The workshop on Three Rs Approaches in the Production and Quality Control of Fish Vaccines aimed a) to identify animal tests currently stipulated for the production and quality control of fish vaccines and to highlight animal welfare concerns associated with these tests; b) to identify viable options to replace, reduce, and refine animal use for fish vaccine testing; and c) to discuss the way forward and set out how the Three Rs may be implemented without jeopardizing the quality of the vaccines. The workshop participants -- experts from academia, regulatory authorities, a scientific animal welfare organization, and the fish vaccine …

Integrating Values And Ethics Into Wildlife Policy And Management—Lessons From North America, Camilla H. Fox, Marc Bekoff Mar 2011

Integrating Values And Ethics Into Wildlife Policy And Management—Lessons From North America, Camilla H. Fox, Marc Bekoff

Conservation Collection

Few animals provoke as wide a range of emotions as wolves. Some see wolves as icons of a lost wilderness; others see them as intruders. As the battle continues between wolf proponents and opponents, finding solutions that resolve conflicts while supporting the integrity of nature is challenging. In this essay we argue that we need to make room for wolves and other native carnivores who are re-colonizing areas from which they were extirpated. Strategies that foster coexistence are necessary and wildlife agencies must consider all stakeholders and invest adequate resources to inform the public about how to mitigate conflicts between …

Effect Of The Prolactin-Release Inhibitor Quinagolide On Lactating Dairy Cows, P. Lacasse, V. Lollivier, R. Bruckmaier, Y. R. Boisclair, G. F. Wagner, M. Boutinaud Mar 2011

Effect Of The Prolactin-Release Inhibitor Quinagolide On Lactating Dairy Cows, P. Lacasse, V. Lollivier, R. Bruckmaier, Y. R. Boisclair, G. F. Wagner, M. Boutinaud

Farm Animal Husbandry Collection

In most mammals, prolactin (PRL) is essential for maintaining lactation, and yet the short-term suppression of PRL during established lactation by bromocriptine has produced inconsistent effects on milk yield in cows and goats. To assess the effect of the long-term inhibition of PRL release in lactating dairy cows, 5 Holstein cows in early lactation received daily intramuscular injections of 1 mg of the PRL-release inhibitor quinagolide for 9 wk. Four control cows received the vehicle (water) only. During the last week of the treatments, one udder half was milked once a day (1×) and the other twice a day …

Patatin-Related Phospholipase Pplaiiiβ-Induced Changes In Lipid Metabolism Alter Cellulose Content And Cell Elongation In Arabidopsis, Xuemin Wang, Maoyin Li, Sung Chul Bahn, Liang Guo, William Musgrave, Howard Berg, Ruth Welti Mar 2011

Patatin-Related Phospholipase Pplaiiiβ-Induced Changes In Lipid Metabolism Alter Cellulose Content And Cell Elongation In Arabidopsis, Xuemin Wang, Maoyin Li, Sung Chul Bahn, Liang Guo, William Musgrave, Howard Berg, Ruth Welti

Biology Department Faculty Works

The release of fatty acids from membrane lipids has been implicated in various plant processes, and the patatin-related phospholipases (pPLAs) constitute a major enzyme family that catalyzes fatty acid release. The Arabidopsis thaliana pPLA family has 10 members that are classified into three groups. Group 3 pPLAIII has four members but lacks the canonical lipase/esterase consensus catalytic sequences, and their enzymatic activity and cellular functions have not been delineated. Here, we show that pPLAIIIβ hydrolyzes phospholipids and galactolipids and additionally has acyl-CoA thioesterase activity. Alterations of pPLAIIIβ result in changes in lipid levels and composition. pPLAIIIβ-KO plants have longer leaves, …

The Composition, Stability, And Kinship Of Reproductive Coalitions In A Lekking Bird, Thomas Ryder, John Blake, Patricia Parker, Bette Loiselle Mar 2011

The Composition, Stability, And Kinship Of Reproductive Coalitions In A Lekking Bird, Thomas Ryder, John Blake, Patricia Parker, Bette Loiselle

Biology Department Faculty Works

Male vertebrates often form reproductive coalitions to gain access to or defend females. One striking example occurs in the wire-tailed manakin (Pipra filicauda; Aves: Pipridae), where pairs of males form coalitions to display for females on leks. Here, we use data from a long-term study of the wire-tailed manakin to quantify the composition and stability of display coalitions, to examine how coalitions influence behavioral variation, and to determine if males gain indirect genetic benefits from coalition membership. Our data show that coalitions were most often formed between males of different status and that the presence of coalition partners increased a …

