Racial And Ethnic Minority Supervisees’ Experiences In Clinical Supervision, Destiny Chanel Hill
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Clinical supervision practices, although essential to counselor development, often reflect limited cultural competence among supervisors contributes to unclear expectations, conflicting roles, and isolation, leading to stress, negative internalization, and compromised professional development. The purpose of this hermeneutic phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of racial and ethnic minority supervisees in clinical supervision within the mental health counseling profession. The research question was: What are the lived experiences of racial and ethnic minority supervisees who have been involved in clinical supervision? The framework guiding the study was hermeneutic phenomenology. Data from interviews with eight participants were analyzed using the …
Wei Xiqin’S Evolutionary Plan For Modern China, Nianhong Qiu
Wei Xiqin’S Evolutionary Plan For Modern China, Nianhong Qiu
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
This study examines the thinking, practices, and significance of Wei Xiqin (1882- 1952). Born in Germany and educated in various European countries, Wei was a musician and educator who played an active role in the educational reform of the Republic of China. Wei was equipped with modern European thoughts but held deep reverence for Confucianism and other traditional Chinese classics. Examining this contentious figure in the wake of “Chinese Evolutionism” trend, this study investigates the differences between Wei’s evolution theory and the dominant evolution theory during early 20th-century China. Wei’s evolutionism, which I call a type of “Cyclic Evolution,” implies …

Interactions among tumor, immune, and vascular niches play major roles in glioblastoma (GBM) malignancy and treatment responses. The composition and heterogeneity of extracellular core matrix proteins (CMPs) that mediate such interactions are not well understood. Here, we present an analysis of the clinical relevance of CMP expression in GBM at bulk, single-cell, and spatial anatomical resolution. We show that CMP enrichment is associated with worse patient survival, specific driver oncogenic alterations, mesenchymal state, pro-tumor immune infiltration, and immune checkpoint expression. Matrisome expression is enriched in vascular and leading edge/infiltrative niches that are known to harbor glioma stem cells. Finally, we …

The stimulator of interferon genes (STING) pathway plays a crucial role in immune responses and has emerged as a compelling target in cancer therapy. Despite promising preclinical studies, clinical trials of STING agonists have largely failed to deliver durable efficacy, with no agents progressing to phase III trials. This review examines the biological, pharmacological, and clinical barriers limiting STING pathway activation in cancer treatment. We discuss the inherent limitations of STING agonists as well as host-related resistance driven by tumor heterogeneity, immune suppression, and chronic STING activation. Mechanisms of acquired resistance, such as immune checkpoint upregulation and suppression of effector …

A system and method are presented for a time-bounded, non-genetic regeneration framework in which synthetic, diatom-shaped functional organelles are continuously produced, deployed, and exhausted within a confined system. The approach relies on geometry-driven kinematic assembly, droplet and gel physics, and swarm-level population homeostasis rather than cellular replication or organism growth. A critical design invariant enforces the release of exactly two functional organelles per release event, ensuring bounded output, predictable dynamics, and safety. The disclosure provides laboratory-recognizable implementation pathways suitable for materials science, soft-matter physics, and bioengineering groups and is released for public use to establish prior art.

Ca2+- and voltage-activated BK-type K+ channels are influenced profoundly by associated regulatory subunits, including β subunits (Kcnmb1-4; β1-β4). Although overlap in expression of different BK β subunits occurs in native tissues, whether they can coassemble in the same channel complex is not known. We coexpress β2 and β3a subunits together with BK α and, through a combination of macroscopic and single-channel recordings, along with quantitative pull-down of tagged subunits, test whether coassembly can occur. We evaluate two models: (1) random mixing in which β2 and β3a subunits coassemble in the same channels, and (2) segregation in which β2 and β3a …

Chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing (ChIP-seq) is a widely used technique for identifying transcription-factor binding and histone modifications across the genome. Peaks in ChIP-seq data vary in length depending on the biological context, from narrow transcription factor binding sites to broad histone modification domains. However, commonly used peak-calling tools are tailored to the specific types of data and struggle to consistently handle various peak lengths, datasets of varying quality, and missing control tracks-common issues in comparative or meta-analyses. These limitations are addressed with Omnipeak, a universal unsupervised peak-calling algorithm based on a constrained three-state hidden Markov model. Omnipeak accurately models global genomic …

Cyclic nucleotide-binding domain (CNBD) channels are critical components of numerous bioelectrical processes, including cardiac pacemaking, neuronal signaling, phototransduction in the eye, and stomatal regulation in plants. While members of this channel family share a conserved overall structure, they exhibit striking differences in voltage sensitivity. Hyperpolarization-activated cyclic nucleotide-gated channels are activated by membrane hyperpolarization, whereas ether-à-go-go channels open upon depolarization. Mutagenesis and chimeragenesis studies have revealed that some mutants display bipolar gating behavior-remaining closed at intermediate membrane potentials but capable of opening in response to both hyperpolarization and depolarization. Remarkably, in certain cases, just a few mutations are sufficient to reverse …

Prostate cancer (PCa) is a common malignancy in men worldwide, with incidence projected to rise in the coming years. Traditional screening and diagnostic methods, such as prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing and biopsy, face limitations in specificity and invasiveness. Circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) have emerged as stable, non-invasive biomarkers obtainable via liquid biopsies (blood, urine, semen) that could transform PCa management. These small regulatory RNAs reflect underlying tumor biology and are detectable at early disease stages, enabling improved early detection when used alongside or in place of PSA. Distinct miRNA expression patterns correlate with tumor aggressiveness. For example, miR-141 and miR-375 are …

The Human Person As Relatio In Joseph Ratzinger’S Logos-Dialogos Theology, Junmar Cris N. Caputolan
Loyola Papers
This article examines the concept of the human person as relatio in the theology of Joseph Ratzinger. Marking the twentieth anniversary of Ratzinger’s election as pope, the paper situates his Logos-Dialogos theology at the intersection of Christology and theological anthropology. It traces the development of personhood from Augustine of Hippo and Boethius to Richard of St. Victor, culminating in Ratzinger’s relational vision of the human person. The study highlights how faith, reason, and love converge in a dialogical understanding of personhood oriented toward communion with God and others.

