Over a 70-year period, a mine near Libby, MT supplied nearly 80% of the world’s vermiculite. Raw vermiculite, which was contaminated with naturally occurring amphibole in veins throughout the deposit, was shipped to processing sites throughout the United States for exfoliation. In this pilot study, tree bark samples were collected near processing facili-ties in Spokane, WA, Santa Ana, CA, Newark, CA, and Phoenix, AZ in an effort to determine if areas surrounding these facilities are today contaminated with Libby amphibole asbestos (AA). From areas surrounding each of the four his-torical processing sites, Libby AA was detected in a subset of …
Paper Fish And Policy Conflict: Catch Shares And Ecosystem-Based Management In Maine’S Groundfishery, Jennifer F. Brewer
Paper Fish And Policy Conflict: Catch Shares And Ecosystem-Based Management In Maine’S Groundfishery, Jennifer F. Brewer
Geography
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration professes support for ecosystembased fisheries management, as mandated by Congress in the Fishery Conservation and Management Act, and as endorsed by the Obama Administration’s national ocean policy. Nonetheless, driving agency policies, including catch shares and fishing quotas, focus principally on individual species, diverting attention from ecosystem considerations such as habitat, migratory patterns, trophic relationships, fishing gear, and firmlevel decision making. Environmental non-governmental organization (ENGO) agendas manifest similar inconsistencies. A case study of Maine’s groundfishery demonstrates implications of this policy conflict at the local level. There, multigenerational fishing villages have historically pursued diversified and adaptive …

Education
Despite increases over the last two decades in the number of degrees awarded to students from underrepresented groups in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines, enhancing diversity in these disciplines remains a challenge. This article describes a strategic approach to this challenge—the development of a collaborative partnership between two universities: the historically Black Elizabeth City State University and the historically White University of New Hampshire. The partnership, a type of learning organization built on three mutually agreed upon principles, strives to enhance opportunities for underrepresented students to pursue careers in the STEM disciplines. This article further describes six promising …

The Influence Of Interleukin-4 On Ligament Healing, Connie S. Chamberlain, Ellen M. Leiferman, Kayt E. Frisch, Sijian Wang, Xipei Yang, Stacey L. Brickson, Ray Vanderby
Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering
Despite a complex cascade of cellular events to reconstruct the damaged extracellular matrix, ligament healing results in a mechanically inferior scarred ligament. During normal healing, granulation tissue expands into any residual normal ligamentous tissue (creeping substitution), resulting in a larger region of healing, greater mechanical compromise and an inefficient repair process. To control creeping substitution and possibly enhance the repair process, the antiinflammatory cytokine, interleukin-4 (IL-4), was administered to rats before and after rupture of their medial collateral ligaments. In vitro experiments showed a time-dependent effect on fibroblast proliferation after IL-4 treatment. In vivo treatments with IL-4 (100 ng/mL IV) …

Patterns And Regulation Of Ribosomal Rna Transcription In Borrelia Burgdorferi, Julia Bugrysheva, Henry P. Godfrey, Ira Schwartz, Felipe C. Cabello
NYMC Faculty Publications
BACKGROUND: Borrelia burgdorferi contains one 16S and two tandem sets of 23S-5S ribosomal (r) RNA genes whose patterns of transcription and regulation are unknown but are likely to be critical for survival and persistence in its hosts. RESULTS: RT-PCR of B. burgdorferi N40 and B31 revealed three rRNA region transcripts: 16S rRNA-alanine transfer RNA (tRNA Ala); tRNA Ile; and both sets of 23S-5S rRNA. At 34 degrees C, there were no differences in growth rate or in accumulation of total protein, DNA and RNA in B31 cultured in Barbour-Stoenner-Kelly (BSK)-H whether rabbit serum was present or not. At 23 degrees …

Ultrasound Echo Is Related To Stress And Strain In Tendon, Sarah Duenwald, Hirohito Kobayashi, Kayt E. Frisch, Roderic Lakes, Ray Vanderby Jr.
Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering
The mechanical behavior of tendons has been well studied in vitro. A noninvasive method to acquire mechanical data would be highly beneficial. Elastography has been a promising method of gathering in vivo tissue mechanical behavior, but it has inherent limitations. This study presents acoustoelasticity as an alternative ultrasound-based method of measuring tendon stress and strain by reporting a relationship between ultrasonic echo intensity (B-mode ultrasound image brightness) and mechanical behavior of tendon in vitro. Porcine digital flexor tendons were cyclically loaded in a mechanical testing system while an ultrasonic echo response was recorded. We report that echo intensity …
Network Structure, Interracial Contacts, And The Evolution Of Social Norms, David J. Hendry
Network Structure, Interracial Contacts, And The Evolution Of Social Norms, David J. Hendry
2011
In this paper I explore the underlying mechanisms of the changes in public discourse with respect to the issue of racial equality that have been observed in the United States over the course of its history, with a particular focus on the changes that occurred in the latter half of the twentieth century. Specifically, I provide a formal model of social interactions in which agents are assigned to non-homophilic networks, are heterogeneous with respect to preferences for equality between the races, and have preferences both to express their true preferences and to not appear deviant from the group. In a …

