Wireless Telesurveillance System For Detecting Dementia, William D. Kearns, James L. Fozard, Vilis O. Nams, Jeffrey D. Craighead

Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling Faculty Publications

Objective We hypothesized path tortuosity (an index of casual locomotor variability) measured by a movement telesurveillance system would be suitable for assisted living facility residents clinically diagnosed with dementia. Background We examined the relationship of dementia to path tortuosity and to movement speed and path length variability, both of which increase in dementia. Methods Daytime movements of 25 elders (19 female; 14 with dementia; average age 80.6) were monitored for 30 days using radio transponders measuring location with a maximum accuracy of 20 cm. After 30 days, the Mini Mental State Exam (MMSE) and Revised Algase Wandering Scale-Community Version (RAWS-CV) …

Diagonal Federalism And Climate Change: Implications For The Obama Administration, Hari M. Osofsky Jan 2011

Diagonal Federalism And Climate Change: Implications For The Obama Administration, Hari M. Osofsky

Articles

The Obama Administration’s efforts on climate change continue to face daunting challenges domestically and internationally. This Article makes a novel contribution by exploring how the Obama Administration can meet these challenges more effectively though systematically addressing the multiscalar character of climate change in the areas where it has greater regulatory control. Mitigating and adapting to climate change pose complex choices at individual, community, local, state, national, and international levels. The Article argues that these choices lead to many diagonal regulatory interactions: that is, dynamics among a wide range of public and private actors which simultaneously cut across levels of government …

Gorwth And Developmental Plasticity Of Chaoborus Americanus Populations, Rachel Moran Jan 2011

Gorwth And Developmental Plasticity Of Chaoborus Americanus Populations, Rachel Moran

Honors Capstones

The larval stage of the phantom midge Chaoborus americanus (Chaoboridae) is an important predator on zooplankton in temperate, fish less ponds. Chaoborus have distinct development stages typical of holometabolous insects: egg, larva (four larval instars), pupa, and adult. Temperature and food levels can significantly affect development rates in insects. The purpose of this study was: (1) to compare developmental patterns of populations of C. americanus from different latitudes (northern Wisconsin, northern Illinois), which experience different annual temperature regimes; and (2) to construct a mathematical model to predict larval development patterns (Developmental Model) and another to predict abundance patterns for C. …

Nutrient Removal From Urban Stormwater Using Floating Treatment Wetland System, Md Kamrul Islam Jan 2011

Nutrient Removal From Urban Stormwater Using Floating Treatment Wetland System, Md Kamrul Islam

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Despite the technology advancement, degradation of water quality due to stormwater continues to be a significant threat to the water and ecosystems due to the exponential growth of industries and agricultural enterprises that discharge stormwater. These anthropogenic activities are the sources of high nitrogen and phosphorus quantities in stormwater, which is responsible for eutrophication phenomena and deterioration of public health. Floating Treatment Wetlands (FTWs) are a potential solution to this problem. Both microcosm and mesocosm level studies were conducted for the effective removal of nutrients in stormwater wet detention ponds with different sorption media under varying nutrient concentrations and weather …

Intelligent Design, Jillian Amistoso Dudziak Jan 2011

Intelligent Design, Jillian Amistoso Dudziak

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As human beings we are designed and created in a fabric that is profound and complex. We are built with a framework where mind and body work in a concerted effort to maintain our lives automatically. A deep and defining part of our existence as humans is not just the innate desire to live but to live in consistent well-being--emotionally, physically, and mentally. I believe when we incorporate our knowledge of human physiology into our creative process then we allow ourselves a greater opportunity to create an authentic connection with our intended audience. My work during the past three years …

Bayesian Model Selection For Classification With Possibly Large Number Of Groups, Justin Kyle Davis Jan 2011