Natural killer (NK) cells are integral to the innate immune system, playing a crucial role in immune surveillance and the rapid response to virally infected and tumor cells. Epigenetic gene expression regulation significantly influences NK cell function and differentiation. Using a high-throughput small-molecule drug screening approach, we identified bromodomain and extra-terminal domain (BET) inhibitors (BETi) as potent modulators of NK cell function, reducing proinflammatory cytokine secretion while increasing markers of NK cell maturation and cytotoxicity. During NK lineage specification from hematopoietic stem cells, we demonstrated that BETi reduced NK cell fate and promoted increased myeloid cell differentiation. Moreover, differentiated NK …

Women diagnosed with metastatic triple negative breast cancer (mTNBC) have limited treatment options, are more prone to develop resistance and are associated with high mortality. A cold tumor immune microenvironment (TIME) characterized by low T cells and high tumor associated macrophages (TAMs) in mTNBC is associated with the failure of standard-of-care chemotherapy and immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) treatment. We demonstrate that the combination of immunomodulatory low-dose Cyclophosphamide (CTX) coupled with anti-CSF-1R antibody targeted therapy (SNDX-ms6352) and anti-PD-1 (ICB), was highly effective against aggressive metastatic Trp53 null TNBC transplantable syngeneic models that present with high macrophage infiltration. Mechanistically, CSF-1R inhibition along …

Motivation: Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-Seq) technology enables detailed exploration of gene expression at the individual cell level, crucial for annotating cell types and understanding cellular diversity. Traditional methods for cell type annotation often rely on marker genes and manual labeling, posing challenges due to low data quality and incomplete reference datasets.
Results: We developed CeLLTra, a novel contrastive learning framework that leverages a Transformer-based model integrating biological pathway information to group genes into super tokens, effectively capturing comprehensive gene expression from scRNA-Seq data. By combining this pathway-informed Transformer with a pretrained domain-specific language model, CeLLTra accurately aligns cell-type annotations with …

Antibody and cytokine kinetics describe the dynamic response to immune events such as infection and vaccination. These dynamics are not fully understood, and mathematical characterization may help explain variability across demographic groups and pulmonary symptoms post-acute infection. We fit time-dependent probability models to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) data to obtain distributions of longitudinal antibody response and cytokine values. To assess differences between groups, an overlap metric is applied to the modeled response curves. Our antibody models suggest significant differences between male and female populations and demonstrate deficient antibody responses of less-healthy groups such as smokers. Our cytokine …

Abstract: Background: Recognising the importance of physical activity for students' overall well-being and cognitive functioning, this study aims to investigate the relationship between the achievement of students in grades 5–8 in STEM subjects and their non-formal physical activity. Materials and Methods: The data for this study were gathered from the Lithuanian school management system. To categorize the marks into STEM subjects and non-formal physical sport activities, a RoBeRTa pre-trained model, a tool based on Natural Language Processing (NLP), was utilized. For the hypothesis testing of non-normally distributed data, the Mann–Whitney U test was employed. Results: The results of study show …

Springtime ushers in a bouquet of flowering arrangements that create ripe economic and social opportunities. Since the Japanese ambassador's gift of 3020 Yoshino cherry trees to the National Mall in Washington, DC, the National Cherry Blossom Festival has occurred annually beginning in 1935. This festival is unique in that over one million visitors parade the Capitol area each year, drawing inspiration from the peak blooming date of the characteristic cherry trees. The NPS provided data on the several stages of Yoshino cherry trees leading to peak bloom from 2004–2024, while local climate data exists for temperature, rainfall, and other factors …

During the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, before vaccines were available, countries implemented diverse combinations of social-distancing (SD) measures shaped by cultural norms and public acceptance. These differences produced varied outcomes in controlling viral spread, offering lessons for future health-crisis preparedness. We performed a reverse-engineering analysis of early COVID-19 case data from five socioculturally distinct countries—India, Vietnam, Italy, Finland, and the United States—selected to capture a range of initial prevalence levels. Using mathematical modeling and data fitting, we inferred the relative contributions of three SD interventions: face masking, quarantine, and isolation of infected individuals. We then employed an efficiency …

This study employed an age-structured Susceptible-Infected-Recovered-Vaccinated-Deceased (SIRVD) model to design optimal COVID‑19 intervention strategies by integrating epidemiological dynamics with economic costs. Using empirical data from South Korea, we estimated transmission parameters and analyzed quarantine-based non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) alongside targeted vaccination scenarios. Our results indicated that a stronger form of mild NPI (upper range of Level I), when combined with targeted vaccination that prioritized seniors, achieved substantial reductions in infection peaks and overall economic burden. These findings underscore the effectiveness of age-specific strategies in epidemic management and offer critical insights for policymakers seeking balanced, resource-efficient approaches.
