Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

Although sediment is a natural constituent of rivers, excess loading to rivers and streams is a leading cause of impairment and biodiversity loss. Remedial actions require identification of the sources and mechanisms of sediment supply. This task is complicated by the scale and complexity of large watersheds as well as changes in climate and land use that alter the drivers of sediment supply. Previous studies in Lake Pepin, a natural lake on the Mississippi River, indicate that sediment supply to the lake has increased 10-fold over the past 150 years.Herein we combine geochemical fingerprinting and a suite of geomorphic change …

Nuremberg And The Crime Of Abortion, Jeffrey C. Tuomala Jan 2011

Nuremberg And The Crime Of Abortion, Jeffrey C. Tuomala

Faculty Publications and Presentations

The crime of abortion played prominently in two international trials held at Nuremberg following World War II—the Goering and Greifelt cases. Allied prosecutors made the case that voluntary and involuntary abortion were war crimes and crimes against humanity. The Goering Judgment identified policies promoting abortion as activities marking the Political Leadership Corps of the Nazi Party as a Criminal Organization. The Greifelt Indictment charged ten defendants with voluntary and involuntary abortion. A focus of the prosecution’s case was the removal of the protection of law from unborn children in occupied Poland and racially non-valuable unborn children of Eastern workers in …

Ninety‐two percent of students agreed the PAC unit of the course helped improve their problem‐solving skills.

Object-Based Epistemology At A Creationist Museum, Paul J. Wendel Jan 2011

Object-Based Epistemology At A Creationist Museum, Paul J. Wendel

Education Faculty Scholarship & Creative Works

In a regional young-earth creationist museum, objects are presented as if they speak for themselves, purportedly embodying proof that the earth is less than 10,000 years old, that humans have lived on earth throughout its history, and that dinosaurs and humans lived simultaneously. In public lectures, tours, and displays, museum associates emphasize direct observation over inference or theory. These emphases resonate closely with the "object-based epistemology" of the late nineteenth century described in Steven Conn's "Museums and American Intellectual Life, 1876-1926." In Conn's description, museum objects, artfully arranged and displayed, were intended to …

Can Reading Questions Foster Active Learning? A Study Of Six College Courses, Kathryn M. Plank, Tomas M. Koontz Jan 2011

Can Reading Questions Foster Active Learning? A Study Of Six College Courses, Kathryn M. Plank, Tomas M. Koontz

Faculty Scholarship

Many instructors strive to encourage student reading outside of class and active learning in class. One pedagogical tool, structured reading questions, can help do both. Using examples from question sets across six courses, the authors illustrate how reading questions can help students achieve the six active-learning principles described by Svinicki (1991). Qualitative and quantitative assessment data indicate that students often complete readings before class, that they view the questions as very helpful in their learning, and that they use the questions primarily to help understand what information is important and connect it to prior knowledge. Some differences in use are …

Effect Of Intraligand Π-Delocalization On The Photophysical Properties Of Two New Ru(Ii) Complexes, Dean H. Johnston Jan 2011

Effect Of Intraligand Π-Delocalization On The Photophysical Properties Of Two New Ru(Ii) Complexes, Dean H. Johnston

Chemistry Faculty Scholarship

Two new Ru(II) complexes, [Ru(bpy)2(1-COO-iqu)]+ (2; bpy = 2,2_-bipyridine, 1-COO-iqu− = isoquinoline- 1-carboxylate) and [Ru(bpy)2(3-COO-iqu)]+ (3; 3-COO-iqu− = isoquinoline-3-carboxylate), were prepared and their crystal structures solved. The ground and excited state properties of 2 and 3 were characterized and compared to those of [Ru(bpy)3]2+ (1). The presence of the oxygen atom in the Ru(II) coordination sphere makes 2 and 3 easier to oxidize than 1. The Ru→bpy MLCT absorption and emission of 2 and 3 are red-shifted relative to that of 1 in CH2Cl2, and the E00 energies were estimated to be 1.89 eV and 1.95 eV from the low …

Modeling Habitat Associations For The Common Loon (Gavia Immer) At Multiple Scales In Northeastern North America, Anne Kuhn, Jane Copeland, John Cooley, Harry Vogel, Kate Taylor, Diane Nacci, Peter V. August