Bayesian Model Selection For Classification With Possibly Large Number Of Groups, Justin Kyle Davis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the present dissertation is to study model selection techniques which are specifically designed for classification of high-dimensional data with a large number of classes. To the best of our knowledge, this problem has never been studied in depth previously. We assume that the number of components p is much larger than the number of samples n, and that only few of those p components are useful for subsequent classification. In what follows, we introduce two Bayesian models which use two different approaches to the problem: one which discards components which have “almost constant” values (Model 1) and …

Self-Assembly Of Amyloid Aggregates Simulated With Molecular Dynamics, Workalemahu Mikre Berhanu Jan 2011

Self-Assembly Of Amyloid Aggregates Simulated With Molecular Dynamics, Workalemahu Mikre Berhanu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Amyloids are highly ordered cross-β sheet aggregates that are associated with many diseases such as Alzheimer‟s, type II diabetes and prion diseases. Recently a progress has been made in structure elucidation, environmental effects and thermodynamic properties of amyloid aggregates. However, detailed understanding of how mutation, packing polymorphism and small organic molecules influence amyloid structure and dynamics is still lacking. Atomistic modeling of these phenomena with molecular dynamics (MD) simulations holds a great promise to bridge this gap. This Thesis describes the results of MD simulations, which provide insight into the effects of mutation, packing polymorphism and molecular inhibitors on amyloid …

Occurrence Of Blarina Brevicauda In Arkansas And Notes On The Distribution Of Blarina Carolinensis And Cryptotis Parva, R. S. Pfau, D. Blake Sasse, M. B. Connior, I. F. Guenther

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

We provide an update on the species and distribution of shrews occurring in Arkansas. Shrews were collected within Arkansas Game and Fish Commission Wildlife Management Areas and along the Buffalo National River. We also searched mammal collections at several institutional museums to provide additional locality records for Cryptotis parva. Specimens of Blarina were identified to species by DNA sequencing of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene. Previously, Blarina hylophaga was believed to occur in the northwest corner of Arkansas and B. carolinensis throughout the rest of the state. However, our genetic analysis revealed that it is B. brevicauda that occupies the …

Seasonal Activity, Population Characteristics, And Age Estimation In The Aquatic Salamander, Siren Intermedia Nettingi (Goin), J. A. Sawyer, S. E. Trauth Jan 2011

Seasonal Activity, Population Characteristics, And Age Estimation In The Aquatic Salamander, Siren Intermedia Nettingi (Goin), J. A. Sawyer, S. E. Trauth

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

We conducted a study of the Western Lesser Siren (Siren intermedia nettinigi), at a locality termed the Airport Road site in Jonesboro (Craighead County, AR) from November 2004 until March 2007. This site consisted of a network of roadside ditches in cultivated lawns in an industrial park. Even though sirens are known to occur frequently in ditches, most studies of the genus Siren have taken place in natural wetlands. We compiled mark-recapture data at the Airport Road site for each season to determine if the seasonal activity pattern for sirens in northeast Arkansas varied from activity data previously published from …

Assessment And Characterization Of Physical Habitat, Water Quality, And Biotic Assemblages Of The Tyronza River, Arkansas, N. J. Wentz, N. D. Henderson, A. D. Christian Jan 2011

Assessment And Characterization Of Physical Habitat, Water Quality, And Biotic Assemblages Of The Tyronza River, Arkansas, N. J. Wentz, N. D. Henderson, A. D. Christian

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Few studies within the last few decades have addressed water quality and biotic assemblages within Arkansas’s large channel-altered deltaic rivers. The Tyronza River is located in northeast Arkansas and its watershed has a heavy agricultural presence that drastically affects habitat quality. Meanwhile, the Tyronza River hosts one of the more recent documented range extensions of the federally endangered fat pocketbook mussel [Potamilus capax (Green, 1832)]. The purpose of this study was to assess physical habitat, water quality, and biotic assemblages of the Tyronza River using the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality’s (ADEQ) regional biometrics. Water samples were collected at 9 …

On Being Us: Who Are We, And What Is This Book About? - Chapter 1 Of "Being At Home In The World: A New Christian Apologetic", Mark Mcleod-Harrison, Phil D. Smith Jan 2011

On Being Us: Who Are We, And What Is This Book About? - Chapter 1 Of "Being At Home In The World: A New Christian Apologetic", Mark Mcleod-Harrison, Phil D. Smith

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

This chapter introduces the authors and explains why we have written a book of Christian apologetics. It is important that the authors introduce themselves, because our apologetic procedure is personal. We do not offer a cool, detached, objective argument; instead, we extend an invitation.

