Distributed Synchronization Algorithms For Wireless Sensor Networks, Nicola Varanese Jan 2011

Distributed Synchronization Algorithms For Wireless Sensor Networks, Nicola Varanese

Dissertations

The ability to distribute time and frequency among a large population of interacting agents is of interest for diverse disciplines, inasmuch as it enables to carry out complex cooperative tasks. In a wireless sensor network (WSN), time/frequency synchronization allows the implementation of distributed signal processing and coding techniques, and the realization of coordinated access to the shared wireless medium. Large multi-hop WSN's constitute a new regime for network synchronization, as they call for the development of scalable, fully distributed synchronization algorithms. While most of previous research focused on synchronization at the application layer, this thesis considers synchronization at the lowest …

Modeling Of Magnetic Field Driven Simultaneous Assembly, Rene David Rivero Jan 2011

Modeling Of Magnetic Field Driven Simultaneous Assembly, Rene David Rivero

Dissertations

The Magnetic Field Driven Simultaneous Assembly (MFDSA) is a method that offers a non-statistical and deterministic solution to the problem of assembly via batch processing; a hybrid of serial and parallel processing. The technique requires the use of electromagnets as well as soft and hard magnetic materials that are applied to devices and recesses respectively. The MFDSA approach offers the ability to check and correct errors in real-time and is capable of scalable, versatile, and high-yield integration.

Devices, coated with a layer of soft magnetic material, are moved from initial to final positions along predetermined pathways through the action of …

Model Reference Control For Ultra-High Precision Positioning Systems, Lan Yu Jan 2011

Model Reference Control For Ultra-High Precision Positioning Systems, Lan Yu

Dissertations

Due to the increasing demands of high-density semiconductors, molecular biology, optoelectronics, and MEMS/NEMS in the past decades, control of ultra-high precision positioning using piezoelectricity has become an important area because of its high displacement resolution, wide bandwidth, low power consumption, and potential low cost. However, the relatively small displacement range limits its application. This work proposed a practical ultra-high precision piezoelectric positioning system with a complementary high displacement range actuation technology. Solenoids are low cost, high speed electromagnetic actuators which are commonly used in on-off mode only because of the inherent high nonlinear force-stroke characteristics and unipolar forces (push/pull) generated …

Pattern Formation In Oscillatory Systems, Hui Wu Jan 2011

Pattern Formation In Oscillatory Systems, Hui Wu

Dissertations

Synchronization is a kind of ordinary phenomenon in nature, the study of it includes many mathematical branches. Phase space is one of the most powerful inventions of modern mathematical science. There are two variables, the position and velocity, that can describe the 2-dimensional phase space system. For example, the state of pendulum may be specified by its position and its velocity, so its phase space is 2-dimensional. The state of the system at a given time has a unique corresponding point in the phase space. In order to describe the motion of an oscillator, we can talk about its motion …

Dielectrophoresis Aligned Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes As Ph Sensors, P. Li, C. M. Martin, K. K. Yeung, Wei Xue Jan 2011

Dielectrophoresis Aligned Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes As Ph Sensors, P. Li, C. M. Martin, K. K. Yeung, Wei Xue

Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research

Here we report the fabrication and characterization of pH sensors using aligned single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). The SWNTs are dispersed in deionized (DI) water after chemical functionalization and filtration. They are deposited and organized on silicon substrates with the dielectrophoresis process. Electrodes with “teeth”-like patterns—fabricated with photolithography and wet etching—are used to generate concentrated electric fields and strong dielectrophoretic forces for the SWNTs to deposit and align in desired locations. The device fabrication is inexpensive, solution-based, and conducted at room temperature. The devices are used as pH sensors with the electrodes as the testing pads and the dielectrophoretically captured SWNTs …

Development Of A Centrifugal Microfluidic Device For Separation And Sorting In Biological Fluids, Gaurav Sunil Bagwe Jan 2011

Development Of A Centrifugal Microfluidic Device For Separation And Sorting In Biological Fluids, Gaurav Sunil Bagwe

Theses

A wide interest in employing micron-scale, integrated biochemical analysis systems for economical and rapid diagnosis has been the principal motivation behind this project. Low operating costs, portability and fast diagnosis times make centrifugal microfluidic devices an attractive option in patient-side diagnostics. Some essential tasks to be performed in microfluidic devices are sample-reagent transport, mixing, separation and detection. All these tasks require precise control of the RPM and spinning time. Centrifugal micro-fluidic platforms have been successfully implemented for detection of hepatitis A, tetanus, as well as for measurement of haemoglobin and hematocrit, for DNA analysis, and for assessment of cardiac disease …

Aminormotiffinder - A Graph Grammar Based Tool To Effectively Search A Minor Motifs In 3d Rna Molecules, Ankur Malhotra Jan 2011

Aminormotiffinder - A Graph Grammar Based Tool To Effectively Search A Minor Motifs In 3d Rna Molecules, Ankur Malhotra

