Examining Spatial Concordance Of Genetic And Species Diversity Patterns To Evaluate The Role Of Dispersal Limitation In Structuring Headwater Metacommunities, Debra S. Finn, N. Leroy Poff Mar 2011

Examining Spatial Concordance Of Genetic And Species Diversity Patterns To Evaluate The Role Of Dispersal Limitation In Structuring Headwater Metacommunities, Debra S. Finn, N. Leroy Poff

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

Given the unique spatial structure of stream habitat and the stochasticity characteristic of lotic ecosystems, metacommunity approaches hold much promise in the field of stream ecology. We take advantage of the tight parallels between neutral theories of molecular evolution and community assembly and present a novel conceptual approach to evaluating the role of stochasticity and dispersal limitation in structuring stream metacommunities. The analogous neutral frameworks generate similar expectations for the spatial structure of species comprising communities and genes comprising populations, particularly among patchily distributed, isolated local habitats (e.g., headwater streams) where among-stream dispersal is expected to be limited. Our emphasis …

Department of Health and Human Performance Faculty Articles

Position Statement: Admittedly, research to date examining the physiological effects of meal frequency in humans is somewhat limited. More specifically, data that has specifically examined the impact of meal frequency on body composition, training adaptations, and performance in physically active individuals and athletes is scant. Until more research is available in the physically active and athletic populations, definitive conclusions cannot be made. However, within the confines of the current scientific literature, we assert that:1. Increasing meal frequency does not appear to favorably change body composition in sedentary populations.2. If protein levels are adequate, increasing meal frequency during periods of hypoenergetic …

When It Comes To Succession In Singapore Family Businesses, Blood Not Always Thicker Than Water, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

For family businesses, succession is often a tricky issue that, if not properly managed, will rear its ugly head both at work and at home. Yet, for a business to prosper, concepts of meritocracy need to be in place, perhaps over and above biological ties. At a recent panel organised by the UOB-SMU Entrepreneurship Alliance Centre, the heads of four Singapore family businesses describe the different paths they took to the top and how they plan to pass the baton.

Quantifying The Energetic Contributions Of Desolvation And Π-Electron Density During Translesion Dna Synthesis, Edward A. Motea, Irene Lee, Anthony J. Berdis

Chemistry Faculty Publications

This report examines the molecular mechanism by which high-fidelity DNA polymerases select nucleotides during the replication of an abasic site, a non-instructional DNA lesion. This was accomplished by synthesizing several unique 5-substituted indolyl 2′-deoxyribose triphosphates and defining their kinetic parameters for incorporation opposite an abasic site to interrogate the contributions of π-electron density and solvation energies. In general, the Kd, app values for hydrophobic non-natural nucleotides are ∼10-fold lower than those measured for isosteric hydrophilic analogs. In addition, kpol values for nucleotides that contain less π-electron densities are slower than isosteric analogs possessing higher degrees of π-electron density. The differences …

Adoption By Same-Sex Couples And The Use Of The Representation Reinforcement Theory To Protect The Rights Of The Children, Nadia Stewart Mar 2011

Adoption By Same-Sex Couples And The Use Of The Representation Reinforcement Theory To Protect The Rights Of The Children, Nadia Stewart

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

This Note discusses the growing trend of adoptions by same-sex couples in the United States. Although most states do not outright prohibit adoptions by same-sex partners, it is often very difficult for both partners to adopt the same child. This Note will explore the legal and social ramifications of adoption limitations and the effects they may have on the adoptive children of same-sex couples. Additionally, this Note will explore how the situation can be remedied using the principle of representation reinforcement. Part one of this Note gives a brief overview of the development of the representation reinforcement theory. The representation …

Winning The War Against Childhood Obesity: The Role Of Teachers And Schools In Early Childhood Education, Paula Walker Mar 2011

Winning The War Against Childhood Obesity: The Role Of Teachers And Schools In Early Childhood Education, Paula Walker

Perspectives In Learning

American children are at the epicenter of a global childhood obesity epidemic. Due to increased adiposity, school-aged children are being routinely diagnosed with adult illnesses like Type II diabetes, hypertension, and elevated cholesterol levels. The keys to combating these epidemiological trends are prevention and early intervention. Since the majority of American children are enrolled in school, school-based interventions offer enormous potential in teaching lifelong health habits and curbing the incidence of childhood obesity, especially when these habits are taught proactively as a component of early childhood education. Adiposity rebound is the critical period of increasing body mass index (BMI), that …

Organic Replacement Heifer Enterprise Budget For Walker Dairy, Colton Brodt

Agribusiness

This study was undertaken to determine if Walker Dairy could raise replacement heifers cheaper than the current market price.

The main objective of this report was to calculate how much it costs Walker Dairy to raise a heifer per head. Data collected went into the development of a heifer enterprise budget and determining an average market price. Transfer value in (drop calf price), feed, labor, operating and fixed costs were all factored into the total cost per animal. Also, the data was broken into four different sections of a heifers’ life to aid management in evaluating the cost of raising …

Illuminating The Need For Fiction To Love Within A Postmodern Reality, Alexandria Lightsey Mar 2011

Illuminating The Need For Fiction To Love Within A Postmodern Reality, Alexandria Lightsey

English

Jonathan Safran Foer in his novel Everything is Illuminated (2002), engages and overturns traditional notions of love. In his work, love, as an exalted feeling, does not exist outside of animalistic desire. Instead, as Foer proposes through the numerous and complex relationships of his characters, love exists in an illusion as the individual defines and creates it. To love is to willfully choose to believe in this idealism. For this idealism, whose existence is impossible within the broken nature of this world, must be sustained in an artifice once-removed from reality. Everything is Illuminated thus suggests that without fiction, reality …

Vocalization Behavior Of The Endangered Bahama Oriole (Icterus Northropi): Ontogenetic, Sexual, Temporal, Duetting Pair, And Geographic Variation, Valerie A. Lee

Faculty Works

Many birds communicate via a diverse set of vocalizations, but the contexts, roles, and structure of their varied songs and calls may change with age, differ between sexes, and vary temporally and geographically. In New World orioles, most tropical species exhibit the ancestral states of sexual monochromatism (both sexes have similar plumage) and monovocalism (both sexes sing and often duet together), whereas migratory temperate species tend toward dichromatism (males brightly colored and females drab) and divocalism (males sing almost exclusively). In this study, I examined the vocalizations of the Bahama Oriole, a non-migratory, monochromatic species, to learn where it fits …
