Black/White Biracial Identitiy And Self-Concept In The U.S., Alexis Schwartz Jan 2011

Black/White Biracial Identitiy And Self-Concept In The U.S., Alexis Schwartz

Theses & ETDs

In this study, I explore whether racial appearance is a meaning-laden symbol by which U.S. black/white biracial participants and their social contacts reflexively create their self-concepts and identity, and whether appearance affects their racial behaviors. Thirty-eight survey participants were of both black and white heritage, between 18 and 25 years old. Results indicated that their self-concepts were influenced by their interactions with social contacts and, therefore, their self-reported racial-typical behaviors were correlated with their racial appearances.

Control, Discipline, And Punish: Black Masculinity And (In)Visible Whiteness In The Nba, Rachel Alicia Griffin, Bernadette Marie Calafell

Critical Race and Ethnic Studies Faculty Scholarship

This chapter critiques the “allegorical power of sport” in relation to historical and contemporary manifestations of white supremacy. In particular, it argues that media discourse about the NBA commissioner David Stern as well as his public statements demonstrate white paternalism. From the onset of his career as commissioner, Stern normalized whiteness as a nonracialized space by repeating discourse that marked the racialized “other” as criminal. Moreover, in a popular sport in which seventy five percent of the players are black but virtually all of the corporate owners and commissioner are white, Stern's enforcement of extreme penalties and policies affecting primarily …

Common Factors That African American Adults Attribute To Their Graduation From A Predominantly African American Midwestern School District: A Case Study, Adriennie Yvette Hatten

ETD Archive

This qualitative research study examines the reflections of African American adults on their high school journey to graduation in the late 20th Century from one Midwestern public school district where African- American students represented the majority of the student body. The particular emphasis of this study was to identify common factors that the participants perceive as critical to their own high school graduation, as the measure of academic success and lifelong learning. This dissertation addresses two research questions through the methodology of narrative inquiry: 1) what are the experiences of the African American adults who were educated in the same …

Across the past two decades, public officials have debated and social scientists have studied the importance of tourist amenities in attracting and retaining human capital. Few studies, however, have examined the relationship between tourist amenities and the migration of educated workers. Information of this nature is needed by public officials considering the best use of tax dollars to attract human capital and advance local economies. This dissertation addresses this need an analysis of the relationship between built amenities and the migration of educated workers. This study's focus was on the importance of built amenities such as sports facilities, museums, and …

But What Does This Have To Do With Science?: Building The Case For Engineering In K-12, Micah Maranda Arafah Jan 2011

But What Does This Have To Do With Science?: Building The Case For Engineering In K-12, Micah Maranda Arafah

ETD Archive

A national push for reform in STEM K-12 education and a raised focus on including engineering in the classroom have emphasized the necessity for specific professional development opportunities for teachers. These programs are available however, they are typically very expensive and consequently inaccessible to most educators in the public school sector. The Engineering Education Summer Conference (EESC) is a three day professional development conference for K-12 teachers interested in using engineering in their classrooms and is funded primarily by the University Transportation Center at Cleveland State University. Its goals are to debunk biases of engineers and engineering, provide resources and …

Diversification Through Discourse: A Bakhtinian View Of Homer Hickam's Red Helmet, Julia A. Wilson Jan 2011

Diversification Through Discourse: A Bakhtinian View Of Homer Hickam's Red Helmet, Julia A. Wilson

ETD Archive

Homer Hickam's 2007 book, Red Helmet tells the story of a New York business woman's (Song) transformation into a West Virginian coal miner. Red Helmet is a modern, commercial romance that fits into the category of Appalachian working-class literature. The introduction of this study details the characteristics of regional and Appalachian working-class literature and aligns the characteristics to the plot of Red Helmet. A discussion of Bakhtin's theories of heteroglossia, hybridization, language stratification, dialogism, and discourse laid the foundation for the analysis of Song's transformation from an outsider (a non-native of West Virginia) to an accepted and productive member of …

Why Unions Matter, 2nd Edition, Victor G. Devinatz Jan 2011

Why Unions Matter, 2nd Edition, Victor G. Devinatz

Faculty Publications – Management

At the end of the 21st century’s first decade, the U. S. trade union movement is undoubtedly in crisis. Problems abound, with no easy solutions in sight. Elected in 1995 to lead the American Federation of Labor–Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL–CIO), the “New Voice” team headed by John Sweeney buoyed the hopes of trade union reformers that it would overhaul the stultifying bureaucracy of the AFL–CIO, which Lane Kirkland, the previous federation president, did little to dismantle or significantly alter during his 16 years in office. Additionally, Sweeney promised to beef up the resources devoted to union organizing in an …