“The Rise Of The Hans”: A Critique, Thomas S. Mullaney
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
“Rise of the Hans,” by Joel Kotkin, is a troubling article to find published in a high-profile venue such as Foreign Policy. It reinforces misleading ideas about China and is problematic for a variety of specific reasons, the biggest of which has to do with Kotkin’s use of key terms.

Association Between Serum Uric Acid Levels And Diabetes Mellitus, Pavani Bandaru, Anoop Shankar
Association Between Serum Uric Acid Levels And Diabetes Mellitus, Pavani Bandaru, Anoop Shankar
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Serum uric acid has been shown to be associated with cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and chronic kidney disease in previous studies. However, few studies have examined the association between serum uric acid and diabetes mellitus and their findings are not consistent. Therefore, we examined the association between serum uric acid levels and diabetes mellitus in participants from the third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (, 52.5% women). Serum uric acid levels were categorized into quartiles. Diabetes mellitus was defined as fasting glucose ≥126 mg/dL, nonfasting glucose ≥200 mg/dL, or use of oral hypoglycemic medication or insulin (). In multivariable logistic …
Spatio-Temporal Boundary Dynamics In An East Central Indiana Tallgrass Prairie Reconstruction, Daryn J. Dockter
Spatio-Temporal Boundary Dynamics In An East Central Indiana Tallgrass Prairie Reconstruction, Daryn J. Dockter
Master of Environmental Science (MES) Theses
The spatial and temporal dynamics of ecological boundaries reveal insight into interspecific competition, species responses to anthropogenic and natural factors, and ecological function. During a fifteen year study, spatial analysis of species composition was conducted across a plant community boundary in a tallgrass prairie reconstruction in East Central Indiana (USA). Boundary formation appeared to have been influenced by short-term flooding that inundated lower portions of the study site shortly after initial seeding in spring 1993. During the first growing season, a plant boundary was perceived to be located along the flood line. In general, the flood zone was dominated by …

The Experience Of Female Administrators At A Private, Kenyan University, Elizabeth Lyon
The Experience Of Female Administrators At A Private, Kenyan University, Elizabeth Lyon
Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses
The ability of women to achieve leadership positions is often constricted in comparison to males, especially within higher education. Although these limitations exist as a global phenomenon, they are a reality specifically within African higher education (Arnfred & Afrikainstituet, 2004). Some women break through barriers such as cultural traditions and enter into leadership, but numbers remain uneven between male and female managers (Burn, 2005). Much can be learned from the experiences of the women who achieve managerial positions within higher education. Currently, literature exists on women serving in the public academic world, but little to no research exists on female …
Latino Students' Experiences In A Latin American Study Abroad Semester Program, Melissa S. Lima
Latino Students' Experiences In A Latin American Study Abroad Semester Program, Melissa S. Lima
Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses
As the Latino population increases in the United States, developing a better understanding of Latino students’ experiences within higher education benefits both the student population and those interacting with these students. Due to the limited research literature focused on the experiences of Latino students going abroad, the researcher aspired to contribute to the literature about Latino students. By using a phenomenological qualitative framework, the study intended to offer a deeper understanding of the study abroad experiences of Latino students. The study revealed that a community of learning, relationships, and the need to continue diversifying student groups impacted the identity develop …
The Value Of Relationships For Theological Development And Engagement: A Phenomenological Study Of How College Students Experience Theology, Kathleen J. Breitigan
The Value Of Relationships For Theological Development And Engagement: A Phenomenological Study Of How College Students Experience Theology, Kathleen J. Breitigan
Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses
The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to discover the essence of college students’ engagement with theology. Theology is the foundation on which Christian beliefs are based, and many Coalition of Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU) institutions affiliate themselves with core theological doctrines that influence how their institutions function. This study seeks to explore the theological experiences of eight college seniors attending three CCCU institutions. The guiding questions for this study were how do college students define theology and how do college students perceive the influence of theology on their day-to-day experience? Through photo elicitation and semi-structured interviews, four …