Theses

RNA Motifs are three dimensional folds that play important role in RNA folding and its interaction with other molecules. They basically have modular structure and are composed of conserved building blocks dependent upon the sequence. Their automated in silico identification remains a challenging task. Existing motif identification tools does not correctly identify motifs with large structure variations. Here a “graph rewriting” based method is proposed to identify motifs in real three dimensional structures. The unique encoding of A Minor Searcher takes into consideration the non canonical base pairs and also multipairing of RNA structural motifs. The accuracy is demonstrated by …

Effects Of Hypertension And Aging On Vascular Smooth Muscle Cell Contribution To Reconstituted Aortic Tissue Stiffness, Nancy Lisa Sehgel Jan 2011

Effects Of Hypertension And Aging On Vascular Smooth Muscle Cell Contribution To Reconstituted Aortic Tissue Stiffness, Nancy Lisa Sehgel

Theses

Aortic stiffness increases with hypertension and aging, and much of this increase has been thought to occur due to changes in the extracellular matrix. However, an increase in cell stiffness could also be important. To study the cellular contribution to aortic stiffness, a reconstituted aortic tissue model (composed of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) in a collagen matrix) was developed. VSMCs isolated from thoracic aortic samples of 5-week and 18-week old male spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and normotensive Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats were passaged four times and then separately incubated in collagen for two days on a cylindrical mandrel. The resulting …

This s the first record of the genus Chaerilus in the Andaman Islands.

Study Of Controlled Release Of Dapsone From Modified Montmorillonite And Polymer Matrices, Jia Fan Jan 2011

Study Of Controlled Release Of Dapsone From Modified Montmorillonite And Polymer Matrices, Jia Fan

Theses

This thesis focuses on the controlled release system of Dapsone (DAP) as the Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) intercalated into sodium montmorillonite (MMT-Na+) and their combination with an anionic copolymer (Eudragit® S100). The effects of the excipients on the API dissolution rate were studied from their release profile in simulated intestinal fluid (pH=7.4) at 37±0.5°C. In the first part of the research, ionizable Dapsone was intercalated in the interlayers of MMT-Na+ to produce a nanohybrid. In the second part of the research, the nanohybrid was melt dispersed in the polymer to produce ternary (API/ Clay/ Polymer) composites. For comparison, API-polymer solid …

Unstable Territories Of Representation: Architectural Experience And The Behaviour Of Forms, Spaces And The Collective Dynamic Environment, Sana Murrani Jan 2011

Unstable Territories Of Representation: Architectural Experience And The Behaviour Of Forms, Spaces And The Collective Dynamic Environment, Sana Murrani

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis applies an interdisciplinary cybernetic and phenomenological analysis to contemporary theories of representation and interpretation of architecture, resulting in a speculative theoretical model of architectural experience as a behavioural system. The methodological model adopted for this research defines the main structure of the thesis where the narrative and the contributing parts of its complexity emerge. The narrative is presented through objectives and hypotheses that shift and slide between architectural representation and its experience based on three key internal components in architecture: the architectural forms and spaces, the active observers that interact with their environment, and finally, the responsive environment. …

Correction: Epistatic Interactions In Genetic Regulation Of T-Pa And Pai-1 Levels In A Ghanaian Population, Nadia M. Penrod, Kwabena A. Poku, Douglas E. Vaughn, Folkert W. Asselbergs, Nancy J. Brown, Jason H. Moore, Scott M. Williams

Dartmouth Scholarship

The proteins, tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) and plasminogen activator inhibitor 1 (PAI-1), act in concert to balance thrombus formation and degradation, thereby modulating the development of arterial thrombosis and excessive bleeding. PAI-1 is upregulated by the renin-angiotensin system (RAS), specifically by angiotensin II, the product of angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) cleavage of angiotensin I, which is produced by the cleavage of angiotensinogen (AGT) by renin (REN). ACE indirectly stimulates the release of t-PA which, in turn, activates the corresponding fibrinolytic system. Single polymorphisms in these pathways have been shown to significantly impact plasma levels of t-PA and PAI-1 differently in …

Comparison Of Modification Sites Formed On Human Serum Albumin At Various Stages Of Glycation, Omar S. Barnaby, Ronald Cerny, William Clarke, David S. Hage

David Hage Publications

Background—Many of the complications encountered during diabetes can be linked to the nonenzymatic glycation of proteins, including human serum albumin (HSA). However, there is little information regarding how the glycation pattern of HSA changes as the total extent of glycation is varied. The goal of this study was to identify and conduct a semi-quantitative comparison of the glycation products on HSA that are produced in the presence of various levels of glycation.

Methods—Three glycated HSA samples were prepared in vitro by incubating physiological concentrations of HSA with 15 mmol/l glucose for 2 or 5 weeks, or with 30 …

The (1,2)-Step Competition Graph Of A Tournament, Kim A. S. Factor, Sarah Merz Jan 2011

The (1,2)-Step Competition Graph Of A Tournament, Kim A. S. Factor, Sarah Merz

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

The competition graph of a digraph, introduced by Cohen in 1968, has been extensively studied. More recently, in 2000, Cho, Kim, and Nam defined the m-step competition graph. In this paper, we offer another generalization of the competition graph. We define the (1,2)-step competition graph of a digraph D, denoted C1,2(D), as the graph on V(D) where {x,y}∈E(C1,2(D)) if and only if there exists a vertex z≠x,y, such that either dD−y( …