Numerical Terradynamic Simulation Group Publications

The magnitude, spatial, and temporal patterns of the terrestrial carbon sink and the underlying mechanisms remain uncertain and need to be investigated. China is important in determining the global carbon balance in terms of both carbon emission and carbon uptake. Of particular importance to climate-change policy and carbon management is the ability to evaluate the relative contributions of multiple environmental factors to net carbon source and sink in China's terrestrial ecosystems. Here the effects of multiple environmental factors (climate, atmospheric CO2, ozone pollution, nitrogen deposition, nitrogen fertilizer application, and land cover/land use change) on net carbon balance in …

The Forgotten Stage Of Forest Succession: Early-Successional Ecosystems On Forest Sites, Mark E. Swanson, Jerry F. Franklin, Robert L. Beschta, Charles M. Crisafulli, Dominick A. Dellasala, Richard L. Hutto, David B. Lindenmaver, Frederick J. Swanson Mar 2011

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Early-successional forest ecosystems that develop after stand-replacing or partial disturbances are diverse in species, processes, and structure. Post-disturbance ecosystems are also often rich in biological legacies, including surviving organisms and organically derived structures, such as woody debris. These legacies and post-disturbance plant communities provide resources that attract and sustain high species diversity, including numerous early-successional obligates, such as certain woodpeckers and arthropods. Early succession is the only period when tree canopies do not dominate the forest site, and so this stage can be characterized by high productivity of plant species (including herbs and shrubs), complex food webs, large nutrient fluxes, …

Telling The Gospel Master Story In The Google Era, Timothy R. Orton Mar 2011

Telling The Gospel Master Story In The Google Era, Timothy R. Orton

Doctor of Ministry

Narrative is fundamentally important to the human condition because the very fabric of our lives and existence is composed of a story-line-in-sequence; a narrative. The premise upon which this study is built holds that the personal story of each individualhis or her mininarrative1--cannot have meaning unless it is framed in a viable masterstory, or metanarrative. I believe humans were made in God's image for the purpose of eternal and unbroken fellowship with Him and unless one's personal narrative is framed by the metanarrative of the Gospel, he or she cannot be a spiritually complete person. This dissertation claims that three …

Fgf4-Dependent Stem Cells Derived From Rat Blastocysts Differentiate Along The Trophoblast Lineage, Kazuo Asanoma, M. A.Karim Rumi, Lindsey N. Kent, Damayanti Chakraborty, Stephen J. Renaud, Norio Wake, Dong Soo Lee, Kaiyu Kubota, Michael J. Soares

Paediatrics Publications

Differentiated trophoblast cell lineages arise from trophoblast stem (TS) cells. To date such a stem cell population has only been established in the mouse. The objective of this investigation was to establish TS cell populations from rat blastocysts. Blastocysts were cultured individually on a feeder layer of rat embryonic fibroblasts (REFs) in fibroblast growth factor-4 (FGF4) and heparin supplemented culture medium. Once cell colonies were established REF feeder layers could be replaced with REF conditioned medium. The blastocyst-derived cell lines, in either proliferative or differentiated states, did not express genes indicative of ICM-derived tissues. In the proliferative state the cells …

Assessment Of Pathways For The Introduction And Spread Of Mycobacterium Bovis In The United States, Katie Portacci, Jason Lombard, Lauren Abrahamsen, Eric Bush, Charles Fossler, Robert Harris, Kamina Johnson, Ryan S. Miller, Dianna Mitchell, Randy Pritchard, Steven Sweeney, Todd Weaver

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

Bovine tuberculosis (TB) was responsible for more losses among U.S. farm animals in the early 20th century than all other infectious diseases combined. The Cooperative State-Federal Tuberculosis Eradication Program (established in 1917 and administered by APHIS, State animal health agencies, and U.S. livestock producers) has nearly eradicated bovine TB from the nation’s livestock population. However, despite the many accomplishments of the program, bovine TB remains a serious and costly disease of livestock in the United States. In 1992, VS conducted an assessment to identify pathways for the introduction and spread of bovine TB, in order to develop the most effective …

The Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act As An Antidiscrimination Law, Jessica L. Roberts Mar 2011

The Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act As An Antidiscrimination Law, Jessica L. Roberts

