The Bee-Haviour Of Scientists: An Analogy Of Science From The World Of Bees, Ben Trubody
The Bee-Haviour Of Scientists: An Analogy Of Science From The World Of Bees, Ben Trubody
Between the Species
I am going to compare the strategies and communication bees use in order to locate and retrieve nectar to the world of science and the scientist. The analogy is intentionally anthropomorphic but I wish to argue that if successful bees made assumptions they would be similar to those of the scientist: flowers can be regarded as facts, nectar as knowledge, honey as technology and their ‘waggle-dance’ as communication of ideas. I would like to say that this is to be used as an analogy and should not be taken to be a statement of the scientific method as an emergent …

Automated Upscaling Of River Networks For Macroscale Hydrological Modeling, Huan Wu, John S. Kimball, Nate Mantua, Jack Arthur Stanford
Automated Upscaling Of River Networks For Macroscale Hydrological Modeling, Huan Wu, John S. Kimball, Nate Mantua, Jack Arthur Stanford
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
We developed a hierarchical dominant river tracing (DRT) algorithm for automated extraction and spatial upscaling of basin flow directions and river networks using fine-scale hydrography inputs (e. g., flow direction, river networks, and flow accumulation). In contrast with previous upscaling methods, the DRT algorithm utilizes information on global and local drainage patterns from baseline fine-scale hydrography to determine upscaled flow directions and other critical variables including upscaled basin area, basin shape, and river lengths. The DRT algorithm preserves the original baseline hierarchical drainage structure by tracing each entire flow path from headwater to river mouth at fine scale while prioritizing …

Children's Voices: Students' Attitudes About Routine And Nonroutine Mathematics, Deborah E. Seacrest
Children's Voices: Students' Attitudes About Routine And Nonroutine Mathematics, Deborah E. Seacrest
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Theses and Other Student Research
This dissertation is a case study focused on the question, "What are students' attitudes toward school mathematics and toward nonroutine math problems and mathematical games?" It addresses the definitions of some of those terms and then moves on to a literature review that suggests that some change in the curriculum may be needed. In an attempt to begin determining whether nonroutine problems and mathematical games could help, students in two different types of classes were introduced to such problems and games. Their attitudes were assessed using a variety of methods, including observation, interview, and journal writing.
The games and problems …

Advances And Future Challenges In Adenoviral Vector Pharmacology And Targeting, Reeti Khare, Christopher Y. Chen, Eric A. Weaver, Michael A. Barry
Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications
Adenovirus is a robust vector for therapeutic applications, but its use is limited by our understanding of its complex in vivo pharmacology. In this review we describe the necessity of identifying its natural, widespread, and multifaceted interactions with the host since this information will be crucial for efficiently redirecting virus into target cells. In the rational design of vectors, the notion of overcoming a sequence of viral “sinks” must be combined with re-targeting to target populations with capsid as well as shielding the vectors from pre-existing or toxic immune responses. It must also be noted that most known adenoviral pharmacology …

COURI Symposium Abstracts, Spring 2011
Bacteriophage SN is a virulent phage that selectively infects the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It was isolated from Lake Chernoe in Russia and it is related to the PB1-like species of the Myoviridae family. The DNA genome is composed of 66,391 base pairs, has 89 predicted open reading frames, and encodes more than 20 structural proteins. One of the open reading frames of this newly discovered bacteriophage has high sequence identity to other lysozyme and chitinase genes. It is therefore assumed that this protein encoded by bacteriophage SN is utilized for digestion of the host cell wall prior to injection of …

Evolutionary Genetics Of African Toads (Anura: Bufonidae: Amietophrynus), Nancy P. Conkey^, Eli Greenbaum*
COURI Symposium Abstracts, Spring 2011
African "true" toads (frog genus Amietophrynus) include 39 morphologically conserved species that live in a panoply of habitats from the fringes of the Sahara to the mountains of South Africa. We examined the evolutionary relationships of these African bufonids by sequencing a 550 bp fragment of the 16S mitochondrial gene, and based on these results, collected a further 4 kb of combined mitochondrial (12S–16S) and nuclear (CXCR4, POMC, and RAG1) sequence data from sixty-two divergent samples of the genus Amietophrynus, and several bufonid outgroups. DNA sequences were analyzed with maximum parsimony,maximum-likelihood and Bayesian inference with the programs PAUP, RAxML and …

Initialization Of Structural Proteomic Studies Of The Giant Marine Virus Crov, Duer Bolotaulo^, Nancy Rondeau, Gustavo A. Avila, Matthias G. Fischer, Curtis A. Suttle, Chuan Xiao*
COURI Symposium Abstracts, Spring 2011
The existence of cellular genes in viruses such as the nucleocytoplasmic large DNA viruses (NCLDV) has led to not only the redefinition of the virus but also the mystery of the origin of these genes. Cafeteria roenbergensis virus (CroV) is a giant marine virus in the NCLDV clade. Information obtained from structural proteomics studies of CroV can be compared with known cellular counterparts, elucidating the evolutionary relationship between virus and cell in a three-dimensional structural aspect. CroV's major capsid protein gene (MCP) and five CroV genes, (CDS 84, 115, 143, 149,152) including a photolyase and an oxidoreductase, have been chosen …

