Research Publications (2011 to 2015)
The determination of forage quality is one of the most important factors essential to appropriate field management. The most important factor, effective on forage quality, is the growth stage; by studying on phenological stages of the forage, suitable grazing time can be determined. Since different cultivars of forage crops have different feed qualities at each of their growth stages, for the purpose of investigation of genetic diversity of forage yields and their quantitative characters, we studied three foxtail millet cultivars, KFM1, KFM6 and KFM9, at three phenological stages including vegetative growth stage, flowering stage and seeding stage by use of …

Hyaluronic Acid With Or Without Bone Marrow Derived-Mesenchymal Stem Cells Improves Osteoarthritic Knee Changes In Rat Model: A Preliminary Report, A.M. Suhaeb, S. Naveen, A. Mansor, Tunku Kamarul
Research Publications (2011 to 2015)
Despite being a complex degenerative joint disease, studies on osteoarthritis (OA) suggest that its progression can be reduced by the use of hyaluronic acid (HA) or mesenchymal stem cells (MSC). The present study thus aims to examine the effects of MSC, HA and the combination of HA-MSC in treating OA in rat model. The histological observations using O'Driscoll score indicate that it is the use of HA and MSC independently and not their combination that delays the progression of OA. In conclusion, the preliminary study suggest that the use of either HA or MSCs effectively reduces OA progression better than …

Microfluidics allows for the miniaturization of laboratory processes onto a compact disc (CD). A microfluidic CD provides a cost-effective, portable and automated diagnostic platform without the use of bulky equipment and complex machinery. This reduction in the cost, footprint, and user input allows for the development of tools suitable for point-of-care applications. One of the criteria for point-of-care applications is the ability to have long storage life. During storage, the reagents/chemicals in typical microfluidic CDs might evaporate and mix together before actual usage, compromising on the integrity of the result. To complement the use of capillary valves, this paper presents …

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)
Philosophy is science with the facts and data naturally relating to all aspects of human life coming into existence. As it throws light onto the problem of life and human destiny, it implies and postulates education. From these two aspects come their respective angles of vision, with similar issues and problems. Such are the meaning and purpose of human life, the relationship of the individual to the community and to his environment and the problem of values. Any coherent system of ideas, which provides guidance in facing these problems or offers a thoughtful criticism of existing institutions, culture, social practices …

Salga, A.H.A. Hadi, P.D. Hussain, S.I. Abdelwahab, M.A. Abdullah, Hapipah Mohd Ali
Research Publications (2011 to 2015)
The compound dichlorido-copper(II)-4-(2-5-bromobenzylideneamino)ethyl) piperazin-1-ium phenolate (CuLBS) was synthesized, characterized and screened for acute toxicity and protective activity against ethanol-induced gastric mucosal injury in rats. Gross microscopic lesions, biochemical and immunological parameters and histochemcial staining of glycogen storage were taken into consideration. Oral administration of CuLBS (30 and 60 mg/Kg) for two weeks dose-dependently flattened gastric mucosa, significantly increased gastric mucus and total acidity, compared with control group (P < 0.01). Serum levels of liver enzymes aspartate (AST) and alanine transaminases (ALT), pro-inflammatory (IL-6 and TNF-alpha) and anti-inflammatory (IL-10) cytokines in the rats exposed to ethanol induced ulceration have been altered. Administration of CuLBS showed considerable (P < 0.05) protection against ulceration by modulating the acute alterations of cytokines AST, ALT and stomach glycogen. Interestingly, CuLBS did not interfere with the natural release of nitric oxide. CuLBS alone (60 mg/Kg) did not exhibit any ulcerogenic effect as assessed using Adami's scoring scale. An acute toxicity study showed that rats treated with CuLBS (1,000 and 2,000 mg/Kg) manifested no abnormal signs. These findings therefore, suggested that the gastroprotective activity of CuLBS might contribute in modulating the inflammatory cytokine-mediated oxidative damage to gastric mucosa.

Boesenbergia rotunda belongs to the Zingiberaceae family and is abundant in the Southeast Asia. It is widely used as food ingredient and traditional medicine. Biologically, the plant extract contains pharmaceutically important bioactive compounds that exhibit anti-HIV protease, antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor and antioxidant activities. Proteomics approaches to study the proteins and/or enzymes involved in the biosynthesis of these compounds are challenging due to the complexity of plant samples and the presence of interfering substances. Here, we describe the development a highly robust and reproducible two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2DE) protocols for resolving the proteome of B. rotunda suspension cultures.

The present study describes callus induction and the subsequent plant regeneration with alkaloids accumulation in stern and shoot tip explants of Phyla nodiflora. Both explants were cultured on different media (MS, B5, SH and WPM) for callus induction. Stem explants showed better callus biomass (dry weight) than shoot tip explants with green compact callus when cultured on MS medium containing 1.5 mg L(-1) alpha-naphthalene acetic acid. Shoots were regenerated from the callus on MS medium with 1.5 mg L(-1) alpha-naphthalene acetic acid and 1.0 mg L(-1) benzyl adenine. The rooting of all regenerated shoots was successfully performed on half-strength MS …

Introduction: The variability of clinical outcomes in oral cancer patients and the heterogeneity of the disease are the main challenges for the improvement of current treatment modalities. Efforts in our laboratory have focused on the molecular profiling of oral cancer to understand the mechanisms underlying the disease. In a previous microarray study, we found Guanine nucleotide binding protein alpha-12 (GNA12) to be up-regulated in oral cancer. Materials and methods: In this study, we validated the expression of GNA12 at the mRNA level in 47 oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and 18 non-malignant oral mucosa tissues, by quantitative polymerase chain reaction …

A pilot-scale plant consisting of an oxidation basin (OB), a neutralization basin (NB), a reaction basin (RB), and a settling basin (SB) was designed and built to conduct pilot-scale experiments. With this system, the effects of aeration and pH on ferrous oxidation and on precipitation of the oxidized products were studied systemically. The results of pilot-scale tests showed that aeration at 300 L/min was optimum for oxidation of Fe(II) in the OB, and the efficiency of oxidation of Fe(II) increased linearly with increasing retention time. However, Fe(II) was still present in the subsequent basins-NB, RB, and SB. Results from pilot-scale …