Talking And Not Talking: Sexual Education And Ethics For Young Women Within The Evangelical Movement In America, Kate Sargent Jan 2011

Talking And Not Talking: Sexual Education And Ethics For Young Women Within The Evangelical Movement In America, Kate Sargent

CGU Theses & Dissertations

In this paper I intend to discuss the ways in which sex, sexuality, and the female body are treated in the discourse within the Evangelical movement, particularly with regard to teenaged and young girls. I will focus on the way young women are talked to about sex, and how they are socialized and educated to regard sexuality and gender. I will spend most of my time with the popular literature aimed at young women, analyzing the underlying theology and theory at work. I will extrapolate, through the use of the (admittedly limited) data regarding sexual activity among young Evangelicals, including …

Social Media For Social Change: We Fight On, Heather Soldonia

Annual Interdisciplinary Conference on Human Trafficking: 3rd (2011)

Anti-trafficking crusader Sunitha Krishnan once said “my biggest challenge is your blocks to accept these victims as your own.” That challenge is the inspiration for this online community. The purpose of redGNAT is to “Reverse Exploitation Daily through a Global Network Against Trafficking”. The purpose is to create an online community of NGOs, counseling providers, pro bono law services and other resources. This part of the online community will be a type of directory (i.e. Petfinder.com) and serve as a collective that increases in value as it increases in participants and content. Ideally, members will organically link together within their …

The Butterfly Longitudinal Research Project: The Chab Dai Study On (Re-) Integration. Researching The Lifecycle Of Sexual Exploitation & Trafficking In Cambodia: End Of Year Progress Report 2010, Glenn Miles, Siobhan Miles Jan 2011

The Butterfly Longitudinal Research Project: The Chab Dai Study On (Re-) Integration. Researching The Lifecycle Of Sexual Exploitation & Trafficking In Cambodia: End Of Year Progress Report 2010, Glenn Miles, Siobhan Miles

Annual Interdisciplinary Conference on Human Trafficking: 3rd (2011)

The origin of this longitudinal study on (re-) integration comes out of the Chab Dai coalition. Over the past 10 plus years both within the Chab Dai coalition and in the greater Cambodian context there have been a number of aftercare facilities that have developed as a response to the issue of sexual exploitation and trafficking. Amongst the aftercare facilities there has been a growing desire to find out what becomes of these children in the long term after leaving the shelters. In addition, although some aftercare facilities have carefully followed up participants, others have had fewer resources to do …

No. 56: Right To The Classroom: Educational Barriers For Zimbabweans In South Africa, Jonathan Crush, Godfrey Tawodzera Jan 2011

No. 56: Right To The Classroom: Educational Barriers For Zimbabweans In South Africa, Jonathan Crush, Godfrey Tawodzera

Southern African Migration Programme

This report examines the obstacles to access by Zimbabwean children and students to schools and tertiary institutions in South Africa. There is a common assumption in South Africa that these children and students have no right to an education in South Africa. In fact, this view contravenes various international human rights conventions to which South Africa is a signatory. At the regional level, it is inconsistent with the SADC Education Protocol. At the national level, it violates the South African Constitution as well as legislation and stated government policies concerning the access of all children in the country to education. …

No. 55: The Engagement Of The Zimbabwean Medical Diaspora, Abel Chikanda Jan 2011

No. 55: The Engagement Of The Zimbabwean Medical Diaspora, Abel Chikanda

Southern African Migration Programme

Despite the well-documented negative impacts of the ‘brain drain’ of health professionals from Africa, there is an argument that their departure is not an absolute loss and that transnationally-oriented medical migrants (or diasporas) can act as development agents in their home countries. Financial remittances, in particular, are said to have significant transformative development potential. African countries are also expected to benefit from knowledge and skills transfer through the return of health professionals from abroad. Other diaspora engagement initiatives that do not require permanent return (such as short term work assignments, technological transfer to country of origin and ‘virtual’ participation of …

Communities As Allies, Joseph Schafer, Sean P. Varano, Nicholas Libby Jan 2011

Communities As Allies, Joseph Schafer, Sean P. Varano, Nicholas Libby

Justice Studies Faculty Publications

A popular axiom attributed to British policing is the police are the public and the public are the police. Inherent in this term is a blurring of the distinction between the police and the public they serve; the police are cast as being little different from the citizenry and citizens are cast into a role of responsibility for the safety and well-being of the community. In effect, communities are framed as allies in the fight to ensure safe and secure neighborhoods. Across space and time this idea has held uneven sway within American policing ideologies. This essay considers the relationship …

