2 were subjected to high-throughput 454 sequencing. The data generated revealed that e4/I c (47,112 bp) is very similar to the lytic E. coli phages RTP and JK06. Interestingly, differences within the tail module led to the identification of a putative site of attachment to E. coli O157:H?. Comparative genomic analysis indicated that el 1/2 (168,470 bp) is a novel member of the T-even group, with high degrees of similarity to T4 …

Productivity And Trophic Interactions In The Missouri River Impoundments, Mark J. Fincel Jan 2011

Productivity And Trophic Interactions In The Missouri River Impoundments, Mark J. Fincel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Standardized monitoring is a vital component of fisheries assessment in Missouri River impoundments. In South Dakota, annual variation in fish growth and abundance is used to monitor changes in fish populations and develop strategies (i.e. regulations) for managing recreational fishes. Although variation in fish abundance provides important insight into the status of fish populations, it can be difficult to link these changes to environmental conditions (i.e. hydrology) without concurrent information about reservoir productivity. Measures of nutrient concentration, algal biomass, and zooplankton composition/abundance provide important insights into reservoir productivity, but standardized approaches for collecting these measures have not been developed for …

The ion release profiles and bioactivity of a series of Ti containing glass polyalkenoate cements. Characterization revealed each material to be amorphous with a Tg in the region of 650-660°C. The network connectivity decreased (1.83-1.35) with the addition of TiO2 which was also evident with analysis by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Ion release from cements were determined using atomic absorption spectroscopy for zinc (Zn2+), calcium (Ca2+), strontium (Sr2+), Silica (Si4+) and titanium (Ti4+). Ions such as Zn2+ (0.1-2.0 mg/l), Ca2+ (2.0-8.3 mg/l,) Sr2+ (0.1-3.9 mg/l), and Si4+ …

Effects Of Block Predator Management On Duck And Pheasant Nest Success In Eastern South Dakota, Nicholas R. Docken Jan 2011

Effects Of Block Predator Management On Duck And Pheasant Nest Success In Eastern South Dakota, Nicholas R. Docken

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nest success is the biggest limiting factor governing waterfowl production in the Prairie Pothole Region which supports greater than 50% of North America’s breeding duck population. Depredation by predators accounts for 80% or more of nest losses each year (Klett 1988). Township size block predator management (BPM) has been effective at increasing duck nest success in North Dakota and Canada, but no BPM work has been done in South Dakota. There has also been no research on the effects of BPM on pheasants. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effectiveness of increasing duck and pheasant nest success …

Use Of Bio-Ethanol And Bio-Diesel The Key Solution For A More Sustainable Road Transport, Alberto Boretti Jan 2011

Use Of Bio-Ethanol And Bio-Diesel The Key Solution For A More Sustainable Road Transport, Alberto Boretti

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) of alternative transportation fuels clearly shows the advantages of reducing the use of nonrenewable fossil fuels vs. renewable biologic novel fuels to reduce the emissions of carbon dioxide. Being based on the natural recycle of carbon dioxide through the use of renewable energy sources, use of these renewable fuels does not imply depletion of natural resources and is therefore sustainable in the long term. Renewable fuels and advanced internal combustion engines and powertrains are the technologies that in addition to be the most likely to produce benefits in term of carbon balance and fossil fuel saving, …

Pce Groundwater Quality Assessment Of The University Of Northern Iowa Campus Area, Brian Gedlinske Jan 2011

Pce Groundwater Quality Assessment Of The University Of Northern Iowa Campus Area, Brian Gedlinske

Graduate Research Papers

Perchloroethylene (PCE), is a colorless, nonflammable, and relatively insoluble chlorinated solvent once widely used for dry cleaning and metal degreasing operations. Because of its past widespread use, poor solvent management practices, and environmental persistence, PCE is a common contaminant found in groundwater supplies. Potential health concerns include liver problems and increased cancer risk.

This research paper presents the findings of an effort to better characterize the spatial, temporal, and transport attributes of a PCE groundwater plume that exists within the Devonian aquifer underlying the University of Northern Iowa campus and the surrounding area in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Findings reveal the …

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present dynamical (e, 2e) measurements for the electron impact ionization of formic acid and tetrahydrofuran molecules performed under similar kinematics. The experiments have been performed in the coplanar asymmetric geometry for a range of momentum transfers, at an incident electron energy of 250 eV and with an ejected electron energy of 10eV. The experimental results are compared with theoretical calculations carried out using the molecular 3-body distorted wave (M3DW) model.