Notre Dame Law Review

This Article provides the first in-depth reading of the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA) as an antidiscrimination statute. GINA, touted as the first major civil rights legislation of the new century, passed in May 2008. Thus, both to understand GINA's potential impact, as well as to improve its efficacy, the statute must be analyzed as an antidiscrimination law. When read as an antidiscrimination statute, GINA takes a clear position on one of the most contested issues in that area of law: antisubordination versus anticlassification. This debate queries whether antidiscrimination law should seek to elevate the social status of certain subordinated …

The Implications Of Chronic Pain Models For Rehabilitation Of Distal Radius Fracture, Saurabh Mehta, Joy Macdermid, Mary Tremblay Mar 2011

The Implications Of Chronic Pain Models For Rehabilitation Of Distal Radius Fracture, Saurabh Mehta, Joy Macdermid, Mary Tremblay

Physical Therapy Faculty Research

Distal radius fracture (DRF) is the most common fracture and usually occurs as a result of a fall. Most patients recover following DRF with minimal residual pain or disability; however, a small subset of patients continue to experience pain and disability even one year after the injury. Currently, there are no practice guidelines for early identification and treatment of patients who are potentially at greater risk of developing these adverse outcomes. As a result, hand therapy management of patients following DRF does not incorporate screening of these at-risk patients. The objective of this paper is to apply constructs from learned …

The Ultrafast Photoisomerizations Of Rhodopsin And Bathorhodopsin Are Modulated By Bond Length Alternation And Hoop Driven Electronic Effects, Igor Schapiro, Mikhail Nikolaevich Ryazantsev, Luis Manuel Frutos, Nicolas Ferre, Roland Lindh, Massimo Olivucci Mar 2011

The Ultrafast Photoisomerizations Of Rhodopsin And Bathorhodopsin Are Modulated By Bond Length Alternation And Hoop Driven Electronic Effects, Igor Schapiro, Mikhail Nikolaevich Ryazantsev, Luis Manuel Frutos, Nicolas Ferre, Roland Lindh, Massimo Olivucci

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Rhodopsin (Rh) and bathorhodopsin (bathoRh) quantum-mechanics/molecular-mechanics models based on ab initio multiconfigurational wave functions are employed to look at the light induced pi-bond breaking and reconstitution occurring during the Rh -> bathoRh and bathoRh -> Rh isomerizations. More specifically, semiclassical trajectory computations are used to compare the excited (S-1) and ground (S-0) state dynamics characterizing the opposite steps of the Rh/bathoRh photochromic cycle during the first 200 fs following photoexcitation. We show that the information contained in these data provide an unprecedented insight into the sub-picosecond pi-bond reconstitution process which is at the basis of the reactivity of the protein …

Three Stories About Nature: Property, The Environment, And Ecosystem Services, Keith H. Hirokawa Mar 2011

Three Stories About Nature: Property, The Environment, And Ecosystem Services, Keith H. Hirokawa

Mercer Law Review

Property is the process of dividing the world into bits that may be subjected to private control. As such, how we understand the world, its characteristics, and its processes is very important. If, for instance, we think of water as an infinite resource that serves growth needs, we might not be concerned with how that resource is acquired, used, or even wasted. On the other hand, if we believe that water is a scarce and essential resource, we may find that an allocation scheme bears the weight of accomplishing many social and economic objectives. Nature matters because our understanding of …

Methamphetamine Induces Striatal Cell Death Followed By The Generation Of New Cells And A Second Round Of Cell Death In Mice, I. K. Tulloch, L Afanador, J Zhu, J. A. Angulo Mar 2011

Methamphetamine Induces Striatal Cell Death Followed By The Generation Of New Cells And A Second Round Of Cell Death In Mice, I. K. Tulloch, L Afanador, J Zhu, J. A. Angulo

Publications and Research

Our laboratory has been investigating the impact of a neurotoxic exposure to methamphetamine (METH) on cellular components of the striatum post-synaptic to the dopaminergic terminals. A systemic bolus injection of METH (30 mg/kg, ip) induces the production of new cells in the striatum during a period lasting from 24-48 hours after METH. The newly generated cells arise from dormant striatal progenitors and not from the subventricular zone. The newly generated cells display glial phenotypes and begin to die 24 hours after birth, or 2.5 days post-METH. The protracted phase of cell death lasts for at least three months post-METH at …
