Emotional Risk Factors For Substance Abuse In A Chronic Pain Population: Developing A Predictive Model And Testing Methods For Assessing Stigmatized Behaviors, Lindsay Margaret-Sander Oberleitner Jan 2011

Emotional Risk Factors For Substance Abuse In A Chronic Pain Population: Developing A Predictive Model And Testing Methods For Assessing Stigmatized Behaviors, Lindsay Margaret-Sander Oberleitner

Wayne State University Dissertations

There are currently few factors guiding physicians' decisions as to whether an individual patient may need additional regulation of pain medications because of risks. The limited predictive factors applied to prescription opioid abuse in chronic pain patients is surprising given the breadth of personal, cognitive, and emotional factors explored in both chronic pain and substance abuse literatures broadly. The present study had two purposes. First, concurrent risk factors for prescription misuse and substance abuse in chronic pain patients were explored, specifically examining whether the addition of emotional factors to the traditionally used risk factors improves prediction of prescription and substance …

ABSTRACT

CIRCADIAN RHYTHM OF CORTISOL AND ESTRADIOL IN HEALTHY WOMEN

by

KARYN G. BUTLER

AUGUST 2011

Advisor: Dr. Jean E. Davis

Major: Nursing

Degree: Doctor of Philosophy

Daily variation in human processes and behaviors has been identified for centuries. Study of these circadian rhythms demonstrates their role in human health. Sickness behaviors include alterations in affect, sleep quality and energy. The study of the relationship between circadian rhythms has been limited to isolated rhythms. The role of temporal relationships among rhythms has received little attention. Sickness behaviors are prevalent in many disorders including depression, cancer, and autoimmune disorders. Two hormones …

Examination Of Dispositions And Practices In Diversity: The Impact Of A Teacher Education Course Promoting Culturally And Responsive Pedagogy, Deuslene Leite Bastos Jan 2011

Examination Of Dispositions And Practices In Diversity: The Impact Of A Teacher Education Course Promoting Culturally And Responsive Pedagogy, Deuslene Leite Bastos

Wayne State University Dissertations

Assimilation ideology guiding teachers and policy makers to mainstream immigrant children into the American schools has prevailed in spite of pluralists' efforts for reform schools to provide more opportunities for culturally and linguistically diverse students. Research shows a need to change assimilation driven policies and practices which are harmful to students into a reconstructivist ideology that has shown to be more conducive for the application of culturally responsive teaching. Teacher education courses aimed to prepare teacher candidates for diverse classrooms have shown limitations due to abundant focus on theory or lack of elements in course work that are known to …

Estonians And Russians In Contemporary Estonia: Is The Soviet Past Still Dominating The Present?, Aksel Kirch, Tarmo Tuisk, Hanna-‐Hulda Reinkort Jan 2011

Estonians And Russians In Contemporary Estonia: Is The Soviet Past Still Dominating The Present?, Aksel Kirch, Tarmo Tuisk, Hanna-‐Hulda Reinkort

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

The current article focuses on a study about Estonians and Russians living in Estonia. As a method we used Identity Structure Analysis (ISA) to investigate their patterns of identification with 'Estonians', 'Russians in Estonia', 'Russians in Russia', and 'Estonian Government'. The themes embraced constructions of the past, including the context of the Soviet Union's role in WWII. Findings suggest that alarming events on the streets of Tallinn (April 2007) appear to be related to the role of the Soviet Union in WWII inter alia, where its construction as 'occupier' of Eastern Europe (as opposed to 'liberator') forms a 'core evaluative …

Host Acculturation Orientation: Some Preliminary Impressions Of The French Students On Ethnic Minority Groups In Montpellier, S. France, Jyoti Verma

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

The objective was to study the host acculturation orientation of a sample of 100 French students of a S. France University. For this purpose a nine-items Host Acculturation Scale was used. Observations gave the impression that the students considered it significantly ‘more important’ that the immigrants maintained their heritage culture in their homes rather than doing so in general or at the workplace. Furthermore, it was considered only ‘partially important’ that the immigrants adopted the French norms, values and customs in general and at the workplace, and ‘not important at all’ that they did so in their homes. Ethnic groups …

Autonomy And Care In Medicine, Hille Haker Jan 2011

Autonomy And Care In Medicine, Hille Haker

Theology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This paper argues that the core principle of bioethics, autonomy, is rooted both in the 20th century history of the development of new medical technologies as in political liberalism transferred to medical practices, rendering the medical decision-making of patients a centerpiece of medical interventions. The paper shows how the ambiguity in the interpretation of autonomy reflects the ambivalence of bioethics towards making normative claims on the moral agents insofar as these go beyond the respect for a patient’s autonomy. In the second part, the paper analyzes the alternative approach of care ethics, which intends to emphasize both the vulnerability and …

Impact Of Spiritual Leadership On Unit Performance [Retracted], Louis W. Fry, Sean T. Hannah, Michael Noel, Fred O. Walumbwa Jan 2011

Impact Of Spiritual Leadership On Unit Performance [Retracted], Louis W. Fry, Sean T. Hannah, Michael Noel, Fred O. Walumbwa

United States Army: Publications

Issues regarding workplace spirituality have received increased attention in the organizational sciences. The implications of workplace spirituality for leadership theory, research, and practice make this a fast growing area of new research and inquiry by scholars. The purpose of this research was to test a dynamic relationship between spiritual leadership and spiritual wellbeing (i.e., a sense of calling and membership), and key organizational outcomes in a sample of emerging military leaders. Using structural equation modeling (SEM), results revealed a positive and significant relationship between spiritual leadership and several unit-level outcomes, including organizational commitment and four measures of performance. These relationships …

Creating A Culture For Leading And Performing In The Extreme, Donald H. Horner Jr, Luann P. Pannell, Dennis W. Yates Jan 2011

Creating A Culture For Leading And Performing In The Extreme, Donald H. Horner Jr, Luann P. Pannell, Dennis W. Yates

United States Army: Publications

By early 2008 in the Iraq War, the positive effects of the U.S. "surge" had started to become visible in the streets of Baghdad, as shops began to reopen and people again filled the streets.1 Despite these outwardly positive appearances, a sinister undercurrent flowed through the population. Rumors ran rampant in Iraqi military and government circles that the radical cleric Muqtada al-Sadr's Mahdi Army was about to launch an offensive against the government of Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, a fellow Shiite, because of Sadr's unhappiness with his waning political influence.