Bioinformatic Identification Of Small Rna (And Their Targets) In The Testis Of Clawed Frogs (Xenopus And Silurana): Implications For Male Fertility, M.J. Madison-Villar Jan 2011

Bioinformatic Identification Of Small Rna (And Their Targets) In The Testis Of Clawed Frogs (Xenopus And Silurana): Implications For Male Fertility, M.J. Madison-Villar

Biology Dissertations - Archive

Chapter one sets the stage for this project, which lies somewhere near the intersection of speciation, genome, and reproductive biology. Chapter two identifies miRNA with shared expression profiles (Silurana and Xenopus). These miRNA are pulled from a subset that has retained testis expression despite a hybridization induced WGD event early in the Xenopus lineage (~21-41 MYA). Allopolyploidization is a revolutionary mechanism of genome evolution, and this event should have afforded an opportunity for diversification and changes in the expression of what are generally highly conserved transcript regulators. It is inferred that the miRNA identified in this study retained testis expression …

Characterization Of The Expression Of Bdnf And Cgrp And Their Regulatory Pathways In Dorsal Root Ganglion During Cystitis., Sharon Yu Jan 2011

Characterization Of The Expression Of Bdnf And Cgrp And Their Regulatory Pathways In Dorsal Root Ganglion During Cystitis., Sharon Yu

Theses and Dissertations

Interstitial cystitis is a chronic debilitating disease that causes pain and increased frequency of micturition, amongst other symptoms, without any identifiable cause. This disease affects a large number of the population, yet the etiology is still unknown. The present study aimed to characterize BDNF and CGRP—two neuropeptides that have both been proven to play an important role in the transmission of pain as well as in hypersensitivity. The signaling pathways regulating the expression of the two neuropeptides were also examined. Results revealed that BDNF protein expression levels increased in both L1 and L6 DRG following 48 hours post CYP-induced cystitis. …

Systematic Study Of Gene Functions For Morphological Chain Formation In Streptococcus Sanguinis, Karra Evans Jan 2011

Systematic Study Of Gene Functions For Morphological Chain Formation In Streptococcus Sanguinis, Karra Evans

Theses and Dissertations

Streptococcus sanguinis is a gram-positive facultative anaerobe that is indigenous to the oral cavity and a primary colonizer of the oral cavity. It serves as a tether for the attachment of several oral bacteria that colonize the tooth surface, form dental plaque, and cause periodontal disease. Previous experiments with streptococcal strains have suggested that cellular chain morphology of streptococci may influence the competitiveness, susceptibility to phagocytosis, acidurance, and aggregation of the bacterium. The purpose of this study was to systematically determine gene functions that contribute to cellular chain length morphology in the SK36 strain of S. sanguinis. Gene functions for …

Sustainable Development In The Cultural Context: A Review Of Sources And Analysis Of Gaps, Joann Jacoby, Liz Cooper Jan 2011

Sustainable Development In The Cultural Context: A Review Of Sources And Analysis Of Gaps, Joann Jacoby, Liz Cooper

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

In order to be effective, sustainable development efforts must be grounded in a fundamental understanding of the local context. Two librarians with backgrounds in anthropology will address the issue of culturally-grounded sustainable development resources available online and in digital repositories. The presenters will review the literature on the importance of the cultural context in sustainable development, identify strengths of current culturally-grounded online collections, and review gaps in order to identify areas where libraries should focus further efforts to develop these types of collections.
