The Nature And Nurture Of Violence: Early Intervention Services For The Families Of Maoa-Low Children As A Means To Reduce Violent Crime And The Costs Of Violent Crime Note, Jennifer Brooks-Crozier

Connecticut Law Review

In 1993, scientist Hans Brunner discovered that several male members of a large Dutch family who exhibited behaviors such as impulsive aggression, arson, and attempted rape possessed a mutant copy of the MAOA gene, the gene that codes for the production of the enzyme monoamine oxidase A ("MAOA"). Brunner and his colleagues demonstrated that carrier males produced less MA OA, or were "MAOA-low. " They hypothesized that this MAA deficiency caused abnormal aggressive behavior in MAOA-low males. Subsequent research, however, demonstrated that the genetic mutation, acting alone, does not produce the abnormal, aggressive behavior observed by Brunner and his colleagues. …

Microclimate And Bat Occupation Trends At Gorman Cave, Colorado Bend State Park, San Saba County, Texas During 2010-2011. Jan 2011

Microclimate And Bat Occupation Trends At Gorman Cave, Colorado Bend State Park, San Saba County, Texas During 2010-2011.

KIP Articles

Bats are the only group of vertebrates that have successfully exploited caves for permanent shelter. Suitable bat caves are rare on karst landscapes because cave microclimate must provide certain temperature and humidity ranges for optimal metabolic regulation by roosting bats. Caves that are suitable for maternal bat colonies allow females to conserve stored energy and neonatal bats to develop and mature. Similarly, caves that are suitable as hibernacula allow bats optimal thermoregulation and survival during the cold season. Therefore, bat use at caves should be investigated and monitored, and caves important to long-term population viability should be protected. Colorado Bend …

Genetic Modulation Of Horizontal Cell Number In The Mouse Retina, Irene Whitney, Mary Raven, Daniel Ciobanu, Ross Poché, Qian Ding, Yasser Elshatory, Lin Gan, Robert Williams, Benjamin Reese

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Neuronal populations display conspicuous variability in their size among individuals, but the genetic sources of this variation are largely undefined. We demonstrate a large and highly heritable variation in neuron number within the mouse retina, affecting a critical population of interneurons, the horizontal cells. Variation in the size of this population maps to the distal end of chromosome (Chr) 13, a region homologous to human Chr 5q11.1–11.2. This region contains two genes known to modulate retinal cell number. Using conditional knock-out mice, we demonstrate that one of these genes, the LIM homeodomain gene Islet-1 (Isl1), plays a role …