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Common Loon (Gavia immer) is considered an emblematic and ecologically important example of aquatic-dependent wildlife in North America. The northern breeding range of Common Loon has contracted over the last century as a result of habitat degradation from human disturbance and lakeshore development. We focused on the state of New Hampshire, USA, where a long-term monitoring program conducted by the Loon Preservation Committee has been collecting biological data on Common Loon since 1976. The Common Loon population in New Hampshire is distributed throughout the state across a wide range of lake-specific habitats, water quality conditions, and levels of …

Nonnative Phragmites Australis Invasion Into Utah Wetlands, Andrew Kulmatiski, Karen H. Beard, Laura A. Meyerson, Jacob R. Gibson, Karen E. Mock

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud. (common reed), already one of the world's most widespread plant species, has realized rapid range expansion in coastal wetlands of North America in the past century, but little is known about P. australis range expansion in inland wetland systems. We used genetic analyses, aerial photographs, field surveys, and a greenhouse experiment to study the extent and mechanism of nonnative P. australis invasion of Utah wetlands. We collected and genetically analyzed 39 herbarium samples across the state and 225 present-day samples from northern Utah's major wetland complexes. All samples collected before 1993 and all samples …

A Mass Balance Approach To Identify And Compare Differential Routing Of 13C-Labeled Carbohydrates, Lipids, And Proteins In Vivo, Marshall D. Mccue, Adam Smith, Richard Mckinney, Boris Rewald, Berry Pinshow, Scott R. Mcwilliams Jan 2011

A Mass Balance Approach To Identify And Compare Differential Routing Of 13C-Labeled Carbohydrates, Lipids, And Proteins In Vivo, Marshall D. Mccue, Adam Smith, Richard Mckinney, Boris Rewald, Berry Pinshow, Scott R. Mcwilliams

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

All animals route assimilated nutrients to their tissues where they are used to support growth or are oxidized for energy. These nutrients are probably not allocated homogeneously among the various tissue and are more likely to be preferentially routed toward some tissues and away from others. Here we introduce an approach that allows researchers to identify and compare nutrient routing among different organs and tissues. We tested this approach by examining nutrient routing in birds. House sparrows Passer domesticus were fed a meal supplemented with one of seven 13C-labeled metabolic tracers representing three major classes of macronutrients, namely, carbohydrates, …

Archival Study: How The Architecture Of A Room Can Influence A Person’S Mood, Jordan Mckay Jan 2011

Archival Study: How The Architecture Of A Room Can Influence A Person’S Mood, Jordan Mckay

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

I conducted this meta-analysis of published studies examining how architectural designs can affect a person’s mood, as it pertains to colors of and the overall arrangement of the room. There are many factors that influence one’s mood; however, there is evidence showing that color can affect the way a person feels. Not only can color be a factor but the design of the room, whether it is a small confined space or a wide-open space, can have significant implications on a person’s mood and creativity. Many interior designers and architects consider these factors when designing a room and or space. …

It is the second phase of an earlier study, SENIOR Project I, that originally recruited 1277 community-dwelling older adults to participate in behavior-specific interventions designed to increase exercise and/or fruit and vegetable consumption. The general theoretical framework for this research is the Transtheoretical Model (TTM) of Health Behavior Change.

The current intervention occurs over a 48-month period, using a manual, newsletters, and phone coaching calls. Annual assessments collect standardized data …

Domain And Propositions Of Succession Theory, Steward Pickett, Scott Meiners, Mary Cadenasso Jan 2011

Domain And Propositions Of Succession Theory, Steward Pickett, Scott Meiners, Mary Cadenasso

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Succession is perhaps the oldest of ecological concepts, having arisen when ecology was emerging as a self-conscious discipline (Mcintosh 1985). Yet it continues to address many fundamental issues in ecology, to support important applications, and to synthesize the insights and perspectives of other theories. Thus, it fulfills two functions key in assessing the utility of a contemporary ecological theory. First, it exhibits the attributes of a mature, welldeveloped, and intensively tested theory (Glenn-Lewin et al. 1992; Pickett and Cadenasso 2005). Second, it provides a linkage among theories and applications that have usually been considered separately (Walker et al. 2007). For …

Maternal Effects On Ethanol Teratogenesis In A Cross Between A/J And C57bl/6j Mice, David Gilliam, Nate Valdez, Scott Branson, Ashley Dixon, Chris Downing Jan 2011

Maternal Effects On Ethanol Teratogenesis In A Cross Between A/J And C57bl/6j Mice, David Gilliam, Nate Valdez, Scott Branson, Ashley Dixon, Chris Downing