COURI Symposium Abstracts, Spring 2011
Bacteriophage phi-EL is a virus that attacks the human pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa. One of the gene products from phi-EL is a putative endolysin. Endolysin is an enzyme produced during gene expression in the lytic cycle of the bacteriophage. Its function is to digest the peptidoglycan layer of the host cell wall, thereby releasing the newly formed virions. In order to confirm the identity of this putative endolysin, the gene product was transformed into competent E. coli cells, expressed to high levels and purified to high homogeneity using nickel affinity and size exclusion chromatography. The peptidoglycan-hydrolyzing activity of the protein …

Leptin Protects Dendritic Cells From Chemically-Induced Cell Death, Yadira Arellano^, Jeffrey Charles Sivils, Kristine Marie Garza*
COURI Symposium Abstracts, Spring 2011
Leptin is a pleiotropic adipokine that exerts its physiological effects by binding to its receptor, which is expressed in many immune cells including T cells, macrophages, and dendritic cells. Multidrug resistance-associated protein (MRP) is a transmembrane transporter commonly associated with cancer cells conferring resistance to chemotherapy. The purpose of this study is to determine if leptin supersedes the cytotoxic death signal in dendritic cells. We further hypothesize that the mechanism underlying leptin protection is a result of over expression of MRPs. To address this question, we examined the effect of leptin on monocytes treated with cytotoxic drugs in vitro. Bone …

Act 35, New School Performance Ratings, And School Choice, Nathan C. Jensen, Gary W. Ritter
Policy Briefs
Act 35 was a product of the Lakeview v Huckabee case and the related Extraordinary Legislative Session. The law § 6-15-2101 of the Arkansas code required the establishment of three school ratings: a rating of the school’s current academic performance (or status), a rating of the school’s academic improvement (see the OEP policy brief on the new improvement rating) 1 , and a rating based on the school’s fiscal practices. The first set of improvement scores were reported based on the standardized tests administered in spring of 2007 and 2008. The first ratings based on current academic performance are to …

Despite an apparent increase in undergraduate neuroscience programs offered by colleges and universities, there has been little effort to document this growth. In the present report we describe our analysis of the expansion of undergraduate neuroscience programs of study over more than 20 years and detail a number of institutional characteristics of colleges and universities that offer undergraduate neuroscience programs. These data reveal more than 100 institutions with undergraduate neuroscience programs as well as over 2000 college graduates that majored in neuroscience in 2008–2009. Understanding the current number as well as growth trends of undergraduate neuroscience programs found in U.S. …

Journal Articles: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology
BACKGROUND: Pancreatic cancer (PC) harbours an activated point mutation (Kras(G12D)) in the Kras proto-oncogene that has been demonstrated to promote the development of PC.
METHODS: This study was designed to investigate the effect of the oncogenic Kras(G12D) allele on aggressiveness and metastatic potential of PC cells. We silenced the oncogenic Kras(G12D) allele expression in CD18/HPAF and ASPC1 cell lines by stable expression of shRNA specific to the Kras(G12D)allele.
RESULTS: The Kras(G12D) knockdown cells exhibited a significant decrease in motility (P
CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study suggest that the Kras(G12D) allele promotes metastasis in PC cells partly through the downregulation …

Detection of analytes on the zepto-molar (10^-^2^1M) level has been achieved using a field-effect bio-detector. By applying a gating voltage to enzymes immobilized on the working electrode of the detector, amplification of the biocatalytic current was observed. The amplification is attributed to the modification of the tunnel barrier between the enzyme and the electrode by the gating voltage-induced electric field which exists at the solution-electrode interface. The detection was demonstrated with the glucose oxidase (GOx)-glucose and alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH)-ethanol biocatalytic systems. Glucose at zepto-molar level was detected with zepto-molar detection resolution. Equivalently, 30 glucose …

Human Trafficking Victims And Their Children: Assessing Needs, Vulnerabilities, Strengths, And Survivorship, Noel B. Busch-Armendariz, Maura B. Nsonwu, Laurie Cook Heffron
Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk
Given the increased awareness and attention to human trafficking, including the establishment of federal laws and policies, federally funded task forces that provide law enforcement responses, and specialized victim services, it is important to assess the impact of these procedures and services on survivors/victims of international human trafficking and their immigrant children. By federal definition, certified victims of international human trafficking are eligible for all services provided to refugees in this country, including reunification with their minor children. This research is based on a qualitative study conducted in Austin and Houston, Texas with human trafficking victims/survivors. The project’s goal was …
