Faith Integration Development: Faculty Conceptions Of Faith-Learning Integration, Brandon J. Jacob

Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses

The integration of faith and learning (IFL) is the foundation upon which faith-based higher education has been built. As such, it imperative that educators at faith-based colleges and universities understand and implement this integration effectively. The purpose of this study was to determine how academic and student affairs educators conceptualize and practice the integration of faith and learning. The study also sought to identify key similarities and differences that exist between academic and student affairs educators regarding the integration of faith and learning. To answer these questions, a sample of nine academic educators and four student affairs educators were interviewed …

Influence Of Long-Distance Climate Teleconnection On Seasonality Of Water Temperature In The World's Largest Lake - Lake Baikal, Siberia - Lake Baikal, Siberia, Stephen L. Katz, Stephanie E. Hampton, Lyubov R. Izmest'eva, Marianne V. Moore

Biological Sciences Faculty Scholarship

Large-scale climate change is superimposed on interacting patterns of climate variability that fluctuate on numerous temporal and spatial scales—elements of which, such as seasonal timing, may have important impacts on local and regional ecosystem forcing. Lake Baikal in Siberia is not only the world's largest and most biologically diverse lake, but it has exceptionally strong seasonal structure in ecosystem dynamics that may be dramatically affected by fluctuations in seasonal timing. We applied time-frequency analysis to a near-continuous, 58-year record of water temperature from Lake Baikal to examine how seasonality in the lake has fluctuated over the past half century and …

Casco Bay Shorebird Monitoring Project: Year Three Progress Report, Slade Moore

Publications

This document provides a summary of shorebird-use during the third field season of the Casco Bay Shorebird Monitoring Project. Relative to other coastal areas in Maine, Casco Bay shorebird habitats are particularly vulnerable to degradation, given the heightened potential for coastal development, disturbance, and other factors in a landscape where industrial and residential land-use patterns prevail. This collaborative project provides enhanced monitoring resolution at key shorebird feeding and roosting areas designated as Significant Wildlife Habitat by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (MDIFW).

Understanding And Managing Stress, James Ness, Denise Jablonski- Kaye, Isabell Obigt, David M. Lam

United States Army: Publications

Leaders, particularly those who lead in dangerous contexts, are a powerful force in managing and alleviating the effects of stress. This chapter discusses how to leverage that force, describing stress management practices above and beyond the stalwarts of individual fitness, sleep, and good health habits. Theory along with the context of real world cases are presented to make leaders aware of the nature and effects of the decisions to be made while preparing for or leading in dangerous situations and how to assess and respond to critical incidents. The main lesson is that leaders must know their people, know the …

Eating Rate During A Fixed-Portion Meal Does Not Affect Postprandial Appetite And Gut Peptides Or Energy Intake During A Subsequent Meal, J. Phillip Karl, Andrew J. Young, Scott J. Montain Jan 2011

Eating Rate During A Fixed-Portion Meal Does Not Affect Postprandial Appetite And Gut Peptides Or Energy Intake During A Subsequent Meal, J. Phillip Karl, Andrew J. Young, Scott J. Montain

United States Army: Publications

Eating rate has recently been shown to influence energy intake and appetite during an ad libitummeal, and alter postprandial secretion of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and peptide-YY (PYY) following a fixed-portionmeal. Whether these effects influence satiety, as measured by energy intake at the subsequent meal, is unclear. We manipulated eating rate during a fixed-portion meal in order to examine how eating behavior and associated periprandial and postprandial responses of putative endocrine mediators of appetite would affect energy intake at the following meal in fifteen non-obese (BMI ≥ 25 kg/m²) and ten obese (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m²) healthy adult men and …

Animals were pretreated intravenously with catalytically active rePON1, followed by exposure to 1.2 X LCt50 sarin or soman. Administration of 5 units of rePON1 showed mild increase in the blood activity of the enzyme after 30 min, but protected the animals with a significant increase in survival rate along with minimal signs of nerve agent toxicity. Recombinant PON1 pretreated animals exposed to sarin or …

On A Physical Scientific Approach To Transperson Al Psychology, Alan Haas Jan 2011

On A Physical Scientific Approach To Transperson Al Psychology, Alan Haas

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

Transpersonal psychology involves an approach to behavior and the self that transcends

ordinary states of mind as well as extends to the larger environment as a whole. Treating

the individual, their mind, and behavior in relation to others and the larger natural system

utilizing properly developed and practically applicable concepts from physics, chemistry, and

biology may provide a successful interpretation that may be more powerful than the standard

views of psychology. For instance, basic concepts such as charge pair attraction‑repulsion,

bonding, and synchronous behavior may be transformed into highly effective and even

“spiritual” concepts that can add sophistication to human …

Parsing Combinatory Categorial Grammar With Answer Set Programming: Preliminary Report, Yuliya Lierler, Peter Schüller Jan 2011

Parsing Combinatory Categorial Grammar With Answer Set Programming: Preliminary Report, Yuliya Lierler, Peter Schüller

Computer Science Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Combinatory categorial grammar (CCG) is a grammar formalism used for natural language parsing. CCG assigns structured lexical categories to words and uses a small set of combinatory rules to combine these categories to parse a sentence. In this work we propose and implement a new approach to CCG parsing that relies on a prominent knowledge representation formalism, answer set programming (ASP) — a declarative programming paradigm. We formulate the task of CCG parsing as a planning problem and use an ASP computational tool to compute solutions that correspond to valid parses. Compared to other approaches, there is no need to …

Correlations Of Physiological Activities In Nocturnal Cheyne–Stokes Respiration, Alexander Umantsev, Alexander Golbin Jan 2011

Correlations Of Physiological Activities In Nocturnal Cheyne–Stokes Respiration, Alexander Umantsev, Alexander Golbin

Chemistry and Physics Faculty Working Papers

We have conducted a power–spectrum–density (PSD) analysis of the distinct sleep stages of a previously diagnosed nocturnal Cheyne–Stokes patient (NCSR) and studied the correlations of different physiological activities. This is the first study where the correlations were analyzed separately for different sleep stages and the influence of arousals was completely eliminated. Mathematical analysis of the polysomnographical records revealed clear indicators of the disorder in the form of large peaks in a very-low frequency range of ƒ ˜ 0.02 Hz. We have shown existence of the significant entrainment of the cerebral and cardiac activities with respiration during different stages of sleep …

A New Noncovalent Force: Comparison Of P∙∙∙N Interaction With Hydrogen And Halogen Bonds, Steve Scheiner Jan 2011

A New Noncovalent Force: Comparison Of P∙∙∙N Interaction With Hydrogen And Halogen Bonds, Steve Scheiner

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

When PH(3) is paired with NH(3), the two molecules are oriented such that the P and N atoms face one another directly, without the intermediacy of a H atom. Quantum calculations indicate that this attraction is due in part to the transfer of electron density from the lone pair of the N atom to the σ(∗) antibond of a P-H covalent bond. Unlike a H-bond, the pertinent hydrogen is oriented about 180° away from, instead of toward, the N, and the N lone pair overlaps with the lobe of the P-H σ(∗) orbital that is closest to the P. In …