SPS Faculty Publications

Genetic factors influence adverse pregnancy outcome in both humans and animal models. Animal research reveals both the maternal and fetal genetic profiles are important for determining the risk of physical birth defects and prenatal mortality. Using a reciprocal-cross breeding design, we investigated whether the mother’s genes may be more important than fetal genes in determining risk for ethanol teratogenesis. Examination of possible synergistic genetic effects on ethanol teratogenesis was made possible by using two mouse strains known to be susceptible to specific malformations. Inbred A/J (A) and C57BL/6J (B6) mice were mated to produce four fetal genotype groups: the true-bred …

A Prediction Market For Climate Outcomes, Shi-Ling Hsu Jan 2011

A Prediction Market For Climate Outcomes, Shi-Ling Hsu

Scholarly Publications

This Article proposes a way of introducing some organization and tractability in climate science, generating more widely credible evaluations of climate science, and imposing some discipline on the processing and interpretation of climate information. I propose a two-part policy instrument consisting of (1) a carbon tax that is indexed to a “basket” of climate outcomes, and (2) a cap-and-trade system of emissions permits that can be redeemed in the future in lieu of paying the carbon tax. The amount of the carbon tax in this proposal (per ton of CO2) would be set each year on the basis of some …

Development And Evaluation Of A Multimedia Intensive Web-Based Exercise Motivation Tool, Rico Jamaine Kornegay Jan 2011

Development And Evaluation Of A Multimedia Intensive Web-Based Exercise Motivation Tool, Rico Jamaine Kornegay

Theses

A Multimedia-Intensive Web-Based Exercise Motivation Tool named WEMURCT (Web-Based Multi-User Randomized Circuit Training) was developed to utilize modern technology and web-based mediums to address the lack of motivation that an individual has when it comes to exercising regularly. This project was implemented using state-of-art rich internet application (RIA) technology. Popular RIA technologies that are optimized for creating multimedia-intensive applications are Flash by Adobe and Silverlight by Microsoft. In using Silverlight 4.0, we took advantage of multimedia data being embedded in a web-based application, which will be running in a web browser, to provide audio and visual instructions for the user …

A Study Of Magnesium Oxide Biodegradable Coatings For Magnesium-Based Implants., Ashlyn N. Worthy Jan 2011

A Study Of Magnesium Oxide Biodegradable Coatings For Magnesium-Based Implants., Ashlyn N. Worthy

Theses

Magnesium (Mg) and its alloys are great candidates for uses in orthopedic implant applications due to their biocompatibility, mechanical properties and degradability. However, Mg and its alloys are susceptible to accelerated degradation rates due to galvanic corrosion, which leads to unpredictable corrosion behavior. The objective of this study is to develop biocompatible, functional thin film magnesium oxide (MgO) coatings that: (1) serve as a galvanic separator between metallic substrates and metallic coatings, (2) control the rate of corrosion of Mg-based implants, (3) have controlled resorption times based on coating thickness, (4) promote osseointegration and (5) are predictable in corrosive environments. …

Application Of Kalman Filter With Time Correlated Measurement Errors In Subsurface Contaminant Transport Modeling, Godfrey Mills Jan 2011

Application Of Kalman Filter With Time Correlated Measurement Errors In Subsurface Contaminant Transport Modeling, Godfrey Mills

Theses

Contaminant transport modeling of a conservative solute in the subsurface is investigated by applying a Kalman filter (KF) with time correlated measurement errors. The usual method or assumption often employed is white Gaussian errors, but time correlated measurement errors were used instead for this research, since some hydrological observation data exhibit time correlated error characteristics. An observation data was generated from a two dimensional analytical solution with an additive time correlated random errors. This was used as the measurement Equation for the KF with time correlated measurement errors and the KF with white Gaussian errors. The measurement differencing algorithm was …

Identification Of A Second Putative Receptor For Infectious Pancreatic Necrosis Virus, Khrystal C. Mcgrant Jan 2011

Identification Of A Second Putative Receptor For Infectious Pancreatic Necrosis Virus, Khrystal C. Mcgrant

Theses

Infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV) is a bi-segmented, double stranded RNA virus that causes high mortality in young salmonid fish worldwide. As an obligate intracellular parasite, the first stage of the IPNV infectious cycle is the binding of the virus to a receptor in the host cell membrane. Recently, research has focused on identifying the IPNV receptor, and several scientists have reported binding of IPNV to a protein of approximately 220-250 kDa. The focus of this research was to investigate and reaffirm the identity of the IPNV receptor(s) for IPNV serotypes VR-299 and Sp in Chinook Salmon Embryo (CHSE-214) cells …