In the neighborhood of Zafaraniyah, in Baghdad's southeastern quadrant, Sadrist …

Selection Requirements To Work In Future Atm Systems, Hinnerk Eißfeldt, Alexander Heintz, Dirk Schulze Kissing Jan 2011

Selection Requirements To Work In Future Atm Systems, Hinnerk Eißfeldt, Alexander Heintz, Dirk Schulze Kissing

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2011

Different findings concerning staff selection requirements for future Air Traffic Management (ATM) resulting from empirical studies and expert judgement are summarised. The biggest impacts are foreseen for ATCO’s, commercial pilots, ATM technical staff and a/c maintenance staff, mainly related to advanced ATM concept features. An empirical study involving ATCOs and pilots encompassing workshops and simulations studying elements of a free flight scenario revealed significant changes in ability requirements for ATCOs and pilots. They indicate higher ability requirements for pilots in future ATM systems and only small changes for air traffic controllers. Pilot and air traffic controller profiles are likely to …

Immigration And The Extreme Right: An Analysis Of Recent Voting Trends In Western Europe, Andrew Walchuk Jan 2011

Immigration And The Extreme Right: An Analysis Of Recent Voting Trends In Western Europe, Andrew Walchuk

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Western European politics have been marked over the last couple of decades by a fierce debate about the place of Europe’s increasingly large immigrant population in society. Across the continent, far-right parties campaigning on nationalistic platforms opposing immigration have seen great electoral success. The debate is undoubtedly becoming more heated as more immigrants pour into the area, and these anti-immigrant parties seem to have established themselves in the political arena. Immigration does not appear to be slowing down at any point in the near future, so what is going to happen to these far-right parties as we move into the …

Demographic And Offense-Related Variables In Pennsylvania Court-Ordered Placements For Juveniles, Kristen N. Asplin, Diane T. Marsh, Adeline Beighley Jan 2011

Demographic And Offense-Related Variables In Pennsylvania Court-Ordered Placements For Juveniles, Kristen N. Asplin, Diane T. Marsh, Adeline Beighley

Contemporary Issues in Juvenile Justice

When making placement decisions for juvenile offenders, court officers often consider the types of charges listed against them. We examined the pattern of offenses charged to residents of 7 types of placements in 1 county in Pennsylvania over a period of 2 years. Consistent, predictable patterns were found across placements, with more restrictive placements assigned to juveniles with more severe offenses, although there remained a considerable degree of variation in offenses represented in each placement type. The pattern of placements was different between genders as well, with female offenders being placed in less restrictive care even more often than their …

Self-Determination Theory And Juvenile Delinquency: A Validation Of A Combined Theory For Understanding Youth In Conflict With The Law, Sibley Y. Hawkins, Forrest A. Novy Jan 2011

Self-Determination Theory And Juvenile Delinquency: A Validation Of A Combined Theory For Understanding Youth In Conflict With The Law, Sibley Y. Hawkins, Forrest A. Novy

Contemporary Issues in Juvenile Justice

In this study, we propose an expanded theory of delinquency that integrates social learning, control, and motivationally based explanations of human behavior. We posit that delinquency occurs partly due to attempts to fulfill 3 developmentally necessary psychological needs; auton-omy, competence, and relatedness. Melding elements of 3 theories (Social Control Theory [Hirschi, 1972], General Crime Theory [Gottfredson & Hirschi, 1990], and Self Determination Theory [Deci & Ryan, 1985, 2000a, 2008]), provides a better understanding of the precursors to delinquency and possible approaches to mitigating their impact. The study examines: (a) the extent to which the 3 basic psychological needs (competence, …

The Throw Down Over Takedowns: An Analysis Of The Lenz Interpretation Of 17 U.S.C. § 512(F), 10 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 792 (2011), Ian Rubenstrunk

UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law

Recently, a YouTube user and mother of two, Stephanie Lenz, filed a lawsuit against Universal Music Corporation which had the potential for broad impact on the internet. Everyone from politicians, to teachers, to musical artists could have gained more protection of their rights as internet users. With millions of people having access to the internet and YouTube “vloggers” reaching the million mark in subscribers, the court’s interpretation of 17 U.S.C. § 512(f) could have had a significant impact. The issue in the case was what “any damages” meant in a clause creating liability for a party that incorrectly has material …

Principled Legal Pragmatism: Reconciling Posner And Dewey On Law And Democracy, Kory Spencer Sorrell Jan 2011

Principled Legal Pragmatism: Reconciling Posner And Dewey On Law And Democracy, Kory Spencer Sorrell

St. Thomas Law Review

The pressing practical question is how to cultivate democratic reconstruction? And here again, Posner's insights are both helpful and continuous with the pragmatism of James and Dewey. Both James and Dewey sought reform not primarily through deliberation, but through institutional reform. As Posner insists, "[w]e must accept the irreducible plurality of goals and preferences within a morally heterogeneous society such as that of the United States, and proceed from there." And proceeding from there-successfully, not just aspirationally-means discarding idealistic notions of democracy in favor of institutional and social arrangements that support a morally diverse community, the members of which are …