Money For Nothing: Molière’S Miser And The Risky World Of Early Modern France, Michael Call Jan 2011

Money For Nothing: Molière’S Miser And The Risky World Of Early Modern France, Michael Call

Quidditas

Molière’s 1668 comedy L’Avare, or The Miser, takes place during a significant shift in the way that early modern Europeans thought about chance and risk. Staged at the same historical moment that Pascal, Huygens, and Leibnitz were developing the first foundations of probability mathematics, L’Avare conjures up an atmosphere of uncertainty, setting in opposition risk-takers and the risk-averse. As the characters encounter and debate the concepts of usury, life expectancy, gambling, and the risks of maritime travel, they grapple palpably with the consequences of an uncertain world in which Divine Providence can no longer be assumed—a new world …

The Evolving Role Of Youth Workers, Gabriel L. Schlomer, Lynne M. Borden, Christine Bracamonte Wiggs

Educational & Counseling Psychology Faculty Scholarship

In reviewing the field of youth development, of which youth workers are a part, it is clear it has had a long and complex history that is intertwined with other disciplines. More recently youth workers have experienced a transformation of sorts, with youth programs in the past being seen exclusively as a place to play and have fun, whereas today’s expectations include a much broader focus on the overall positive development of young people. This evolution has been heavily influenced by a number of societal changes that have placed increasing demands on youth programs. Today’s youth workers are faced with …

The Nature And Origins Of Dually Diverse Neighborhoods, Jackie Michelle Cutsinger Jan 2011

The Nature And Origins Of Dually Diverse Neighborhoods, Jackie Michelle Cutsinger

Wayne State University Dissertations

This study investigates the extent to which neighborhoods that are both racially and economically diverse, hereafter referred to as dually diverse neighborhoods, exist within the metropolitan landscape of the United States and what factors contribute to the emergence of such neighborhoods. Using the Neighborhood Change Database, this study defines what a diverse neighborhood is and gives a descriptive portrait of the characteristics of these neighborhoods. The entropy index (H) is used as the measure of neighborhood diversity because of its ability to take into account the presence of more than two groups, unlike other more commonly used measures of segregation …

Collective Identification In Arab American Emerging Adults: Does Affirmation To Ethnic, National, Family And Religious Groups Predict Positive Adjustment?, Mona K. Poinsett Jan 2011

Collective Identification In Arab American Emerging Adults: Does Affirmation To Ethnic, National, Family And Religious Groups Predict Positive Adjustment?, Mona K. Poinsett

Wayne State University Dissertations

There has been little work investigating multiple social identities, though an individual can identify with several groups (Kiang, Yip, & Fuligni, 2008). The aim of this study is to investigate the relationships among theoretically significant ingroup identifications and their contributions to adjustment in Arab American emerging adults. The Inclusion of the Ingroup in Self (IIS) measure and the Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure - Revised (MEIM-R) were adapted to measure affirmation to ethnic, national (American), family, and religious groups. The results indicate that a pure model of pure affirmation could not be supported - it may be important to consider exploration …

Parent Adherence To Psychologist Recommendations: The Role Of Expressed Emotion About Child And Reaction To Diagnosis, Lesley Ann Hetterscheidt Jan 2011

Parent Adherence To Psychologist Recommendations: The Role Of Expressed Emotion About Child And Reaction To Diagnosis, Lesley Ann Hetterscheidt

Wayne State University Dissertations

For the majority of children with significant behavioral or academic problems at school, the first course of action is to participate in a psychological evaluation. Upon completion of the evaluation parents receive an integrative report containing numerous recommendations for how to improve the well-being of their child. 51 child clients who

were referred and completed a comprehensive assessment for behavioral or academic problems were recruited for this study. A year or more after the evaluations were completed, parents of the children were asked about each written report recommendation, whether or not it was followed, and reasons for non-adherence. Expressed Emotion …

Hospital Quality And Medicare Payment: A Theoretical And Empirical Investigation, Jinghua Huang Jan 2011

Hospital Quality And Medicare Payment: A Theoretical And Empirical Investigation, Jinghua Huang

Wayne State University Dissertations

Does Medicare's payment rate for a hospital stay influence the quality of care received by a patient? We examine this question, theoretically and empirically. First, a model is developed which generates the key hypothesis -- that Medicare's payment rate per admission should be positively related to care quality. We then test this hypothesis by estimating the relationship between Medicare's DRG payment for pneumonia, heart failure and heart attacks and care quality, using clinically-recognized measures of the quality of pneumonia care, heart failure care and heart attack care. Newly available data on acute hospitals in 2007 from "Hospital Compare" (maintained by …