Modelling Dual-Carriageway Traffic Behaviour As A Complex System: A Proposal For Discussion, Timothy Hogan, Ian Clancy, Cathal Flynn Jan 2011

Modelling Dual-Carriageway Traffic Behaviour As A Complex System: A Proposal For Discussion, Timothy Hogan, Ian Clancy, Cathal Flynn

Level 3

This paper outlines the initial developmental stage of a microscopic traffic system model incorporating driver behaviour. The model uses exponential and Gaussian distributions to assign each car its starting time headway and velocity characteristics respectively as expected in real-world traffic [see 1,2]. Each car may be in one of three distinct regimes (time headway windows), depending upon how close in time the car is to the car in front of it.

Growth-Invariant Meristic Characters Tools To Reveal Phylogenetic Relationships In Nummulitidae (Foraminifera), Johann Hohenegger Jan 2011

Growth-Invariant Meristic Characters Tools To Reveal Phylogenetic Relationships In Nummulitidae (Foraminifera), Johann Hohenegger

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Morphological characters that are restricted to a few growth-independent characters (such as the embryonic apparatus of nummulitids) or measurements at arbitrarily chosen growth stages (such as the second whorl in planispiral tests) do not adequately explain the phylogenetic relationships of fossil forms. Molecular-genetic investigations enlighten phylogenetic relations, but have two main disadvantages. First, they are restricted to living forms, and second, these relations are based on an extremely small part of the DNA and never on developmental and structural genes that regulate morphology. Morphometric methods based on growth-invariant characters allow modelling the test shape for each growth stage and thus …

Growth Rate Biometric Quantification By X-Ray Microtomography On Larger Benthic Foraminifera: Three-Dimensional Measurements Push Nummulitids Into The Fourth Dimension, Antonino Briguglio, Brian Metscher, Johann Hohenegger Jan 2011

Growth Rate Biometric Quantification By X-Ray Microtomography On Larger Benthic Foraminifera: Three-Dimensional Measurements Push Nummulitids Into The Fourth Dimension, Antonino Briguglio, Brian Metscher, Johann Hohenegger

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

This work demonstrates the potential of three-dimensional biometric quantification using microtomography on larger benthic foraminifera. We compare traditional linear and area measures used for calculating three-dimensional characters with actual 3D measurements made from volume images obtained using X-ray microtomography (microCT). Two specimens of recent larger benthic foraminifera, i.e., Palaeonummulites venosus and Operculina ammonoides, were imaged with a high-resolution microCT scanner. This method enables three-dimensional imaging and calculation of measurements like 3D distances, surfaces and volumes. The quantitative high-resolution images enabled the extraction of the lumina from the proloculus to the last complete scanned chamber and of the canal system spreading …

The Vanishing Mexicana/O: (Dis)Locating The Native In Ruiz De Burton’S 'Who Would Have Thought It?' And 'The Squatter And The Don', Tereza M. Szeghi Jan 2011

The Vanishing Mexicana/O: (Dis)Locating The Native In Ruiz De Burton’S 'Who Would Have Thought It?' And 'The Squatter And The Don', Tereza M. Szeghi

English Faculty Publications

This article complements the existing body of Ruiz de Burton scholarship by providing the first sustained examination of her literary representations of American Indians in both Who Would Have Thought It? (1872) and The Squatter and the Don (1885), and by exploring how these representations serve her broader aims of social and political reform. American Indians’ presence in the novels, however marginal, and Ruiz de Burton’s rendering of them as savage, powerless, and justly shut out from the social and political life of the nation, are critical to the author’s aims. Accounting for the absence and strategic appearance of American …

The Effects Of Artificial Floating Wetland Islands On Water Quality In A Eutrophic Lake, Alexandra S. Jangrell-Bratli Jan 2011

The Effects Of Artificial Floating Wetland Islands On Water Quality In A Eutrophic Lake, Alexandra S. Jangrell-Bratli

USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)

Artificial floating wetland islands are alternatives to traditional treatment wetlands in areas with limited shoreline. Artificial floating wetland island vegetation enhances water quality due to direct uptake of nutrients from the increased surface area available for microbial growth. Three artificial islands and two Pontederia tussocks were enclosed in an urban eutrophic lake in St. Petersburg, FL to determine the effects of artificial floating wetland islands on water quality for two months at the end of the growing season. Excess nutrients from anthropogenic input have decreased water quality in the lake which might affect Coffee Pot Bayou and Tampa Bay into …
