Psychological Behaviorism Theory Of Bipolar Disorder, Helmut P.R. Riedel, Elaine M. Heiby, Stephen Kopetskie Mar 2011

Psychological Behaviorism Theory Of Bipolar Disorder, Helmut P.R. Riedel, Elaine M. Heiby, Stephen Kopetskie

The Psychological Record

This review addresses the etiology of bipolar disorder and
presents the literature within a psychological behaviorism
framework (Staats, 1996; Staats & Heiby, 1985). The proposed
theory attempts to provide an integrative developmental approach
that is grounded in established behavioral principles. The bipolar
theory posits 15 hypotheses based on past and concurrent
biological and situational factors as well as their interactions with
an individual's basic behavioral repertoires. Implications for
subclassification and treatment research are noted.

Human Endogenous Sodium Pump Inhibitors Measurement, Source, Synthesis And Regulation, Jie Ma Mar 2011

Human Endogenous Sodium Pump Inhibitors Measurement, Source, Synthesis And Regulation, Jie Ma

Theses and Dissertations

The sodium pump (SP or Na+,K+-ATPase) is a membrane embedded protein complex that pumps 3 sodium ions out and 2 potassium ions into the cell per cycle and in so doing creates a cell membrane electrochemical potential. The membrane potential is critical for any functional cell. In the vasculature, reduction in the voltage potential causes vascular smooth muscle contraction and a narrowing of blood vessels (vasoconstriction) which can lead to increased blood pressure (hypertension). Substantial research over the past several decades has provided a vast amount of research on SP inhibitors, sometimes called endogenous digitalis-like factors (EDLF). Increased levels of …

Clean Image Synthesis And Target Numerical Marching For Optical Imaging With Backscattering Light, Min Xu, Yang Pu, Wubao Wang Mar 2011

Clean Image Synthesis And Target Numerical Marching For Optical Imaging With Backscattering Light, Min Xu, Yang Pu, Wubao Wang

Publications and Research

Scanning backscattering imaging and independent component analysis (ICA) are used to probe targets hidden in the subsurface of a turbid medium. A new correction procedure is proposed and used to synthesize a “clean” image of a homogeneous host medium numerically from a set of raster-scanned “dirty” backscattering images of the medium with embedded targets. The independent intensity distributions on the surface of the medium corresponding to individual targets are then unmixed using ICA of the difference between the set of dirty images and the clean image. The target positions are localized by a novel analytical method, which marches the target …

Are Elevated Nutrient Levels In Arctic Tundra Ponds Due To Permafrost Thawing?, Francisco R. Reyes Jr.^, Vanessa Lougheed*

COURI Symposium Abstracts, Spring 2011

Continued warming of the arctic tundra in northern Alaska can have important ecological implications for freshwater ecosystems. An increased active layer depth can lead to nutrient release from permafrost. Comparisons of water quality parameters from the 1970s and 2008-09 from tundra ponds in Barrow, Alaska indicated an increase in water column Total Phosphorus (TP), Soluble Reactive Phosphorus (SRP), Total Dissolved Phosphorus (TDP) and algal biomass (phytoplankton) over time. We designed an incubation experiment to look at nutrient release rates from permafrost and active layer cores under different warming scenarios. Although water column data have shown an increase in phosphorus species …

Climate Related Changes In Chemical Characteristics Of Arctic Tundra Ponds Over The Past 40 Years., David A. Hernandez^, Francisco R. Reyes, Christian G. Andresen, Vanessa L. Lougheed*

COURI Symposium Abstracts, Spring 2011

The Arctic tundra ponds at the International Biological Program (IBP) site in Barrow, AK were first studied in the 1970s and were re-visited in 2010. Recognizing modifications in the ponds’ structure and activity is critical to distinguishing possible climate-related impacts on Arctic freshwater ecosystems.  The main objective of this project was to re-sample historical pond research sites in order to establish how the physical and chemical characteristics of the ponds have been altered over the past 40 years.  Preliminary data from the same IBP ponds sampled in 2009-10 and the 1970’s demonstrate an increase of phosphorus and a decrease in …

Nuclear Scaffold Attachment Sites Within Encode Regions Associate With Actively Transcribed Genes, Christopher M. Taylor, Mignon A. Keaton, Ryan M. Layer, Anindya Dutta

Computer Science Faculty Publications

The human genome must be packaged and organized in a functional manner
for the regulation of DNA replication and transcription. The nuclear
scaffold/matrix, consisting of structural and functional nuclear
proteins, remains after extraction of nuclei and anchors loops of DNA.
In the search for cis-elements functioning as chromatin domain
boundaries, we identified 453 nuclear scaffold attachment sites
purified by lithium-3,5-iodosalicylate extraction of HeLa nuclei across
30 Mb of the human genome studied by the ENCODE pilot project. The
scaffold attachment sites mapped predominately near expressed genes and
localized near transcription start sites and the ends of genes but not
to …

The Effects Of Acute And Chronic Nicotine On Gaba And Dopamine Neurons In The Midbrain Ventral Tegmental Area, Devin Hardy Taylor Mar 2011

The Effects Of Acute And Chronic Nicotine On Gaba And Dopamine Neurons In The Midbrain Ventral Tegmental Area, Devin Hardy Taylor

Theses and Dissertations

Nicotine (NIC) abuse involves activation of midbrain dopamine (DA) neurons and NIC addiction involves neuroadaptive changes in the mesolimbic DA reward system. GABA neurons in the midbrain ventral tegmental area (VTA) express α4β2-containing nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs), whose activation increases GABAergic input to DA neurons. However, this initial effect is decreased after chronic NIC treatment (as in the case of smokers) by inducing nAChR desensitization. Thus, GABA neuron inhibition results in increased DA release in limbic structures such as the nucleus accumbens. To support this hypothesis, we evaluated the effects of acute and chronic NIC on GAD-67 positive neurons in …
